The Savvino-Storozhevsky Monastery in Zvenigorod is considered one of the masterpieces of Old Russian architecture. The remarkable cathedral complex presented here dates back to the fifteenth century and was originally already with decorated towers and framed by high walls. History of the monastery

By decree of the heir of Prince Dmitry Donskoy, Yuri Dmitrievich, a sacred community was founded in the mid-14th century. The monastery became the place where the Reverend sought solitude for himself, and in pursuit of this goal, he even dug a small cave, spending many hours in it in prayer services.

The monastery of Savvino-Storozhevsky was initially small both in terms of the number of flocks and its area, but when the number of monks began to increase over time, then the monastery itself expanded significantly territorially.

What the monastery looks like today

When visiting the monastery, pilgrims first go to the Church of the Nativity of the Blessed Virgin Mary. This is the same building that was built in the 15th century and has survived to this day. The iconostasis in the temple is unique, it was made by order of the great sovereign Alexei Mikhailovich. The paintings on the walls of the temple were done by students of Andrei Rublev.

Traditionally, the tallest building in the monastery is its belfry. Previously, the belfry had 16 bells of different sizes, the largest of which weighed about 30 tons. The ringing of bells in the Zvenigorod Monastery could be heard even in Moscow. In 1941, the largest bell fell, damaging the belfry. After the war it was restored and restored.

Interesting to know! The bells of the belfry became a symbol of Zvenigorod. When visiting the city, tourists buy small bells in memory of it.

Also on the territory of the monastery there are preserved royal chambers, which were built specifically for Alexei Mikhailovich. Later, representatives of the royal family stayed there. Nowadays there is a library and a monastery shop in this building.

Interior decoration of the Church of the Nativity of the Blessed Virgin Mary

The fortress wall of the monastery, the construction of which lasted more than four years, also deserves special attention. You can go to the wall from the Provision Tower, buying fresh pastries and monastery sweets along the way.

The territory of the monastery is quite large, green and equipped. There are benches for relaxation, refectories, and icon shops. The nature in the vicinity of the monastery is simply amazing. It was the Zvenigorod monastery that inspired the famous artist A. Levitan to paint the painting “Evening Bells”.

Monk Sava's Skete

To pray in solitude, the Monk Savva often moved away from the monastery into a ravine. Later, at this place, he dug a cave in which he had the opportunity to talk with the Lord one-on-one. After his death, a church with cells and outbuildings, the so-called Skete, was erected on the site of the cave.

People who were looking for peace of mind often came to the Skete. Sava's monastery was visited by princes and emperors, in particular Tsar Alexander II and Grand Duke Sergei Alexandrovich.

During Soviet times, the monastery suffered greatly. Most of the buildings were destroyed, and those that survived were allocated for housing to the families of military personnel. Only for the 600th anniversary of the monastery was the restoration of the Skete carried out, the work of the source resumed, and a bathhouse built.
