Marfo-Mariinsky Monastery in Belgorod
founded in 1993; in 2010, the St. John of Kronstadt Metropolitan Rehabilitation Center was founded at the monastery, helping drug and alcohol addicts. Patronal holidays: June 17, Memorial Day. Martha and Mary.
History[edit]
The Marfo-Mariinsky Convent in the city of Belgorod was founded on the model of the Marfo-Mariinsky Convent of Mercy of Grand Duchess Elizabeth Feodorovna in Moscow. Previously, there was never a monastery on this site, but two churches stood not far from each other: the Assumption-Nicholas Cathedral and the Church of the Intercession of the Mother of God, which are now part of the monastery. The Assumption-Nicholas Cathedral is an architectural monument of the early 18th century, and the Intercession Church is an architectural monument of the late 18th century. The opening of the Marfo-Mariinsky Convent in Belgorod was blessed by the Decree of the Holy Synod of the Russian Orthodox Church (extract from journal No. 125) dated December 28, 1999.
In 1993, active work began on the restoration of the Intercession Church. It was decided to open a nunnery at this temple. The monastery was created according to the charter of the Martha and Mary Convent of Mercy, which was founded in Moscow in 1909 by Grand Duchess Elisaveta Feodorovna, glorified by the Russian Orthodox Church as a saint at the end of the 20th century.
On February 9, 1994, the first Divine Liturgy was celebrated in a one-story building located in the courtyard of the monastery. For almost two years (before the restoration and consecration of the Church of the Intercession), divine services were held here on Sundays and holidays.
The opening of the Marfo-Mariinsky Convent in Belgorod was blessed by the Decree of the Holy Synod of the Russian Orthodox Church (extract from Journal No. 125) dated December 28, 1999. Currently, in the restored Church of the Intercession, the Divine Liturgy is celebrated daily, and in the evening there is an evening service.
At the Sunday evening service, an akathist to the Intercession of the Mother of God or a holiday is sung. Thanks to the diligence of the nuns, the Divine Service Rules are observed in the monastery.
The sisters preside, sing and read in the choir.
All monastic clothes and temple vestments are made by nuns. The sisters maintain cleanliness and order not only in the temple, but also in the hotel for pilgrims, prepare lunch for the builders working in the monastery, and provide charitable care for the poor and pilgrims. The nuns also make efforts to develop their own subsidiary farming.
In the villages of Vergilevka (Belgorod district) and Russkaya Berezovka (Rakityansky district) there are monastery farmsteads. According to its charter, the monastery is cenobitic. Currently, 30 nuns live in the monastery.
The monastery operates a shelter for orphan girls, a charity canteen, a patronage service and a church utensils store. The monastery has about 20 independently operating branches according to the charter of the monastery in Siberia, the Urals, and the Far East.
Kholkovsky Trinity Monastery[edit]
According to legend, the monastery is located on the spot where the meeting between Prince Igor Svyatoslavich and his brother Vsevolod took place before their campaign against the Polovtsians in 1185. The famous archaeologist Svetlana Pletnyova shares the same opinion.
Judging by the technique of cave construction, the monastery was presumably founded in the 14th century by the monks of the Kiev Pechersk Lavra. The Kholkov-Tsarev-Nikolaevsky Monastery was first mentioned in 1620. Its abbot at that time was the monk Gelasius. In 1650-1700, the underground Trinity Church was built. Its dome was made of brick.
In 1653, Tsar Alexei Mikhailovich gave the abbot of the monastery Ephraim a letter of grant for the free ownership of the mill, which the monks built next to the caves on the banks of the Kholok River.

Temples[edit]
Assumption-Nicholas Cathedral[edit]
The Assumption-Nicholas Cathedral is the oldest stone temple preserved on Belgorod land. Its construction, according to the testimony of Ivan Bashilov, who compiled the “Description of the Kursk Governorate” in 1785, dates back to 1692-1703. The construction of the cathedral was carried out by soldiers of the Belgorod garrison and Moscow archers led by Ivan Prokofiev.
In the altar of the cathedral (before its closure) there was a note that Peter I, on July 15, 1701, “... granted for his State Bogomoliya to the buildings of the stone church of the Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary and the Great Wonderworker St. Nicholas, which is being built in Belgorod in the soldier’s settlement Zhiloi, one hundred rubles of money " In 1759, the cathedral was severely damaged by fire: the wooden roof, domes, and iconostasis were burned, and the walls were scorched. At the beginning of the 19th century. the cathedral was surrounded by a high brick fence.
In 1889, on the site of the northwestern tower, a round chapel was built in memory of the deliverance of the Sovereign Emperor Alexander III and his august family from danger in a train crash on October 17, 1887. In the early 30s of the 20th century, the cathedral was closed. The building was converted into a bakery.
In 1986, the temple was taken under state protection as an architectural monument of the 17th century. In 1998, the cathedral was transferred to the Belgorod and Stary Oskol diocese; in 1999, for the holiday of Easter, the cathedral was given to the Marfo-Mariinsky Convent.
The Assumption-Nicholas Cathedral is an original example of a temple, rare for the Belgorod region, with an asymmetrical plan and baroque decor, characteristic of late Moscow architecture. The cathedral is three-altared: the main altar is in honor of the Dormition of the Blessed Virgin Mary, the southern chapel is in the name of St. Nicholas, Archbishop of Myra of Lycia, the Wonderworker, in the refectory, in its northern part there is an altar in the name of St. John the Baptist. Currently, restoration work is underway on the temple.
Intercession Church[edit]
Senior priest: Archpriest Vyacheslav Ivanovich Chistyakov.
The clergy of the temple: Archpriest Simeon Egorovich Khodeev, Priest Sergiy Mirovich Mikhalchuk, Deacon Alexy Viktorovich Amosov.
The single-altar Church of the Intercession of the Most Holy Theotokos was erected in 1791. In 1837, a chapel in the name of St. Mitrophan of Voronezh was added to it, and in 1865, a chapel in the name of St. Tikhon of Zadonsk.
At the end of the 20s of the 20th century, the temple was among those “to be closed.” It housed a transit prison.
During the restoration of the temple in the 90s, many human remains were found.
In the 50s, the temple building was used for mechanical workshops.
In 1991, restoration work began.
In 1993 the temple became a monastery - from the village. In Zimovenka, the center of the Marfo-Mariinsky Convent, founded in 1990, was moved to Belgorod.
The temple is an architectural monument.
Chapel in the name of the Royal Martyrs and New Martyrs[edit]
The chapel in the name of the Royal Martyrs and New Martyrs was consecrated on July 17, 1999 by Archbishop John of Belgorod and Stary Oskol.
Architect - V.Ya. Busygin.
Under the chapel a place was built for the burial of the remains of people who suffered for the faith during the atheistic times, and of soldiers who defended the Fatherland during the Second World War.
During restoration work on the territory of the Marfo-Mariinsky Monastery, where the chapel is located, the remains of dead people are still being found.
Every year, on the days of glorification of the royal martyrs, Divine services are held here.
Resurrection Monastery New Jerusalem (Sukharevo)[edit]
The construction of the temple complex of the monastery of the Resurrection of Christ is being carried out as an analogue of the holy city.
The oak cross of the crucifixion of Jesus Christ, the Stone of Anointing, the Edicule of the Holy Sepulcher reminds the Orthodox of Holy Jerusalem.
On the territory of the monastery there is also a chapel of the “Sovereign” icon of the Mother of God, the Church of St. John the Baptist with a bell tower.
The entrance to the temple passes through the holy Entrance Gate.
The construction of the temple began with the Votive Cross, placed on the local Mount Golgotha, nine years ago.
Jacob's Spring is being developed.

