In what cases do they pray to Sergius of Radonezh?
The Holy Fathers believe that a prayer to Saint Sergius of Radonezh, pronounced with pure and sincere intentions, is capable of reaching the Kingdom of Heaven and bringing results.
Usually, when they perform prayer in honor of St. Sergius, they ask for the following:
- healing of ailments of body and soul (we also recommend strong healing prayers);
- success in academic affairs;
- assistance in raising teenagers;
- getting an answer to a vital question;
- pacification of pride.
Often, students ask the holy elder for help on the eve of exams (you can also read the complete collection of prayers before the exam). Everyone knows the case when a young boy, the future Reverend Sergius, became proficient in literacy and other sciences. This example attracts both students and schoolchildren. Those who rely on support will receive it. We can say that a whole educational tradition has developed that is successfully passed from generation to generation.
The greatest power comes from reading a prayer in front of an icon. In Russia there are a huge number of churches dedicated to the saint. But if you want to receive the strongest support, pray near his relics located in the Trinity-Sergius Lavra in the city of Sergiev Posad.
Prayer
Oh, sacred head, reverend and God-bearing Father Sergius, by your prayer, and by faith and love, even for God, and by the purity of your heart, you were granted your soul on earth to the monastery of the Most Holy Trinity, and the angelic communion and the visitation of the Most Holy Theotokos, and the gift received by miraculous grace, but after your departure from earthly things, you draw closer to God and partake of heavenly powers; but also from us with the spirit of your love, and your honest relics, like a vessel of grace, full and overflowing, leaving us! Having great boldness towards the All-Merciful Master, pray to save His Servants, who believe in His grace in you and who come running to you with love. Ask us from our great God for every gift that is beneficial to everyone, observance of the immaculate faith, establishment of our cities, pacification of peace, deliverance from famine and destruction, preservation from the invasion of foreigners, consolation for the afflicted, healing for those who are sick, restoration for the fallen, restoration for those who are lost. there is truth and return of salvation, strengthening for those who strive, prosperity and blessing for those who do good in good deeds, education for infants, instruction for the young, admonition for the ignorant, protection for orphans and widows, those departing from this temporary life to eternal life, good preparation and guidance, those who have departed into blessed rest, and all of us your prayers for success vouchsafe on the day of the Last Judgment to be delivered from all parts of the world, to be on the right side of the country, and to hear that blessed voice of the Lord Christ: “Come, blessed of My Father, inherit the Kingdom prepared for you from the foundation of the world.” Amen.
Life
The Monk Sergius was born in the village of Varnitsa, near Rostov. The saint's parents, boyars Kirill and Maria, were pious people and were in the service of the Rostov princes. Even before the birth of the saint, the Lord showed a sign indicating that this would not be an ordinary person. Being pregnant, his mother was standing in church at the Sunday Liturgy when the baby cried out three times from the womb. Then Mary realized that the child she was carrying was chosen by God. Soon after the birth of Bartholomew—that was the saint’s name at birth—his mother noticed that he refused to breastfeed on Wednesdays and Fridays, as well as on those days when Mary ate meat. Then Mary gave up meat and the baby began to drink mother’s milk on all days except fasting days.
When the time came, his parents sent Bartholomew to learn to read and write. But school science was not given to the boy, despite all his efforts and diligence. He grieved a lot about his folly, begging the Lord to help him, which was not slow to happen.
One day, Bartholomew's parents' horses ran away and his father sent the boy to look for them. In the field, he saw a monk praying and approached him and told him about his problems with his studies, asking for prayers. The elder prayed and gave the youth a prosphora. Since the saint’s parents were hospitable people, Bartholomew began to beg the elder to visit their home. He did not refuse and they came together to the saint’s parents. Before the meal, the elder opened the book and ordered Bartholomew to read prayers. He was very embarrassed, and the parents hastened to explain to the guest that the boy could not read. But the elder insisted and Bartholomew took the book, crossed himself and began to read clearly and clearly. Since then, book wisdom began to come easily to him and he even surpassed his peers.
Having become impoverished, the saint's parents moved from Varnitsa to the village of Radonezh. Soon the pious young man began to express a desire to lead a monastic life. But his parents asked him not to leave them in his old age. Like an obedient son, Bartholomew remained with his parents and served them with all zeal. Soon Kirill and Maria took monastic vows at the Khotkovo Monastery, where they died.
After the death of his parents, Bartholomew and his older brother Stefan went to look for a deserted place. They settled in an impenetrable forest, where the Holy Trinity Lavra of St. Sergius now shines. But Stefan soon could not stand the harsh life and left, leaving the monk alone.
