Spaso-Preobrazhensky Cathedral
- an Orthodox cathedral in Khabarovsk, built on the steep bank of the Amur in 2001-2004. According to a number of sources, it is the third tallest temple in Russia after the Cathedral of Christ the Savior in Moscow and St. Isaac's Cathedral in St. Petersburg, as well as the tallest building in Khabarovsk.
History of the temple
The cathedral was built on Glory Square. It can be seen from almost all points of the city. The construction of the cathedral took place from 2001 to 2004. Construction began only when, in 2001, Patriarch Alexei II blessed the construction of the temple.
At the time of construction it was one of the tallest buildings in the city. Funds for materials and labor for construction were received from philanthropists of the Khabarovsk Territory: residents of Khabarovsk, organizations and enterprises.
Construction was completed in 2003 on October 16th. On this day, Mark of the Amur and the Bishop of Khabarovsk served a festive service in honor of the completion of construction. The temple was opened to the public only in 2004, after its consecration.
The upper church was consecrated in the name of the Transfiguration of the Lord, the lower church was consecrated in honor of the Apostle Mark.
Why is the cathedral called that?
The cathedral is named after the Transfiguration of the Lord - the episode described in the New Testament when Christ, in front of the eyes of his three disciples, was illuminated by an angelic light. At the same moment, Moses and Elijah appeared - two Old Testament prophets who predicted the coming of the mission.
“After six days Jesus took Peter, James and John and led them alone up to a high mountain and was transfigured before them. His clothes became shining, very white, like snow... And Elijah appeared to them with Moses; and they talked with Jesus” [Mark 9:2-4].
Spaso-Preobrazhensky Cathedral today.
The cathedral is currently in need of major renovation. According to experts, this happened because the construction of the temple was carried out in too short a time, in violation of construction technology.
After construction, it was discovered that the upper platform, called the walkway, was not built according to the building design. Therefore, when it rained, water flowed along the walls of the temple; in winter it froze, and in the spring, after a thaw, a leak formed, which destroyed the columns of the temple.
The temple is open to the public, but is closed for work every year at certain periods of time. Before visiting, you should visit the temple website to find out information about the work.
The cathedral can be visited daily from 7:40 am to 9:00 pm.
Clergy
The clergy is a group of professional ministers of the church. The clergy is divided into white clergy (persons who got married) and black clergy (persons who took monasticism).

Majestic cathedrals of Khabarovsk
Walking in the center of Khabarovsk, it is impossible to pass by two magnificent Orthodox churches - the Spaso-Preobrazhensky Cathedral and the City-Khabarovsk Assumption Cathedral. The majestic structures stand close to the Amur River and dominate the surrounding area.
Naturally, I couldn’t help but capture such beauty. I took information about these temples from Wikipedia.
I’ll start the story with a description of the Transfiguration Cathedral.
The Spaso-Preobrazhensky Cathedral was erected on the steep bank of the Amur in 2001-2004. According to a number of sources, it is the third tallest temple in Russia after the Cathedral of Christ the Savior in Moscow and St. Isaac's Cathedral in St. Petersburg. With a height of 96 meters, the Transfiguration Cathedral is seven meters inferior to the Cathedral of Christ the Savior.
The construction of the cathedral in Khabarovsk was blessed by Patriarch of Moscow and All Rus' Alexy II. The first stone for the foundation of the temple was laid in 2001. On October 16, 2003, Bishop Mark of Khabarovsk and Amur region served a thanksgiving prayer service upon completion of construction.
The golden-domed cathedral with five domes was built with donations from residents of the region, sponsorship funds from enterprises and organizations.
The frescoes inside the temple (on the dome of the Savior Pantocrator and the Apostles) were made by a group of Moscow artists, specially invited to Khabarovsk for this occasion by Bishop Mark of Khabarovsk and Amur.
The Transfiguration Cathedral is able to simultaneously accommodate three thousand parishioners.
The cathedral has two separate chapels, the main one, with the central entrance, and the small one (lower church), located under the main one.
The cathedral is located on the Square of Glory, built on the occasion of the 30th anniversary of the end of the Great Patriotic War and opened on May 9, 1975.
