Orthodox prayer to St. Archangel Michael for deceased relatives and loved ones

Angel Michael is one of the saints close to the Lord. He is considered the highest angel who provides assistance in worldly affairs. In many religions he is mentioned in different images and faces, but he is revered by many. In the Christian faith, the archangel is considered the leader of the angelic army. He acts as the protector of all people in the earthly and heavenly world. And one of the most common are prayers to the Archangel Michael for the departed.

Who is the Holy Archangel Michael

The Almighty God is surrounded by angels - and all believers know this.
These incorporeal creatures appeared long before the creation of the human world; they combine such qualities as will, power, intelligence and personality. The angelic world was created by God. On earth, angels always appear as messengers of God. Archangel Michael was placed chief over all the heavenly angels by God himself. His name translated from Hebrew means “who is like God.” This Angel is distinguished by enormous spiritual power. He is a faithful fighter for the glory of God and the salvation of the entire human race.

Heavenly angels are not only messengers of God, they are her intercessors before the Lord for all the needs of people and for the forgiveness of their sins. But the most important messages related to changes in the world are conveyed to people directly by Archangel Michael. In addition, Angels always resist the forces of evil directed against the bright world of God, and at the head of such an angelic army is always the Holy Archangel Michael.

This Archangel first became famous for having won the first victory in heaven over the fallen angel Lucifer and expelled him to earth. And today it is believed that the battles between Archangel Michael and Lucifer continue. Only battles now take place periodically on the ground. Moreover, every living person can become a participant in such a battle.

In the annals of ancient times there is often information about the miraculous help of Archangel Michael to people in battles. For example, in 1239 he assisted the Novgorod residents in the confrontation against the invasion of Batu Khan. Witnesses claim that Archangel Michael stood in front of the khan’s army and forbade the storming of the Novgorod fortress. As a result, the war was stopped.

But long before this, a true miracle was performed. At the beginning of the Christian era, a believing peasant had a dream that his mute daughter could be healed if she drank from a healing spring of water. The dream turned out to be prophetic and the girl really spoke. The peasant’s faith only strengthened, and he built a temple in the valley in honor of the Archangel Michael. But the pagans decided to destroy the religious building and flooded the valley. The peasant could not resist this, and he could only pray. His prayer was heard, Archangel Michael descended from heaven and saved the temple. This happened on September 19th. Since then, the miracle of Archangel Michael has been celebrated on this day. It is popularly known as “Michael Michael’s miracle.”

Archangel Michael is the main messenger of heaven, endowed with the powers of the Almighty

Let's start with something simple. Who is Archangel Michael, and can he pray for the dead? It appears several times in the Old Testament:

Dan. 10:13

“But the prince of the kingdom of Persia stood against me twenty-one days; but behold, Michael, one of the first princes, came to help me, and I remained there with the kings of Persia.”

Dan. 10:21

“Nevertheless, I will tell you what is written in the true Scripture; and there is no one who would support me in this except Michael, your prince.”

Archangel Michael is the head of the heavenly army
of Dan. 12:1

“And at that time Michael will arise, the great prince who stands for the children of your people; and a time of trouble will come, such as has not happened since people existed until now; But at that time all of your people who are found written in the book will be saved.”

Also in the New Testament:

Open 12:7–9

“And there was war in heaven: Michael and his angels fought against the dragon, and the dragon and his angels fought [against them], but they did not stand, and there was no longer room for them in heaven. And the great dragon was cast out, that ancient serpent, called the devil and Satan, who deceives the whole world, he was cast out to the earth, and his angels were cast out with him.”

Nowhere in these passages is he called an archangel, except in one place in the epistle of Jude:

Jude 1:9

“Michael the Archangel, when he spoke with the devil, arguing about the body of Moses, did not dare to pronounce a reproachful judgment, but said: “The Lord rebuke you.”

What does the expression “Archangel Michael” mean?

Specialists in historical linguistics find as many as five in these two words. An angel is a “messenger”, “messenger”.

This is what the Bible calls the higher beings who bring God’s messages to Earth. The Lord, according to the most common opinion, does not communicate with people directly - only through angels.

In the heavenly hierarchy, the archangels are the penultimate in importance, Michael is clearly more important

"Arch" is a prefix that means "chief". That is, the “archangel” is the main messenger. Actually, the Bible also hints at the leadership status of Michael.

What does “Mikhail” mean? This is not the familiar Russian “Misha” at all, but three whole ancient words that are translated as “empowered by God.”

It turns out that Archangel Michael is not a personal name, but an indication of the special position of a certain, unnamed, but very powerful being.

Archangel

chief messenger

It is curious that in the classification of Pseudo-Dionysius the Areopagite, archangels are not the dominant creatures in the Heavenly Kingdom, but the eighth in seniority:

  1. Seraphim are the most important angels with six wings;
  2. Cherubs are four-winged angels with four heads (lion, calf, human, eagle), they are also called “tetramorphs”;
  3. Thrones are wheels covered with eyes;
  4. Dominions - mentioned in passing in the apostolic epistles;
  5. Powers - give people the ability to perform miracles;
  6. Authorities - capable of taming the power of the devil;
  7. Principles rule nature and the universe. Mediators between the lower ranks of angels and God;
  8. Archangels are the main angels, eight are known by name, although this is not based on Scripture;
  9. Angels are mediators between people and the Lord.

Guardian angels stand apart. The teaching about them also has no basis in the Bible. And it is not at all a fact that it is correct to identify them with any of the nine angelic ranks.

We cannot without doubt classify Michael among the rank of archangels.

