The life of the Orthodox Saint Alla and what they ask for in front of the icon, prayer

When is Alla's name day?

Although this name has an ancient history, in the Orthodox calendar there is only one day a year when the day of the angel Alla is officially celebrated (April 8). On this day, the Orthodox Church honors the memory of the martyr who suffered for her faith back in the fourth century AD, that is, during the persecution of Christians. Saint Alla of Goth was a laywoman.

Little information has been preserved about her life, but there is reason to believe that her tribe lived in the Danube territories or in the Crimea. When King Athanaric came to power, he was furious at how actively his subjects were turning from paganism to Christianity. Athanaric pursued a policy of persecution, persecuting all Christians.

According to legend, the king's protege Vingurik drove a cart with a pagan idol through the streets of the city, calling on everyone to worship the false god and sacrifice him. Those who refused were taken into the building that served as their temple. Among these people was Saint Alla. She, along with three hundred other Christians, was burned alive, but history has recorded the names of only 26 martyrs.

According to another theory, Alla is identified in historical consciousness with Gaafa, the widow of one of the Gothic kings. Here she did not die in the fire, but was stoned to death several years later when she tried to collect the remains of the martyrs to transfer them to Syria. It is not known for certain which theory is correct, since there is generally little information about the history of the Goths.

Meaning and veneration in Orthodoxy

On March 26 according to the old style (April 8 according to the new calendar), the Orthodox Church celebrates the day of the angel of the Great Martyr Alla Gotfa. Christians have no other saint with this name.

The holy martyr gives special protection to women who bear her name. It helps them in gaining confidence and solving many problems.

They ask Saint Alla:

  • help in raising children in accordance with Orthodox traditions;
  • strengthen faith;
  • get rid of loneliness;
  • provide assistance in making friends;
  • protect from enemies.

The martyr patronizes people caring for seriously ill people.

Characteristics of the name

Little Allochka is the owner of enormous charm, with which she amazes both her peers and adults. The girl realizes early on that she is attractive and pleasant to other people, so she is not shy about using this property. She likes to stand out from other girls, but she prefers to do it with her appearance. Internally, such girls are not the most diligent students. Alla is a good student, but she has no particular interest in studying.

Allochka is a very artistic person. This accompanies her all her life. She basks in the rays of adoration from fans, but cannot reveal her true feelings. Alla is looking for a man who will see the inner essence in her, and not just a pretty picture. At the same time, she will conflict with another strong personality, since she is used to commanding people and dictating her terms to them. Independence is her real credo.

Such people always fight for their happiness and are distinguished by stubbornness and firmness. She is a woman who knows how to stand up for herself. It’s not easy with her, because sometimes her domineering qualities cross all boundaries.

Orthodox Church calendar

Alla Gotfskaya is revered by the Orthodox Church as a martyr who suffered for the faith, for Christ. With particular solemnity, believers honor her memory on March 26 (April 8).

Not much evidence has been preserved about the life of Saint Alla. In addition, not all historical information about this martyr that has survived to this day is consistent with each other.

It is reliably known that Saint Alla lived in the 4th century. It is also known that her martyrdom was associated with the death of Christians who were burned alive in the temple during worship. It is difficult to say where exactly, geographically, this temple was located. According to a very general assessment, it was located on the territory of the Danube Gothia.

According to legend, the temple was set on fire by Gothic executioners on the orders of the Gothic ruler Ungerich (Ungerik). Identifying the identity of this ruler also encountered difficulties among researchers. Sometimes he is mistaken for the same person as Athanaric, a hater and fierce persecutor of Christians.

It is alleged that the mass conversion of his subjects to Christ aroused inhuman anger and bestial rage in Ungerich. During his reign, many Christians were brutally tortured and executed, and quite often the executions were carried out without due process.

According to ancient legend, as a result of the arson of a Christian temple at Ungerich, 308 Christians burned. The historical chronicle has brought to us the names of 26 of them; the names of the remaining martyrs are known only to God.

There is evidence that Ungeric ruled during the reigns of the emperors Valentinian, Valens and Gratian. If we accept them as authentic, we must assume that the period of Ungerich’s rule was long. The date of the burning of 308 pilgrims is presumably determined to be the year 375.

According to the famous Life, Saint Alla died in the flames of that same fire, along with other brothers and sisters in Christ. It was then that she was awarded the crown of martyrdom.

Meanwhile, other sources that identify Alla with the wife of another Gothic ruler, Gaatha, have a different opinion. According to these sources, Alla or Gaafa was not among the Christians who died in the fire, but suffered martyrdom several years after the incident.

If you follow this data, after the fire she, together with her daughter Duklida, appeared at the ashes and reverently collected the remains of the burnt saints. Having thus honored the memory of the martyrs, she entrusted the reign to her son and set off to wander.

During her travels, her daughter, Duclida, and several elders were with her. Gaafa moved from place to place until she finally settled in the Syrian country (that is, in Syria). However, there is reason to believe that Gaafa settled not in Syria, but in another country - Rome, on the territory of modern Romania.

Some time later, Gaafa called her son, after which, together with him, she returned to her homeland, to Gothia.

Soon after arriving in the Fatherland, she shed her blood for Christ: she was stoned along with Agathon.

She previously transferred the relics of the burnt martyrs to Duclida for safekeeping. Duklida gave some of them to the Christians of the city of Cyzicus. She rested peacefully in the Lord several years after her mother's death.

The opinion that Saint Alla and Saint Gaafa are one historical person does not have reliable confirmation.

