Islam and paganism dominated in Kazan at that time. Believers sought to attract lost people to Christianity. However, the most powerful impact was made by God's miracle - the appearance of the icon of the Virgin Mary. This is an ancient image that was lost under the ashes during a large fire that engulfed a significant part of the city of Kazan. The face of the Mother of God was considered destroyed. The Great Fire in Kazan was a sign of the end of the dominance of Islam in these territories.

And so it happened: when the fire destroyed a significant part of the city, the first miracle soon happened - the Mother of God appeared to a girl named Matrona, whose father was building a house nearby. She ordered to dig up the icon, which was hidden under the thickness of the earth. At one time, it was buried there by the first Orthodox Christians, persecuted by Muslims. Now the icon had to be dug up, but no one believed Matrona. As a result, the Virgin Mary appeared 2 more times. In total, Matrona saw the face of the Mother of God three times.

The miraculous discovery of a shrine

Residents of the city of Kazan experienced 1579 very hard. A severe fire that started in a local church spread to residential areas of the city and the Kremlin. Many families were left homeless and grief-stricken people began to doubt the existence of Christ and the Orthodox faith. But it was hot outside and craftsmen began to restore homes.

Then the mother, taking her daughter by the hand, went to the ashes and in the indicated place, under the rubble, deep in the ground, she discovered the icon. Having cleared it of dust and dirt, the woman, amazed by the miracle, saw that the Mother of God’s face was absolutely intact and had not even lost its color.

Local residents immediately realized that the icon was miraculous. A couple of blind men volunteered to take it to the local temple. When they approached the church doors, their joy knew no bounds - they suddenly received their sight! This incident was the first in a huge string of miracles. From that moment on, the prayer of Our Lady of Kazan sounded incessantly, and people in a line reached out to the icon and, according to their faith, began to receive what they asked for.

Ivan the Terrible, having learned about the miracles taking place, ordered a cathedral to be built at the site of the discovery of the holy face and a women's monastic monastery to be created. According to legend, its first nuns were the girl Matrona herself and her mother. I went to see off the face of the Mother of God, because I couldn’t get married for a long time. All the wrong men came across. Many will now say, well, after the Procession she found her betrothed, but no. I will answer the skeptics that this was only the very beginning of my introduction to the Divine.

Brief history of the icon

The Kazan Icon, together with a prayer to the Mother of God, appeared to believers in the most miraculous way. This happened when a forest caught fire in the city of Kazan. Then the Most Holy Virgin Mary came to a very young girl - the daughter of a local merchant - in a dream, and told her where the icon was kept. The girl immediately told this story to her parents, but they did not believe her, citing a childhood fantasy.

However, the dream was repeated again and again, until the girl’s mother and father went and found the Kazan Icon with a prayer to the Mother of God in the place where the fire occurred. The face of Saint Mary remained intact, all colors were preserved. They placed the image in the Church of St. Nicholas the Wonderworker.

The revered and miraculous Kazan shrine, along with a prayer to the Mother of God, was written off several times. The first - in the 16th century, the second - in the 17th. In the 20th century, the icon was stolen. To this day, no one knows where she went.

The oldest list dates back to the beginning of the 16th century and is kept in the Tretyakov Gallery. But most of all, the list that resembles a real Shrine is located in St. Petersburg in the Cathedral of Prince Vladimir.