The Archangel (commander-in-chief) of the heavenly army, endowed with Divine powers, most likely has a place above this list.

But this is guesswork. Angelology is a science that can learn little from the Holy Scriptures. Basically she is left with apocrypha and legends.

There is another interesting fact - Jehovah's Witnesses consider Jesus Christ to be the Archangel Michael.

The Mystery of Salvation

Any of us has experienced grief: our loved ones, relatives, and close people are dying. We remember them, and they, in turn, sometimes appear in our night visions, as if reminding us of themselves. What does it mean? What can we do for them?

Orthodox prayer for the dead

Many people often visit graveyards, look after their own graves, and install expensive and massive tombstones. But do the deceased themselves need grave beauty? Is this what they ask of us?

People who do not believe in God are unable to do anything for the soul of a deceased person. They believe that after death the body disintegrates and the soul does not exist. But the memory of the deceased lives in the hearts of people. They hold feasts with alcoholic libations on death anniversaries, cry and sob looking at old photographs; for them the personality of the deceased no longer exists - it died with the death of his body.

Orthodoxy about death:

  • 9 days after death
  • 40 days after death
  • How to properly remember the dead

The Orthodox religion teaches that a person does not die, that is, he is not dead, but alive! His soul is immortal! But upon death she goes to heaven or hell. Few righteous people are awarded the joy of heaven; many, due to their unconfessed sins, are sent to hell. During their lifetime, conscience, the Voice of God, did not force them to think and atone for their sins in confession in the Temple of God.

Which saints can you still pray for protection?

In addition to Archangel Michael, you can ask for protection from many other Christian saints. The main thing is to decide what exactly you need to be protected from. Despite the fact that you can turn to the Almighty, the Virgin Mary and the saints for any everyday needs, there are still saints to whom the Lord, for their deeds and exploits, gave the grace to protect and protect us all.

Thus, prayers for protection at work, from the dishonor of a girl and from misfortunes on the road are said to Saint Nicholas the Wonderworker. From corruption, the evil eye, magicians, sorcerers and demonic obsessions, it is customary to turn to the holy martyrs Cyprian and Justinius.

We must not forget about turning to your Guardian Angel, because he is your closest and first protector and patron, ready to come to your aid at the first call.

In addition, in order for you to always have very strong protection from troubles, you need to be closer to the Lord and live a church life. After all, the best amulet against misfortunes and enemies is sincere faith in God and His power. You should attend church, participate in church sacraments - communion, confession. So, we will always be under the supervision of the Lord and Guardian Angel.

God bless you!

From damage and the evil eye

The clergy believe that a true believer is not afraid of the machinations of his ill-wishers and perceives the troubles that arise in life not as damage and the evil eye, but as a test of the Lord.

Thus, a Christian looks for the reasons for what is happening within himself and does not shift responsibility for his actions to magicians and sorcerers, caring about the salvation of his own soul.

When turning to the Almighty when tempted by a demon, one should ask for grace, patience, strengthening in weaknesses, consolation in sorrows and deliverance from the actions of unclean spirits.

Michaelmas - what you can and cannot do?

On this great day it was forbidden to work. Those who disobeyed and went to work on Michaelmas were in for trouble and an emergency could occur. But if a person does not work of his own free will or does good deeds, then an exception is made for him and he is not punished. The main thing on Michaelmas Day is to do more good deeds and try to help your neighbor in every possible way.

There is no need to quarrel and swear on this bright holiday. Solve all problems peacefully, try to find a common language and come to an agreement. We must try to forgive all our offenders and, if possible, improve relationships. It’s better to go on this day to visit or invite friends over, go for a walk, and set the festive table. Before fasting in Rus', it was customary to organize a grand feast to reconcile the warring parties.

Miracles

The saint, even before the birth of the Savior, assisted the Jews in eradicating paganism.

There is a well-known legend that Michael once healed a little girl who could not speak. In a dream, he appeared to the child’s father and showed him the way to “Holy Water,” which subsequently helped him get rid of muteness. The townspeople soon learned about this miracle and built a temple as a sign of gratitude.

Also, the “doer of God’s will” during the persecution of Christians saved the clergyman Archippus of Herotopus, who converted many pagans to the Orthodox faith.

One day the Archangel helped a young girl named Evdokia find the “true path in life.” She was very beautiful, often entered into vicious relationships with men and did not refuse to accept generous gifts from them. One day, a girl witnessed a conversation between people who mentioned the Last Judgment for the sins committed by humanity on Earth. Soon she turned to the priest and began asking him questions about God. The girl spent the next week in solitude, praying for her unrighteous deeds. On the 7th day, Archangel Michael appeared before her, who told her about the forgiveness of the sins of those who repent of them. After meeting with the Archangel, Evdokia began to lead a righteous lifestyle.

Who else can you turn to for protection?

Archangel Michael is not the only saint who will help when things are not going well in life. You can ask for help from a number of Christian saints, but you don’t have to pray to just one. The main thing is to understand what exactly you need to get as a result, what misfortune to protect yourself from, what cherished desire to fulfill.

If we are talking about protection from evil people, the negative impact of circumstances, then it makes sense to turn to the Virgin Mary or to the Almighty Himself. But in cases where:

  • you need to establish your personal life and positive relationships with others, you can pray to St. Nicholas the Wonderworker;
  • to protect yourself from misfortunes on the road - to the Virgin Mary;
  • protect the spirit and body from magical influence, from the evil eye and demons - to Justinius or Cyprian.