Prayers to the saints

The pious widow of the Gothic king Alla mourned the destruction of Christians and the destruction of temples. With her daughter Duklida, Alla, despite the ban, collected the remains of the martyrs, transported them to Syria and buried them there. She was stoned and died a martyr along with her son Agathon. They pray to her for strengthening faith and courage during persecution for the faith, for fulfilling Christian duty in temptations and persecution. Martyr Alla is asked for prayerful help in the Christian upbringing of children and strengthening their faith, for she herself raised children who were saints. Saint Alla is the patroness of medical and social workers working in hospices, nursing homes, caring for the terminally ill, and helping to bury the lonely and unknown.

Your Lamb, Jesus, Allah, calls with a great voice: I love You, my bridegroom, and those who seek You suffer, and are crucified and buried in Your baptism, and I suffer for Your sake, for I reign in You, and I die for You, and I live with By You: but as an immaculate sacrifice, accept me with love, sacrificed to You. With your prayers, as if you are merciful, save our souls.

Having found your all-holy temple as a healing for souls, all of us, the faithful, loudly cry out to you: “Martyr Alla, whose name is glorious, pray to Christ God unceasingly for all of us!”

IMAGE INFORMATION

Among the icons of holy martyrs is the icon of the martyr Alla.

The Holy Martyr Alla was the wife of King Gothia. Under the Gothic king Ungerich, many martyrs suffered, holding services and preaching the Christian faith. Emperor Ungerich, having learned that services were being held in churches, sent his faithful servants to burn down the temples. There were three hundred and eight people in the temples. The servants set fire to the temples along with the people. After this, if a person was seen carrying an offering to the temple, he was immediately interrogated. If this person confessed his faith in Christ, he was immediately executed, thrown into the fire, that is, thus, the body of a Christian was brought to Christ as an offering. The bodies of the holy martyrs were collected by the emperor's wife Alla. She was Gothic by origin and of Christian faith.

When Saint Alla returned to Gotthia, she and her son Agathon were stoned, after which she died a martyr. Duclidia, the daughter of Saint Alla, did not live long after the death of her mother and died quietly a few years later.

The face of Alla is depicted on the icon of Alla the Holy Martyr.

icons of patron saints

Icon painter Marina Filippova paints icons of patron saints, imbued with the personality of the person who wants to receive the icon, writes specifically for this person, feeling what palette, what sound of color, or rather, the light coming from the painted images, will be closer to the soul of the person praying, more healing for his spirit.

The icons of the patron saints of the venerable bear within themselves the prototypes of those who, with their entire earthly life, with all their might, sought to become like the spiritual heights to which the Lord calls us. The blessed ones, for example, also stand on the same level as the saints, only their earthly lives were different. They led the life of holy fools, but, like the saints, they had the gift of prophecy and wonderworking during their lifetime.

We call saints people who during their lifetime had a metropolitan rank - an episcopal rank, who through their lives as primates raised their flock in the Christian spirit. We see their faces on the icons of the patron saints of Nicholas of Myra. Spyridon of Trimifuntsky. Tikhon of Zadonsk, Philaret of Moscow, Theophan the Recluse.

Equal to the Apostles brought people the light of Christ's teaching, defended, like the Apostles, the Christian faith in all corners of the earth, that is, they led a life equal to the life of His disciples after His Ascension, defending the true faith and its values and expanding the borders of the Christian world, but not with the sword, but with words and example. Since ancient times, icons of patron saints depicting Equal-to-the-Apostles Constantine and Helen. Duchess Olga. the noble princes Alexander Nevsky and Dmitry Donskoy became images of house churches and home iconostases.

Those who have sick people in their family and who need frequent daily prayer for healing from an illness should choose icons of saints - patron saints of healers and miracle workers, for example Panteleimon. or the unmercenary doctors of the martyrs Cosmas and Damian. Cyrus and John.

Icons of patron saints. their amazing, bright faces accompany the spiritual and worldly life of every Orthodox Christian. And when we need the highest help of the Lord himself, and it seems to us that our prayer is not complete or not strong, we turn to them for prayerful help and intercession and, standing in front of the icons of saints - patron saints of healers, martyrs, equal to the apostles and saints, we ask them to convey our prayers go all the way to His Throne.

Meanings of the name Alla

Allah translated from Arabic: Arab. إلهة‎‎ - goddess; from Greek: Greek. Αλλη (Alli) - “other”; from Gothic: Alls - everything, Alla (presumably) - “can do everything”, “jack of all trades”; in Hebrew Hebrew אלה‎ can have two meanings: 1. goddess, 2. pistachio tree. The name is quite popular, especially in cities.

In Orthodoxy, the name Alla is associated with Saint Alla, who was the widow of one of the Gothic leaders and lived in the 4th century AD. e. on the territory of modern Ukraine. We know about her from the story of the historian Sozomen about the 26 Gothic martyrs. Regardless of where her name came from or what it meant, Saint Alla was present in the calendar, the standard source from which Orthodox Christians (Russians, Ukrainians, Belarusians) chose names for their children.

Hypothesis of Semitic origin of the name

The Christian saint poorly explains the use of the name among Muslim peoples (Azerbaijanis, Kazan Tatars). However, there is also a hypothesis of the Chaldean origin of the name, from Allat, the mistress of the kingdom of the dead in the beliefs of the ancient Chaldeans; or Arabic, from the pre-Islamic Arab goddess Allat. Even in the middle of the first millennium AD, daughters were named in her honor.

However, with the adoption of Islam, the independent use of this name among Arab women ceased to occur, and now the name Alla is common among Arabs only as a diminutive of the male name Aladdin (for example, Alla Muhammad). But, nevertheless, among the modern non-religious population, the influence of such a beautiful image of a female goddess is quite likely.

