Prayers before the icon of the Most Holy Theotokos “Theodorovskaya”

Prayer before the icon of Our Lady of Theodore

Each type of icon of the Mother of God, in addition to its general meaning as an image of the Virgin Mary, also has a special meaning and characteristic.
The prayer to the icon of the Mother of God of Fedorov is intended to help young couples who have just cemented (or expressed such a desire) their union, as well as women (men) in solving problems of procreation. The shrine, kept in the city of Kostroma, has an intricate and rich history, the details of which are little known. But it deserves attention, confirming the very fact of existence of the divine will.

The icon was painted by Saint Luke - the apostle of Christ and the first icon painter, whose brush includes many faces of the Mother of God - but how the creation got to Russia remains the greatest mystery.

There is documentary evidence that already in the 12th century. The icon, endowed with miraculous powers, was visited by pilgrims in a chapel near the small settlement of Gorodets. A legend is also connected with this fact that the icon was allegedly made to order by Prince Andrei Bogolyubsky of Vyshgorod in 1164.

After the burning of the settlement, the icon strangely disappeared and reappeared in the city of Kostroma only a century and a half later: it was seen hanging over a tree branch (just in the air!) by the hunting Prince Vasily of Kostroma, known among the people for his piety and righteousness. The Fedorov shrine began to be called because for a long time it was kept in the church of the Great Martyr Stratilates, called Fedor.

Now the image occupies a place of honor among the sacred images of the Epiphany-Anastasinsky Monastery in Kostroma, and many lists (copies) are distributed throughout the cities and villages of Orthodox Rus' and other Slavic states. One of these lists, written by nun Martha in the 19th century, is located in Fedorovsky Gorodets (monastery) of Tsarskoye Selo. This image is famous throughout the Orthodox world because in 1994 (on the day the remains of Prince Mikhail Romanov, killed in 1918, were interred), it cast myrrh, and this miracle lasted for 4 days.

Icon Feodorovskaya: who prays

Confessors advise reading the prayer of the Mother of God of Feodorovskaya to people who are looking for help in matters of finding family well-being and the happiness of childbearing. The Feodorovskaya Mother of God is considered the patroness of brides and the keeper of the family hearth.

She helps single girls and women who have problems communicating with the opposite sex; men suffering from sexual impotence; women who have problems conceiving, as well as pregnant women during pregnancy and difficult childbirth.

Rules for reading prayer

The Feodorovskaya Mother of God shows miracles to those who offer prayers with sincere faith before her icon

There is no need for fasting, candles and divine services; it is important that a person is determined to receive the help of the Most Holy One and believes in a favorable outcome of upcoming events

If a young woman is predicted to have a difficult birth or has to undergo a caesarean section, the main thing that is required is the calmness of the woman in labor. On the day of childbirth or a scheduled operation, the expectant mother reads a prayer in solitude, preferably several times, so that all bad thoughts go away. It’s good if loved ones go to church and also pray for the health of the woman and her baby.

Patroness Fedorovskaya stands for strong family ties and will never leave those asking for help in trouble.

One comment

I don’t know if it’s a coincidence or not, but after praying to this icon I got married! I didn’t know the truth about the rules that are described here before (But now I will definitely take this into account! Because I really want a baby) And the icon, by the way, is very beautiful! She really attracts you! Only it has such an effect on me) Probably, it really has great power)

Veneration of the Theodore Icon of the Blessed Virgin Mary

In 1613, the Zemsky Sobor elected Mikhail Romanov (1596-1645) to the throne, which was confirmed by the final document - the Council Oath. After this, an embassy was appointed from Moscow to the Kostroma Ipatiev Monastery, where Mikhail Fedorovich lived with his mother, nun Martha (d. 1631).

The embassy was headed by the Ryazan Archbishop Theodorit (1551-1617), the cellarer of the Trinity-Sergius Monastery Abrahamy Palitsyn (d. 1625/1626/1627) and the boyar Theodore Ivanovich Sheremetev (d. 1650). On March 14 (O.S.), the embassy was received by Mikhail Romanov and his mother at the Ipatiev Monastery . Both Mikhail Romanov and his mother initially refused the throne, but as a result of persuasion they agreed. According to Patriarch Filaret :

On that day there was great joy in Kostroma, and a celebration was held for the miraculous icon of the Most Pure Theotokos of Feodorov.