A pylon and an extended wall with reliefs of the eight highest Soviet orders were built in the center of the square. The names of Heroes of the Soviet Union, Heroes of Socialist Labor, full holders of the Orders of Glory and Labor Glory were carved on the pylon.
Here, next to the cathedral, is the Khabarovsk Theological Seminary. In the photo she is on the left.
On the other side of the cathedral stands the building of the state television and radio station.
From the side of the cathedral there is a very beautiful view of the Amur.
This photo was taken from the observation deck located on the side of the building overlooking the river.
And in this place, between the cathedral and the river bank, it is planned to build a residential complex. The Khabarovsk diocese of the Russian Orthodox Church - the clergy and parishioners - actively oppose this. You can find out more about this in the material posted in the parish magazine of the Transfiguration Cathedral.
Architecture of the cathedral in Khabarovsk
The Transfiguration Cathedral consists of 2 parts. The main or upper temple is mainly intended for parishioners; it is in the main temple that the main entrance is located. The second part of the cathedral is the secondary or lower church, for more personal meetings, for example, for catechetical conversations with the priest before baptism. In winter, the Khabarovsk font is located in the lower church.
The temple has 5 domes with crosses. The domes are gilded. The height of the temple is 95 meters, counting from the ground to the largest dome with a cross. The project was developed by Yuri Zhivetev, Evgeniy Semenov and Nikolai Prokudin.
The temple is painted in light blue tones, and inside the cathedral the walls are decorated with frescoes depicting scenes from the Bible. The dome of the cathedral depicts the apostles and the Pantocrator. Artists were invited from Moscow to paint the frescoes.
The main hall can accommodate up to 2000 parishioners, and the lower hall 1500.
Historical information
The golden domes of the Transfiguration Church in Khabarovsk can be seen both from an airplane and when approaching the city by train and car. The height of the Khabarovsk shrine has become the pride of designers, builders and simply townspeople, because with crosses it reaches 93 meters; higher than this church can be called the Moscow Cathedral of Christ the Savior and St. Petersburg St. Isaac's Cathedral.
Spaso-Preobrazhensky Cathedral in Khabarovsk
The laying of the first stone in the foundation of the future temple complex marked the beginning of the third millennium. Patriarch of Moscow and All Rus' Alexy II himself blessed this construction.
Nowadays, several thousand townspeople and residents of the surrounding area flock to large-scale services. The ringing of bells can be heard far beyond the surrounding area. At the same time, the Holy Transfiguration Cathedral can accommodate up to 5,000 parishioners.
The main Orthodox church of Khabarovsk with golden domes and chiming bells, towering on the banks of the Amur, was built with donations from patrons and city residents.
According to the plans of the architects E. Semenov, N. Prokudin, Yu. Zhivetyev, the cathedral consists of two chapels, one of which is the main one with a central entrance, and the other is small.
With the blessing of Bishop Mark of Khabarovsk and Amur, artists from Moscow were invited to paint the interior walls of the Transfiguration Church, who depicted not only icons and saints on the walls, but also paintings from the Bible.
The upper church was consecrated in honor of one of the main Christian holidays - the Transfiguration of the Lord, the lower church was built in honor of the Apostle Mark, the author of one of the four Gospels.
On a note! The name of the Holy Transfiguration Cathedral was given by the Patriarch of Moscow and All Rus' Alexy II himself, the Transfiguration, as a symbol of the transformation of the Russian lands, of all Russia.
The first divine prayer of thanksgiving was served on October 16, 2003 by Bishop Mark of Khabarovsk. The consecration took place in 2004.

Parish services
There are 8 parish services in the Spaso-Preobrazhensky Cathedral in Khabarovsk:
- "Mercy"
People who are in the service help lonely or infirm people. Most often these are old people who are not visited by their children and grandchildren. Participants in the service can help: clean up, buy groceries and prepare lunch, visit or go to church together.
- "Prayer"
The group is led by Ekaterina Mokeeva. In addition to her, the group includes 11 more people. The group was created to help everyone who is in a difficult life situation and wants to find a way out of it.
People put notes with their troubles written on them in special boxes. Then the participants in this service provide prayerful assistance to these people.
