It was established on December 10 or 31, 1850, being separated from the Simbirsk diocese.
From 1923 to 1937 there was also a Samara (Kuibyshev) renovationist diocese.

In the post-war Soviet period, the borders of the diocese coincided with the borders of the Samara region.

On March 15, 2012, the Samara See became the center of the newly established Samara Metropolis. At the same time, the independent Kinel and Otradnensky dioceses were separated from the Samara diocese, and on May 4, 2021, the Syzran dioceses, after which the city districts of Samara, Novokuibyshevsk and Tolyatti, as well as the Volzhsky and left-bank part of the Stavropol districts in the middle part of the Samara region remained under the jurisdiction of the Samara diocese. On July 9, 2019, the Tolyatti city district and the left bank part of the Stavropol region, with the exception of the Vinnovsky Kazan Monastery with its spiritual and educational center, were transferred to the newly established Tolyatti diocese.

    Part of the Samara Metropolis

    The independent Samara diocese was formed on December 10, 1850 (separated from the Simbirsk diocese). In 1850-1944. were called Samara and Stavropol. In 1944-1991. — Kuibyshevskaya and Syzranskaya. Since January 31, 1991 - Samara and Syzran.

    By the decision of the Holy Synod of March 15, 2012 (journal No. 6), the Kinel and Otradnen dioceses were separated from the diocese. The Samara diocese is included in the Samara Metropolis.

    By the decision of the Holy Synod of May 4, 2021 (magazine No. 31), the Syzran diocese was separated from the diocese. The Kazan Monastery of the Mother of God was left in the canonical jurisdiction of the Samara diocese. Vinnovka, Stavropol district and with it the spiritual and educational center of the Samara Metropolis. The Synod decided to have the title “Samara and Tolyatti” for the ruling bishop of the Samara diocese.

The Synod decided to have the title “Samara and Novokuybyshevsky” for the ruling bishop of the Samara diocese.

    The diocese has 10 departments and a theological commission. Social work carried out in parishes is considered one of the important areas of the Samara diocese. The parishes actively work with local authorities, caring for the younger generation, orphans and the elderly.

    Much attention is paid to the spiritual education of society, the development and improvement of the system of spiritual and secular education. In 1994, a theological seminary opened in Samara.

    The Samara Orthodox Seminary became the center of scientific and educational activities throughout the Volga region.

    The Iveron Icon of the Mother of God is one of the shrines of the Samara diocese

    In the churches of the Samara diocese there are many Orthodox shrines: the Iveron Icon of the Mother of God, the icon of the Most Holy Theotokos Deliverer from Troubles, the miraculous icon of the Mother of God of Feodorov.

    The miraculous icon of the Mother of God of the Search for the Lost, which sailed along the Volga to Saratov in 1666. There are miraculous springs here: Nikolsky spring in the Kamenskaya bowl, Bogoroditsky springs on Mount Shikhan.

    On the territory of the Samara region, on Mount Mayak, there is the Bogoroditsky spring. This is one of the most mysterious holy places. The Nikolsky spring of Znamenka is the most famous of all the springs on Samara land.