This day became the day of celebration of the icon, which is celebrated in our time. Some historians claim that the nun Martha blessed her son with the Theodore Icon of the Mother of God when he was elected to the kingdom. However, cellarer Abraham Palitsyn, a participant in those events, does not mention this icon in his “Legend”. He writes that when the nun Martha and her son Michael refused for a long time the offer to take the royal throne, then the archbishop “... took up on his hand the wonder-working icon of the image of the Most Holy Theotokos, which was painted by Metropolitan Peter, and the Trinity cellarer, Elder Avramey, took up the image of the great wonder-workers Peter and Alexy and Jonah, and brought it before the empress.”

Mikhail Romanov took the copy of the icon with him to Moscow and placed it in the court church of the Nativity of the Virgin Mary “on Senya”. In 1618, he sent decorations for the icon to Kostroma, and in 1636, at the direction of the tsar, the icon was renewed and decorated with a precious robe. From now on, they gradually begin to create lists from this icon. Since the end of the 18th century, German princesses, marrying Russian grand dukes and converting to Orthodoxy, according to tradition, received the patronymic Feodorovna in honor of the Feodorovskaya icon. These include Maria Feodorovna (wife of Paul I), Alexandra Feodorovna (wife of Nicholas I), Maria Feodorovna (wife of Alexander III), Alexandra Feodorovna (wife of Nicholas II), Elizaveta Feodorovna. The origins of this tradition go back to the 17th century, when, in honor of the same icon, the “dissonant” patronymic of Tsarina Evdokia Lopukhina was changed from “Illarionovna” to “Feodorovna,” and when Tsar Ivan Alekseevich married Praskovya Saltykova, her patronymic was not only changed, but and changed her father's name from Alexander to Theodore.

The icon was repeatedly decorated with precious frames. At the beginning of the 19th century, at the expense of the residents of Kostroma, a new gold frame was made for the icon, in which precious stones from the previous one were placed. In the description of the Assumption Cathedral in Kostroma, which dates back to 1820, the icon is reported:

In this image, the robe, made in 1805 of the purest gold, by the cathedral, and more by the diligence of the citizens, weighs 20 pounds 39 spools with the crown; she and the crown are decorated with diamonds, yachts, emeralds, rubies (of which one red is the most precious), garnets and other precious stones, large pearls and Burmite grains... This image includes cassocks or earrings more than half an arshin in length, with Burmite grains, precious stones, gold dies, rings and pads...

In 1891, a golden chasuble weighing about 10 kg was made for the icon. She decorated the icon until 1922. After the October Revolution, the icon was in the temple. In 1919, in Kostroma, the image was examined by a commission of the museum department of the People's Commissariat for Education under the leadership of I. E. Grabar . In 1922, the Assumption Cathedral and Theodore Icon passed to the Renovationists. In 1929, the Kostroma community brought the icon to Moscow to the Central State Restoration Workshops. During the restoration work, experts came to the conclusion that the main part of the 13th century painting was lost. Since April 1964, the icon has been in the Church of the Resurrection on Debra, where the bishop's see was moved. On August 18, 1991, the Theodore Icon was transferred to the Epiphany Anastasia Cathedral, which was returned to the Russian Orthodox Church, where it remains to this day.

The celebration of the appearance of the Theodore Icon of the Blessed Virgin Mary has been known since the 13th century. The icon was locally revered. After the accession of Mikhail Feodorovich Romanov to the Moscow throne, a new celebration of the icon appeared, associated with the events of his naming in the Ipatiev Monastery. From this period, veneration of the image became church-wide. Initially it did not have a specific date. Various officials indicate the celebration either “ in the second or third or fourth week of Lent ,” then in “ the second week or on the other day of Lent .” The celebration of March 14 (old style) has been fixed in the church calendar since 1620, which is associated with the return from captivity of Patriarch Filaret, father of Mikhail Romanov. Typicons of the Assumption Cathedral for this day indicate: “ On the 14th day of the singing of the Most Pure Mother of God of Fedorov with Benedict for the naming of the sovereign... ”. Under the first Romanovs, the date of celebration, which fell on the days of Lent, was strictly observed and was transferred to other days only in cases of coincidence with Lazarus Saturday or the burial of someone from the royal family. In the second half of the 17th century, the date of the holiday began to be moved to the next Sunday, which already reduced its status. Under Patriarch Filaret, on the day of the holiday, at the end of the service, the tsar organized a festive reception, at which he presented gifts to his father, the patriarch. This tradition ceased to exist completely in 1668. In the second half of the 18th century, the custom of postponing the celebration of the icon to the nearest Sunday finally took root in the church life of the dominant church.

