Archim. Eulogius: Russian and Bulgarian monasticism on Mount Athos have been closely linked for centuries

Your Excellency! Dear Mr. Chairman of the People's Assembly of Bulgaria.

It is a great honor and pleasure for us that today the Chairman of the People's Assembly of Bulgaria receives the delegation of Holy Mount Athos, which brought the head of St. Vmch. Panteleimon.

The coming year is an anniversary for Bulgaria, when we celebrate the sacred holiday for our peoples of the end of the Russian-Turkish War of Liberation, which marked the beginning of independent Bulgaria.

It is a great honor for us that the beginning of the celebration of this anniversary, at the request of His Holiness Patriarch Neophytos of Bulgaria, begins with the bringing to Bulgaria of the head of St. Vmch. Panteleimon, the main shrine of our Svyatogorsk monastery.

For the first time in the history of our monastery, we bring the honorable head of the holy great martyr and healer Panteleimon to the Sofia Metropolis of the Bulgarian Orthodox Church.

In the 10th century, the Bulgarian and Russian peoples accepted the Orthodox faith and carefully preserve it in their fraternal Christian relationships: it is known that already in the 15th century there were close friendly relations between the Russian Panteleimon Monastery on Mount Athos and the Rila Monastery in Bulgaria. These relations between the two Slavic monasteries were sealed several times by agreements on fraternal mutual assistance: in 1443 and in 1466. Particularly noteworthy is one of the phrases of the 1466 agreement, which states that “both monasteries are one.” This document turns 550 years old in 2021.

In difficult times, when Russian monks could not come to the Holy Mountain, Bulgarian monks preserved the oldest monastery of our monastery - the monastery of the Virgin Mary Xylurgu, and for about 170 years they supported monastic life, prayer and worship there. It was the Bulgarian monks who built churches in this ancient and most honorable monastery of Athos in honor of Equal-to-the-Apostles Cyril and Methodius - Slovenian teachers and our venerable and God-bearing father John of Rila. The “Mother of God” monastery remains for centuries an eloquent testimony to the joint feat and fraternal spiritual relations of Russian and Bulgarian monks.

For many centuries, the Russian monastery on Mount Athos has had a special close fraternal relationship with the Bulgarian Zograf monastery, which continues to this day.

In Orthodoxy there is no division by nationality, as the Apostle Paul says: “In Christ there is neither Greek nor Jew.” We, Afonites, pray for the whole world - for Russia, for Bulgaria.

On these sacred days, when we remember the feat of Russian and Bulgarian soldiers in the defense of the Shipka Pass, we brought to the Bulgarian Land the greatest shrine of Orthodoxy - the honorable head of the holy great martyr and healer Panteleimon, to express brotherly love for the Orthodox, God-loving people of Bulgaria.

And we believe and hope that the bringing of the relics of St. Vmch. Panteleimon will spiritually strengthen your God-saved country, give Her spiritual support and blessing.

May the healing grace of the great martyr and healer Panteleimon be with all who with faith worship the saints of his multi-healing relics.

God! Save Bulgaria! God! Shut down Bulgaria!

Excerpt characterizing Evlogy (Ivanov)

The French attributed the fire of Moscow to au patriotisme feroce de Rastopchine [to Rastopchin's wild patriotism]; Russians – to the fanaticism of the French. In essence, there were no reasons for the fire of Moscow in the sense of attributing this fire to the responsibility of one or several persons. Moscow burned down due to the fact that it was placed in such conditions under which every wooden city should burn down, regardless of whether the city had one hundred and thirty bad fire pipes or not. Moscow had to burn due to the fact that the inhabitants left it, and just as inevitably as a heap of shavings should catch fire, on which sparks of fire would rain down for several days. A wooden city, in which there are fires almost every day in the summer under the residents, house owners and under the police, cannot help but burn down when there are no inhabitants in it, but live troops smoking pipes, making fires on Senate Square from Senate chairs and cooking themselves two once a day. In peacetime, as soon as troops settle into quarters in villages in a certain area, the number of fires in this area immediately increases. To what extent should the probability of fires increase in an empty wooden city in which an alien army is stationed? Le patriotisme feroce de Rastopchine and the fanaticism of the French are not to blame for anything here. Moscow caught fire from pipes, from kitchens, from fires, from the sloppiness of enemy soldiers and residents - not the owners of the houses. If there were arson (which is very doubtful, because there was no reason for anyone to set fire, and, in any case, it was troublesome and dangerous), then the arson cannot be taken as the cause, since without the arson it would have been the same. No matter how flattering it was for the French to blame the atrocity of Rostopchin and for the Russians to blame the villain Bonaparte or then to place the heroic torch in the hands of their people, one cannot help but see that there could not have been such a direct cause of the fire, because Moscow had to burn, just as every village and factory had to burn , every house from which the owners will come out and into which strangers will be allowed to run the house and cook their own porridge. Moscow was burned by its inhabitants, it’s true; but not by those residents who remained in it, but by those who left it. Moscow, occupied by the enemy, did not remain intact, like Berlin, Vienna and other cities, only due to the fact that its inhabitants did not offer bread, salt and keys to the French, but left it. The influx of Frenchmen, spreading like a star across Moscow on the day of September 2, reached the block in which Pierre now lived only in the evening. After the last two days, spent alone and unusually, Pierre was in a state close to madness. His whole being was taken over by one persistent thought. He himself did not know how and when, but this thought now took possession of him so that he did not remember anything from the past, did not understand anything from the present; and everything that he saw and heard happened before him as in a dream.

