St. Nicholas Cathedral

- an Orthodox church in the Avtozavodsky district of Nizhny Novgorod. The parish includes: a functioning church in honor of the holy martyr Tatiana, a stone five-altar cathedral with a main altar in honor of St. Nicholas the Wonderworker, and an Orthodox educational center in honor of St. Nicholas.

History[edit]

The stone five-altar cathedral with the main altar in honor of St. Nicholas the Wonderworker in its architecture has some similarities with the Transfiguration Cathedral of the Diveyevo Monastery, but at the same time it contains its own features: annexes, a chapel, a bell tower. In the lower level of the temple there will be a baptismal area, many utility rooms, a refectory for one hundred people, a conference room, a Sunday school, a library, and the bishop's and priest's sacristies.

The upper temple room is designed for three thousand people and has a very large altar with three altars. Since the height between the upper and lower buildings is decent, a lift for the disabled is provided. An elevator will also serve to service the altars.

The parish was organized in 1996. The following year, the building of a kindergarten was transferred to the community, in which services and services began to be performed. Currently, this room houses a house church in honor of St. Seraphim of Sarov. For Easter 1998, a wooden church was built in honor of the holy martyr Tatiana. In the same year, the unfinished building of the Sever cinema was transferred to the community, which was converted into the Avtozavodsky Orthodox Center.

On August 21, 1999, a solemn consecration of the foundation site of the future church in honor of St. Nicholas the Wonderworker took place with the erection of a cross, which was performed by Metropolitan Nikolai (Kutepov) of Nizhny Novgorod and Arzamas. After this, work on the construction of the cathedral was suspended due to problems with financing. Since June 2006, work has resumed. Brick laying began directly in August 2006. At the base of the cathedral lie bricks purchased with funds from teachers of automobile factory kindergartens, GAZ workers, and ordinary residents of the area. The Church of St. Nicholas the Wonderworker is unique in its size and planned design; it is not just a temple, but a huge cathedral 68 meters high. During the construction of the cathedral, the experience of building the Cathedral of Christ the Savior in Moscow and the righteous Theodore Ushakov in Saransk is used.

The Cathedral in honor of St. Nicholas is a temple complex, which also includes a well-appointed cultural and educational center where people can become familiar with Orthodox culture.

Founding history

Nizhny Novgorod was founded in 1221 for protection from the Mordovians. In the 14th century, the city became the center of an independent principality, which actually competed with Moscow for primacy. Before the revolution, there were several dozen churches in Nizhny, among them the church in Karpovka. The first temple in Karpovka was built in 1722.

Then it was a wooden church, but it burned down in 1801 and in its place the stone Church of the Transfiguration of the Savior was built in Karpovka. Parishioners were allowed to build only a stone church, precisely because of frequent fires. The further fate of the temple was as follows:

the church was designed by the architect Ivan Ivanovich Mezhetsky, a special brick was made - fire-resistant; in 1817 the church was consecrated; another fire in 1869 severely damaged the church, but it was preserved and was restored again by the parishioners; there were more and more residents in the settlement and according to the design of the architect R. Ya The Kileveyna temple was significantly expanded, a second floor-refectory was built on, two chapels were moved there; The Transfiguration Church of Nizhny Novgorod was painted according to drawings by V. Vasnetsov and M. Nesterov at the beginning of the 20th century.

There was a parochial school at the temple. During Soviet times, the church was active. It closed only for a short time in 1941, but was reopened in 1943. During the Great Patriotic War, Nizhny Novgorod was a rear city, but in 1943 it was bombed.

The Transfiguration Church in Nizhny Novgorod was severely destroyed. But thanks to the efforts of the parishioners, who quickly collected funds and prepared the necessary building materials, it was restored within a year. Services there continued. The Karpov Church was visited not only by residents of the city, but also by surrounding villages.

St. Nicholas Cathedral is the most ancient temple on the territory of Yaroslav’s Court and on the Trade Side in general. Built in 1113-1136 and consecrated in honor of St. Nicholas the Wonderworker, especially revered in Russia, the cathedral was included in the UNESCO World Heritage List in 1992.