Icon of the Mother of God “Sovereign”

In Russia, along with cultural mass creativity, artistic images of the main mythical heroes of the Holy Bible occupy a special place in the world of Orthodox art

Among the legendary graphic works created by great icon painters in different historical times, the “Sovereign” icon of the Mother of God is of great importance for all religiously believing Christians

History of the icon

Her appearance on the territory of the Russian state is due to a long-standing legend, the plot of which is based on one day in the life of an ordinary peasant woman. Her name was Evdokia. She lived in the village of Kolomenskoye, located in the Moscow region. And then one day, right in a dream, the image of the Mother of God appeared to her. With her voice, she called on the young peasant woman to find the icon of the Most Holy Theotokos “Sovereign” and install it in a nearby church church so that people could constantly pray, asking for help. Before fulfilling the required conditions, Evdokia, the next morning after her night vision, immediately turned to the Ascension clergyman. Believing in the words of the Russian peasant woman, he decided to provide his maximum assistance so that the “Sovereign” Icon of the Mother of God could be found as quickly as possible, and so that subsequently other citizens could see it.

The search for the sacred antique canvas continued for a long time, until one fine moment an ancient, dusty relic was found in a church basement.

At that point in time, the citizens of Russia were going through difficult and very harsh times, which were associated with the complete elimination of the ruling autocracy. And the appearance of the “Sovereign” icon in Kolomenskoye was for people a sign of God’s choice, symbolizing the submission of temporarily without control citizens to the power of the Heavenly Kingdom.

It must be said that the image of the found shrine, with its majestic appearance, clearly makes people understand that only God will always rule in the world, and his influence over human destinies will remain unchanged.

What does the “Sovereign” icon look like?

The “sovereign” icon of the Mother of God looks like this: right in the middle of the paper canvas, a royal throne is hand-made, on which the Mother of God sits, holding the newborn Jesus Christ on her lap. In both hands she holds two main elements confirming the right to rule: the orb and the scepter. On the head, as befits an autocratic ruler, a bright golden crown sparkles, on top of which a holy halo rises in a semicircle.

Soon, after the nationwide veneration and appeal to the “Sovereign” icon, people began to notice how grace appeared in their lives. And the main significant event was the formation of the holy spring.

Thus, having appreciated its true power, Orthodox believers quickly realized the unique miraculous properties underlying this icon. As a result, the birth of the Most Holy All-Sovereign Icon of the Mother of God inspired subsequent icon painters to create accurate lists.

How does the “Sovereign” Icon of the Mother of God help?

Over the entire history of the existence of the shrine, people have been able to record many cases in which people managed to be completely cured after repeated prayerful appeals to the “Sovereign” icon of the Mother of God. After all, its significance is extremely great.

It helps people cope with mental and psychological troubles by adjusting their behavior to further conscious and purposeful actions.

Separate mention should be made of those people who, after reading a prayer in front of the icon of the Most Holy Theotokos “Sovereign”, managed to build strong, serious relationships, which were ultimately forever sealed with unbreakable bonds of marriage.

Celebration of the icon

In addition to this significant event, on July 27, the Kolomna Kazan Church celebrates the return of this shrine, which was lost for some time.

Prayer before the icon

While reading the prayer, people need to take care of their inner thoughts and intentions. They must be true and purposeful.

The text of the prayer is as follows:

Temples and monasteries in Rus' in honor of the Theodore Icon of the Mother of God

In honor of the Feodorovskaya Icon of the Mother of God, the Cathedral of the Feodorovsky Monastery in Gorodets, Nizhny Novgorod Region, was consecrated.