After a while, Abbot Mitrofan came to him, who tonsured the saint into monasticism with the name Sergius, and soon elevated him to the rank of priest. The news of the saint's exploits spread around the area and monks began to come to him. When there were already 12 people, the monk built a temple, cells and a fence. This is how the Trinity Monastery was founded.
During his earthly life, Saint Sergius set an example of meekness, humility and obedience. As abbot, he worked equally with the brethren, doing the most difficult work.
The saint was deeply revered by both ordinary people and princes and boyars. Grand Duke Dimitri Donskoy asked for his blessing for the battle with the Tatars. Having prayed, the Reverend blessed the prince, predicting victory for him, and gave him two warrior-monks - Peresvet and Oslyabya.
The saint knew about his death six months before it. Having transferred the abbess to his closest disciple, the Monk Nikon, he began to prepare for the transition to another world. After the death of the monk, his body was laid in the monastery church.
Now the incorruptible relics of the saint remain in a shrine under the canopy, in the Trinity Cathedral of the Sergius Lavra. Every day, in the morning, during the fraternal prayer service, the shrine is opened for veneration of the revealed relics.

Troparion to St. Sergius of Radonezh
Troparion, tone 4
An ascetic of virtues, as a true warrior of Christ God, you labored in great passion in the temporal life, in singing, vigils and fasting, and became your disciple: in the same way, the Most Holy Spirit dwelt in you, by whose action you are brightly adorned: but as having the boldness to Holy Trinity, remember the flock that you wisely gathered, and do not forget how you promised to visit your children, O Reverend Sergius, our father.
Troparion, tone 8
From your youth you received Christ in your soul, reverend, and most of all you desired to evade worldly rebellion: you courageously moved into the desert, and you raised the children of obedience in it, and you increased the fruits of humility. Thus, having given residence to the Trinity, you enlightened everyone with your miracles, those who come to you with faith, you gave healing to everyone abundantly, Our Father Sergius, pray to Christ God that He will save our souls.

Prayer to St. Sergius for the protection of the fatherland from infidels
This prayer is read at a time of danger to the state. It also helps save the lives of Russian soldiers on the battlefield.
“O heavenly citizen of Jerusalem, Reverend Father Sergius! Look upon us (names) graciously and lead those who are devoted to the earth to the heights of heaven. You are a mountain in Heaven; We are on earth, below, removed from you, not only by place, but by our sins and iniquities; but to you, as our kin, we resort and cry: teach us to walk in your way, enlighten us and guide us. It is characteristic of you, Our Father, to have compassion and love for mankind: living on earth, you should not only care about your own salvation, but also about all those who come to you. Your instructions were the reed of a scribe, a cursive writer, inscribing the verbs of life on everyone’s heart. You did not only heal bodily illnesses, but more than spiritual ones, an elegant physician appeared, and your whole holy life was a mirror of all virtues. Even though you were so holy, more holy than God, on earth: how much more are you now in Heaven! Today you stand before the Throne of the Unapproachable Light, and in it, like in a mirror, see all our needs and petitions; You are together with the Angels, rejoicing over the one sinner who repents. And God’s love for mankind is inexhaustible, and your boldness towards Him is great: do not stop crying to the Lord for us. Through your intercession, ask our All-Merciful God for the peace of His Church, under the sign of the militant Cross, agreement in faith and unity of wisdom, destruction of vanity and schism, affirmation in good deeds, healing for the sick, consolation for the sad, intercession for the offended, help for the needy. Do not disgrace us, who come to you with faith. Even though you are unworthy of such a father and intercessor, you, an imitator of God’s love for mankind, made us worthy by turning from evil deeds to good living. All God-enlightened Russia, filled with your miracles and blessed by your mercies, confesses you to be their patron and intercessor. Show your ancient mercies, and those whom you helped your father, do not reject us, their children, who are marching towards you in their footsteps. We believe that you are present with us in spirit. Where the Lord is, as His word teaches us, there His servant will be. You are a faithful servant of the Lord, and I exist everywhere with God, you are in Him, and He is in you, and moreover, you are with us in body. Behold your incorruptible and life-giving relics, like a priceless treasure, may God grant us miracles. Before them, as I live for you, we fall down and pray: accept our prayers and offer them on the altar of God’s mercy, so that we may receive grace from you and timely help in our needs. Strengthen us, the faint-hearted, and confirm us in the faith, so that we undoubtedly hope to receive all the good things from the mercy of the Master through your prayers. Do not cease to rule your spiritual flock, gathered by you, with the rod of spiritual wisdom: help those who struggle, raise up the weakened, hasten to bear the yoke of Christ in complacency and patience, and guide us all in peace and repentance, end our lives and settle with hope in the blessed bosom of Abraham, where you now rest joyfully after your labors and struggles, glorifying with all the saints God, glorified in the Trinity, the Father, and the Son, and the Holy Spirit. Amen".
