Prayers before the icon of the Mother of God “Deliverer from Troubles”

History of the icon

Celebration date:

  • April 30
  • October 30

The image begins its history in 1841; it was from this year that believers began to glorify it. They say that thanks to her, one Greek settlement got rid of a locust invasion. After such a miracle, the Mother of God began to attract many pilgrims and pilgrims, but the guardian of the shrine categorically did not like this. And Elder Martinian transported the image to Athos, where he settled in the monastery of St. Panteleimon. But since 1889, the icon of the Mother of God “Deliverer from Troubles” has been located in Russia, namely in the Caucasus in the New Athos Simon-Kananitskaya monastery.

The image was brought by Alexander III. According to legend, the train on which the royal family was traveling met with a disaster. But all members of the clan were not harmed. All miracles were associated with the face of the Virgin Mary.

In ancient times, prayers were read before the icon of the Mother of God “Deliverer from Troubles” for salvation and healing, from the invasion of the same locusts, during disasters and catastrophes, and for solving problems and everyday difficulties.

Icon of the Mother of God

Deliverance from the troubles of those suffering

Celebration of All Saints' Week

More than two centuries ago, a peasant Fedot Alekseevich Obukhov lived in the village of Bor. He was a pious man who loved to donate money to decorate his native church. One day, on the day of the Epiphany, on the way from the city of Bolkhov, he was overtaken by a terrible blizzard with severe frost. Soon the road was completely covered with snow. The horse was exhausted and stopped at an impassable ravine. In the cold, Obukhov was completely chilled. Seeing no means of salvation, he unharnessed his horse, wrapped himself up, lay down in the sleigh and began to fall asleep, not realizing that he was freezing. But even in these terrible moments, he managed to pray to the Mother of God, mentally vowing to paint Her icon “Seeking the Lost.” In a neighboring village there lived a peasant, a friend of Obukhov. And then, in the howling of the blizzard, he suddenly heard someone’s voice under the window: “Take it.” Leaving the house, he saw his old friend Fedot Obukhov in the sleigh. Upon recovery, Obukhov immediately began to fulfill his vow, ordering the painter the icon of the Mother of God “Seeking the Lost.” When the icon was ready, he first brought it to his parental home, and from there “carried it on his head to his native church. The Bor icon became famous for its grace-filled signs and wonders. After some time, other images of “Recovery of the Dead” became known in Russia.

This icon of the Most Holy Theotokos is located in the St. Nicholas Arzamas Convent. The icon updates itself. According to the sisters of the monastery where she is located: “This miracle “began to happen” already in 1997. The sisters remember that it was then that a light spot appeared on the completely blackened icon, like a ray of sunlight highlighting a small oval part of the icon measuring 10-15 cm. It was imprinted on the neck of the Mother of God and the hand of the Infant Savior touching it. The sisters remembered that it was in the middle of the summer of 2000 that this “solar glow” began to rapidly increase. And - lo and behold! It was as if someone, invisible to us, was removing all this blackness in thin layers, like scales. The face of the Savior and the face of the Mother of God gradually became clear. The royal crown on the head of the Queen of Heaven is already visible, the blessing hand of the Savior, His legs resting on the right hand of His Mother, the colors of the clothes are determined. Moreover, everything did not appear evenly and smoothly, as a human hand would do, but precisely in such a way that it was obvious, joyful, and comforting. The name of the icon was illegible. One autumn, a Riga nun came and, looking at the icon, said with joy and trepidation that Angels were cleaning it. She was the first to allegedly determine the name of the icon - “Deliverance from the troubles of the suffering.” But only in the summer of 2001 we were able to reliably determine the name of the image based on its already significantly cleared details.”

Creed

About those suffering in prison

For those suffering who are in prison for guilt or without guilt, they turn to the Most Holy Theotokos for help, calling on Her icon “Seeking the Lost” or “Deliverance from the Troubles of the Suffering.”

Prayer to the Most Holy Theotokos (on behalf of the sufferer)

Zealous Intercessor, Compassionate Mother of the Lord, I come running to You, the accursed one and the most sinful person above all; Hear the voice of my prayer, and hear my cry and groaning. For my iniquities have exceeded my head, and I, like a ship in the abyss, am plunging into the sea of my sins. But You, All-Good and Merciful Lady, do not despise me, who is desperate and perishing in sins; have mercy on me, who repent of my evil deeds, and turn my lost, cursed soul to the right path. On You, my Lady Theotokos, I place all my hope. Thou, Mother of God, preserve and keep me under Thy roof, now and ever and unto ages of ages. Amen.

One should pray for those who suffer with the reading of the Gospel, reading it several times daily (John VIII, 31-36).

In addition, those who wish to pray for prisoners in a special way should order special prayer services from the clergy. The Russian people called all prisoners in prison unfortunate. Our ancestors observed the custom, especially in the evening and on the very days of great holidays, of visiting dungeons, ransoming debtors and giving alms to prisoners. They pray to the Great Martyr Anastasia for deliverance from imprisonment (December 22/January 4). St. Anastasia earned herself the name of the Pattern Maker, since through her many labors she freed many suffering Christians from bonds. She herself suffered home confinement from her cruel husband, and most importantly, she devoted herself to easing the fate of the prisoners: she brought food, drink and clothing to the dungeons, bandaged wounds, and with money bought for the prisoners relief from strictures. For this she was sentenced to martyrdom: she spent 60 days in prison without food and was subjected to severe torture. She was supposed to be drowned along with other prisoners. Miraculously saved, according to the second verdict, she was stretched crosswise between four pillars above the fire. Anastasia suffered martyrdom around 304. Her relics are located on the holy Mount Athos.