The word "goddess", due to the commonality of the root, sounds similar in other Semitic languages, and although this name is also common among secular Israelis, the exact Hebrew pronunciation is lost, and in modern Hebrew the word Ivr. אלה‎has acquired a different vowel, it is pronounced closer to Ella than to Alla and is more associated with pistachio.

Hypothesis of the Scandinavian origin of the name

Icelanders claim that is:Alla is a native Icelandic name. Also found in Sweden. Due to the relatedness of the Gothic and Icelandic languages, this strengthens the claim of a Gothic origin. In addition, the name Alla is also used as a diminutive of other names starting with A, for example from Norse. Aila - lucky, worthy of the gods; or from Swedish Adel is noble. It is quite possible that St. Alla was called by her diminutive name.

The weakness of the previous hypothesis is that the story of Alla Gothic is known to us from one single source, and there is also a widespread assumption that the word Αλλα in the text of Sozomen about the 26 Gothic martyrs is not a name at all, but the Greek word Αλλη (other, other) . Whose mistake is, the author’s or the copyist’s, does not matter, but what was meant was “and another Gothic woman, whose name has not been established”; or in general, this is the conjunction Αλλα (however), which relates to the next sentence (cf.: Lieutenant Kizhe).

Hypothesis of Celtic origin of the name

In the list of Druid deities, Alla is mentioned at number 408. In Irish mythology, Alla is one of the wives of Fintan mac Bóchra.

Hypothesis of Slavic origin of the name

There are suggestions that the modern spread of the name Alla among Russians is due to the fact that it is associated with the word “scarlet” and the artistic images of Scarlet Sails and the Scarlet Flower, that is, with the expectation of happiness and hope. It is interesting that in English-language literature there is a vivid image of a woman fighting for her happiness, whose name is also associated with the color scarlet - Scarlett O'Hara in Gone with the Wind (English: scarlet - “scarlet”).

Hypothesis of Proto-Indo-European origin of the name

It is also possible that this name has Proto-Indo-European roots. Thus, among the most ancient deities in the Caucasus, the names of two goddesses of fate have been preserved - Alla and Bella, whose power was sometimes placed above the power of the Supreme God.

Hypothesis of combined origin of the name

Since none of the above hypotheses is able to explain all the features of the use and distribution of the name, it is quite possible that the later unification by consonance of two names that had different origins is quite possible. And there is simply no single correct meaning of the name.

My history

The holy martyrs Alla and Larisa suffered with other martyrs in the first half of the 4th century in Gotthia, where, by order of King Ungerik, they were burned in the temple during a church service.

St. Gaafa, the wife of another Gothic king, together with her daughter Duclida, collected the remains of the holy martyrs and retired with them to Cyzicus (in the Crimea). When Gaafa returned to Gothia, the enraged pagans threw stones at her. Her daughter, St. Duclida, died peacefully in Cyzicus.

When my mother got married for the second time, her husband had a daughter, Lara, and a son, Sasha. I must say, she and I suffered together because my mother and her father began to live together. But then she went to live in her own apartment, which her father left her , a three-room apartment. Larisa began to lead a terrible life, she drank, something like a brothel was organized at home. She was sliding into the abyss, there was dirt and horror in her house.

Before she left to live on her own, she caused me a lot of trouble: she read my diary and told her classmates who I was secretly in love with, this was a real betrayal on her part. Enraged at school, I attacked her and her friend with my fists and beat her, when they tried to mock me. I needed to stand up for my desecrated love, self-respect and cruel betrayal. She carried my things on the sly and spoiled them, this also annoyed me. In general, we didn’t manage to live together and she went to her place to live there. She drank herself to death, she had the same friends. It was horror. And for some reason I went to another part of the city to her apartment to help her, cleaned her house, helped, carried her things for her, cooked. Her brother Sasha, in a drunken mood, decided to confess his love to me, when I refused him marriage, he attacked me and began to strangle me. this is horror. I don’t know how I stayed alive, how they pulled him away from me, there were signs of suffocation on my neck for half a year. After that I stopped going and helping them. It was some kind of self-sacrifice, I don’t know why I went and helped them. And here is the result. After this incident, I never went there again. Sasha committed suicide after that, of course they blamed me for this, they said that I did not answer his feelings that he had for me since childhood. And he also wrote such a posthumous note left. This is horror, of course, because I never gave him a reason. When I came to the funeral, there was just a scandal, at first everyone fell silent, surrounded me, their faces were full of hatred and they kicked me out, as if I had bewitched all the men around me, and older women shouted in my face, relatives of Sasha and Larisa. There were also those who were in sects, so they declared me a witch. They shouted that I was the master’s daughter and that I should go to my professor daddy. I didn’t want to write this in the post, but these people then insulted me terribly, I was honestly shocked, and everyone knew how much I helped, how this man strangled me. Why does this happen in life, do people throw stones at you for doing good? It’s true, horse and ox, and ox with ox. This is a sad story connected with Larisa and her brother. It turns out that I, too, were martyrs with her, so you can probably say.

And today I found what the icons of my Saint Alla look like and her story. I must say the story of Saint Alla and Lara blew my mind and I only found out about it this morning.

We never saw her again, especially after the funeral. This is the story I told you. Is it necessary to throw beads? Should you give help when you are not asked for it? To impose your company when you are not asked. I think not. But then this is exactly what I thought was right, some force forced me to take these steps of self-sacrifice.