Social service[edit]
Working with drug addicts[edit]
In 2010, a Metropolitan Rehabilitation Center was founded at the monastery, with the blessing of Metropolitan John of Belgorod, Chairman of the Synodal Missionary Department of the Russian Orthodox Church. The rehabilitation center helps drug and alcohol addicts. The rehabilitation course usually lasts from 3 to 6 months. A resocialization program is being carried out, including living and working in the city under supervision, immediately after rehabilitation.
The Center organizes two areas of permanent outpatient (without living in a rehab center) courses:
- For codependents – relatives of addicts;
- For those addicted to alcohol and tobacco.
Two “Sobriety” Consents were organized from the addicts who completed the courses and their relatives. Twice a week, discussions and film lectures are held for them and everyone interested. Members of the Concords twice a week take part in the service of prayers with an akathist before the icon of the Mother of God “The Inexhaustible Chalice”. There is a 24-hour helpline for those in trouble with alcohol and drugs. A hospital church has been opened in the Regional Drug Dispensary, where the Divine Liturgy is served once a week and weekly meetings and conversations are held with addicts undergoing treatment. We conduct lectures showing video materials in educational institutions of the Belgorod region. The subject “Orthodox sobriety” is being taught at the Belgorod Orthodox Theological Seminary, etc.
On June 25, 2013, a new, specially built rehabilitation center was dedicated in the village of Malye Mayachki, 50 kilometers from Belgorod. The center’s mission is to rehabilitate drug and alcohol dependent citizens who want to get rid of their addictions, and to do this in a comfortable environment that allows them to provide much more highly effective assistance.
Head - Suvorov Ivan Gennadievich.
Borisov Tikhvin women's hermitage[edit]
According to legend, the beginning of the Borisov Tikhvin Hermitage was a wooden chapel built in 1710 by Boris Petrovich Sheremetev according to a vow he made on the eve of the Battle of Poltava in front of the ancestral icon of the Tikhvin Mother of God, which always accompanied the field marshal on military campaigns.
And here is another version... The general battle of Poltava was scheduled for June 26, 1709. On this day, Orthodox Christians celebrated the appearance of the miraculous Tikhvin Icon of the Mother of God. And Field Marshal Count Boris Sheremetev begged Emperor Peter I to postpone the battle for one day in order to pray to the Mother of God for intercession. The field marshal vowed that if he defeated the Swedes, he would build a monastery in her honor.

Belgorod Transfiguration Cathedral
Thus, the largest temple in Belgorod is the Transfiguration Cathedral. It was erected according to the design of architect E. L. Vasilyev on the site of a dilapidated wooden church in 1813, at the expense of parishioners.
The Transfiguration Cathedral is a two-story stone building with a bell tower in the spirit of provincial Russian classicism. The magnificent interior decoration of the cathedral is made in the spirit of “New Russian splendor”.
At the end of the 1920s, when the Trinity Cathedral was closed, the Church of the Transfiguration received the status of a cathedral, but in 1962 it was also closed.
Only in July 1991 was the cathedral completely returned to the believers, and in September of the same year the relics of St. Joasaph were solemnly transferred here.
A little history
The Marfo-Mariinskaya Convent was opened in 1626. Its main architectural treasures are the Intercession Church built in 1766 and the Assumption-Nicholas Cathedral. The fate of the first temple is standard: after the revolution it was closed and converted into a prison for transit people. Later, in the second half of the 20th century, workshops were located in the dilapidated cathedral. The Assumption-Nicholas Cathedral, built in 1703, also had a difficult fate. After 1917 it was closed, and in the 50-80s. - transferred to the Belgorod bakery.
