Former Metropolitan of Vladimir and Suzdal Evlogy reposed

Estimated reading time: less than a minute.

On the night of July 23, 2021, at the age of 84, the former Metropolitan of Vladimir and Suzdal Evlogiy (Smirnov) , who had been in retirement since December 2021, reposed in the Lord.

Bishop Evlogy died in the Alekseevskaya hospital in Moscow “after an illness associated with advanced age,” reports the website of the Vladimir diocese.

The funeral service for the Metropolitan will take place in the Assumption Cathedral of Vladimir on Saturday, July 25 at 11:00.

Metropolitan Evlogy (in the world Yuri Vasilyevich Smirnov ) was born on January 13, 1937 in Kemerovo. In his large Christian family there were seven sons and three daughters, for which the bishop’s mother, Natalya Petrovna Smirnova , was awarded the title “Mother Heroine”.

In 1955, after graduating from junior high school, Yuri entered the Moscow Theological Seminary, where, at the beginning of his studies, he began to carry out church obedience to subdeacon Patriarch Alexy I.

In the spring of 1960, Yuri Smirnov was admitted to the Trinity-Sergius Lavra, and in the fall of the same year he was drafted into the army, where he served for more than 3 years in Vyborg.

With the blessing of Patriarch Alexy I, on March 15, 1965, Yuri was tonsured a monk with the name Eulogius, in honor of the martyr Eulogius of Palestine . On March 21, 1965, Monk Eulogius was ordained as hierodeacon.

In 1966, the future bishop graduated from the Moscow Theological Academy with a candidate's degree in theology. As a professorial fellow, he remained at the department of homiletics, and also performed various obediences at the Trinity-Sergius Lavra and taught church canonical disciplines at the theological seminary. In 1967 he was ordained a hieromonk.

From 1972 to 1983, hegumen, and later Archimandrite Eulogius, served as the economist of the united economy of the Lavra and the Academy, where he taught Liturgics, Comparative and Pastoral Theology, and since 1978 he headed the department of history of the Balkan Churches with the award of the title of professor of church history.

In May 1983, Archimandrite Eulogius became the first abbot of the revived St. Daniel Monastery. In this monastery, the future ruler restored churches from ruins, created the spiritual and administrative center of the Russian Orthodox Church and resumed the veneration of the holy noble prince Daniel of Moscow .

Since 1986, Archimandrite Evlogy became the first vice-rector of the Moscow Theological Academy and Seminary, professor of the department of pastoral theology.

In August 1988, with the blessing of Patriarch Pimen , Archimandrite Evlogy was appointed vicar of the Holy Vvedenskaya Optina Hermitage, leaving the post of vicar of the St. Daniel Monastery.

From November 1990 to December 2021, Bishop Evlogy headed the Vladimir See. For his hard work, he was elevated to archbishop in 1995, and to metropolitan in 2013.

For the totality of his theological, preaching and peacemaking works, Metropolitan Evlogy was awarded many church orders, medals and certificates.

In December 2021, by the decision of the Holy Synod, Bishop Evlogii was retired with gratitude “for his archpastoral care for many years of the Vladimir diocese, which contributed to the comprehensive development of church life - increasing the number of parishes and the number of clergy, opening monasteries and theological schools, conducting a constructive dialogue with local authorities and public associations, as well as for his activities as the head of the Vladimir Metropolis.”

Metropolitan Manuel (Lemeshevsky)

While abroad he was widely and generously favored by the “powers of this world”; his authority in heterodox circles was exceptional. But all his life he invariably strove for the “simple man,” and the simpler the person was, the freer he felt with him. One noticed in him an innocence that bordered on naivety, an unpretentiousness. He did not notice the taste and quality of food, although he was completely alien to asceticism, his “metropolitan chambers” were more modest than a guardhouse in another church, and his favorite vestments were made of rough, harsh canvas. He loved children and became equal to them in their society. In recent months, when he no longer received almost anyone, the children invariably had access to him.

At the same time, behind his outward simplicity he was educated, inquisitive and liberal. The first allowed radio broadcasts of church services. He said: “ Once upon a time they fought against electricity. But in fact, every power that is useful to man and improves man comes from God

". He knew secular literature very well and followed it. He invariably admired Pushkin, in whom he discovered more and more new treasures, and loved Tolstoy, Melnikov-Pechersky, Leskov.

I couldn't stand flattery. He was alien to the lust for power, but by nature he was powerful.

In conversations he liked to remember his seminary times and his poor youth, to talk about his young meetings with the most prominent later church hierarchs of his generation, about the State Duma and about his work in the Kholm region. He did not refuse a glass of vodka, but he preferred rowan, which he called “the priest’s drink” and “drozdovka” - because blackbirds peck at rowan and because the stern Metropolitan Filaret (Drozdov) could not stand alcohol. According to Russian custom, he loved gifts, but he gave them generously himself, and he lovingly composed Easter and New Year’s parcels for Russian tuberculosis patients himself. He was unusually kind, disinterested, widely generous, attentive to his interlocutor, loved to make peace, and especially to marry. Even though he was busy with complex, heavy and extensive administrative work, he was always and invariably filled with “spiritual joy.”
