The Lives of St. Abraham the Recluse and Blessed Mary, His Niece

The Monk Abraham the recluse and blessed Mary, his niece, who asceticised in the village of Khidana, near the city of Edessa, were contemporaries and compatriots of the Monk Ephraim the Syrian (January 28), who subsequently wrote about their life.
The Monk Abramius began the difficult feat of living a solitary life in the prime of his years. He left his parents' house and settled in a deserted place, far from worldly temptations, spending his days in unceasing prayer. After the death of his parents, the saint renounced his inheritance and asked his relatives to distribute it to the poor. With his strict ascetic life, meekness and love for mankind, Abramius attracted many to himself who were seeking spiritual light, prayer, and blessing. Soon his faith was seriously tested: he was appointed presbyter to one of the pagan villages of Mesopotamia. For three years, sparing no effort, the monk worked to enlighten the pagans. He destroyed the pagan temple and built God's temple. Humbly enduring insults and even severe beatings from resisting idolaters, he called on the Lord in prayers: “Look, O Master, upon Thy servant, hear my prayer, strengthen me and free Thy servants from the bonds of the devil and grant them to know You, the One True God.” The zealous shepherd was given the happiness of seeing the completion of his righteous labors: the pagans believed in Jesus Christ, the Son of God, and the monk himself baptized them.

Having fulfilled his sacred duty, Abramius again retired to his desert, where he continued to glorify God, fulfilling His holy will. The devil, disgraced by the saint’s exploits, tried to seduce him with the thought of pride. One day at midnight, when Saint Abramius was praying in his cell, a light suddenly shone and the words were heard: “Blessed are you, blessed like no other man!” Having unraveled the enemy’s machinations, the saint said: “I am a sinful man, but I hope for the help and grace of my God and I am not afraid of you.” Another time, the devil appeared before the saint in the form of a young man, lit a candle and began to sing the psalm: “Blessed are the blameless ones who walk in the way in the law of the Lord.” Realizing that this was also a demonic obsession, the elder crossed himself and asked: “If you know that the blessed ones are pure, then why are you bothering them?” The tempter replied: “I annoy them in order to defeat them and turn them away from every good deed.” To this the saint said: “You gain victory over those who have apostatized from God by your own will, but from those who love God you disappear like smoke from the wind.” After these words, the devil disappeared. Thus Saint Abramius defeated the enemy, strengthened by Divine grace. After fifty years of ascetic life, he peacefully departed to the Lord († around 360).

The Monk Mary, the niece of Saint Abraham, grew up edified by his spiritual instructions. But the enemy of the human race managed to seduce her from the true path. In the twenty-seventh year of her life, she left her cell, went to another city and began to live dissolutely. Having learned about this, the Monk Abramius dressed himself in military armor, so as not to be recognized, and went to the city. He found his niece and brought her to repentance. The Monk Maria returned to her cell and spent the rest of her life in prayers and tears of repentance. The Lord honored her with the gift of healing diseases. She died five years after St. Avramius.
