Brief biography of the Equal-to-the-Apostles saint
The biography of Saint Nina is known from Salome of Ujarma, who wrote it down from the words of Equal-to-the-Apostles shortly before her death.
Origin and childhood
Nina was born in 280 in Cappadocia, the central region of modern Turkey. She was the only daughter of pious Christians Zebulun and Sosana. It is known about the saint’s parents that her father, a noble and wealthy Roman, served as a military commander for Emperor Maximilian and enjoyed his trust. The mother was the sister of the Jerusalem Patriarch Juvenal.
When the girl was 12 years old, the family moved to Jerusalem. Father and mother decided to devote the rest of their lives to serving the Lord: the father took monastic vows and became a hermit in the desert, the mother accepted the rank of deaconess at the temple from her brother Juvenal. Nina's further education was entrusted to Elder Nianfora. Nianfora instilled in the girl pious behavior and told many stories from the Gospel about the life and suffering of Jesus Christ. By the age of 14, Nina knew and read the Holy Scriptures well.
She was especially struck by the story of Christ's robe. The clothes taken from the Savior before the crucifixion were divided among the Roman legionnaires by lot. She was tormented by the question of the whereabouts of the robe woven for Jesus by the Mother of God. Nianfora explained to her that, according to legend, the tunic was bought by Rabbi Eleazar and taken to Iveria (the ancient name of Georgia) - a country where the Christian faith did not spread.
The young girl began to pray to the Mother of God to bless her to visit Iberia to venerate the sacred relic. The Blessed Virgin heard her prayers and appeared to Nina in a dream. In the hands of the Mother of God was a cross made of grapevine, which she handed over to the righteous woman with parting words: to go to Iberia with the word of God, where the cross will be her protection from open and secret enemies. The Most Pure Mother of God promised Nina that she would be her patroness in righteous deeds.
Waking up from sleep, the girl saw that she was holding a cross in her hands. With tears of joy, she tied him with her hair and hurried to Uncle Juvenal. Nina informed him of a prophetic vision and desire to preach the Gospel in Iberia. The Patriarch of Jerusalem blessed her before the altar for her apostolic service.
Pilgrimage feat
On the way to Iveria, Princess Hripsimia joined Saint Nina with her retinue of 50 girls and her nurse Gaiania. Having accepted the saint’s sermons, they converted to Christianity. Refusing marriage with the pagan Roman emperor, Hripsimia followed the saint to Armenia. King Tiridates decided to persuade her to marry him, but, having received a refusal, ordered the princess and all the women accompanying her to be tortured and executed.
Only Nina was saved, whom the Lord saved by telling her to take refuge in the rosehip bushes. Having passed through mountain passes, the saint entered Iveria and stopped to rest on the shores of Lake Paravan. At night she dreamed of a saint who handed her a paper for the Iverinsky king Mirian. It contained 10 sayings that explained the purpose of Nina’s arrival in the mountainous country.
Strengthened by the vision and appeal to the Mother of God, the preacher entered the city of Urbnisi and lived among the pagans for a month, observing their customs. Together with them, she went to the capital of Iveria, Mtskheta, where the ceremony of worshiping the golden idol Armaz was to take place.
The spectacle of idolatry saddened the saint to tears. She prayed to the Lord to show his power and help convince the pagans to accept Christianity. The Lord heard her prayer. During the ceremony, a strong wind rose, clouds thickened, lightning flashed, and thunder roared. The idol fell to the ground and broke into pieces. People, seeing such a spectacle, fled in fear.
Nina settled in Mtskheti with the royal gardener, where she lived for about a year, preaching the word of God among the townspeople. Anastasia, the gardener's wife, was barren. Nina prayed to the Mother of God that the good family would have a child. A miracle happened, Anastasia gave birth to a child. She and her husband believed in the Savior.
The Equal-to-the-Apostles confirmed her sermons with miracles. More and more people accepted Christianity. The royal couple did not believe and opposed the belief in one God. In the absence of King Mirian, Queen Nana became seriously ill. Her maids turned to the saint so that she would come to the royal palace and heal the queen.
