Brief biography of the saint

The birthplace of Saint Marina is Pisidia, a region of Asia Minor, which was part of the Roman Empire. The Great Martyr was presumably born in 292 and died in 307. During this period, Emperor Diocletian ruled, marking the beginning of the Great Persecution of Christians. Christian and Catholic lives describe the childhood and torment of Saint Marina in different ways.

Origin and childhood of the great martyr

In the city of Antioch lived a pagan priest named Edessius. His wife gave birth to a girl, Marina, according to the Catholic version, Margarita, and died. The father gave the child to be raised by a wet nurse. The girl grew up smart, kind and beautiful. The daughter lived in a village, fifteen miles from Antioch. Traveling Christian preachers walked along the roads. One day, 12-year-old Marina heard the story of how the Son of God Jesus was incarnated from the immaculate Virgin and the Holy Spirit, how he performed miracles in Jerusalem and suffered torment on the Cross for the salvation of mankind. Those who believe in Christ are destined for eternal life in the Kingdom of Heaven.

The sermon ended, but Jesus remained - in Marina’s heart. The girl stopped worshiping idols. In Western literary sources, Margarita was baptized as a child. Edessius learned about his daughter’s renunciation of idolatry and renounced her. But the young Christian woman revered and relied on the Will of God. Marina dreamed of expressing her love for Christ in martyrdom, as He suffered for people.

Until the age of 15, the Antiochian saint lived with a wet nurse and tended sheep. One day, Bishop Olimvriy was driving through a field with his servants and saw a beautiful girl. He began asking her who she was and where she was from. Marina answered honestly that she was the daughter of a priest, but professed Christianity.

Olymbrius, by order of the emperor, was supposed to kill Christians. But the eparch, captivated by Marina’s beauty, invited her to marry him if only she would renounce Christ. The girl replied that she was the bride of Jesus and was faithful to the Eternal Bridegroom. For such speeches, Olimvriy ordered the servants to seize the girl and took her to the palace.

Torment and tests of faith

Upon arrival at the palace, the eparch gathered the people and publicly once again tried to persuade Marina to idolatry, and most importantly, to marriage. The mayor spent a long time and patiently persuading the shepherdess, as his passion for the obstinate girl flared up more and more. Olimvriy promised to shower the girl with wealth after marriage, promising her fame and honor. But the Christian woman answered that she would not exchange the Kingdom of God and pure love for Christ for life in the filth of vices and sacrifices to insensitive idols.

After such an insult, the eparch lost patience and in anger ordered the girl to be undressed and beaten with iron rods. Marina fell to the ground from the blows. Her body was bleeding. People from the crowd were horrified by the torture and begged the girl to have mercy on her body and youth. But the martyr in response asked them to shut up. Their advice did not help her, but tempted her.

Finally, the eparch stopped the torture and ordered the martyr to be taken to prison. There was barely a glimmer of life in her body, but during the torture and in the cold dungeon, Marina fervently prayed.

In the darkness of the cell, Satan appeared to her in the guise of a dragon and began to tempt and frighten the girl. The evil one opened his fiery mouth and almost swallowed the martyr, but she created a cross. The demon disappeared, and God’s Light poured down on Marina from above, and her wounds healed. The girl saw a shining cross and a white dove hovering above it. A voice from above predicted her salvation and immortality in the Kingdom of God.

The next day, Marina again appeared before the eparch. Her body healed overnight, which Olimvrius was very surprised by. He attributed the miracle to the mercy of the pagan gods and called on the girl to sacrifice to them. Marina boldly replied that it was the Lord Jesus who did not abandon his bride. And the eparch awaits retribution for the suffering caused and the murders committed. The ruler ordered the girl to be tortured.

Marina was tied to a tree, stabbed with a jagged pitchfork and burned. Once again the crowd was worried and suffering. Olimvrius himself turned away and covered his face with his hands and cloak, so terrible were the girl’s wounds and torment. But Marina turned to Christ with her soul and consciousness. In detached prayer she was indifferent to bodily pain.

Martyrdom

The eparch stopped the senseless torture. He decided: if a Christian woman doesn’t care about fire, let her pass the test of water. The servants brought a huge jug and began to drown the girl. Suddenly, the Divine Light poured from the sky again, the cross shone, and a dove appeared. The sign was seen by secret Christians standing in the crowd. Marina came out of the font healed, without a single mark on her body. In Orthodox life, this moment is considered the baptism of the martyr. Seeing the miracle, the secret Christians came out and confessed their loyalty to Christ, and many people believed in Him. The bishop ordered everyone to be killed.

