Why read the Bible
The Bible is a holy book written by holy men. They did not come up with these texts themselves, but at the inspiration of the Holy Spirit. The Bible consists of the Old and New Testaments.
The Old Testament includes the books of the ancient prophets:
- Pentateuch of Moses;
- Isaiah;
- Jeremiah;
- David;
- Ezra, etc.
They tell about the creation of the world, about how God talked with chosen people, instructed and led his people to the Promised Land. There are many prophecies here about the coming of Christ, His death on the cross and resurrection.
The New Testament contains a narrative about the earthly life of Christ, the acts of the apostles, and the letters of the apostles Peter, Paul, and John the Theologian .
There are only four Gospels:
- from Matthew;
- from Mark;
- from Luke;
- from John.
The Holy Fathers advised reading the psalter and the Gospel daily, at least one chapter at a time. The Psalter is a book of spiritual verses, most of them written by the prophet and king David. They contain prophecies about Christ, sighs to God, praises of the Lord.
The Psalter, according to the testimonies of the saints, drives out passions and unclean thoughts from the soul, and reading the Gospel fills the soul with the Holy Spirit. Therefore, this important activity should not be neglected.