The OCU delegations were not happy on Mount Athos

Archimandrite Evlogiy (Ivanov) , abbot of the St. Panteleimon Monastery on Mount Athos, did not allow the bishop of the newly created Ukrainian church, Pavel Yuristy, into the Russian monastery on the Holy Mountain .

The abbot closed the monastery gates in front of “representatives of Ukrainian schismatics, did not allow them to enter the temple and venerate the relics, explaining that they were not recognized in this monastery and did not plan to do so in the future.”

Only 5 out of 20 Athonite monasteries came out in support of the OCU.

Five Mount Athos monasteries, Xenophon, Kutlumush, Iveron, Pantokrator and Stavronikita , supported the decision of the Ecumenical Patriarchate to grant the tomos to the OCU . Today in one of them, in Pantokrator, representatives of the OCU celebrated the liturgy for the first time, Sergei Shumilo, director of the International Institute of Athos Heritage - MIAS, reported this on his Facebook page.

In Athos there is no monostasis similar to Ukrainian church meals.
It’s hard for me to recapture the fragments again... Posted by Serhiy Shumylo on Friday, February 8, 2019

Sergei Shumilo reports that now each of the monasteries privately decides for itself whether to allow representatives of the OCU to worship or not. One of these days the next meeting of St. Kinot will take place, which will again consider this issue. Some Athonite monks have expressed fears that this issue could cause a split between the Athonite monastery. Such cases sometimes happened in the history of Athos, in particular, there were monasteries that temporarily adhered to the Union of Florence, or, for example, opposed the hesychast movement “kolivadiv”...

Such splits between monasteries always caused a crisis. Now it is too early to talk about a split on Mount Athos. In addition to the pros and cons, a significant part of the monasteries are determined to maintain a position of neutrality and non-interference in this issue, waiting for the Patriarchs and Primates of the Local Orthodox Churches to come to an agreement on it. Probably, for now, different positions among different monasteries will remain in the future...

Seven monks of the Athos monastery of Vatopedi left it and moved to the Russian St. Panteleimon Monastery after the leadership of Vatopedi received the bishop of the “new church of Ukraine” Pavel Yuristy. Interfax reported this on February 10, citing its own sources.

According to the agency’s interlocutor, Russian, Ukrainian and Moldavian inhabitants decided to take this step. At the same time, he noted that among ethnic Greeks there are also many opponents of the created structure. “At the same time, today four Athonite monasteries - Xenophon, Pantokrator, New Esphigmen and Vatopedi - have entered into communion with Ukrainian self-saints,” the source concluded.

In turn, the rector of the Moscow Theological Academy, Archbishop Ambrose, said that, according to his information, the Patriarch of Constantinople ordered that a delegation of the new church visit all the monasteries of the Holy Mountain.

“Before our eyes, one after another, Athonite monasteries unite with schismatics and commit an unthinkable betrayal of Orthodox people in Ukraine, who are persecuted, blackmailed, beaten, expelled from their native churches (...) How subtly the enemy of the human race mocks people!” — writes the rector of the academy in his telegram channel.

***

Let us recall that at the end of January, 15 out of 20 monasteries of Athos voted against participation in the enthronement of the head of the so-called OCU Epiphanius . And the monasteries of Philotheus and Karakal announced that they would close their gates to Epiphanius. Individual Athos monasteries, both Greek and Slavic, stated that they recognize the only canonical primate of the Orthodox Church of Ukraine, Metropolitan Onuphry, who has long been known on Athos.

Among other things, in addition to the above-mentioned Greek monasteries of Philotheus and Caracal, his support to Met. Onuphrius is expressed in the Bulgarian monastery Zograf and the Serbian monstiri Hilandar.

Those who do not support the initiatives of the Patriarch of Constantinople explain their position by the fact that the tomos of autocephaly was not granted to the entirety of the Ukrainian Church, but only to a smaller part, while the majority does not participate in this. In addition, the Athonite monks are concerned about the fact that the tomos was given to what they consider to be a “schismatic branch,” in which they understand the UOC-KP.