Prayer to the Great Martyr Anastasia, called the Pattern Maker

Oh, long-suffering and wise great martyr of Christ Anastasia! You stand with your soul in heaven at the throne of the Lord, and on earth, by the grace given to you, you perform various healings: look mercifully at the people who are present and those praying before your relics, asking for your help: extend your holy prayers to the Lord for us, and ask us for forgiveness our sins, healing for the sick, quick help for the grieving: pray to the Lord to give us all a Christian death and a good answer at His Last Judgment, so that we may be worthy with you to glorify the Father and the Son and the Holy Spirit forever and ever. Amen.

For those suffering who are in prison for guilt and without guilt, prayers are read to St. Peter of Athos (June 12/25). Peter of Athos was a military leader. He was captured during the war. He languished long and hard in captivity of his enemies. First, the prisoner asked St. Nicholas the Wonderworker for help. Saint Nicholas appeared to him, however, and taught him to pray to the righteous Simeon the God-Receiver. It’s probably like this: whoever was released himself and who said, “Now you are releasing your servant...”, he was given God’s grace to set others free as well.

Prayer to St. Peter of Athos

Troparion

You left the world, Peter, the Lord for your sake and took the cross on your frame, you reached Mount Athos, like Elijah the Tishbite of old. And having remained in it with fasting, and prayers, and vigil, making God merciful, and offering the Most Pure Theotokos the Prayer Book, for this reason we cry out to you: pray to Christ God that he may save our souls.

Kontakion

Having removed yourself from human cohabitation in stone caves and crevices, you lived with Divine desire and love, Peter, your Lord, you received a crown from the Worthless One. Pray continually for our salvation.

Prayer to the Righteous Simeon the God-Receiving

Oh, great servant of God, God-receptive Simeon! Standing before the throne of the great King and our God Jesus Christ, we have great boldness towards Him, and rush into our arms for the sake of salvation. To you, as a powerful intercessor and a strong prayer book for us, we, sinners and unworthy, come running, Pray for His Goodness, as if He would turn away His anger from us, righteously driven by our deeds against us, and despising our countless sins; He will turn us to the path of repentance and establish us on the path of His commandments. Protect our life in peace with your prayers, and ask for good haste in all good things, granting us everything we need for life and piety. Just as in ancient times Great Novograd, by the appearance of your miraculous icon, delivered us from the destruction of mortals, so now we and all the cities and villages of our country from all misfortunes and misfortunes and vain deaths through your intercession, and from all enemies, visible and invisible, with your protection. Let us live a quiet and silent life in all piety and purity, and, having passed this temporary life in the world, we will achieve eternal peace, where we will be made worthy of the Heavenly Kingdom of Christ our God. To Him all glory is due, together with the Father and His Most Holy Spirit, now and ever and forever. Amen.

History of the Holy Face

A very interesting and mysterious story is connected with the face of “Deliverance from the troubles of the afflicted”. In 1997, two women arrived in Arzamas. In the hands of one of them was a small board, darkened with time. It was impossible to make out what was depicted on it.

The travelers were heading to the St. Nicholas Monastery on Cathedral Square. There they planned to give the board to the abbots, since it very vaguely resembled an icon.

The church servants did not recognize what kind of image it was, so they ordered it to be taken to a special storage room for lists that could not be identified. A year later, one of the abbess of this convent saw a wondrous dream in which the Mother of God appeared to her and said that her image was hidden in the monastery.

After waking up, the abbess immediately went to the storeroom, where she saw that board. She immediately called all the nuns and told them to sincerely pray to the face, because the Virgin Mary was depicted on it.

So they prayed for about a month, until the first miracle happened: enlightenment appeared in the middle of the icon, which slightly revealed the face of the Mother of God. Since then, not only the monastery ministers, but also ordinary people constantly pray near the face.

In 2001, the face of the Mother of God brightened. But the blackness had not yet faded, so no one could say the name. One day a delegation from the Riga convent came to this monastery. One of the nuns said that the name of this icon is “Deliverance from the troubles of the suffering.”

Exactly a year after these events, the black spots left the face, revealing to the world the name of the icon of the Most Holy Mary. Since then, many believers specially come to Arzamas to pray to the miraculous icon.

It depicts the Virgin Mary holding her Child in her arms. On her head is a crown, as a sign that she is the Queen of the Heavenly Kingdom.

This icon has several days when it is officially venerated:

  • April 4 was the very first official holiday, but in 1866 it was canceled due to the attack on the ruler Alexander I: although the emperor escaped, the authorities decided that it would be better to move the celebration of the icon’s day to another date;
  • October 17 was not chosen by chance; on this day a miracle occurred, which is attributed to the Mother of God: on this day there was a terrible accident that could have killed the imperial family, but no one died;
  • April 30 and October 30 - these dates were chosen according to the new style.