Do not forget that sometimes a person’s best protector is his own guardian angel. He is the first intercessor and patron, whom you can ask at any time and who will give what you want first. There are a lot of prayers to the guardian angel.

But in any case, prayer will only help if a person lives a church life. There is no point in asking Michael to carry out his plans if you do not attend church and do not participate in such sacraments as confession or communion. You can pray to Michael in any setting, like any other Saint, you don’t have to order a service. Before the home altar, the words are clearly pronounced, most importantly, not in a memorized text, but with sincere love for God, an understanding of what is being asked.

Celebration of the day of the Archangel Michael on November 21

The day of remembrance of the Archangel Michael, popularly called Michaelmas Day, is the last major holiday on the eve of the multi-day fast before Christmas, which lasts 40 days. Archangel Michael is the chief above the angels, and his image is very significant for Orthodox Christians. All day on November 21, they try not to violate the prohibitions of the holiday, pay attention to weather signs, honor customs, and pray. Accepted:

  1. have fun;
  2. receive guests;
  3. rest after agricultural work;
  4. organize celebrations;
  5. show hospitality;
  6. to meet relatives and close acquaintances on the doorstep;
  7. treat you to hearty dishes, meat products, jellied meat;
  8. to appease the servants who protect livestock;
  9. to brew beer.

We must not forget about the prohibitions of the holiday:

  1. they don’t wash their hair, believing that they can “wash their mind”;
  2. they don’t use piercing or cutting objects, that’s why they even break bread;
  3. they do not do handicrafts, which means they cannot sew, weave, knit, or embroider;
  4. working not for the benefit of others, but only for selfish purposes, is unacceptable;
  5. You cannot quarrel, create scandals, showdowns, or raise your voice;
  6. You can’t tell good dreams, because they may not come true.

And by the weather on November 21st you can find out what winter will be like:

  1. if morning frost covered the ground with grass, then winter will be snowy;
  2. There is thick fog in the morning - warming is expected;
  3. early dawn is a harbinger of imminent frosts;
  4. a sunny day without precipitation - frosts will be severe;
  5. at the same time as the snow it began to rain - a rainy and damp spring will come;
  6. there is no wind or precipitation all day - it means frost.

The Archangel Michael is mentioned in the Bible in many stories. At the same time, in the descriptions of some events his name is not indicated, but the Church is sure that they are talking about him. The Archangel leads the heavenly army, fights the dark forces, and guards the gates of Paradise with a sword in his hands. The Bible says that the Archangel Michael threw Satan and fallen spirits out of Heaven.

Christian prayer to Archangel Michael for the departed

Every year the Christian Church celebrates two special dates, one of them is September 6/19, the day of remembrance of the miracle performed in Khoneh. On this day, Michael diverted the seething mountain stream from the Christian temple, where numerous healings had taken place over the years. The second significant date is November 9, 21, the day of Michael - the winner of adversaries and deliverer from troubles and sorrows. According to legend, if at midnight on the eve of these dates, with a sincere prayer you ask Archangel Michael for your deceased relatives and friends, calling them by name, then you can thereby save their souls. Since twice a year, on the night before his holidays, Michael comes to the edge of a huge fiery abyss, lowers his wing into the fiery hyena, extinguishes the fire and leads countless sinners out of hell. Truly saving prayer on such days to Archangel Michael for deceased relatives.

Orthodox prayer to St. Archangel Michael for the souls of the departed

God endowed Michael with enormous power and strength to relieve torment and save those whose sinful souls are burning in hell. Until the end of time, Archangel Michael, accompanied by disembodied heavenly forces, will perform God's mercy twice a year. These days, the kneeling prayer of Archangel Michael for the departed continues to sound at the throne of the Most High until God has mercy on sinners. They also pray to the Archangel for living people; every morning it is advisable to start with a prayer to Michael, naming by name the names of relatives they received at baptism. Those who perform this prayer daily will be protected from evil people, from the temptations and snares of the devil, and the prayer will save them from the torments of hell.

Strong prayer of Archangel Michael for deceased suicides

The Archangel also saves the sinful souls of those people who during their lifetime provided all possible assistance to the poor, but after death, for their sins, found themselves in hell. Thanks to the intercession of Michael, God saves such sinners from the torments of hell. By praying to Michael, you can even alleviate the torment for such a terrible sin as suicide. The living must not forget that our alms and prayer to St. Archangel Michael for the souls of deceased suicides saves them from eternal torment.

Text of the prayer of Archangel Michael for the departed

Holy Archangel of God Michael, if my relatives (names of the deceased... and relatives in the flesh up to the tribe of Adam) are in the lake of fire, then lead them out of the eternal fire with your blessed wing and bring them to the Throne of God and beg our Lord Jesus Christ to forgive them sins. Amen.

The connection between prayer and John the Evangelist is a fiction

To give even more “weight” to the prayer, they refer to the sermon of the Alexandrian Patriarch Timothy II Elur. It is impossible to find the text of this sermon anywhere other than articles on prayer to Archangel Michael. Suspicious, isn't it?

Timothy allegedly visited the house of John the Theologian’s disciple Prochorus, where he found a manuscript about the lake of fire for sinners. As if there is no more terrible torture in the world, and there is enough room for everyone.

Only Archangel Michael is able to dip his snow-white wing into the lake and pull out sinners.

Therefore, you need to read this prayer on certain days.

Of course, there are no primary sources. Another interesting fact is the presence of approving comments on the prayer from Abbot Gury (Chezlov), a rather dubious figure, and it is unlikely that his “quotes” should be taken seriously.