I was baptized in April as an adult. It was also an interesting and unusual baptism. I then learned about Saint Alla that her day is celebrated on April 8th.

Saint Alla of Goth

Holy Martyr Alla of Gothia - Queen of Gothia (Gothia was located on the territory of present-day Crimea), who lived in the 4th century during the reign of the pagan king Athanaric. In 375, by order of King Ungerik (Yungerich), son of Atanaric, 308 Christians were burned during a church service in the Temple, of whom the names of only 26 martyrs became known. Despite the ban, Alla, together with her daughter Duklida, collected the relics of the martyrs burned in the temple and took them away from Gothia to illuminate the new temple under construction. But, returning to her homeland, she was beaten to death with stones and sticks along with her son Agathon.

They pray to Alla Gotfskaya to strengthen the Christian faith and ask for help in the Christian upbringing of children. She is also considered the patroness of social workers caring for seriously ill and dying people. Saint Alla is also considered one of the patrons of the Crimean land.

What helps and what should we pray for to the holy martyr Alla of Goth?

They pray to the Martyr Alla for deliverance from loneliness and finding true friends. In prayers the saint is also addressed to ask for protection from enemies and ill-wishers.

They pray to Alla Gotfskaya, who raised her children in the deep Christian faith, despite the paganism that flourished around her, to raise her children and strengthen their piety. Saint Alla is the patroness of medical and social workers working in hospices, nursing homes, caring for the terminally ill, and helping to bury the lonely and unknown.

The Holy Martyr Alla Gotfa is also God's intercessor and heavenly patroness of all women who bear her name. There are no other saints in Christianity who bear the name Alla.

Prayer to the holy martyr Alla Gotfa

Pray to God for me, holy servant of God, Allah, as I diligently resort to you, an ambulance and prayer book for my soul.

Life of the Holy Martyr Alla Gotfskaya

Martyr Alla is a Christian saint who lived in the 4th century in Gothia (the territory on the site of modern Crimea, formerly called Tauria) during the reign of the Roman emperors Valence, Valentinian and Gratian. Christianity came to Gotthia in 341, when the first Christian priest set foot on it, in this year many people in this region converted to Christianity. However, the war with the Roman Empire prevented the spread of Christianity.

In Gothia at that time there were many small clans, each of which was headed by its own king. All of them were united under the control of the pagan king Athanaric. Alla was the queen and wife of one of the Gothic kings, who was a pious Christian. But having become an early widow, she left her throne to her son and went to wander with several elders and her daughter Duklida (Lydia).

The name of Saint Alla of Goth is inextricably linked with the other 26 Gothic martyrs, who in 375, by order of the pagan king Atanrich, were burned in the temple during a church sermon by the Arian bishop Ulfila. This event is described in detail in the ancient synaxarium of the Gothic Church.

At that time, the cruel Athanaric, an ardent pagan and persecutor of Christians, carried out mass executions. In order to find all Christians, Athanaric ordered his subjects to install a statue of the pagan idol Wotan on a chariot and drive it through the streets of the city. Those who did not worship her or make sacrifices were to be captured and executed. One day, a cart with an idol drove past a temple in which a Christian service was taking place. A guard entered the temple and announced to the believers about the approaching cart. But none of the Christians went out into the street and remained to serve Christ. Angry pagans locked the believers in the Temple, hammered the doors and burned them alive. In total, 308 people were burned, but information about only 26 Gothic martyrs has survived to this day.

According to the historian Sozomen, author of Church History, Alla was burned in the Temple along with other martyrs, and her daughter Duklida collected the relics of the saints and transferred them to Syria. According to Dmitry Rostovsky, Alla was not in the Temple among those burned. And after a terrible fire, she and her daughter, despite a strict ban, secretly collected the relics of the holy martyrs to transport them to Syria. But she could not do this, since she was stoned to death along with her son Agathon. Her daughter Duclida transported the remaining relics of the burnt martyrs to Cyzicus (Kizikos, a settlement located in the Crimea) and gave them for the founding of a new Temple. Duklida herself died in peace a few years later.

>Prayers to the saints

Holy Alla the Great Martyr, what do they pray to her for?

Pray to God for me, holy servant of God, Allah, as I diligently resort to you, an ambulance and prayer book for my soul.

Life of the Holy Martyr Alla

Icon of the holy martyr Alla (fragment), icon painter Yuri Kuznetsov On the territory of modern Eastern Europe in the 4th century lived German tribes called Goths. They consisted of several clans, each of which had its own ruler. Saint Alla was the wife of one of the Gothic kings. The kings ruled the Goths separately, but to participate in hostilities they united under the rule of one person.

Facts of history In 341, King Fritigen asked the Roman Emperor Valens to send him a Christian bishop. Wulfila became the first priest on Gothic land. Thanks to him, many people accepted Christianity, including Saint Alla. But the massive spread of faith was prevented by the outbreak of war with the Roman Empire.

To repel the enemy’s attack, all the Gothic tribes united under the rule of the leader Athanaric (according to some sources, the Gothic king Ungerik). The war lasted two years. After peace was concluded, the king turned his wrath on the Christians, calling them Roman spies. Athanaric wanted to completely destroy them and came up with a cruel way to do this. A cart containing a sculpture of the god Wotan was transported to all villages. Everywhere she stopped, people had to go out and worship the pagan idol.

Life according to the version of Demetrius of Rostov There is no exact information that Saint Alla of Goths suffered martyrdom in the church. Dimitry Rostovsky describes a different story.

