Exodus. Prophet Moses

Chapter 6

Older brother

Amram and Jochebed from the tribe of Levi had three children - the eldest daughter Miriam and sons Aaron and Moses. Aaron was older - he was born three years earlier than Moses, and his fate was happier, because he could grow up where he was born - in the house of his parents.

* * *

The fact is that a few months before the birth of Moses (he was not yet conceived), Pharaoh Ramesses II had a dream. Pharaoh saw himself in it, sitting on a throne, and in front of him he saw an unfamiliar old man holding huge scales in his left hand. The old man put the pharaoh and all the dignitaries close to him, along with the priests, on one scale, and one lamb on the other, and Ramses saw that the lamb outweighed, although this could not be so. A court sage named Bilam helped the pharaoh interpret the amazing dream. “Oh, divine Pharaoh! - he exclaimed. - The lamb represents the Jewish people, the people of shepherds! And from the dream it follows that the Jews will bring destruction to Egypt, that’s what comes out of this dream!” The court astrologer added to what Bilam had said that the stars informed him of the impending birth in the land of Goshen of a male child who would bring great misfortune to Egypt.

Pharaoh got scared and ordered all newborn boys to be thrown into the Nile. The astrologer could not say whether a baby would be born to the Egyptians or the Jews, bringing death to Egypt, so they drowned everyone. Jochebed gave birth to Moses in secret from everyone, she didn’t even invite the midwife, and Moses’ sister Mariam had to give birth. For three months the mother hid the boy, who was born without a foreskin, which was regarded as a good sign, a mark of the chosen ones. For three months Jochebed hid her newborn son, and when this became impossible, she came up with a trick to save him.

She took a basket woven from reeds, put Moses in it and left him in the reed thickets on the banks of the Nile, where Pharaoh’s daughter Fermufis came to swim every morning. Mariam, on the instructions of her mother, hid nearby and watched the basket in which her brother lay.

The mother's trick was a success - Pharaoh's daughter saw Moses, took pity on him and wished to take part in his fate. Mariam, who supposedly happened to be in that place, said that she could bring a nurse for the child, and brought her mother. So Moses became the adopted son of Pharaoh's daughter, which saved him from the terrible fate of being thrown into the Nile, and at the same time returned to his mother. Jochebed was the daughter of Levi, the son of the forefather Jacob, and was famous not only for her beauty, but also for her intelligence. Jochebed also had the gift of persuasive speech; when she spoke, everyone agreed with her.

Miriam inherited her mother’s beauty; neither Aaron nor Moses could be called handsome, although they were pleasant in appearance. It was believed that Aaron inherited his mother’s eloquence, but Moses fully inherited her sharpness of mind (although both Aaron and Miriam were also smart). Moses himself believed that his brother was smarter than himself. If only because Aaron knew how to give in where Moses insisted, and often achieved much more with meekness and persuasion than could have been achieved with firmness and coercion. Aaron also had an excellent understanding of people; it seemed that he could read hearts, like an open book. And he was the fairest of all whom Moses knew and reserved in his judgments. Who else could Moses have shared his suspicions with if not Aaron? Take Hoshea, son of Nun from the tribe of Ephraim. He is loyal, reliable, one of those who will never betray, he is smart, but he lacks restraint. This deficiency disappears over the years, as life experience accumulates, but Hosea was not suitable for discussing such a delicate topic as suspicions regarding prominent people in Israel. He will not be able to resist and will certainly begin to denounce someone in public, without yet having good reasons for doing so... Every person is good in his place, and there was no better adviser for Moses than brother Aaron.

The brothers were talking in Moses' tent after evening prayer, when the camp had already begun to fall asleep. Moses placed Eliud at the entrance to the tent, instructing him to answer everyone that Moses was tired and had already gone to bed, and if someone came with a truly important matter, then to let them through. Important matters cannot be delayed.