The preacher refused to go to the palace, but called Nana to appear to her and promised healing. The queen came to the saint and after her prayer she felt that she was no longer sick. She believed in Christ and told her husband about it. Mirian angrily promised to return to Mtskheti and execute all Christians, including his wife and Nina. At that very moment he became blind.
After futile appeals to the pagan gods, the king prayed to the Lord and vowed to accept faith, build a temple for prayer and fulfill the commandments of God. After these words, Mirian’s vision returned, who, falling to his knees, thanked the Savior. Returning to the palace, the king called Equal-to-the-Apostles and said that he, too, accepted the faith of Christ.
The preacher advised him to baptize the entire people, turning to the Byzantine ruler Constantine for help. Mirian sent envoys to Byzantium with a request to send a bishop and priests. In 324, the Georgian people acquired the Orthodox faith.
The mountaineers remained in the pagan faith. Equal to the Apostles, together with the deacon and presbyter, rose to the sources of the rivers Aragvi and Iori, where in the mountain villages she preached the commandments of the Lord and baptized into Orthodoxy.
The saint was revealed in a dream where the robe of Jesus Christ is located. She pointed out to the king the cypress tree, from under the roots of which a sacred relic had been removed. At this place, the Georgian ruler ordered the construction of the first Christian temple in honor of the 12 apostles: the Mtskheta Patriarchal Cathedral of Svetitskhoveli. The columns in the church were made of cypress, in honor of which it was named Svetitskhoveli - “life-giving pillar”.
Life after the baptism of the Georgian people
From Iveria the saint went to Kakheti (the eastern part of modern Georgia). She chose a modest hut for herself in the mountain village of Bodbe, where she spent the rest of her life in prayer and apostolic service. The queen of Kakheti was baptized into Orthodoxy, and, following her example, so were those close to the court and subjects.
Saint Nina fulfilled her duty to the Lord by converting the Georgian people to the Christian faith. In 335, she learned from an angel that her hour of death was approaching. Equal to the Apostles addressed a letter to Tsar Mirian, asking him to send a bishop for confession and last communion. The ruler, together with the clergy, went to Bodbe to say goodbye to the saint.
Nina - name meaning
If in Russia the most popular name throughout the twentieth century was the name Tatyana, then in Georgia not only was, but remains the first, favorite and most common name Nina. Every month the number of Georgian women is replenished with 250 newborn Ninas. Of course, such popularity is associated with Saint Nina, Equal to the Apostles, who brought Christianity to Iberian soil. It is Saint Nina who is revered as the enlightener and patroness of Georgia. From there the name migrated to Russia. According to statistical estimates, in Russia the name Nina is in sixteenth place - slightly inferior in popularity to the name Yulia, but ahead of Maria. So what does the name Nina mean?
There is no clear answer to this question. The etymology of the word is complex, and the roots of this word are found in several languages. Thus, in Sumerian-Akkadian mythology, there were a dozen goddesses, whose names were compound and began with the root “nin”: Ninlil (mistress, mistress of storms), Ninhursag (lady mother) Ninmah (great mistress) Nintu (birthing mistress) ... In Hebrew we find both options: “nin” נין (great-grandson), and “nina” נינה (great-granddaughter). Name endings in some Romance languages are also learned as "nina".

Having seen the brides of Christ, who, together with Saint Nina and Hripsimia, were saved by fasting and prayer, the wicked thoughts of the lawless Diocletian, who wanted to take Hripsimia as his wife and teach him idolatry, all of them fled secretly from the idolatrous city of Rome to the country of Armenia; There they were also put to death by the command of the pagan king Tivridates. The Lord saved Saint Nina from the snares of Diocletian and Tivridates and brought the gospel to Iberia for the sake of the word of the Gospel. In the same way, we, rejoicing in this providence of God for the salvation of people, praise God’s messenger, Saint Nina, calling: Rejoice, having made clear to yourself the path of the gospel by your stay in Rome; Rejoice, glorified by your invincibility of spirit and wondrous courage in the service of the word of God. Light-receiving lamp, Saint Nino, who showed light in the darkness, when she moved from earth to heaven, she gathered her faithful children from the font, like branches of a new plant, and from them healed some sick people, and gave up their immaculate spirit to God. Seeing her blessed death, King Mirian and his neighbors wept bitterly and, singing songs of departure with tears, cried out to her like this: Rejoice, heavenly Angel appearing in the form of an earthly man; Rejoice, bride of Christ, who brought the Iberian Church to the Heavenly Bridegroom. Rejoice, our good enlightener, who completed her course in day and night struggles; Rejoice, tireless nurse, who fed us with the food of Divine words. Rejoice, immaculate dove, flying from the earth to the heavenly abodes; Rejoice, for your body has been clothed with incorruption. Rejoice, for your holy relics are filled with fragrance; Rejoice, for we, your children, now enjoy that fragrance. Rejoice, holy Equal-to-the-Apostles Nino, enlightener of Georgia.