St. Nicholas Cathedral is located on the territory of the former princely court. According to the Novgorod First Chronicle, the temple was founded in 1113 by Prince Mstislav Vladimirovich. This is the first stone structure on the trade side, dedicated to St. Nicholas the Wonderworker .

During the occupation of Novgorod by the Nazi invaders, the temple was turned into a barracks, and in 1945 it was transferred to the use of the Orthodox Church. In September 1962, St. Nicholas Cathedral was abolished as a functioning temple and transferred for use to the Novgorod Museum.

Almost the same age as Veliky Novgorod, which stood in its heart, on Yaroslav's Courtyard, for nine centuries, by the end of the 20th century, St. Nicholas Cathedral needed urgent and expensive restoration, which was impossible in the conditions of the economic crisis in Russia.

Then the Hanseatic partner cities lent their shoulder, as has happened more than once in the history of Russian-Hanseatic relations. In the cathedral in the 1990s. restoration work was carried out, financed by the cities of the “Modern Hanseatic League” .

Residents of one hundred Hanseatic cities took part in saving the St. Nicholas Cathedral, the names of which Novgorod gratefully preserves: they can be read at the main entrance to the temple. Numerous fragments of original painting from the 12th century have been preserved in the interior. Fragments of frescoes from the 12th century are exhibited in the cathedral.

, among which are “Job on the Rot”, “The Last Judgment”, fresco ornaments, etc. Most of the paintings date back to the 19th century .

In 1999, when Novgorod celebrated its 1140th anniversary, the cathedral appeared in all its splendor. During the restoration, the masterpiece of 12th-century architecture was saved from complete destruction. In addition, the patina of time was removed from it - the amazing temple was restored to its original forms.

In May 2013, exhibitions dedicated to the 900th anniversary of the temple opened in the cathedral:

• exhibition “Graffiti drawings in Novgorod monuments of the 11th – 14th centuries.” introduces visitors to a small but most striking part of the rich visual material preserved on the walls of Novgorod churches; • exhibition “St. Nicholas Cathedral.

Research, restoration,” which includes materials from research and restoration of the St. Nicholas Cathedral, construction and decorative materials, as well as photographs, documents and personal belongings of architects and archaeologists who studied the monument;

Multimedia panorama!

The multimedia panorama “Great Trade and the Prince's Court” is a new hardware and software exhibition complex, for which a panoramic screen with a 360˚ view and a diameter of 6 m was specially built. Panoramic images are created using 6 wide-angle projectors controlled by 3 powerful computers. The directional sound system allows you to create various sound effects.

Visitors have a unique opportunity to plunge into the atmosphere of medieval Novgorod , hear the voices of the ancient Torg , find out where the veche and the merchant court , and also better understand the history of one of the oldest cities in Russia .

The creative team that worked on the panorama included researchers from several departments: the storage and study of architectural monuments and monumental painting, the department of storage and study of written sources, and specialists from the museum development department. Author of audio-visual and multimedia solutions,

Moscow. At the press screening the first of three stories in the series about the monuments of Yaroslav's Court . We can safely call this project a pilot, because... This is the first attempt of the Novgorod Museum-Reserve to introduce modern information technologies in exhibition work.

The story about St. Nicholas Cathedral, its architecture and painting, will be a continuation of the cycle. The iconostasis of the cathedral will be recreated using multimedia.

Viewers will be able to see more than 70 icons from the funds of the Novgorod Museum-Reserve, which were part of the 5-tier Nikolsky iconostasis and were there until the 80s of the last century.

The work on creating multimedia content for the panorama is planned to be completed by the end of 2014 with a story about the architectural features of the monuments of Yaroslav's courtyard and market, which, according to the famous Novgorod architect G.M. Shtendera , are “pages of the stone chronicle of Novgorod history.”

The introduction of modern digital technologies and the search for new ways of communicating with visitors are a trend in the development of modern museums. The project with the creation of panoramic images introduces museum guests in a new way to the history of Veliky Novgorod , the custodian of which is the Novgorod Museum-Reserve.