On that day, Queen Alla Gotfskaya was in her palace, where she learned about the tragic events in the temple. She was shocked by what happened, because she herself was a Christian. Having learned that Atanarich had forbidden the burial of the dead, she became indignant. Something had to be done. She could not send servants, they were pagans. Together with her daughter Duklida, Saint Alla herself went to the fire. Among the ashes, they collected the relics of Christians and took them to Syria. There she left her daughter with priceless relics and, together with her son, who came to meet her, returned back to Gotthia. But as soon as they entered the city, the pagans attacked them and stoned them to death. Someone still found out about the act of the queen, who accepted the crown of martyrdom.

A few days later, Duclida transported the relics of Christians to Cyzicus (in Crimea). There she gave them to the consecration of a new temple.

__________________________________________________________ 1 GOTHIA, CRIMEAN GOTHIA, GOTHIA - territorial region, principality. Historical documents provide scattered and not entirely clear information about the German tribe of Goths, which appeared in the Black Sea region in the 2nd century, part of which settled in the Crimea, surrounded by Scythian, Sarmatian, and Alan tribes. Under pressure from the Huns in the 70s of the 4th century, the bulk of the Goths left for the Danube Valley. Gothia, Crimean Gothia, Gotthia began to be called the area between the Belbek River and Cape Ai-Todor after three thousand Goths settled in it, who in 448 did not leave Crimea for Italy along with the Gothic king Theodoric. From the 6th century the Goths were subordinated to Byzantium.

The meaning of the icon The icon of St. Alla of Gotth expresses a person’s readiness for faith. It doesn’t matter whether he was a Christian from childhood or believed in his mature years. If he is truly ready for faith, then it is no longer possible for him to give up.

What a miracle happened. The relics of the dead Christians, brought to Cyzicus by Duklida, were placed in the altar of the church. This action was performed according to the canonical tradition to create a connection between the earthly and heavenly Churches. The presence of relics in the church means the presence of saints at the service; they take part in the prayers that people read. That is why believers receive healing over holy relics.

Alla Gotfskaya [1] is revered by the Orthodox Church as a martyr who suffered for the faith, for Christ.

During the persecution of Christians (in the 3rd century), one pious woman named Rufina fled from Corinth to the mountains to escape persecution. There she gave birth to a son, Kodrat, and died soon after giving birth. By the providence of God, the baby remained alive and was nourished miraculously: a cloud descended on him, feeding him with sweet dew. Saint Kodrat spent his childhood and youth in the desert. As an adult, he once met Christians who enlightened him with the light of true faith. Kodrat learned to read and write, and later studied the art of medicine and achieved great success in it. But most of all, Kodrat loved desert silence and spent most of his time in the mountains, indulging in prayer and contemplation of God. Many years later. His friends and followers often came to the saint in the desert to listen to his instructions. Among them were Cyprian, Dionysius, Anekt, Paul, Crescent and many others.

By order of the persecutor of Christians, the wicked Decius (249–251), the military leader Jason arrived in Corinth. Saint Kodrat was captured along with his friends and thrown into prison. During interrogations, Jason most often addressed Kodrat as the eldest in age. The saint courageously defended his faith in Christ the Savior. Then they began to torture him. Saint Kodrat, despite inhuman suffering, found the strength to support others, convincing them not to be afraid and to stand firmly for the faith. Having failed to obtain renunciation from anyone, Jason ordered the martyrs to be torn to pieces by wild beasts. The animals did not touch them. The saints were tied by their feet to chariots and dragged around the city, many from the crowd throwing stones at them. Finally, the martyrs were sentenced to beheading by sword. At the place of execution, the saints asked themselves a little time for prayer, and then one after another they began to approach the executioner, bowing their heads before the raised sword.

The rest of the disciples of Saint Codratus also suffered for Christ: Dionysius (another) was stabbed to death with a knife; Victorinus, Victor and Nikephoros were crushed alive in a huge stone mortar; Claudius's arms and legs were cut off; Diodorus himself threw himself into the fire prepared for him; Seraphion was beheaded; Papias and Leonidas were drowned in the sea. Imitating men, many holy wives voluntarily went to suffer for Christ.

Life of the Holy Martyr Galina

THE LIFE OF THE HOLY MARTYR GALINA. The Holy Martyr Galina was born in Corinth (Corinth in the 3rd century was the main city of Achaia, enlightened by the Apostle Paul). Almost no information about the life of the holy martyr has been preserved. The name of the martyr Galina is inextricably linked with the life of the righteous elder Kodrat, who converted her to faith in Christ. At the place of execution, the saints asked themselves a little time for prayer, and then one after another they began to approach the executioner, bowing their heads before the raised sword. Righteous Galina and other wives (Haryessa, Kalisa/Kalida, Nunekhia, Vasilisa, Nika, Gali, Theodora), imitating Saint Codratus and keeping his instructions in their hearts, voluntarily went to suffer for Christ. They could have taken cover, but did not. On April 16 (old style) they were beheaded... At the place where the Corinthian martyrs were executed for Christ, a source of clean water appeared - to remind Corinth of the suffering of the saints who shed rivers of their blood. According to another legend, the holy women Galina, Chariessa, Nunekhia, Kalis (Kalida), Vasilissa, Nik, Gali, Theodora - disciples of the elder Codratus - together with the holy martyr Leonidas were thrown into the sea, but they did not drown, but walked on water as on dry land , and sang spiritual hymns. The torturers caught up with them on the ship, hung stones around their necks and drowned them. Memorial Day of the Holy Martyr Galina of Corinth - April 29 (new style)

Orthodox believers have a fairly large number of saints to whom they bow and pray for help and intercession. One of these revered saints is the martyr Galina. Her image helps from many troubles and misfortunes.

