What does the “Vladimir” Icon of the Mother of God look like? Photo download for free
According to legend, the author of this image is Luke (the apostle and evangelist, companion of the Apostle Paul), but not directly, but indirectly, since it was from the image of the Virgin Mary that he painted that numerous copies (copies that were made earlier) have reached us. The first mentions go back to the 5th century AD. e., when the face of the Mother of God came to Constantinople. Its original storage location would be Israel.
Later (in the 12th century) the image came to Rus'. It was a gift from the Byzantine ruler to Prince Mstislav Vladimirovich. Since then, this image of the Mother of God has been moved many times: to Vladimir-on-Klyazma, where the face received its current name; The icon came into the possession of Yaropolk Rostislavovich, then Gleb of Ryazan. Ultimately, she returned to Vladimir again. However, in the middle of the 13th century, the temple where the face of the Lady Holy Virgin was kept was plundered, the shrine lost its expensive decoration (frame), but was preserved.
After restoration, the icon was moved to Moscow, where one of the miracles happened: in the 14th century it saved Tamerlane and his troops, then for unknown reasons they changed direction, the soldiers did not reach the capital. Where they met the image of the holy face of the Mother of God, the Sretensky Monastery was built. Little is known about further movements. It was assumed that the icon was returned to Vladimir. Already in the 15th century, it was again moved to Moscow, where the face of the Saint helped save Russia from the invasion of the Mongol-Tatars.
Thanks to its miraculous properties
she was left in the capital and placed in the Kremlin church.
Gradually, the face of the Mother of God in this image became patronizing: first for the city of Vladimir (12th century), then for all of Russia. The icon was considered the main shrine of the country. Next to her the sovereigns were crowned kings. Due to the fact that the image became the main shrine, it was used in the election of clergy of the highest ranks. The icons received expensive decorations - frames made of gold and silver (XV-XVI centuries). Now it is kept in the temple-museum at the Tretyakov Gallery.
To recognize the icon yourself, it is recommended to learn more about the features of the face. Thus, the image is classified as a special iconographic type called “Tenderness”. And indeed, anyone who carefully examines the details will discover an unusual side - the tenderness that is so subtly noted between mother and son, and conveyed when painting the icon. So, you can see that the Son of God has fallen to the cheek of the Mother of God, and she is holding him in her arms (Jesus is depicted at an early age).
Mary's gaze is turned to the one praying, while grief is visible
The mother foresaw the fate of her son, which saddens her.
The Mother of God holds the Son of God with her right hand and also touches him with her left. Jesus himself hugs Mary on the neck; one more detail can be noticed - the left leg of the Son of God protrudes from under the robes (the foot is visible).
This icon has other differences. So, on the reverse side, marks are also visible: the throne and instruments of the passions that brought physical suffering to Christ are depicted. However, it was presumably completed later than the face of the Mother of God was painted.
The Vladimir Icon (Theotokos) dates back to the 12th century. Its reverse side is shrouded in mystery - it is still unknown who, when and why painted the images on it. Thus, during research at the end of the 20th century, it was confirmed that the icon was double-sided, which was due to the same shape of some elements. However, already in 2013, with the help of newer technologies, another image was discovered on the back. This is a certain saint, they assume that the Wonderworker Nicholas.

The history of the appearance of the Akathist to the Vladimir Icon
The first akathist was written in honor of the Mother of God, who saved Constantinople from an enemy siege in the 7th century. The persecution of Christians gave impetus to the development of the genre of church chants.
Akathist is a song of praise, a special type of prayer with which one addresses the Lord, the Mother of God, and the holy saints. The anthem is performed standing, most often at home. The original akathist became an example to follow when composing subsequent hymns of praise.
From Greece, the tradition of writing hymns passed to Eastern European Orthodox countries. In the Russian Orthodox tradition, it was customary to write akathists to every saint glorified by the church. Any Orthodox Christian could become a hymnographer.
The text of the prayer for worship was submitted for consideration to the Holy Synod, where it was censored and received permission/prohibition for further use in liturgical practice.
In the Russian Orthodox Church, the compilers of akathists were (XVII century):
- Sylvester Medvedev, monk;
- Prince Shakhovsky S.I.;
- Archimandrite Joasaph.
Vladimir iconography of the Mother of God - a copy of the image of the Mother of God, made by the Apostle Luke. In 1131, Prince Mstislav received it as a gift from the Patriarch of Constantinople. Until 1155, the holy image was in the Vyshgorod monastery, and then transferred to the Assumption Cathedral in the city of Vladimir. From that time on, the icon received the name Vladimir.