Converts and open Christians were cut to pieces with swords, turning the place of torture into a bloodbath. Olimvriy sentenced Marina to death by decapitation.

The executioner Malchus, also a Christian, was to carry out the sentence. He understood that this was his role according to the Will of God. But his hand trembled when he raised his sword over the girl’s head. Marina said that he must fulfill the sentence, otherwise he will not enter the Kingdom of God with her. The executioner obeyed, and the soul of the great martyr ascended to the Kingdom of Heaven.

Veneration and relics of the saint

The Great Martyr Marina began to be venerated as a saint thanks to the miraculous power of her relics. After the execution, the remains were taken by the witness of her imprisonment and torture, Theotimus. He was the first to describe the life of the saint - based on his own observations and purchased court records. The body of the great martyr was kept in the house of the pious senator of Antioch, in a specially built tomb.

Particles of the relics were delivered to Constantinople, Italy. Relics are kept in different countries:

  • in Venice - in the 17th century, a casket with her hand was kept in the Church of St. Marina. In the 19th century it was moved to the Church of St. Thomas;

Particles of the saint’s relics are kept in Athonite monasteries. There is an assumption that in Western belief Marina began to be called Margarita allegorically. The name translates as “pearl”. This is how the saint was nicknamed for her beauty and nobility. The Great Martyr is revered by Orthodox residents of regions close to her homeland: in Egypt, southern Turkey, and Bulgaria. Many churches in Greece were consecrated in honor of the great martyr.

The Venerable Marina of Beria is known in Orthodoxy. The ascetic lived with her sister in a secluded cave. Women wore iron chains and ate once every 40 days. According to Eastern tradition, girls with the name Margarita were called Marina at baptism. March 13, the day of the Beria ascetic, is Marina’s name day. Now we have received unspeakable glory and unfathomable light, where unspeakable joy is, where unceasing joy is in the Church of the firstborn, where the righteous villages are, for all Christ. And pray, Philip, to all things.

Decorated with the kindness of wise beauty and crowned with the Kingdom, God-wise, and rich in light, Philip, we enlighten the pre-eminent Light with radiances, rejoicing, O Lord of your throne, blessed no, you're coming.

Luminous

Having returned the flow of your red legs, Philip, you ascended to the heavenly procession, rejoicing, and, having presented yourself to the Trinity, you see in the Father the Son and the Divine Spirit. For this reason, by faith, we celebrate your all-sacred and divine memory.

Glory, even now: I remember the hour of terrible testing, for the multitude of my deeds terrifies and frightens me. But be generous, O Most Pure One, with Your warm prayer and grant me salvation: as much as you wish, do as you did, as blessed Mary gave birth to God.

What a Christian Should Remember

There are words of Holy Scripture and prayers that it is advisable to know by heart.

1. The Lord's Prayer “Our Father” (Matthew 6:9-13; Luke 11:2-4). 2. The main commandments of the Old Testament (Deut. 6:5; Lev. 19:18). 3. The main gospel commandments (Matt. 5, 3-12; Matt. 5, 21-48; Matt. 6, 1; Matt. 6, 3; Matt. 6, 6; Matt. 6, 14-21; Matt. 6, 24-25; Matthew 7, 1-5; Matthew 23, 8-12; John 13, 34). 4.Symbol of Faith. 5. Morning prayers and evening prayers according to a short prayer book. 6. The number and meaning of the sacraments.

The sacraments must not be mixed with rituals. A ritual is any outward sign of reverence that expresses our faith. A sacrament is a sacred act during which the Church calls on the Holy Spirit, and His grace descends on the believers. There are seven such sacraments: Baptism, Confirmation, Communion (Eucharist), Repentance (Confession), Marriage (Wedding), Blessing of Anointing (Unction), Priesthood (Ordination) ...

Iconography

On Orthodox icons, Saint Marina, or Margaret, is depicted in three ways:

  • waist-high;
  • in full height;
  • with a demon.

The most common icon is one in which the great martyr is dressed in blue and red clothes. The red color symbolizes her blood sacrifice in the name of Christ. Blue color means holiness. In her right hand Saint Marina holds a cross. With her left hand she holds the small winged demon standing next to her by the horn. On other icons, a scroll with the Holy Scriptures is depicted in the saint’s left hand. The works of Greek icon painters depict Saint Marina slaying a demon. The Great Martyr is depicted with a hammer, which she swings at the dragon. In the background of the icons you can see the city or Christians in torment.
