Story
On the road to the Trinity-Sergius Lavra, known to many believers - a place of pilgrimage to the relics of St. Sergius of Radonezh, a temple of the Tikhvin Icon of the Mother of God appeared. This place has always been special, and the road leading to the temple is paved, because in order to touch the holy relics, both commoners and nobles, even the tsar himself, almost always went on a three-day journey on foot, accompanied by thoughts and prayers.
The Tikhvin Church took 7 years to build and was solemnly consecrated in the fall of 1860. According to one version, it was then, at the consecration of the temple, that the king presented the miraculous icon of the Tikhvin Mother of God.
The history of this church includes many miracles associated both with the building itself and with its main shrine - the Tikhvin Icon. For example, it is known that before the icon was transferred to this temple, it was in the Assumption Cathedral, which burned three times, but the icon was never damaged in the fire.
The miraculous Tikhvin Icon of the Mother of God
In Soviet times, when Christianity collapsed, the expensive decoration of the Tikhvin Cathedral was badly damaged, however, the gilded bells remained intact, although they fell silent for a long time.
Interesting! One of the legends associated with the miraculous icon tells how at the very beginning of the Great Patriotic War, when German troops were advancing on the Soviet Union, Stalin ordered to take the Tikhvin icon and fly around the city on an airplane with it. It was then that the Red Army managed to carry out a successful offensive and take the city of Tikhvin.
Appearance
On the road to the place of veneration of the relics of the great Sergius of Radonezh - the Holy Trinity Lavra of St. Sergius, there is the Church of the Icon of the Mother of God "Tikhvin".
Christians traveled on foot along the Trinity Road, as the street leading to the church was called since ancient times. The journey took several days: this time was enough to think about your life, reflect on your sins, and prepare for the holy sacraments. Even royalty refused to use a carriage and preferred to walk in order to get away from the bustle of the world for a while and be alone with their thoughts.

The emergence of the Tikhvin Church in Alekseevsky dates back to the seventeenth century. Then the village passed into possession from one noble prince to another. So, after the liberation of the territory from the Poles, it was presented to Dmitry Trubetskoy for special services to the Motherland. Until 1655, the prince's widow controlled the property near Moscow.
Then the family provided it to Tsar Alexei Mikhailovich so that he could settle here. By his benevolence and with God's help, a temple was built here in honor of the man of God Alexy, and the settlement began to be called Alekseevsky. After some time, a new one was built next to the old building - the Church of the Tikhvin Icon, both buildings were connected.

The official website testifies that the Temple in Alekseevskoye, during its consecration, received from the patriarch its main shrine - the miraculous image of the Mother of God.
This happened on October 31, 1680. The temple in Moscow went through difficult times, the invasion of the French, who settled in it, desecrated it and turned it into a warehouse for storing provisions and a stable.
Only after 1824, Alexander the First allocated significant funds from the treasury for restoration, the walls were painted, and new chapels were built.
After the forties, the Church of the Tikhvin Icon in Alekseevsky was partially dismantled, but was not closed either during the persecution of the church or after the construction of Stalin’s buildings began. In the early eighties, restoration work was undertaken: under a layer of notes on the walls, beautiful paintings were discovered, believed to belong to the brilliant painter D. Scotti. The shrine was revered by our predecessors, and it is still valued today. Every year since the middle of the last century the Patriarch visits it to celebrate the Divine Liturgy.

Description
The five-domed church of the icon of Our Lady of Tikhvin amazes, first of all, with its size, strong and durable brickwork, but at the same time, thanks to the “Russian patterned” style, with intricate decor, complex pictorial compositions, it does not give the impression of a bulky fortress. Multiple windows of the temple, made in the Byzantine style, cut through the walls almost from floor to ceiling.
Interior of the Church of the Tikhvin Icon of the Mother of God
The interior decoration of the temple is also striking in its splendor. And first of all, of course, it should be said about the heart of the cathedral - its altar. It is made atypically tall and large, but the main wonder is not this, but the fact that during the morning service the light, passing through numerous arches of windows, falls in three golden streams onto the altar, as if symbolizing the Trinity revered by all Christians - Father, Son and the Holy Spirit.
Unfortunately, the walls of the cathedral did not preserve all the frescoes in their original form, but the hands of the most talented painters, with the blessing of the priest, decorated the walls of the temple with well-known scenes from the Old and New Testaments, as well as paintings of the lives of Saints Sergius of Radonezh and Nicholas the Wonderworker.
In the temple, the prayer rooms of the king and queen have survived to this day. The unique round tiled stove made by Russian stove-makers of the 17th century gives the royal room a special value.
The bell tower, built at the beginning of the 19th century, conveys the typical decoration of the interior church chambers of this period.
Important! You can get acquainted with the exterior and decoration of the temple by ordering an excursion program, but please note that on days of strict fasting there are no excursions.
Miracles associated with the Temple of the Tikhvin Icon
Miracles concern the icon itself, which has miraculous energy. However, this place also stores other valuables with good qualities. The icon of the Kazan Mother of God more than once performed miracles that were possible only with unshakable faith in the powers of heaven. There is a known case in history when it was the Mother of God from the Kazan icon who made a blind baby, found in her mother’s arms, sighted. After long, diligent maternal prayers, the Mother of God took pity on hearing the call.
The icon of the Mother of God, according to legend, was painted by Luke himself from life, during the life of the Mother of God. The miracles associated with her tell that she traveled to different places and cities, disappearing and appearing wherever she pleased. So, once in the village of Tikhvin, she disappeared for several years, and then the villagers discovered the find in a well.
There is no confirmation or refutation of this. Christians believe in a miracle that can happen according to the will of the Mother of God.
Activities of the parish
The parish of the Church of Our Lady of Tikhvin carries out active social work. Thus, the temple servants developed the “Common Cause” project, aimed at reviving the wooden temple architecture of the Russian North.