First prayer
O all-praised and devoted Equal-to-the-Apostles Nino, we come running to you and tenderly ask you: protect us (names) from all evils and sorrows, bring to reason the enemies of the holy Church of Christ and disgrace the opponents of piety and implore the All-Good God our Savior, to whom you now stand, to grant to the people to the Orthodox, peace, long life and haste in every good undertaking, and may the Lord lead us into His Heavenly Kingdom, where all the saints glorify His all-holy name, now and ever and unto the ages of ages. Amen.
Second prayer
O all-praiseful and admirable Equal-to-the-Apostles Nino, truly a great adornment to the Orthodox Church and a great praise to the people of God, who enlightened the entire Georgian country with Divine teaching, and who defeated the enemy of our salvation with her feats of apostleship, who through labor and prayer planted the garden of Christ here and grew it into many fruits! The words of the servant of God, who imitated the first-called Andrew and the other apostles in her apostolic sermons, the enlightener of Iberia, and the Holy Spirit, holy Equal-to-the-Apostles Nino, pray to Christ God to save our souls.
In search of Christ's robe
With the name of Jesus Christ on her lips, Nina set off on the road. Her path was not easy - she happened to witness martyrdom for the faith and was miraculously lucky not to suffer herself. At some point on her journey, Nina met the bride of Christ Hripsimia, her mentor in the faith Gaiania and other nuns - and shared with them the flight from Emperor Diocletian. He, without feeling personal hostility towards Christians, expelled them as undermining the authority of his government. The fans of the wandering Jewish preacher Diocletian were not impressed - he preferred to be greeted like a deity. The legend that he was inflamed with passion for the maiden Hripsimia is hardly true. The emperor was married, and to a Christian woman - however, he forced her to make sacrifices to the Roman gods. Gaiania, Ripsimia and other women suffered because they did not want to do this - Diocletian sentenced Christians who did not recognize the power of Jupiter over themselves to death.
Christian women fled to Armenia, the patrimony of King Tiridates (or, in the Greek tradition, Tiridates). Diocletian managed to write to him about them - and casually told him about the beauty of Ripsimia. So the poor maiden had to experience the passion of the king of the earth. But she wished to remain faithful to Heaven. The enraged Tiridates executed Hripsime, Eldress Gaiania and their companions (the Armenian Orthodox Church still honors Saints Hripsime and Gayane). Nina miraculously managed to escape persecution and on June 1 set foot on Georgian soil - she entered the lot of the Mother of God.
History of the relics
Mirian gave the order, contrary to Nina’s wishes, to transfer her body to the Mtskheta church. However, no one could even move the coffin from its place. Then everyone understood God’s will in this and buried the preacher near the hut where she lived. Later, the king ordered a temple to be built over the grave in the name of St. George.
The church building was destroyed many times and then restored, but continues to stand to this day. Now it belongs to the Bodbe Metropolitanate.
Finding
The body of the enlightener was found incorrupt. Many miracles of healing occurred from him. This prompted the Georgian Church to immediately glorify Nina as a saint. Soon temples in her honor began to be built in Iveria. Ancient stone church of St. Nina, built by King V. Gurg-Aslan on the site where the idols were defeated, has survived to this day.