“I thought about this,” said Aaron, as soon as Moses stated the essence of the matter, “I thought and looked closely at people, sifting them through the sieve of my mind. I proceeded from the fact that this should not be a sent spy posing as a Jew, but a traitor from our people. The fake Jew will very soon be exposed, because not a single tribe, not a single clan will recognize him as their own, and many of our customs are unknown to strangers. In addition, the pharaoh’s man is smart, we have already seen that, and must have certain capabilities. A simple shepherd cannot cope with such a mission...

“What you say is true,” Moses nodded. - This is one of the famous people, or at least one of those close to them. Moreover, he should be well informed about our affairs...

“Exactly,” Aaron agreed. “I sifted through and selected five that I would like to take a closer look at. You probably also have those whom you suspect?

“Yes,” Moses admitted, “only three of them.” Which of us will name names first?

“You have three names, and I have five,” Aaron smiled. - If you don’t have anything against it, then start.

“Okay,” Moses nodded. - But these are just suspicions and assumptions, nothing more... If only you knew, brother, how afraid I am of offending an innocent person with false suspicion!

“For the sake of saving an entire people, you can make even less sacrifices,” Aaron sighed.

“If you push away one faithful one, then you will have no faithful left,” Moses objected. - But let's get back to those I suspect. First of all, this is the doctor Nathan.

Having named the name, Moses fell silent, waiting for what his brother would say.

“He is also among those whom I suspect,” said Aaron. “Nathan was the court physician of the pharaoh and enjoyed his favor. You will now say that you also lived in the palace and were considered the adopted son of the daughter of Ramesses the Second, but you proved your devotion to our people, and Nathan has not yet managed to do this. In addition, while living at the court of Pharaoh, Nathan adhered to Egyptian customs, visited their temples, made friends with the Egyptians and avoided the Jews in every possible way. It's amazing that he didn't shave off his beard and change his name to finally turn into an Egyptian!

“He didn’t shave it, because then everyone would laugh at him - both Jews and Egyptians,” Moses noted. “Nathan is a skilled healer, skilled in his craft, but he is not one of the reliable ones on whom you can rely, and that’s why I suspected him.

“Yes, he is,” Aaron nodded. - Our opinions about him coincide.

“The second is Abner, the son of Ethan,” Moses continued, and from his brother’s glance he realized that Abner seemed suspicious to him too. “He’s very envious, very jealous of other people’s success.” He definitely needs to be the first, he needs to attract everyone's attention, he is used to being admired, and the lack of admiration is perceived as a terrible insult.

“Vainous, envious and not so smart as to become the first among the commanders of the warriors,” Aaron summed up. “But he is ready to do anything to become the first, and if I were Pharaoh, I would certainly turn my attention to Abner.” I think, my brother, that the third name will also be one of those included in my list.

“This is the chief of the scribes, Mordecai,” Moses announced and realized that his brother also suspected Mordecai. “He comes from a wealthy family, but his taste for luxury exceeds his capabilities, and that is why Mordecai has long been stuck in debt. I know that he borrowed large sums from Sidonian [11] moneylenders.

Aaron nodded in understanding. Sidonian moneylenders gave a lot, gave generously, but at huge, unbearable interest rates, and sent murderers-stranglers to insolvent debtors. These murderers strangled their victims with a thin hemp rope, dyed the color of blood, and left it around their necks as a warning to others. That’s why instead of “damn you” they say: “so that you owe the Sidonians!”

“The pharaohs do not know true loyalty, but they are accustomed to the one that is bought and sold,” Moses continued. “There are services for which the pharaoh will agree to pay any price.”

“Especially now,” Aaron said. - Let me name two more names. The first is the treasurer Manasseh...

- Manasseh?! - Moses was surprised, involuntarily raising his voice. - What can you know about Manasseh that I don’t know, and why do you suspect him?!

“Manasseh is a secret voluptuous man,” Aaron shook his head disapprovingly. “I know from faithful people that while living in Egypt, he regularly visited the temple of the horned Hathor[12], the patroness of fornication and the lascivious. Voluptuous people are vulnerable; left without their usual pleasure, they are ready to do anything to find it again. Some priestess experienced in seduction might...

“I understand you,” Moses paused for a moment, thinking about Manasseh, and added: “The treasurer is aware of all our affairs, both present and future.” It is beneficial for Pharaoh to have such a spy.