What do they pray to Saint Galina for?

Surely not everyone knows what they pray to Saint Galina for and the meaning of the icon with her image. As mentioned above, the icon has a special meaning for girls with the same name, but besides this, all Christians are converted in the following cases:

  • in case of doubts and cowardice,
  • upon the conversion of apostates,
  • during persecution.

Saint Galina helps to defend faith, truth and achieve truth.

The prayer call for help from the holy martyr sounds like this:

Pray to God for me, holy saint of God Galina, as I diligently resort to you, an ambulance and prayer book for my soul.

May the Lord protect you!

You will be interested in watching a video about the day of remembrance of the Corinthian martyrs Galina, Kondrat and others:

The third century AD was a turbulent time for the Roman Empire. Uprisings broke out periodically and foundations were shaken. The new emperor Gaius Decius, who came to power, decided to return his fellow citizens to the religion of their ancestors. He probably thought that the gods were sending troubles because people stopped making sacrifices to them so often. The icon of Galina, who suffered during this period, recalls the many martyrs who died for the faith in the Roman provinces.

Story

In that distant period, Christians did not have churches, although there were places where secret meetings took place. People learned about faith from their acquaintances, friends, or by accident. Not every community had a priest. Although the church as an organization existed, communication between cities was hampered by huge distances, persecution also did not improve the situation.

Many Christians suffered in Corinth, including Saint Galina. Her icons have preserved for the Orthodox the bright face of a young woman. She was a student of the hermit Kondrat. The community was not very large, but friendly. Many people gathered around the elder. The saint was from a Christian family; his parents were killed when he was still a baby. Kondrat grew up pious and often retired to the mountains to pray. History has preserved for us the names of other disciples of the Corinthian martyr:

  • St. Cyprian;
  • St. Dionysius;
  • St. Hariessa;
  • St. Nika;
  • St. Theodora and others

Church memory remembers everyone on one day, since they became famous together, and prayer is also common. In frequent prayer, you can ask your patron saint for any help.

Persecution

When Decius ascended the throne, he decided to “restore order” to religion. An important point was regular sacrifices. But the inhabitants of the empire began to show negligence in this. The pagan emperor believed that this was why fortune began to turn away from Rome. He issued a decree according to which everyone was obliged to sacrifice an animal, taste its meat, after which the citizen was given a special certificate (libelus).

Since Christians refused to worship pagan gods, they were the first to be attacked. Saint Galina and other Christians, who are depicted on a number of icons together, were arrested. At first they tried to persuade them - many Christians actually made sacrifices and received libeluses, but not Kondrat’s disciples. They patiently awaited judgment in prison, preparing their souls for eternity.

The emperor's viceroy initially tried to convince the martyr to renounce his faith through conversation. St. Kondrat presented his arguments to him, but the boss did not want to believe that God could become a man. He ordered the saint to be tortured by hanging him upside down.

Heavenly helper

For every Christian, the day of baptism is special; on this holiday, an image of the saint of the same name would be an appropriate gift. The meaning of the icon for babies baptized with the name Galina will be to receive heavenly protection. The icon must be placed in the home iconostasis. You can hang it near the crib, just so that the child cannot reach the shrine.

An older child can be taught a short prayer - “Saint Galina, pray to God for me.” Let the child pray near the icon in the morning and evening. The meaning of prayer is to expel all vanity and unnecessary thoughts from the heart. Having become accustomed to praying from an early age, the child will then easily enter the church environment. There it will be easier to resist the temptations of the world around us, to which more and more young people are succumbing.

In this simple way, the icon of St. Galina can help in educating the younger generation. You can pray for the granting of patience, increasing faith, and protection from enemies.

Prayer to the holy martyr Leonid and the martyrs Hariessa, Nika, Galina, Kalisa, Nunekhia, Vasilisa, Theodora, Irina and others like them who suffered

O holy martyr! Extend your favorable prayers to our Lord and Creator and beg His goodness to grant us (names) everything necessary for eternal salvation, and also necessary for this temporary life: we believe without a doubt that everything is possible for you, as His true saint. Hey, holy wonderworkers! Do not disgrace our hope, but through your prayers make us heirs of being the Kingdom of Christ, so that we glorify the love of mankind in the Trinity of the glorified and worshiped God, the Father and the Son and the Holy Spirit, and your holy intercession, forever and ever.

Prayerful invocation of the saint whose name you bear

Pray to God for me, holy servant of God (name), as I diligently resort to you, a quick helper and prayer book for my soul.

In practice, the prayer to the saint is often pronounced differently, according to church custom - with the name of the rank of holiness of the heavenly intercessor, for example: “Pray to God for me, holy Archangel of God Michael...”; “Pray to God for me, holy prophet of God Elijah...”

In this part of the prayer rule it is also good to include a troparion to your patron saint, which should be known and understood.

martyrs

March 26 (Julian calendar)

Alla Gothskaya (d. about 375) is a Gothic queen, revered in Orthodoxy as a martyr. The memory of Saint Alla is celebrated on March 26 (April 8) (according to the Julian calendar).

Saint Alla was one of the 26 martyrs killed by the Goths around 375 during the reign of Athanaric, the persecutor of Christians. The ancient synaxariums of the Gothic Church mention the martyrdom of 26 Christians during the times of the emperors Valentinian, Valens and Gratian.