Iconography

The iconography dedicated to the saint is quite extensive. More often the saint is depicted with a cane-shaped spear in one hand and a mirror sphere in the other. The latter is a symbol of foresight given by the Lord to Michael.

On other icons, Michael is depicted as the conqueror of the Devil - he tramples him underfoot. At the same time, in one of his hands there is a victorious branch of a date tree, and in the other a spear, on which there is a cross or a sword and shield.

But there are other representations of Michael in iconography. For example, when depicting the Last Judgment, he looks like a warrior with scales, while the Devil acts on one cup and tries to tilt it in his direction. There are also variations when Michael looks like that saint who weighs the good and evil deeds of a person after death, and after that accompanies him. There are also images of Michael riding on a horse with a sword and armor.

PRAYER FOR THE DECEASED

The Lord named him the ranks of the heavenly forces of the incorporeal and allows him annually on September 6/19 and November 9/21, accompanied by Angels and saints, to approach souls condemned to torment.

Archangel Michael helps to save those who gave alms in his name, as well as in the name of martyrs and saints.

Archangel Michael intercedes for them, for the saints endured sorrow and suffering in the name of the Lord.

He forever frees from execution those for whom sacrifices and prayers are made.

Archangel Michael does not cease to do God's mercy every year on September 6/19 and on his day on November 8/21 - which will continue until the end of time.

On these significant days, he falls, kneeling before the veil of God, prostrates himself and prays for souls in the terrible torments of hell until God deigns to have mercy on those people for whom they pray especially earnestly on earth, giving generous alms for them .

He also prays for everyone living on earth.

The Lord will not forget the one who has done good, and will reward him piously.

Prayer to Saint Michael the Archangel

Lord God the Great King, Beginningless! Send, O Lord, Thy Archangel Michael to the aid of Thy servant (name), take me away from my enemies, visible and invisible. Oh, Lord Michael the Archangel! destroyer of demons: forbid all enemies who fight with me, make them like sheep and crush them like dust before the wind. Oh, Lord the Great Archangel Michael! The six-winged first prince and commander of the heavenly powers, Cherub and Seraphim. Oh, beloved Archangel Michael, be my helper in all grievances, sorrows, sorrows; in deserts, at crossroads, on rivers and seas - a quiet refuge. Deliver me, Great Archangel Michael, from all the charms of the devil, when I hear my sinful servant (name) praying to you and calling on you and calling on your holy name: hasten to help me and hear my prayer. Oh, great Archangel Michael! The whole of the honest and life -giving heavenly cross of the Lord, the prayers of the Most Holy Theotokos and the Holy Apostles, the holy prophet of the God of Elijah, the Holy of Nicholas the Miracle Worker, the Holy of the Great Martyr Nikita and Eustathius, the Monk Father and the Holy of Saints and all the Holy Heavenly Heavenly Heads, . Amen.

Oh, Great Archangel Michael, help me, your sinful servant (name of the rivers), deliver me from the coward, the flood, the fire, the sword and the flattering enemy, from the storm, from the invasion and from the evil one. Deliver me, your servant (name), great Archangel Michael, always, now and ever, and forever and ever. Amen.

Holy Archangel of God Michael, if my relatives (names of the deceased) are in the lake of fire, then lead them out of the eternal fire with your blessed wing and bring them to the Throne of God and beg our Lord Jesus Christ to forgive them their sins.

You can also pray for all your living loved ones (children, husband, wife, parents) daily, calling their baptismal names. It is advisable to do this every morning.

Whoever reads this prayer every day will not be touched by either the devil or an evil person, and his heart will not be tempted by flattery, and he will be delivered from hell.

This prayer was written on the porch of the Church of the Holy Archangel Michael in the Chudov Monastery, in the Kremlin on August 11, 1906 (/1/).

Hegumen Gury on prayer for the departed on Archangel Michael

R.B. Maria (spiritual daughter of Abbot Gury): “And he /Fr. Gury/ said: “Mary, we need to pray more for the departed.

Because a living person can still pray for himself, somewhere the Lord will lead him to God through some kind of sorrow or illness, and he will come to church and light a candle and pray. But your deceased relative - grandfather, grandmother or great-grandfather, he can no longer do anything about it.

He is just waiting for your prayers.

And so he told us, he told everyone, and he told me personally: “Mary, there is such a day, once a year it happens on Archangel Michael.”

He said that Michael the Archangel lowers his white wing into hell himself, and through the prayers of those on earth at night, the Lord forgives the sins of the deceased, our relatives.

And whoever, if a suicide, someone out of ignorance ended his life by suicide, he can alleviate the suffering, the fate of this servant of God.

I pray for my departed: “Lord Jesus Christ, Son of God, grant the Kingdom of Heaven, forgive the voluntary or involuntary sins of my physical father, God’s servant Onuphrius.”

And so I bow to the ground.

And so, as he said: “Invisibly, souls from hell are liberated along this wing.”

And everyone who prays, thanks to this wing of the Archangel Michael, His prayer, everyone gets out as best they can: someone a step higher, someone higher, maybe even out of hell.

We advise you to study Congratulations on Tatyana’s Day in verse

We can beg our relatives out of hell with our prayers on earth.” (/2/, “Salt of the Earth” (Film 5), Hegumen Gury, 0:57).

Prayer to Archangel Uriel on Thursday

Archangel Uriel in Orthodoxy is revered as a saint who gives illumination to believers and guides the ignorant on the path of enlightenment.

Thanks to Uriel the Archangel, sinners realize their lost souls and accept repentance.