“Besides, he has our common treasury at hand, from which we can take little by little if necessary, and it will not be immediately noticed,” Aaron added.

Manasseh became treasurer by the general choice of the elders, the leaders of the tribes, and with the approval of Moses. “We trust him,” the elders said. “So be it,” Moses answered, knowing Manasseh as one of the worthy representatives of the tribe of Dan.

“And the fifth and last is Sheba, the son of Jonah, the commander of the soldiers,” Aaron continued.

“Do you suspect him only because Savea’s wife Isis is an Egyptian?!” - Moses frowned, and his voice acquired a sternness that was not so often manifested in conversations with his brother. - Just as you and Mariam reproach me...

- No! - Aaron exclaimed. “Not only for this reason, but also because Savey, so decisive and stern, melts in the presence of his wife and turns into soft wax. I don’t know what, witchcraft or feminine charms, but she bewitched him and took him prisoner. Whatever she says, Savei does. His servants told my son Itamar about this, surprised that a wife could gain such power over her husband, and I learned this from Itamar. And we should not forget that the Isis brothers are among the pharaoh’s close associates. The eldest of them, in charge of collecting taxes throughout Egypt, was awarded an honorary title and called “son of the pharaoh.” Can't the brothers convey the will of Pharaoh to Isis, and she...

- Oh! - Moses sighed and shook his head, making it clear how difficult suspicions were for him.

“Take Nahshon the son of Amminadab,” Aaron began to list, “or Nathanael the son of Zuar, or Eliab the son of Helon, or Hoshea the son of Nun... Whoever their wives were, no matter how much they owed to the moneylenders, no matter how voluptuous they were.” Whatever they were, I will never suspect them of being capable of going against their people, because they are not like that and everyone knows it. I’m ready to give both my hands as a pledge of their loyalty, that’s the kind of people they are. But there are other people, those whose loyalty is not so clearly visible, and if something prompts me to doubt them, then I doubt it. But I tell myself: “When you suspect five, remember that one of them is guilty” - and I don’t rush to conclusions and accusations.

“We need an assistant, someone who will carry out our instructions and watch over those we talked about without attracting attention,” Moses said. “And no one is better suited for this task than Eliud, son of Abdon, who now stands at the entrance to my tent.”

“I wouldn’t like to involve unnecessary people in this matter,” said Aaron. - This is a matter of this nature...

“We will dedicate only one,” answered Moses, “without whom we cannot do.” You and I are always in sight, and everywhere people will pay attention to us. We won't be able to pass between people without being noticed. And no one will pay attention to Eliud. Moreover, he is from a worthy, albeit poor, family. He is smart and brave, as befits a Jew from the tribe of Zebulun, and in addition, he knows how to remain silent about what should be silent. Just today, I once again tested it in action and was pleased.

Moses chose to remain silent about what particular task Eliud was entrusted with today. Why does a brother need to know that he suspected his sons.

“The most important damage caused by a secret enemy is that it deprives people of mutual trust,” Moses thought, “and this is very bad. It’s very scary when trust between people disappears.”

“Besides, you and I look at the world from the height of our position, and sometimes it is very useful to look from below, through the eyes of Eliud,” Moses gave the last argument.

“Have it your way,” Aaron agreed.

Moses shouted to Eliud to come in and said that he wanted to initiate him into one of the most important secrets. Eliud, flattered by such trust, became dignified, straightened his shoulders even wider and swore to remain silent. Then Moses explained to him the essence of the matter and, first of all, instructed him to look after the doctor Nathan. Why exactly after Nathan? You have to start with someone, and besides, of all the five suspects, Nathan seemed the most suspicious to Moses.

Seeing his brother off, Moses left the tent and paused to admire the stars twinkling in the night sky and fully enjoy the coolness of the night. Aaron and Eliud left, Moses was about to return to the tent, when he suddenly saw a tall woman wrapped in a black veil. When the woman approached, he recognized her as his sister and was surprised.

- Peace be with you, Mariam! What need brought you to me at such a late hour?!
