Church of St. Nicholas in Kuznetskaya Sloboda
(also the Church of St. Nicholas in Kuznetsy and the Nikolo-Kuznetsky Church) is an Orthodox church of the Moskvoretsky deanery of the Moscow city diocese. The Church of St. Nicholas in Kuznetsy is one of the few churches in the post-Soviet space that has never been closed.
History[edit]
The parish of the Church of St. Nicholas in Kuznetskaya Sloboda was first mentioned in 1624, but has existed since the end of the 15th century. The church was originally wooden. According to clergy records, the first stone church was founded in 1681 and consecrated in 1683.
1883
The existing church building with the main altar was built in 1805, the refectory with chapels - in 1847.
In 1847, the temple was rebuilt: the third tier of the bell tower was erected, and an extensive four-pillar refectory appeared. Large side altars were installed in the new refectory. The northern altar, consecrated in the name of St. Basil of Amasia, was later reconsecrated by Metropolitan Philaret in honor of the Entry of the Most Holy Theotokos into the temple, but the day of remembrance of St. Basil continues to be celebrated as a patronal holiday, and the saint is still considered the patron saint of the temple.
The main chapel was consecrated in the name of St. Nicholas the Wonderworker of Myra (patronal feast day May 9/22, December 6/19). The southern aisle is in the name of St. Sergius of Radonezh (patronal feast day September 25/October 8, July 5/18), known since 1722.
The northern aisle was built in 1766 in the name of the holy martyr Basil of Amasia. In 1849, this chapel was re-consecrated by Saint Philaret (Drozdov) in honor of the feast of the Entry of the Most Holy Theotokos into the Temple (patronal feast day November 21/December 4). After the revolution, during the years of persecution, the temple did not close.
Since 1992, it has been the main church of the Orthodox St. Tikhon Humanitarian University.
On April 1, 2012, a significant event took place in the history of the temple - His Holiness Patriarch Kirill performed the Great Consecration of the main and Sergius chapels.
Shrines
The temple houses several shrines, the main one of which is considered the miraculous icon of the Mother of God - “Quench My Sorrows.” Many miracles happened thanks to this shrine. The icon helps desperate people in healing bodily ailments and getting rid of sins and temptations.
The image of the Virgin Mary used to be in the Church of St. Nicholas in Sadovniki, but during the years of the revolution it was moved for permanent storage to the Church of St. Nicholas the Wonderworker in Kuznetsy.
The feast of the miraculous icon is January 25.
Other shrines of the temple:
- Icon of the Mother of God “Seeking the Lost”;
- Icon of St. Nicholas the Wonderworker and his life;
- Iveron Icon of the Mother of God;
- Icon of Saint Alexis laying the cross on Saint Sergius.
About other holy Orthodox icons:
- "Key of Understanding"
- "Korsunskaya"
- "Gracious"
Pleasant of God
Historians believe that Saint Nicholas was born around 270.
His parents, the pious Nonna and Feofan, residents of the Asia Minor city of Patara, did not have children for a long time. Born after fervent prayers, the baby showed miracles of divine providence from the first days of his life.
During the baptismal ceremony, the baby stood alone in the font for three hours, showing honor to the Triune God.
Studying the Divine Scripture from an early age, Nicholas reached such spiritual heights that the Bishop of Patara, the uncle of the pious young man, elevated the young man to the priesthood. The saint performed many miracles.
This is interesting! Powerful prayer for students to pass the exam
The Pleasant of God came with help to undeservedly condemned prisoners. The Lycian bishop spent his personal property on protecting his fellow tribesmen from committing unseemly acts. The prayers of the righteous man helped shipwrecked sailors.
Around 350, Saint Nicholas peacefully departed to God. The relics of God's saint were preserved in the local cathedral and exuded fragrant myrrh.
In the 10th century, the Seljuk Turks raided Byzantine lands. Christian shrines were desecrated and plundered.
In 1087, Italian merchants from Bari transported most of the remains of the Bishop of Myra to their homeland. To preserve the relics, the townspeople built a temple.
The saint is revered by Christians of different denominations. On the feast of the patron saint of travelers, pilgrims from all over the world visit the Basilica of St. Nicholas, which is located at Bari, Largo Abate Elia, 13.
Stavropegial Patriarchal Metochion of St. Nicholas the Wonderworker in Bari is ready to welcome Russian pilgrims. The pilgrimage service helps with visa applications and provides accommodation.

How many temples did the blacksmiths have?
Perhaps they were also parishioners of the church on the left bank of the Moscow River. But when the blacksmiths moved to Zamoskvorechye, a new church of St. Nicholas in Kuznetsy grew up at the intersection of Kuznechnaya Street and Vishnyakovsky Lane. In those days, blacksmiths were wealthy people, but their position in the social hierarchy was low. They were sure to pay taxes, unlike the privileged classes who did not pay “sovereign” duties (boyars, nobles, some merchants and the clergy). Blacksmiths were not prohibited from trading, and some of them kept shops.
Russian Ancient Orthodox Church (RDC)
This is one of the directions of the domestic Old Believers. Valid in Russia and several other countries.
Story
The basis of the religious movement was initially made up of followers of the Beglopopovites, who did not accept the Belokrinitsky hierarchy in 1846. On November 4, 1923, they created their own religious group, recognizing Saratov Archbishop Nikola as its head. In 1924, the center of the Russian Old Orthodox Church moved from Saratov to Moscow. Initially, it was based at the St. Nicholas Church at the Rogozhskoe cemetery. On October 14, 1944, the Old Believer Bishop John (Kalinin) was elected Archbishop of Moscow and All Rus'. He died on August 27, 1956.
In 1990, the Intercession Old Believer Church of Zamoskvorechye was transferred to the Moscow community. Since then, it has become the main Moscow temple of the Old Believer community.
In 2002, it was decided to restore the patriarchate in the Old Orthodox Church. Archbishop Alexander became patriarch. Since that time, his residence has been located in Moscow.