It is recognized that the Saint helps to overcome life's difficulties and find answers to strange situations - perhaps that is why scientists chose Archangel Uriel as their patron.

Text of Thursday prayer

“Holy Archangel of God Uriel, illuminated by the Divine light and abundantly filled with the fire of fiery hot love, throw a spark of this fiery fire into my cold heart, and illuminate my dark soul with your light.

O great Archangel of God Uriel, you are the radiance of the Divine fire and the enlightener of those darkened by sins: enlighten my mind, my heart, my will with the power of the Holy Spirit, and guide me on the path of repentance, and pray to the Lord God, may the Lord deliver me from the underworld and from all enemies visible and invisible, now and ever and unto ages of ages. Amen."

Images of Archangel Michael

The saint is remembered for his good deeds that he performed for people. Priests regularly remind parishioners that it is Archangel Michael who will lead the army of the Lord in the fight against dark forces. On icons he is often depicted with a spear or long sword in his hands. The archangel is dressed in the armor of a warrior, and at his feet is the defeated devil in the guise of a dragon.

The sword symbolizes victory over demons; with its help the Saint protects believers from lies, temptations and unclean thoughts. The spear is a sign that the fight against Satan is being waged in the name of the Savior through self-sacrifice, patience and obedience.

Some icon painters depict Archangel Michael holding a shield or scales of justice - objects that emphasize the inevitability of punishment for sins committed. Wings are a symbol indicating the speedy fulfillment of God’s covenants entrusted to the Archangel. White material with the image of the Red Cross means fidelity and purity of service to God.

Who can ask for help and repentance

St. Archangel Michael is able to give help and healing even to those who do not consider themselves believers. Michael patronizes those who opened up to him and came with a pure heart and without evil intent. Therefore, surprisingly, even atheists or agnostics can ask the saint for help.

The chief angel of God helps, of course, all Orthodox believers. Age, race, nationality and gender are not important to him. If you have a specific request, he will help make your wish come true. But it is better to contact not on purely personal issues, but in such a way that other people can also get help.

Those who can contact Mikhail:

  • feels that people and external forces seem to have taken up arms against him;
  • cannot find a common language with others;
  • for unknown reasons, attracts strange and criminal situations;
  • often exposed to temptation;
  • lost his way in life, lost his goal and simply doesn’t know what to do next;
  • getting ready for a long train ride and fearing for the safety of his home;
  • constantly tormented by feelings of resentment or anger;
  • not distinguished by endurance and patience;
  • cannot set true goals and achieve them.

They also turn to Mikhail if they feel that they are being negatively affected. Of course, this is easy to see if, for example, a woman found pins in the house or cemetery soil poured under the threshold. But even if there are no material signs, and the condition worsens, there is a feeling that everything is going wrong, that is, it makes sense to turn to Michael with prayer for protection from the evil eye and magical effects.

Examples of real miracles of the formidable commander

The appearance of heavenly powers in real human life is rare. But Archangel Michael often contacted people and helped them in every possible way. There are several stories of miracles that Michael performed from Scripture.

The most famous story is the miracle at Khoneh. According to the chronicles, a temple to the Archangel was built in Phrygia. It was made by one of the wealthy townspeople as a memory of the fact that Mikhail saved his daughter from an incurable disease. The temple was also liked by other townspeople. Archippus Herotopsky, who became famous for his virtue, served as a sexton for more than 60 years. Of course, in those days the wars between Jews and pagans were strong, and the latter could not help but take revenge on the sexton. The pagans decided not only to kill him, but also to overthrow the temple. To do this, they connected two rivers and directed them towards the temple. The sexton immediately began to pray to Michael, and he appeared. Hitting the ground with his rod, the Saint created a large hole into which all the river water flowed.

Another famous story of miraculous action is that of the plague in Rome. The 6th century AD was coming to an end, and the plague broke out in Rome. At that time, Pope Gregory the Great, who led the empire, called on the entire city to pray for salvation. Michael appeared at the top of Anlrian's mausoleum. The epidemic began to decline immediately, and most of the city's population survived. After this, a sculpture was installed for the Saint.

Michael helps not only in wars and epidemics, but is also able to heal from ordinary human vices. An iconic story about a woman, Evdokia, who had indescribable beauty. But, as often happens, beauty corrupted her, and she took the path of bodily pleasures. One evening, a woman accidentally heard from her window a parable about the Last Judgment, and this prompted her to begin closely studying the Bible. Evdokia spent a week in prayer, and then Michael appeared to her and took her to heaven.

Of course, there are also modern known stories about the miracles of Archangel Michael. According to reviews, the Saint has repeatedly helped to improve relationships, protect against the evil eye, get money, and protect yourself while traveling. In order to ask him for something, it is not at all necessary to pray in church. The prayer will have the same power if you conduct it at home in front of the icon, but with a pure heart and righteous intentions.

Prayer to Archangel Michael from evil forces

It is worth noting that in Russia there are many churches named after the Archangel, and his icons are sold in every shop. Throughout the country there is not a house of God where his face is not depicted on icons, frescoes, and icons. Remember that wherever you are, you can always turn to Archangel Michael for help and protection from evil forces.