Patronal holidays
Every year on July 9th the patronal feast day of the Tikhvin parish is celebrated. On this day, in simple words, the birthday of the church in Alekseevskoye and the day of veneration of the Tikhvin Mother of God icon are celebrated. According to tradition, the holiday begins with the Liturgy and several sermons. The service ends with a religious procession with the icon of the Tikhvin Mother of God and spiritual singing, however, the holiday does not end there.
Patronal feast day of the Church of the Tikhvin Icon of the Mother of God in Alekseevsky
In the courtyard of the temple, ministers arrange a common lunch for all parishioners, during which you can enjoy the taste of simple Russian dishes and share with all the diners the joy that fills the heart of everyone who came that day to listen to the priest’s instructions, or simply to pray at the holy icon.
Architectural style of the temple
The temple is made in the traditional Russian style of the 17th century - Russian patterning. It is a five-domed structure with enlarged shapes, which allows it to accommodate up to three thousand people during church services. The temple is interesting for its abundance of decor, as well as its incredible picturesque silhouette, which adds complexity to the entire composition. The unique idea of framing the heads of the temple with rows of kokoshniks is the merit of the architects of the time of Alexei Mikhailovich.
It was that era that became the ancestor of Russian pattern making. The temple is equipped with prayer rooms for the royal guests, hidden from the eyes of visitors. The icon of the Tikhvin Mother of God is located in the center of the iconostasis under glass protection. The most unique components of the temple are the cross with particles of the relics of St. Nicholas the Wonderworker, as well as a life-size copy of the Cave of the Holy Sepulcher, recreated according to information from religious sources.
During the years of Soviet power, the Church of the Tikhvin Icon of the Mother of God in Alekseevsky was never closed
In Soviet times, despite the fact that there was persecution of Orthodoxy in the country, the temple was never closed. This is due to the historical value that it represents.
In addition, the unique architecture of the church adorned the view of the capital, which served as additional “protection” for it.
A fragment of the fence of the Church of the Icon of the Mother of God of Tikhvin in Alekseevsky, Moscow. During all the years of Soviet power, the temple was not closed. Moreover, it was built and decorated, so at the beginning of the 20th century a parable house and a church fence were built
Church life was carried on in the temple all the time, and it was even expanded and decorated. So in November 1917, in symmetry with the Alekseevsky chapel, under the northern end of the temple, the chapel of the martyr Tryphon was created. In 1922, the Church of the Resurrection of the Word was built in the basement of the temple.
The iconostasis for it was taken from the house church of one of the Muscovites; the name was chosen in memory of the Church of the Resurrection in Rostokin, which existed in the 16th - 18th centuries. In addition, a parable house and church fence were built at the beginning of the 20th century.
The Soviet authorities were unable to close the Church of the Tikhvin Icon of the Mother of God in Alekseevsky.
Despite the fact that, by God’s Will, the Soviet authorities did not close the temple, on April 23, 1922, they removed 6 pounds 32 pounds 95 spools of silver (114 kg) and 58 diamonds from it. Valuables were recovered from church utensils and liturgical objects.
In addition, the lower church was also taken away from the parish in order to set up a vegetable base in it. Later, the workshops of the Sofrino Art and Production Enterprise were located here, which were located there until 1998.
Church of the Icon of the Mother of God of Tikhvin in Alekseevsky, Moscow. 1974-1976. Despite the fact that the authorities did not close the temple, they did not provide him with any assistance. So there was a ban on bell ringing, and the trees growing next to it were not pruned
It is worth noting that the bells were never removed from the bell tower, but they did not ring for a long time. The area around the church was left without maintenance, and overgrown trees hid it from view.
God's Providence can also be seen in the fact that the temple miraculously survived during the great Stalinist construction of VDNKh. The fact is that the authorities could consider that it spoils the view of VDNKh and decide to demolish it. Fortunately, this did not happen.
The Temple of the Tikhvin Icon of the Mother of God was built in the favorite palace village of Tsar Alexei Mikhailovich
The Church of the Tikhvin Icon of the Mother of God was erected in the village of Alekseevskoye. This village was once considered the favorite palace village of Tsar Alexei Mikhailovich. It is located on the ancient Trinity Road leading to the Trinity-Sergius Lavra.
It was along this route that Russian people left Moscow to venerate the relics of the great Russian saint, St. Sergius of Radonezh. Usually such a pilgrimage was made on foot, and kings were no exception.

Previously, on the site of the village of Alekseevskoye there was another village, Kopytovo, which received its name from the nearby Kopytovka River, a tributary of the Yauza. The first owner of the village was D.M. Cheremisinov.
In 1621, the village was granted to Prince D.T. Trubetskoy, for the fact that his Cossacks provided decisive assistance to the militia of Minin and Pozharsky during the liberation of Moscow from the Poles during the Time of Troubles.
1665
this year the heirs of A.V. Trubetskoy gave the village of Kopytovka to Tsar Alexei Mikhailovich
The road to the Trinity-Sergius Lavra took 3-4 days. The first stop on the way to the Lavra was considered to be a stop in Kopytovka. Until 1665, the village was owned by the widow of Prince Trubetskoy, Anna Vasilievna.
After she died, the heirs handed it over to Tsar Alexei Mikhailovich, who liked this area for hunting.

In 1640, the king ordered the construction of his travel palace in the village. Here he stopped on the way to the Trinity Sergius Lavra or while hunting in Sokolniki.
And in 1646 - 1648 The last owner of the village, Anna Vasilievna Trubetskaya, built a church in honor of Alexy, the Man of God, the Tsar’s heavenly patron.
After this event in 1647, the village began to be called Alekseevsky.
