History of Christianity

Surely, many remember from the history course that the Christian religion originated in Ancient Rome a little over two thousand years ago and was the religion of slaves and beggars. Most likely, it was in her that they sought solace for themselves.

The Romans were pagans, and their gods, beautiful in face and figure, were cruel, treacherous and hypocritical. No one ever spoke about mercy; Jupiter and Juno, Ares and Venus acted like mere mortals, and the worst of them: they lied, killed, took revenge and committed adultery.

The cruel gods demanded victims and complete submission. It was at this time that the Messiah appeared - the one who taught goodness and mercy, love and obedience. The first Christians gathered in the catacombs and secretly preached the teachings of Christ.

In the history of the Christian religion there are many descriptions of the torment that Christians suffered from the pagans - the Romans. They were crucified on the cross, like Jesus, given over to wild animals, starved and stoned to death, but the first Christians were firm and unshakable in their faith.

After some time, the government realized all the benefits of the new religion, because it taught slaves to obey their masters, not to resist evil, but to be submissive to their master, and to expect reward in the Kingdom of Heaven. Thus, religion came out of the catacombs into the wider world, and very quickly began to spread throughout Europe.

History of Catholic Christianity

In 1054, the Christian Church split into two branches: the Orthodox (correct faith) with its center in Constantinople, and the Catholic (worldwide) with its center in the city of Rome.

In addition, shortly before the partition, the theological state of the Vatican was formed; these lands were granted by Pepin the Short, king of the Frankish Empire, to the head of the Christian church.

The Vatican is still the center of Catholicism today; it houses the residence of the Pope - the head of the Catholic Church, God's vicar on earth.

Today, almost all Italians are considered believers, professing the Catholic faith. According to statistics – 96%.

Although not all of them constantly visit churches and comply with all canonical requirements. Only 15% of believers are churchgoers, and residents of rural areas are much more religious than residents of cities.

Although, according to the Constitution, religion is separated from the state and the country is secular, nevertheless, it is Catholicism that has a huge influence on all aspects of the political, social, and spiritual life of the country.

At the same time, the Vatican is a powerful force and has enormous material wealth and influences the minds of not only the inhabitants of Italy, but also the whole world.

What is “Catholic Action”?

There is a strong organization in Italy called Catholic Action. Its main task is educational activities: how to raise children in the light of the Catholic religion, what literature to read, what films to watch, how to build relationships in the family, and to promote video and media materials approved by the church.

In addition, the organization monitors the activities of non-Catholic trade unions and regulates the strike activities of its workers.

In Italy, even in public schools, the Law of God is taught, and it is taught, of course, by priests who have enormous influence over their students, especially in rural areas.

Speaking about the influence of religion on the secular life of the country, one cannot fail to note its influence on politics. Thus, Pope John XX111, for example, proclaimed to the whole world that he considered the most important task of the Catholic Church to be the struggle for peace throughout the world.

The main Catholic cathedral in Italy is the Roman Basilica of St. Peter, striking in its power and beauty. On bright Easter and Christmas days, all the cathedrals and temples of Italy are full of both believers and tourists from all over the world.