Many believe that prayer to the archangel is a kind of spell or amulet. This is a mistaken opinion inherent in many people who perform prayer unconsciously. Prayer does not have its own power, it is an appeal to God through a saint, in this case through Archangel Michael

We pray to the saint that he turns to the Lord, so that he, in turn, will pay attention to sinners

There are no strong and weak prayers, there are no strong and weak saints, you should not think that one prayer can help better than another

The most important thing in prayer is your sincerity and the desire to open your soul before God, who will patronize you and help you through the conversion of the saints

With these words they turn to the supreme angel to protect themselves from evil forces and diseases:

The prayer was never written on the porch of the Chudov Monastery

Everything seems to be fine. There is the head of the heavenly army, he knows the secret of our salvation. Take the names of the deceased on the desired date, pray for the salvation of human souls, because they themselves can no longer do it.

But there's no need to rush! It's worth looking into. Where did this text come from? They tell us about the Miracle Monastery, supposedly there, on the porch, this prayer was written.

The Miracle Monastery was damaged by an explosion; it is impossible to prove that a prayer to the Archangel Michael was written on its walls

But this is not confirmed by any sources. The explosion of the first October coup soon makes it impossible to verify this version. And it’s clear why it is needed. Such a reference adds “weight” and credibility to the prayer. There is no reason to doubt that the fact about the monastery is fiction.

There are many such far-fetched stories. Dozens of prayers allegedly exist in places that cannot now be found, hundreds of texts are attributed to people who are no longer able to refute their authorship. This is a common practice in creating apocrypha.

Michaelmas Day - the history of the holiday

The head of the Ethereal Heavenly forces is Archangel Michael. It was he who dealt with all the evil spirits, defeated the adversaries and defended the faith. In ancient descriptions, Michael is depicted in military armor with a sword, as the main commander. Nine orders of angels and archangels help and are responsible for human life and the earth. On the dome in the Refectory Hall there is a clear image of the heavenly servants. Each of us is assigned our own archangel, who is responsible for good deeds, prayer, thoughts, travel, and power. But, unfortunately, in the modern world, few people listen to God, an angel or another person.

The main task of the Archangel is to fight evil spirits and provide support to those who are in trouble or faced with a series of ongoing failures. For every Christian believer, Archangel Michael is the most faithful helper against universal evil. They turn to him with various requests, mainly asking for healing, protection from troubles and misfortunes, help in solving everyday issues, asking for protection from dark forces and before a long journey.

Mikhail does not like thieves and robbers, he always punishes them. It does not ignore those who suffered from natural disasters or participants in war. People address their misfortune, grief and sadness, and every prayer is sure to be heard.

About the deceased

Believers venerate the Saint annually on September 19 and November 21. According to church canons, these days he kneels before God and prays for the souls of the departed, who on Earth led a far unrighteous lifestyle and for this are forced to endure torment until the Lord has mercy on them. On these days, services are held in the name of Archangel Michael and parishioners turn to him so that he can give peace to souls who are doomed to hellish torment.

Holy Scripture indicates that on September 19 (the miracle of the Archangel Michael at Khoneh) and November 21 (Michael's Day) the saint can rescue the souls of the departed from hell. He approaches the very edge of the “kingdom of Lucifer”, lowers his right wing and the “Fiery Hyena” calms down for a while, after which the Archangel frees the dead from the Underworld.

We advise you to study Psalm 75

According to the apocryphal books Archangel Michael:

  • “washes” the souls of the dead before they enter the Heavenly Kingdom;
  • entrusts the souls of people who tried not to sin in earthly life to Jesus Christ to transport them to the Heavenly Kingdom;
  • “accompanies” the Virgin Mary in the Underworld and explains to her the origins of human sin (the apocryphal “Walk of the Virgin Mary through torment”).

The writings of Greek clergy indicate that the Archangel is present at the moment when a person takes his last breath. Also, representatives of the clergy claim that Michael, fulfilling God’s will, separates the “pious” from sinners. Moreover, the Archangel can transfer a person who could not resist the temptations of Satan, but did a good deed on Earth, towards the righteous.

PRAYER FOR THE DEAD ON ARCHANGEL MICHAEL September 19 and November 21

PRAYER FOR THE DEAD ON ARCHANGEL MICHAEL September 19 and November 21 (Apostle John the Theologian and Abbot Gury)

At that time, I saw in wonderful beauty the Archangel Michael himself, who in a beautiful boat of Cherubim and Seraphim, accompanied by many Angels, saints, prophets and martyrs, was approaching the lake of fire. They were all clothed with indescribable beauty. Soon the Angels approached the sinners who were being condemned to execution. Immediately the fire went out, the abyss stopped smoking, the disgusting animals disappeared. When everything calmed down, Archangel Michael plunged his snow-white wing into the lake - he brought out many human souls and carried them to the shore. Then he lowered the same right wing a second time - and brought even more souls out of the lake than the first time. Then the Cherubim and Seraphim prostrated themselves before him and began to ask him to submerge the wing - for the third time. Archangel Michael directed his kindly pleading gaze to the Lord and offered up fervent heartfelt prayers for the salvation of those suffering for their sins. Then he again plunged the snow-white wing into the lake and brought out countless new souls. Then the Angels and Saints, having received these souls with great joy, washed them with the water of Grace, anointed them with the fragrance of joy and placed them before the face of God. At that hour a voice came from the curtain of the Lord:

The mystery of our salvation through the prayers of Archangel Michael. What prayer to read for the salvation of souls from hell

There is a legend that reveals the secret of salvation for sinners languishing in hell. Saint John the Theologian was walking with an angel when he saw Gehenna - a lake of fire, in which those who sinned and did not repent experienced indescribable torment. Their bodies were devoured by huge worms, and the height of the flame rose 300 m above this place. The suffering was so great that John began to cry.