The historian Sozomen, author of Ecclesiastical History, wrote that King Athanaric was furious that his subjects were massively adopting Christianity under the influence of the sermons of the Arian bishop Wulfila. On his orders, many of them were tortured and executed, often without trial. Athanaric installed a statue in a chariot and carried Christians in front of the tents, which were used for church services. Those who agreed to worship idols and make sacrifices were spared. The rest were burned alive in the church during the service. 308 people died in the fiery hell, of which only 26 are known by name, among them Saint Alla.

During the reign of the emperors Valentinian (383-392) and Theodosius (378-395), Gaata, the widow of the Gothic king (who was an Orthodox Christian), and her daughter Duclida collected the relics of the holy martyrs and transferred them to Syria. Gaata later returned to her homeland, where she was stoned and martyred along with her son Agathon.

Later, Duclida transferred the relics of the holy martyrs to the city of Cyzicus in Asia Minor and transferred the relics to the newly built churches.

The Gothic calendar celebrated the memory of Saint Alla on October 23.

According to Demetrius of Rostov, Saint Alla was not among those burned, but instead of Gaata, she collected relics and was stoned to death.

Life of the Holy Martyr Alla Gotfskaya

First, we will tell you how the Germanic tribes ended up in Crimea and why in Christianity a saint with the German-Scandinavian name Alla is venerated as martyrs. The Goths, or Goths, came from Germany to the Black Sea region around the 2nd century and remained there, living side by side with the tribes of Scythians, Alans and Sarmatians in the territory of modern Taurus. In the 70s of the 4th century, the Huns came here from the west and, in wars of conquest, pushed their settlements to the Danube valley. Historically, the Crimean part of Gothia, or Gotthia, was located between Belbek (northwest of Sevastopol) and Cape Ai-Todor, where three thousand Goths stayed to live, who did not want to go to Italy with King Theodoric. In 341, with the arrival of Christian priests on the territory of Crimea, part of the Goths accepted Christianity and preserved it; archaeological finds on the territory of modern Sevastopol became evidence of their presence here. Presumably, the border between Gotthia - Gothia and Chersonesos on the plain part of Crimea, whose ancient name was Tavria, passed near Inkerman and along the valley of the Chernaya River. All this happened during the reign of the Roman emperors Valentinian and Gratian, who replaced him, under the Gothic king Ungeric, otherwise - Yungerich, the son of Atanaric, subordinate to them. Under the rule of Ungerich there were several clans, headed by their own, lesser-ranking king or king. Wanting to get rid of all Christians in one fell swoop, the Gothic king resorted to treachery: he ordered a statue of the supreme deity of the German-Scandinavian pantheon, Odin, aka Wotan, to be placed on a chariot and driven through the streets of Gothic cities. Those who refused to bow to the idol were to be executed. A service was going on in one of the Christian churches at that time. When the chariot with the statue stopped opposite the entrance and those carrying it demanded that all Christians interrupt the service, come out and worship Odin, none of the Christians came out, the service was not interrupted, and then the pagans, angry at the refusal and disregard for the will of the king, hammered the doors of the building tightly and set it on fire . According to the historian Sozomen, there were several temples, and they were all set on fire under the same circumstances. However, the number of martyrs remains unchanged: then 308 people were burned, of whom the names of only a few are known, commemorated on one day, April 8 according to the new style, among whom the name of the martyr Alla Gotfskaya is mentioned. Their names were the presbyters Vafusius and Verk with his four children, the monk Arpila, and among the laity the martyrs Aviv, Agn, Reas, Igafrax, Iskoy, Sila, Sigitz, Soniril, Suimvl, Ferm, Phil, Constance, Prince Agathon and the martyrs Anna, Alla , Larisa, Moiko, Mamika, Uirko, Animaisa (Animaida), Gaafa, Queen of Goth. Information has also been preserved about a certain Christian who came to the temple with an offering just before the execution and then confessed Christ, for which he appeared before God among others. Saint Demetrius of Rostov writes that there was only one temple, and among those burned there, Saint Alla, the ruling widow of the Gothic king of one of the clans, as well as Prince Agathon, was not present. It was Alla Gotfskaya, as the saint writes, who collected the remains of martyrs in different places, leaving the reign to her son Arimerius, and later passed them on to her daughter Duklida, in some sources she is called Lydia. According to Demetrius of Rostov, the holy martyr Alla retired to the country of Syria, but again there is no consensus among researchers as to whether this was the part of Asia Minor where Syria is now located, or whether it was the part of present-day Romania subject to Rome. She then returned to Gothia and upon her return was stoned along with Prince Agathon. Before her martyrdom, she handed over the remains of the Gothic martyrs to her daughter Duclida, who, during the reign of the next Roman emperor Theodosius, brought them for the consecration of a temple in the city of Cyzicus, in the Crimea, and, according to the book by S. Kharitonov “The Ancient City of Eski-Kermen”, according to the research of F Schmidt, they are placed in the Eske-Kermen Basilica.

