Church of the Apostle Andrew the First-Called

- an Orthodox church in honor of the Apostle Andrew the First-Called in Voronezh. Construction of the temple began in March 2000 according to the design of architect V.P. Shevelev in the Russian-Byzantine style with elements of Peter the Great's Baroque.

History[edit]

In 2005, several joyful events occurred for the small community of St. Andrew's Church. On February 15, the day of the celebration of the Presentation of the Lord, parishioners gathered in the church yard to watch and be the first to hear the solemn ringing of the bells raised that day to the church bell tower. The bells were cast in Voronezh, their total weight is about 700 kg. On the bright holiday of Easter in the same year 2005, believers entered the church under construction for the first time (before this, services were held in a construction trailer adapted for church services).

The consecration of St. Andrew's Church took place on November 22, 2009 by His Eminence Sergius, Metropolitan of Voronezh and Borisoglebsk.

The Church of St. Andrew the First-Called has truly become a decoration of the Kominternovsky district of Voronezh. The cityscape with a series of dull, monotonous high-rise buildings is not pleasing to the eye, and true relaxation and joy is the church building, built in the Russian-Byzantine style with elements of Peter the Great's Baroque. At an altitude of 26 meters, golden domes sparkle with sunlight, and from the bell tower, which is slightly higher, bells ring out and call believers to prayer.

Neo-Russian architecture, what is its essence

The neo-Russian style in architecture arose at the beginning of the 20th century. Its features were a combination of motifs of Russian architecture and Byzantine culture.

Attention! In contrast to the Russian style, the new direction in architecture is distinguished by its subtle and creative stylization, which excludes exact copying.

The neo-Russian style is characterized by plasticity, bright decorativeness; it combined in construction the unique forms of Kyiv, Pskov, Vladimir baroque and folk wooden architecture.

The Russian-Byzantine style of construction, custom-cast bells, and the presence of holy images made the Church of St. Apostle Andrew the First-Called a city landmark.

Architect V. Shevelev managed to create a masterpiece that grew up on a local wasteland in what was once a dull area.

History of the creation of the temple

The Church of St. Andrew the First-Called began to be built in Voronezh in 2000 on a vacant lot, which was located among residential buildings in the Kominternovsky district. Its creator was the architect V.P. Shepelev, who, when developing the design of the religious building, relied on the unique neo-Russian style, which is characterized by a combination of elements of Russian architecture and the ancient traditions of Byzantine culture. This style direction arose at the beginning of the 20th century. Additionally, when creating the project, elements of Peter the Great's Baroque art were used.

As a result of the original approach, the architect managed to create a building on a cruciform foundation, which is characterized by a pronounced decorative effect and a soft transition of forms. The temple has become a magnificent decoration of a residential urban area, the residential buildings of which are not particularly original.

Temple building construction process

For the first time, the doors of the temple opened for believers in 2005 on Easter, but only 4 years later the religious building was consecrated by Metropolitan Sergius. This happened on the day of the celebration of the Day of the Apostle Andrew the First-Called. Before this, services were held in a construction trailer on the territory of the future church.

Temple bells before installation in the bell tower

The height of the walls of the building is 26 m, crowned by a 30-meter bell tower. They contain 700 kg of bells, which were cast in Voronezh on an individual order. The area adjacent to the temple is 12 acres. According to the majority of townspeople, the previously unremarkable area was noticeably transformed after the completion of the temple.

View of St. Andrew's Church from different sides

According to reviews from parishioners, the priests of the temple are ready to support any person who comes to the church in the most difficult life situation. Many people, having been here, begin to visit the temple regularly to find peace of mind. The ringing of bells that ring over the area on weekends and holy days is a call to attend divine services.

The design of the church and the decorative elements of the facade are traditionally symbolic:

  • The yellow color of the walls and the color design of the arches of the church indicate the connection of the temple with the apostle revered by the Orthodox.
  • The helmet-shaped domes symbolize the spiritual warfare (struggle) that the Church wages against the forces of evil.
  • The gold covering of the domes reflects the greatness of God's Kingdom.

How Andrey became the First-Called

The Bible states that Jesus once saw two brothers - fishermen. They cast nets in the Lake of Galilee. The Son of God turned to the men with a proposal to follow him so that the fishermen would receive the status of “fishers of men.” The brothers complied with the request, and from that moment their lives changed dramatically. The men's names were Simon and Andrew, they lived in Bethsaida.

Who was Andrei? Even before meeting Jesus, he knew John the Baptist and was known to be his disciple. Even then, the man knew about the divine power of Jesus, who was ready to sacrifice himself for the sake of people. Andrew was the first to believe in these stories, and therefore received the nickname of the First-Called, becoming an apostle.

Ancient city of Voronezh

If we compare Voronezh with other Russian cities, we can note the relatively small age of this settlement. The official date of its foundation falls in the mid-to-late sixteenth century, but this did not prevent it from acquiring a rich history and an abundance of cultural attractions. When you plan to visit the Church of St. Andrew the First-Called Voronezh, it is extremely advisable to know the schedule of services, because this building is classified as a cult building and is still in use today.

IMPORTANT! This temple is distinguished by a very organized and friendly community, whose members can tell a lot about both the temple itself and the city as a whole.

When visiting Voronezh, you must plan your time in this wonderful city very wisely, otherwise there may not be enough time to see all the sights.

Apostle Andrew the First-Called

The Holy Apostle Andrew the First-Called was the first to be called to teaching by Jesus Christ. The young man, who was born into a family of illiterate fishermen, became an obedient student, quickly understood and realized the full value of the teachings of Christ.

Having received the necessary knowledge, he began to spread the Gospel throughout the world as a missionary. Unfortunately, the Gospel of Andrew was rejected by Pope St. Gelasius I at the end of the 5th century, and subsequently lost.

In order to spread the true faith among the people, the apostle renounced worldly goods and began to observe chastity, devoting his life to serving Christ.

After witnessing the Crucifixion, Resurrection and Ascension of Jesus Christ, and then the descent of the Holy Spirit, the apostle was given the gifts of healing and prophecy. Using them, he alleviated the suffering of many people and prevented persecution, and he himself stoically endured all the difficulties of life.