Soon a beautiful angel appeared - Archangel Michael, he was surrounded by many heavenly beings, martyrs, righteous people and saints. Then Gehenna stopped smoking, the fire went out, and the terrible animals disappeared. The next moment, the Archangel lowers his wing to help the souls escape. Then he repeats this action again. But before lowering his wing for the third time, the Archangel prays to the Lord. He asks for forgiveness of their sins. After this, he immerses the wing for the third time to help even more sufferers get out.

Heavenly beings received the souls of sinners, washed them, and placed them before the Lord. And then the voice of the Son of God is heard, he announced that thanks to the mercy presented by Archangel Michael, these sinners are now clean and can enter the Kingdom of Heaven. Seeing this, John decides to pray to the beginningless and infinite Lord, as well as to the Archangel, reading a grateful akathist. In the same way, today's prayer helps to send the soul of the deceased to heaven.

Text of the prayer to Archangel Raphael for the healing of the sick and health

Prayer words to Saint Raphael the Archangel can be found in the Complete Orthodox Prayer Book.

Before the face of Archangel Raphael they pray for the healing of ailments and for marital happiness:

“Oh, great holy Archangel Raphael, stand before the throne of God! By the grace given to you by the Almighty Physician of our souls and bodies, you healed the righteous man Tobit from bodily blindness, and you saved his son Tobias from an evil spirit while traveling with him. I earnestly pray to you: be my guide in my life.

Save me from all visible and invisible enemies, heal my mental and physical illnesses, guide my life towards repentance of sins and the doing of good deeds. Oh, great holy Raphael the Archangel! Hear me, a sinner, praying to you, and make me worthy in this and the future life to thank and glorify our common Creator forever and ever. Amen."

For bedtime

It is recommended to pray to Michael the Archangel before going to bed when you are in a peaceful mood, and not in a fit of rage or jealousy.

It is advisable to perform a prayer service in front of the icon; fortunately, you can purchase it in almost every church:

“Michael the Archangel, bright and formidable commander of the Heavenly King! Before the Last Judgment, let me repent from my sins, deliver my soul from the net that catches me and bring me to the God who created me, who dwells on the cherubim, and pray diligently for her, so that through your intercession she will go to a place of rest.

O formidable commander of the heavenly powers, representative of all at the Throne of the Lord Christ, guardian of the strong man and wise armorer, strong commander of the Heavenly King!

Have mercy on me, a sinner who requires your intercession, save me from all visible and invisible enemies, and moreover, strengthen me from the horror of death and from the embarrassment of the devil, and grant me the honor of unashamedly presenting myself to our Creator at the hour of His terrible and righteous judgment.

O all-holy, great Michael the Archangel! Do not despise me, a sinner, who prays to You for your help and intercession in this world and in the future, but grant me there together with you to glorify the Father and the Son and the Holy Spirit forever and ever. Amen."

The story of the ascension of Archangel Michael

The word “angel” is translated as “messenger,” that is, through his angels, God conveys his will to any person. The prefix “archi” indicates that some angels belong to a more exalted mission than others.

Archangel Michael in Scripture is called “the leader of the army of the Lord,” “prince,” and is depicted as the main fighter against unclean and any disorder among people. Therefore, his church title is “archistratig”, in other words - the main warrior, leader. He is the leader of the angels of God. It was under his leadership that angels fought against the devil and demons. And by order of God, even before the birth of Christ, he helped the people of Israel in the fight against the pagans. And he showed Moses the way when he led the Jews out of Egypt. Before the storming of Jericho, he appeared to Joshua. The chronicles of the Christian Church remember many of the miracles that this angel performed.

Who is Archangel Michael?

Archangel Michael is the chief among the archangels, the leader of the Lord’s army, or archangel (which in ancient Greek means “commander-in-chief”). Under his leadership, the angels fought against the devil and demons.

Here is how it is written about this in the Apocalypse of John the Theologian: “And there was war in heaven: Michael and his angels fought against the dragon, and the dragon and his angels fought against them, but they could not resist, and there was no longer a place for them in heaven.

And the great dragon was cast out, the ancient serpent, called the devil and Satan..."

Protection of Michael the Archangel revealed to people

Even before the Nativity of Christ, the Archangel Michael, at the command of God, helped the Jews in the fight against the pagans. When Moses led the Jews out of Egypt, the Archangel Michael accompanied them, showing them the way. He appeared to Joshua before the storming of Jericho. After the death of Moses, the Archangel Michael hid the burial place of his body so that the Jews would not worship the deceased prophet as God.

The history of the Christian Church has preserved the memory of many miracles performed by the Archangel Michael. The story of one of them became the basis for a church holiday. In the 4th century, near the city of Colossae in western Asia Minor, Christians built a temple dedicated to the Archangel Michael. He stood on the bank of the river.

At that time, pagan priests fought with Christian clergy because more and more people were converting to Christianity and did not want to serve false gods. The pagans decided to destroy the temple. They built a dam on the river so that the water would overflow and destroy the temple. A pious man named Archippus served in the temple.

Having learned that they wanted to destroy the temple, he fervently prayed to God. And at that moment, when the waters of the river were supposed to overflow and wash away the temple, Archangel Michael, by the command of God, made a gorge in the mountain, into which the water flowed without damaging the temple. But the gorge remained in this place: thanks to it, the area received the name Khona (which means “gorge”).

In honor of this event, the celebration of the Miracle of the Archangel Michael was established in Khoneh.

For Russian Orthodox Christians, a miracle that occurred in 1239 is of particular significance. Residents of Veliky Novgorod fervently prayed for the salvation of their native city from the invasion of the troops of Batu Khan.