However, according to the information of the modern Orthodox Encyclopedia, the publication of which was begun with the blessing of Patriarch Alexy II of Moscow and All Rus' and is now continued with the blessing of Patriarch Kirill of Moscow and All Rus', the holy martyr Alla was nevertheless executed along with other famous martyrs who were burned in the temple. Nevertheless, the acts of saving the remains of the Gothic martyrs, attributed by Saint Demetrius to the life of Saint Alla, were carried out by another Gothic queen, Gaafa, and Duklida was her daughter. As for Duklida, she, according to both versions, transferred the relics of the martyrs to the Crimean Cyzicus for the temple and later died in peace. The meaning of the icon Ancient history is a very confusing thing. The chronology has changed, sometimes shifting relative to each other, so much so that today it is difficult to establish the exact time of this or that event or the life time of a historical figure, including saints. In restoring their biographies, both ancient chroniclers and, even more so, modern historians are faced with very serious discrepancies in the sources of the most ancient evidence. The same thing happened with the Life of the Holy Martyr Alla of Goth. And yet, regardless of the plot of her feat, it was there - whether Saint Alla collected the remains of Christian martyrs so that the holy relics of those who suffered in the name of Christ would take their rightful place and avoid desecration, or she herself was among those who preferred painful execution to renunciation of the Truth and abandoned temporary physical life in the name of Eternal spiritual life. The memory of the 26 Gothic martyrs, or, as they are called in the Orthodox Encyclopedia, Gothic martyrs, whose names have mostly been preserved, reminds us of all 308 who remained nameless. They are nameless in human history, but none of those who suffered for Christ from His Resurrection will remain forgotten, unmentioned in one way or another. In each of the prayers pronounced before death, the words spoken by the thief crucified with Christ on Calvary are heard: “Remember me, Lord, when you come into Your Kingdom!”, which have now become the words of prayer at the divine service. And this was a robber who confessed Christ before death, and they, all 308 of Christ’s martyrs, consciously served Him, each in his own measure. Time has preserved the name of the holy martyr Alla Gotfa, and moreover, a miracle is associated with it, which you will read about below. What a miracle happened

As we have already described in the section “Where is the saint’s icon located,” in 1884, a girl was born into the Richter family, who lived in the village of Staraya Potlovka, Kolyshleysky district, Penza province, who was named Alla in honor of the holy martyr Alla Gotfskaya. She grew up smart and started going to school early with the village children. When a diphtheria epidemic occurred in the district in 1888, Alla was forbidden to attend school to avoid infection, but the Richters did not abandon the family tradition of giving gifts to rural children. Little Alya, as Alla was called at home, was diligently busy giving gifts to friends, especially since she was sad about her five friends, who were suddenly taken away by an incurable disease. Alya was already five years old, but she still had the habit of falling asleep on her mother Nadezhda Mikhailovna’s lap, clinging to her chest. On one of these evenings, already half asleep, Alya suddenly told her mother that soon the Lord would accept her too, and God would do very well. In mid-January, Alya, despite all precautions, also fell ill, and on January 31 the girl died. The parents were inconsolable. And when saying goodbye to Alya, a miracle happened, which the local old-timers later talked about: in the room of the estate where the coffin with the body of her daughter stood, an image of the Mother of God, drawn with frost, appeared on the window. The image remained for four hours, was seen by many, and then melted, but not before this miraculous phenomenon gave spiritual strength to the mother and father in their deep sadness. Alya was buried on the island of the pond in front of their estate, with a carved gazebo placed here, and black swans always swam in the pond. But some time later, in 1901, Nadezhda Mikhailovna built at her own expense the church-school of St. Alla Gotfskaya in memory of her daughter, where services were held, and every time at the prayer service the name of the girl was remembered, and here in the elongated building that continued the building of the temple, now there was a school for rural children. The remains of Alla-Ali were moved here, and for the temple, an icon “Seeking the Lost” was painted by order of the family, in memory of the miraculous appearance of the image of the Most Pure One on the window glass, which occurred on that mournful January day when the Mother of God revealed Her bright face to support the broken parental hearts.>Martyr Alla Gotfskaya

The holy martyr Alla suffered with other martyrs in the first half of the 4th century in Gothia (a historical region in the territory of modern Crimea).

Around 375, King Ungerich ordered the temple to be set on fire during the Divine Service, where all 308 of them were present. All of them died, but the names of only a few are known: Vafusius and Verk, presbyters, Arpila the monk, laymen: Aviv, Agn, Reas, Igafrax, Iskoy, Sila, Sigits, Soniril, Suimvl, Ferm, Phil, Constance, Prince Agathon and the martyrs: Anna, Alla, Larisa, Moiko, Mamika, Uirko, Animaisa (Animaida), Gaafa, Queen of Goth.

The widow of the Gothic king Alla and her daughter Duklida collected the remains of the holy martyrs and transported them to Syria. Then she returned to her homeland, where after some time she was stoned and died a martyr along with her son Agathon. The relics of the holy martyrs remained with Duclida, who, during the reign of Valentinian II (364 - 375) and Theodosius the Great (393 - 395), came to Cyzicus and donated part of the relics for the consecration of the temple. The death of the righteous Duklida was peaceful.

ABC of faith

The name Alla in the Orthodox calendar (Saints)

All Gothic tribes were united under the leadership of Athanaric. There were hostilities for two years, after which peace was concluded. Athanaric became angry with all Christians and began to call them spies from Rome. A terrible plan was born in his head; he decided to destroy all Christians in a very cruel way. By his order, a large cart was created, on which a sculpture of the pagan idol Wotan was placed. Where she passed, people had to come out and bow to him; if this did not happen, death awaited the culprit.

One day, Saint Alla went to the temple. During the service, a Gothic guard came there and announced the approaching pagan cart, calling everyone to worship. But people did not pay attention to him, their gaze was directed towards the altar, everyone continued to pray, including Alla. Then the guards hammered the doors to the church and set it on fire along with the worshipers.

However, another version has been preserved, which has survived to this day - this is the version of Dmitry of Rostov. He described what was happening in such a way that Queen Alla was not in the temple that day, but was in the palace. When she learned about what had happened, she and her daughter immediately rushed to the scene of the fire in order to somehow help the believers. But before she had time, she collected incorruptible relics from the ashes and transported them to Syria. As soon as she and her son returned to Gothia, the pagans beat them to death with stones and sticks.