At the end of the 14th century, the Vladimir Icon became first a Moscow and then an all-Russian shrine. At the holy image in the Assumption Church of the Kremlin they were crowned kings and confirmed in the rank of metropolitans and patriarchs. Works dedicated to the icon and its miracles appeared in ancient Russian literature.
Akathistographers to the images of the Mother of God were (late 19th, early 20th centuries):
- Professor of the Moscow Theological Academy P. S. Kazansky (“Joy to All Who Sorrow”, “Kazan”);
- writer A.F. Kovalevsky (“The Burning Bush”, “Smolenskaya” and “Tolgskaya”, “Quick to Hear”);
- Metropolitan Sergius (“Vladimirskaya”).
Metropolitan Sergius (in the world I.N. Stragorodsky) was born in 1867 in the family of an archpriest. Received spiritual education. In 1890 he was tonsured a monk. After 4 years, he was elevated to the rank of archimandrite and received a master's degree in theology.
Before the revolution he held the rank of bishop:
- Yamburgsky;
- Finnish and Vyborg;
- Vladimirsky Shuisky.
The clergyman was repeatedly arrested for opposing the authorities. In November 1926, he was taken into custody on charges of connections with the Russian Church Abroad and preparations for the illegal election of a patriarch. While in prison, he was engaged in composing theological works and religious texts. During this period (at the beginning of 1927), an akathist to the holy image of the Vladimir Mother of God was compiled.
Since the 70s of the 20th century, the publication of collections of akathists began, which included well-known and canonized texts. The Akathist of Metropolitan Sergius (Stragorodsky) was included in the collection in 1981.
Prayer before the Vladimir icon - how to read correctly?
It is important to remember that the praise of the Mother of God, like other Saints, should not exceed in strength the veneration of Christ, the Lord our God. For this reason, you must first turn to the Almighty. To do this, you should find a suitable prayer in the prayer book; it is also permissible to read “Our Father,” since this is the main sacred text of the Orthodox religion. If it is not possible to read it in the collection, you can find it online; an alternative option is to print the text. This will allow you to always carry it with you.
When the turn comes to turn to the Mother of God, this should be done directly in front of the Vladimir Icon. If it is not possible to visit a holy place (temple, monastery, where lists are kept in different cities), you can ask for help and healing from the Virgin, depicted on a small icon from the home collection.
It is recommended to concentrate on the prayer of the Mother of God of Vladimir.
You should not be distracted, because in this case faith is weakened. In addition, prayer texts cannot be spoken automatically. In such conditions it will not be possible to get help. If you pray without feeling, it is equivalent to witchcraft, because sacred words are used for self-interest. Moreover, there is no urgent need to read the prayer to the Mother of God of Vladimir 3, 9, 40 or more times. The frequency of reading is determined individually - as much as the soul requires.
How to read and what they pray to the Most Holy Theotokos before the shrine
The word “akathist” translated from Greek means a hymn during which one does not sit; accordingly, in the absence of any bodily infirmities, such a prayer must be performed while standing in front of the image. According to pious Christian tradition, a lamp or candle should also be lit. The Akathist can be read after the morning or evening rule, or separately, preceding it with the usual Beginning (“To the Heavenly King”, “The Trisagion according to Our Father”).
Any prayer, including the singing of the akathist, must be performed with attention, putting aside worldly thoughts for a while.
Saint Ignatius Brianchaninov taught about prayer as follows: “The effect on the soul of prolonged but inattentive prayer is similar to the effect of heavy rain on an iron roof, from which all the water runs off, no matter how much it spills, without producing any effect on the roof.”
What do they pray for in front of the Vladimir Icon? First of all, it is important to remember that the strict comparison of a specific petition with a specific icon is more like a magical ritual than an act of trust and love. One and the same Lady, our Mother of God, looks at us from each of Her icons. Therefore, your own heart can best tell you the content of your prayer. It can be:
- diseases, especially of the cardiovascular system;
- physical and mental infirmities;
- everyday, material hardships;
- petitions for peace and an end to strife;
- family conflicts;
- difficulties in raising children;
- other sorrows - in a word, everything that torments and worries.
Sincere, heartfelt questioning will always be heard according to the word of the Lord:
“And whatever you ask in prayer in faith, you will receive.” (Matt. 21,22)
At all times, Christians turned to the Mother of God for help, as the closest Intercessor for us sinners before the Lord. Countless times She has covered and continues to cover our earthly troubles with Her omophorion and love for Her children, Christians.
“The Most Holy Theotokos rejoices when we pray to Her, read akathists and canons, for she sees the pure love of Her children, who devote themselves to Her and glorify Her.” - Elder Paisiy Svyatogorets instructs.