Suddenly the khan stopped the offensive and turned his troops back. Later, seeing an image of the Archangel Michael in one of the temples in Kyiv, Batu said: “That’s who forbade me to go to Veliky Novgorod.”

What exactly does Archangel Michael help believers with?

Michael the Archangel is deeply revered on Russian soil. Many churches are dedicated to him, including the famous Archangel Cathedral of the Moscow Kremlin. They pray to Saint Archangel Michael when

  • endure tribulations and temptations
  • asking for protection from evil forces
  • asking for healing of illnesses

Since Archangel Michael is the head of the heavenly army, they pray to him

  • about protecting the Fatherland in dangerous times
  • about the safe return of soldiers from the campaign

They also turn to Archangel Michael when they are going to build a new house - he helps to arrange a happy life in the new house and protects the home from thieves and disasters.

Any person who needs protection from temptation can pray to Archangel Michael at home. You can also order a prayer service with an akathist in the church.

In popular “Orthodoxy” it is believed that prayer to the Archangel Michael provides very strong protection and is a talisman. This idea is wrong.

It cannot be said that one prayer can be more effective than another (as they said in the old days, “more accessible to God”) or that one saint is stronger than another.

Prayer is a personal appeal to a saint so that he prays to God for us. And God can help us through the prayer of this saint. But this is the will of God, there is no mechanism to force God to act as we need. However, by His mercy and through the holy prayers of the Archangel Michael, He can give us what we ask.

O all-holy, great Michael the Archangel! Do not despise us sinners who pray to you for help and your intercession in this world and in the future, but grant us there together with you to glorify the Father and the Son and the Holy Spirit forever and ever.

Prayer to Archangel Michael is a very strong protection

On the icons the supreme angel is depicted with a sharp, long sword in his hand. This is a weapon for victory over evil forces, it cuts off human anxieties and fears. It helps people get rid of deceit, evil and takes them away from temptations. He is the first protector of all who follow the laws of God.

There is one strong prayer that was written on the porch of the Church of the Archangel Michael, the Miracle Monastery in the Kremlin, which was blown up after the October coup. If you read these lines every day throughout your life, then as a result a person will receive very strong protection:

  • from the evil one;
  • from evil people;
  • from the evil eye and other magical effects;
  • from temptations;
  • from sudden attacks and robberies;
  • from tragic events.

And also, these words addressed to the supreme angel will help the soul get rid of the torments of hell. You need to write on a piece of paper the names of your children, parents, loved ones, in general, everyone for whom you are asking. Further, when reading the petition to the angel, you should name all the written names, where (name) is.

And, twice a year, at 12 o’clock at night - from November 20 to 21, on Michaelmas Day, and from September 18 to 19, on the day of veneration of the Archangel, it is necessary to ask for all the dead, calling everyone by name. And at the same time, add the phrase “and all relatives according to the flesh of the tribe of Adam” to the petition.

These are the words used to address the supreme angel:

“O Lord Great God, King Without Beginning, send, O Lord, Thy Archangel Michael to the aid of Thy servant (name), take me away from my enemies, visible and invisible! O Lord Archangel Michael, pour out myrrh of moisture on your servant (name). O Lord Michael the Archangel, destroyer of demons!

Forbid all enemies who fight against me, make them like sheep and crush them like dust before the wind. O great Lord Michael the Archangel, six-winged first prince and commander of the weightless powers, Cherub and Seraphim! O God-pleasing Archangel Michael! Be my help in everything: in insults, in sorrows, in sorrows, in deserts, at crossroads, on rivers and seas a quiet refuge! Deliver, Michael Archangel, from all the charms of the devil, when you hear me, your sinful servant (name), praying to you and calling on your holy name, hasten to my help, and hear my prayer, O Great Archangel Michael!

Lead all those who oppose me with the power of the honorable life-giving cross of the Lord, with the prayers of the Most Holy Theotokos and the Holy Apostles, and St. Nicholas the Wonderworker, St. Andrew the Fool and the Holy Prophet of God Elijah, and the Holy Great Martyr Nikita and Eustathius, the Reverend Father of all Saints and Martyr and all the holy heavenly powers. Amen.

Oh, Great Archangel Michael, help me, your sinful servant (name), deliver me from the coward, the flood, the fire, the sword and the flattering enemy, from the storm, from the invasion and from the evil one. Deliver me, your servant (name), great Archangel Michael, always, now and ever, and forever and ever. Amen".

Pilgrimage to the icons of the saint

Throughout the country there are a huge number of churches and temples dedicated to the Archangel. There is not a single house of God where his image is not located in the iconostasis, on frescoes or icons. And wherever you go, for the help of the Higher Powers of Heaven, you can turn to this servant of God everywhere.

Previously, this prayer served as a spell and amulet.

There are variations of the prayer that show that it was treated as a talisman or a spell.

These are the formulas:

“If any person reads this prayer for days, the devil or the evil spirit will not touch him that day, and that person will have joy in his soul and heart. And if any person dies from this life, then hell will not accept his soul.”

“Even if a person reads this prayer for days and the devil does not touch him for days, a kindly person is tempted by laziness in his heart, or if a person ceases to live this life, then he will not receive power over his soul.”

“Keep the servant of God in troubles and in sorrows and in sorrows, at crossroads, on rivers, and in deserts, in warriors, in kings, and in princes, in nobles, and in people, and in all power.”

In modern versions they are omitted, but from them we understand that this prayer has nothing to do with Orthodoxy.