The Equal-to-the-Apostles Cross was in the Mtskheta Cathedral for a long time. Then, during the time of persecution of Christians, a certain monk took it to Armenia, where it was kept in the Cathedral of St. Lazarus. When persecution began in this country, the cross was hidden in the fortress. Only in the 13th century was it returned to the Mtskheta Cathedral. Then it was again hidden in fortresses, and in the 18th century the Georgian metropolitan brought it secretly to Russia and presented it to the Georgian prince Bakar. For some time, the shrine was located in the Nizhny Novgorod region (the village of Lyskovo) on the estate of the Georgian princes.
At the beginning of the 19th century, Emperor Alexander, who was presented with the cross, ordered its return to Georgia. The shrine is still kept in the Tiflis Cathedral. The cross was bound in silver and placed near the Royal Doors.
As for Christ’s robe, no one was able to obtain it until a certain time. After the Angel whispered mysterious words to Nina, and myrrh began to flow from the stump, no one could get closer to the place where, according to legend, the girl with the tunic was buried. There were attempts to excavate the grave, but those who intended to do so died.
During the invasion of Tamerlane, one God-fearing man, fearing the looting of the temple and the desecration of the great shrine, prayed and was able to dig up the grave and get the tunic. He gave the shrine to the bishop, but the temple in Mtskheta was completely destroyed. After the restoration of the structure, the chiton was returned.
After the conquest of Georgia, the Persian Shah Abbas decided to present it to the Russian Patriarch Filaret, the father of Tsar Mikhail Romanov, in order to win the trust of Russia. The Sovereign and Patriarch, making sure that this was indeed part of the robe that belonged to Christ, after a number of miracles associated with it, with prayer and fasting, placed the shrine in the Moscow Assumption Cathedral, where it is still kept, decorated with jewelry, in a special room at the western wall. In honor of this, the Feast of the Placing of the Lord's Robe was established in July.
Current location
At first, the temple of St. George, her relative, was erected over Nina’s grave, and then a monastery was built. It became the cultural center of the diocese. The Bodbe Monastery in Georgia has always been popular among the population. The kings chose it as a place for coronation. At first it was a men's monastery, but later it was made a women's monastery. The Soviet government closed the monastery, but in 1991 the Bodbe Monastery in Georgia was revived again.
The original temple, built on the relics of the enlightener, was destroyed, then a new cathedral was built in its place, where today the relics of the Georgian enlightener rest.
Miracle on the royal hunt
But King Mirian remained deaf to the new teaching. He can be understood - Nina was the first Christian woman he saw, why would he even trust her words and betray his shining, victorious Armazi for the sake of the unknown Christ and exchange the sword for the cross? As often happens, the conversion to Christianity was helped by an emergency situation. While hunting on Mount Thoti, the king was “overtaken by darkness.” According to two different versions, it was either darkness that suddenly came during the white day, or blindness that struck the king.
Armazi was in no hurry to help the frightened ruler, and the king, probably remembering his wife’s stories, called on “God Nino,” swearing to believe in Him if He helped. A pragmatic king, “you give me, I’ll give you,” but it helped!
Next, Mirian confessed what had happened to Nina, and then wrote about his desire to receive holy baptism to Constantine the Great himself and his mother St. Elena. The Roman ruler, a convinced Christian, sent Bishop John, priest James and a deacon to Mirian's court to conduct the baptism ceremony of the king and his court “in full form.” Later, at the confluence of the Mktvari and Aragvi rivers, the people were baptized en masse. Since 326, Christianity has become the state religion of Georgia, and the feast of its Epiphany is celebrated by the GOC on October 1.
Canon and Akathist
Read on the day of celebrating the memory of the saint. The Irmos of the canon are sung in the first tone. After the third canto, as always, comes the sedalene, after the sixth - kontakion and irmos. After the ninth the luminary is read.
The akathist to the saint was written by Archpriest Evstafiy Eliev. The text was approved by the Synod in November 1894. The Akathist is read independently, privately, standing in front of the image, in cases where there is a desire to establish oneself in the Orthodox faith or it is necessary to pray for the salvation of people who have fallen into a sect. It is better to spend the morning hours for this.