And the Queen of Heaven in return prays for everyone who needs Her protection, so we should more often turn our heartfelt gaze to Her. After all, according to the well-known troparion, the Most Pure One “At the Dormition you did not forsake the world...”

To whom shall we resort in our sorrow, if not to You, Queen of Heaven?
Who will receive our crying and sighing, if not You, Most Immaculate, the hope of Christians and refuge for us sinners?
Who is in mercy more than You?
Incline Your ear to us, Lady, Mother of our God, and do not despise those who require Your help: hear our groaning, strengthen us sinners, enlighten and teach us, O Queen of Heaven, and do not depart from us, Thy servant, Lady, for our grumbling, but Be our Mother and Intercessor, and entrust us to the merciful protection of Your Son.

Rejoice, indestructible wall; Rejoice, Refuge for all who trust in Thee. Rejoice, you who preserved your icon intact in the flames; Rejoice, you who left it for us as a consolation and salvation. Rejoice, for You are our Protection; Rejoice, for You are the constant joy of all the pious. Rejoice, Most Pure One, flowing mercy to us from Your icon. Kontakion 7 Although Grand Duke Vasily sought protection for his capital city, he commanded to bring Your Vladimir Icon to Moscow. And at the meeting of her, the prince and saint of Moscow Cyprian zealously went with the consecrated Council and the whole multitude of people, bowing to the ground before her, as if You, the Most Pure One, was coming to them, calling to You: “O Mother of God, save the Russian land,” together and better than God: Alleluia. Ikos 7 You created a new sign, O Immaculate One, on the day of the celebration of the meeting of Your Icon of Vladimir in Moscow: in a terrible vision, like an omnipotent Queen, with many armies of Heaven, you appeared with the saints of Moscow to the wicked Hagaryan Khan and commanded you to depart from the borders of the Russian land. Then Your faithful people, having seen the enemy in shame and fleeing, will greet You with joy: Rejoice, invincible victory; Rejoice, Queen of Heavenly Powers. Rejoice, terrible disgrace of the enemy; Rejoice, unexpected joy of Your servants. Rejoice, Hope of all who are deprived of hope; Rejoice, salvation to those who have descended into the depths of hell. Rejoice, who made Moscow glad with the coming of Your icon; Rejoice, for Thy intercession did not leave the city of Vladimir. Rejoice, Most Pure One, flowing mercy to us from Your icon. Kontakion 8 The strange victory through Your omnipotent help, O Lady, accomplished without battle, is still brightly glorified by the Orthodox Church. We celebrate the meeting of Your icon in Vladimir and call together all Your faithful children to gratefully confess Your mercies, and to sing to Your Son and God: Alleluia. Ikos 8 God sanctify all of You, Most Immaculate, and as His Mother, He has given us all a ready refuge and warm cover. Moreover, from the least of the earth and the unknown, the city of Moscow, blessed by You, has been magnified, piously venerating Your icon; For all the Russian tribes have been gathered together and their region over the surrounding languages from sea to sea and even to the ends of the earth, spreading the faith of Christ to everyone, crying out to you: Rejoice, our lands have been taken away; Rejoice, confirmation of the Church. Rejoice, our prayer books are praised. Rejoice, salvation of Your people; Rejoice, our terrifying enemies. Rejoice, thou who driveth away the armies of strangers far away. Rejoice, for through You Orthodox Rus' is supported; Rejoice, for in You the Christian race boasts. Rejoice, Most Pure One, flowing mercy to us from Your icon. Kontakion 9 Every angelic nature praises You, the Mother of God, who stands before the throne of Your Son and prays for our country and all Christians. We, Your people, understanding the effect of Your prayers, flow to Your miraculous icon with love and diligently cry out to God: Alleluia. Ikos 9 Earthly art is not sufficient to praise Thee, Most Holy All-Immaculate, and to count Thy miracles in the image, in whose image the Orthodox Church is magnified, our cities are established and all Christians are divinely rejoiced. Moreover, for Thy great love for us and all Thy mercy, accept from us this song of praise: Rejoice, Thou who have shone forth in the Council of Saints in our country, surrounded and glorified; Rejoice, you who accept the prayers of our representatives, the Russian miracle workers. Rejoice, you who propitiate God through Your intercession for us; Rejoice, ever overshadowing us with Your honest protection. Rejoice, O glorious Protectress of our country; Rejoice, you who call upon You as an ambulance Helper. Rejoice, grace-filled strengthening of those who labor; Rejoice, undoubted salvation for repentant sinners. Rejoice, Most Pure One, flowing mercy to us from Your icon. Kontakion 10 Seeking salvation, we resort to You, Merciful Mother, and, Your miraculous icon is now present, all Your mercies, revealed by our Father, we remember with love. May our hope in You not