Mother of God-Feodorovsky Monastery at the beginning of the 20th century

The monastery was built at the beginning of the 13th century on the site of a wooden chapel in which the Theodore Icon of the Mother of God was located. The monastery was called the Mother of God-Feodorovskaya. According to legend, the monastery and the city were founded in 1152 by Prince Yuri Dolgoruky (1090s - 1157). In 1238, during the invasion of Batu's troops, Gorodets was devastated and the monastery was burned. Tradition says that the Feodorovskaya icon miraculously survived, but never returned to the monastery. But a miraculous list was placed in the monastery, which was the main shrine of the Theodore Church.

The monastery existed in this deserted place until approximately the 15th century, then the place was inhabited and the monastery was abolished. The monastery was re-established in 1700. In 1927 the monastery was closed. Revived in 2009.

In the name of the Feodorovskaya Icon of the Most Holy Theotokos, the chapel of the Cathedral of the Great Martyr Theodore Stratilates of the Feodorovsky Monastery in Pereslavl-Zalessky was consecrated. Fedorovsky Monastery was founded after 1304, on the southern outskirts of Pereslavl-Zalessky. The location of its foundation was not chosen by chance: here in 1304, on the day of memory of the Great Martyr Fyodor Stratelates, a bloody battle took place between the troops of the Moscow and Tver princes. Many people died in this battle, including the leader of the Tver army, boyar Akinf. In memory of the victory, Moscow Prince Yuri Danilovich built a monastery here. The oldest building of the monastery is Fedorovsky Cathedral, built in 1557. The cathedral was closed in 1928, and 2 years later the baroque bell tower that stood separately next to the cathedral was destroyed. The cathedral was used as a clothing warehouse for the children's colony located on the territory of the monastery, and then for the nursing home. After the Great Patriotic War, a military unit settled on the territory of the monastery. In 1998, the cathedral was transferred to the newly revived convent.

In the name of the Feodorovskaya Icon of the Blessed Virgin Mary, the chapel of the Ascension Cathedral of the Orshina Monastery in the village was consecrated. Orshino, Kalininsky district, Tver region. The Cathedral Church of the Ascension of the Lord was consecrated in 1567 by Saint Barsanuphius of Tver (c. 1495-1576). There were four thrones in it: the main one - the Ascension of the Lord, two side ones - St. Onuphrius the Great and the Holy Great Martyr Catherine, the throne of the Nativity of John the Baptist "on the floors".

Legends about the appearance of the icon

The first mention of this image appeared around the middle of the 13th century. However, it was written by the Evangelist Luke. There are several legends about the rediscovery of this icon in Rus', and they are all quite contradictory. But for the first time the image was found in an old wooden chapel near the city of Gorodets. This place was marked by grace, and after some time the Gorodetsky Feodorovsky Monastery was built here.

The further history of the icon of the Feodorovskaya Mother of God is rather vague. It is believed that it was in this image that in 1239 Yaroslav Vsevolodovich blessed his son Alexander Nevsky for marriage. He married the Polotsk princess Bryachislava. A sign of this action is the second image, which contains on its reverse the Theodore Icon of the Mother of God, namely St. much Paraskeva, which is also called Friday. She is considered the patroness of the Polotsk princely house.

Be that as it may, after 1238, when the country was invaded by Batu Khan, the chapel, like many other buildings, was looted and completely destroyed. She was simply burned. Everyone thought that the icon was lost. However, very little time passed, and the image was found again. And here there are several legends about this event.

The history of the holiday in honor of the appearance of the icon of the Most Holy Theotokos of Feodorovskaya

There is no exact information of the Feodorovskaya Icon of the Mother of God in Russia The first mention of an image of similar iconography dates back to the 12th century. The icon was located in a wooden chapel near the city of Gorodets (Nizhny Novgorod region). At the beginning of the 13th century, a monastery was built on this site in the name of the icon of the Mother of God, which became its main shrine. Later it began to be called by the name of the icon of the Mother of God, the Mother of God-Feodorovsky, and then - Feodorovsky. In 1238, during the invasion of Batu's troops, the city was destroyed, and the monastery also burned down. Contemporaries of the events believed that the icon was also lost, but after several years it was found again. There are several legends about the rediscovery of the Theodore Icon of the Blessed Virgin Mary.