- "Doctor"
In the temple there is a cell in which notes with requests for help and offers of assistance are placed. Later, the Community Elder reviews the notes and decides what to do in a particular situation, then he makes a call to the doctor.
The services are closely linked, so the Senior Minister can call the Prayer service and ask for prayer for health. If fundraising is required, for example, for an expensive operation abroad, medical documents must be provided.
- "Law"
Legal assistance service. You can consult with a lawyer or social worker at the temple. The professionals who provide services in the temple are ordinary parishioners of the church and help at their own request to visitors who need their help.
- "Enlightener"
With the blessing of Archpriest Sergei Sivkov, the service began its work. The service helps baptized people, but not attending church, to join the church, or, conversely, unbaptized people, but striving to join the church.
Often parishioners turn to the cleaning lady or distributor at the icon shop for information. The service was created to help people find their way around the temple, find out the schedule of services or other background information.
The service runs after the late Liturgy from 12:00 to 16:00 in the evening, located in the upper church.
- "Auto Help"
The service began operating in 2012. The service helps people who have difficulty walking or need to travel very long distances. Basically, people who need help from this group are the infirm, disabled or elderly. Participants in this group will give you a ride to the hospital, temple, pension fund or other places, and then back.
- "Svetelka"
Social service for the benefit of decorating the temple. The majority of the group is women. They help the temple look neat and beautiful.
- "Mite"
This service collects and redirects donations to other services provided by the temple.
Also, separate from the services, there is a youth club “Preobrazhentsy”, which is engaged in education and charity.
Archbishop Innocent
For his feat of apostleship, Metropolitan Innocent of Moscow and Kolomna was canonized. In 1823, then Father John left for the distant Aleutian Islands to preach the Word of God, taking with him his old mother, wife and one-year-old son.
Many natives who lived on the island of Unalaska subsequently converted to Christianity. The natives, who had no experience in construction, were poor helpers for Father John in the construction of the first church on the island, but with God’s help and patience the temple was built.
The simplicity and accessibility of the Russian priest's sermons attracted large numbers of people, establishing a trusting relationship between the holy father and his flock. Neither cold nor bad weather could stop the holy father from sailing to the islands. While visiting the population on the American mainland, the priest baptized from thirty to two hundred people in one service.
The Russian priest taught children to read and write, translated the New Testament into the Aleutian language, after which he was transferred to North America, the island of Sithu, where he preached to the Koloshes. Deep love for the natives forced Father John to go to St. Petersburg and Moscow and ask the Synod and the Patriarch for the blessing of printing books for the indigenous population of the islands.
After the death of his wife, John was tonsured with the name Innocent, he was elevated to the rank of archimandrite, and after meeting with Tsar Nicholas the First, he was appointed bishop of the Aleutian Islands.
Bishop Innocent contributed to the construction of new churches, schools for children, Sunday schools for adults, his missionary work culminated in the adoption of Christianity on the islands.
Saint Innocent, Metropolitan of Moscow
Since 1850, Archbishop Innokenty has been preaching to the Yakuts and Tungus, who had never seen a single archpastor before; his missionary work extends to China.
After the death of Metropolitan Philaret of Moscow, it was decided to appoint Archbishop Innocent in his place. Metropolitan Innocent of Moscow carried out his service in obedience, humility and patience, despite his advanced years and illnesses; in 1879 he departed to God.
Important! In 1974, by the decision of the Holy Synod of the Orthodox Church of America, Patriarch Innocent was canonized for his apostolic feat.
Coming to the particles of the relics of Saint Innocent, parishioners ask for help and blessings in strengthening their faith.

Khabarovsk font
Washing in the font takes place on the feast of baptism. The tradition arose because Jesus Christ, on the day of his Baptism, plunged into the Jordan River to wash himself and be baptized. Many believe that the water in the font has healing properties, and ablution contributes to this.
Every year on this day, residents of Khabarovsk plunge into the font. Many people bring their children to teach them a healthy lifestyle and improve their health from childhood.
You can take a dip in the Khabarovsk font every year on November 19th. The font will be dug in the open air, that is, on the Amur River. Also in the lower church there will be an open font, along the lane. Turgenev (lower parking lot of the temple) from 12:00 to 21:00.