be in vain, O Lady, and have mercy on our weakness and save those who cry to God: Alleluia. Ikos 10 You are the wall and intercession of all those who come to You with faith, O All-Blessed Youth, for You have always shown Your mercy to the Christian race, and You have shown many and varied benefits to our Father, from the invasion of foreigners and from all misfortunes and needs of those who have delivered. Do not be impoverished even now, Lady, quenching the fierce rebellions of sin against us and the cloud of temptations of marriage, for you to sing with skill: Rejoice, Mother of God, extending maternal love to us sinners; Rejoice, by Your power you fill our weakness. Rejoice, you who teach us to understand the mercy of God; Rejoice, you who stir us up to works of mercy. Rejoice, you who put the fear of God in the hearts of the faithful; Rejoice, calling sinners to repentance. Rejoice, long-suffering to our inattention; Rejoice, you who awaken us from the sleep of laziness. Rejoice, Most Pure One, flowing mercy to us from Your icon. Kontakion 11 Singing praise, the people of Muscovy hastened, Thy salvation was once improved: having appeared from above, with luminous clothing, Thy temple and the city of Moscow were protected by Thy robe from the fire. Abid, O All-Powerful One, from this place even now, and grant that we may see Your deliverance, so that we may sing with joy: Alleluia. Ikos 11 The light of joy shone forth, O Lady, and in the days of Thou, when by the sight of God the ancient beauty of the church returned to us and the Holy Council returned to the city of Moscow of the Patriarch, and established for our whole country a single shepherd and prayer book. But You, Most Pure One, from Your Vladimir Icon have granted the lot of this High Priesthood to Your chosen one, so that the scattered sheep of the verbal flock may be gathered back into one by the Russian Church. For this reason we cry to You: Rejoice, joy of those who mourn; Rejoice, O overwhelmed Refuge. Rejoice, you who did not leave us in adversity; Rejoice, for in our humiliation the light of hope has shone for us. Rejoice, you who have looked upon the humble; Rejoice, you who have exalted the lowliest. Rejoice, Praise for our Church: Rejoice for the joy of Your people. Rejoice, Most Pure One, flowing mercy to us from Your icon. Kontakion 12 Do not take Thy grace from us, O Source of mercy, as in the days of hard times of our saints Job and Hermogenes Thou didst hear the Russian land from its final plunder, and Thou didst save the Orthodox faith in it from destruction, so that through Thy deliverance we may sing to God: Alleluia. Ikos 12 Singing Thy innumerable mercies, revealed to our generation from the ancient years and not fading to this day, we praise Thee, Most Pure One, as our vigilant Guardian and intercession, and Thy Motherly love for the flock of Thy Son, leading, with boldness, even though we are unworthy servants, we cry To you: Rejoice, you who loved Orthodox Rus'; Rejoice, you who established the true faith in her. Rejoice, thou who preserved our fathers in piety; Rejoice, and you did not reject our infirmity. Rejoice, our unshakable affirmation; Rejoice, our shameless Hope. Rejoice, our warm prayer book; Rejoice, zealous Intercessor. Rejoice, Most Pure One, flowing mercy to us from Your icon. Kontakion 13 O All-Singing Mother, All-Merciful Intercessor, Virgin Theotokos, by Your usual mercy we accept this little prayer of ours, as in ancient times, so now have mercy on our Russian land and deliver Your servants from all troubles who cry out for You: Alleluia. (This kontakion is read three times, then ikos 1 and kontakion 1)
“My prayer to the Mother of God for the children”
“Children for me were an unattainable dream. I always wanted to have a family, but things didn’t work out. She did get married, and even successfully on all counts. Only in marriage there is no baby. For many years now I have been turning around at children crying on the street, playing with my friends’ children - it’s all hard. Of course, like many, she came to God, although she was always a believer, but not a church member. And then, as if something pulled me. I believed that the Lord would help.
Anastasia, 38 years old, Tula
I started going to one icon in our church. It turned out to be Vladimirskaya (one of the lists), as the priest told me. Literally every day I came after work in the evening, stopped in front of her, prayed first, and then talked about my sorrows (mentally). I asked her for help so that my husband and I could have our own child.
I had this kind of communication with the Virgin for a long time, about 4 years. And even on weekends I went to the temple, I was drawn there - it was the only place where my soul was not torn. It was so calm there, it was very nice. I don’t know what influenced it: whether it was this, or maybe another treatment (but I don’t think so, I’m inclined to believe that God helped), but now I’m pregnant. I believe that a daughter will appear, I will love any of her, even with shortcomings. I thank the Lord and the Virgin for everything.”