The first legend . On August 16, 1239, the Kostroma prince Vasily Kvashnya (XIII century), not far from the Zaprudnya River, saw an image of the Virgin Mary hanging on a tree. With the participation of the priesthood, the icon was transferred to Kostroma and placed in the cathedral church of the Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary. Later, the Zaprudnensky Spassky Monastery was built at the site where the icon was found. The story of the appearance of the miraculous icon of Feodorovskaya reports the following:

...seeing the people of this venerable icon, and beginning to tell the story, saying, yesterday we saw this icon carried through our city by a certain warrior, similar to that warrior with the vision of the Holy Great Martyr Theodore Stratelates , and thus testifying to the people.

From the name of the Great Martyr Theodore, the icon received its name - Theodorovskaya. Soon a resident of Gorodets appeared in Kostroma, who reported that this was the same icon that was considered lost after the burning of the Feodorovskaya monastery.

According to the second legend , the Feodorovskaya Icon of the Mother of God was found on August 16, 1263 by the younger brother of Alexander Nevsky (1221-1263), the Kostroma prince Vasily Yaroslavich (1236/1241-1276). This date is indicated in the “Tale of the Appearance and Miracles of the Theodore Icon of the Mother of God in Kostroma” (1670)

The third legend reports that Yuri Vsevolodovich (1188-1238) found the Feodorovsky image of the Mother of God in a dilapidated wooden chapel near Gorodets (later the Gorodetsky Feodorovsky Monastery was built on this site). After the death of the prince, the icon passed to his younger brother Yaroslav Vsevolodovich (1190/1191-1246), who blessed the marriage of his son Alexander Nevsky with the Polotsk princess Alexandra Bryachislavovna with the image. After the death of Prince Alexander in 1263, the icon passed to his younger brother Vasily (the second legend tells about him), who transferred the holy image to Kostroma.

The events described above formed the basis of the legend about the icon. The icon was transferred from Gorodets, devastated by Batu, to Kostroma, where it was placed in the church of the Great Martyr Theodore Stratilates (d. 319). This fact is confirmed by the “Tale of the Appearance and Miracles of the Theodore Icon of the Mother of God in Kostroma.” From that moment on, it began to be called Feodorovskaya. Some researchers, based on the identity of the iconography of the Feodorovskaya icon with the Vladimir icon, consider it a copy of a famous ancient shrine and put forward three versions of its origin :

  1. the icon was painted in 1164 by order of Andrei Bogolyubsky (1111-1174) for the Gorodets Monastery;
  2. The icon was painted by order of Prince Yaroslav Vsevolodovich in 1239 as a gift for the wedding of his son Alexander Nevsky. It is noteworthy that on the reverse side of the image there is an image of the Great Martyr Paraskeva, who in Rus' was considered the patroness of brides and weddings, as well as the former patroness of the Polotsk princely house, where Alexander’s bride came from;
  3. The icon was painted by order of Yaroslav Vsevolodovich in 1218-1220 in honor of the return of his wife Theodosia, who was taken away by her father in 1216 during the confrontation, and the birth of his first-born Theodore from her (1219-1233).

Regarding the name of the icon “Theodore”, it is hypothesized that it arose due to the fact that Theodore Stratelates was the heavenly patron of Prince Yaroslav and many other Mstislavich princes, with whom Yaroslav and his offspring were connected through his wife Theodosia, daughter of Mstislav Mstislavich Udatny (d. 1228).

What do they pray for to the Feodorovskaya Icon of the Mother of God?

Everyone reads a prayer about what worries or bothers them

The image helps not only with difficult childbirth, but also with the good upbringing of the child, which is important for future parents

As you know, all miraculous requests are documented in the annals of churches. Prayer should not be treated as a spell. Remember that prayer is your appeal to God, the Mother of God or the Saint. You need to pray from a pure heart and sincerely.

You should not pray in the form of an ultimatum. If you don't have enough spiritual experience, there are written prayers that will help you find the words you need. You can also pray in your own words, because God is pleased with such an appeal.

Don’t forget to ask for strength and help to endure life’s trials, reason, wisdom and a bright mind.

This is how they say the prayer itself to the image of the Mother of God:

How to pray before the icon of the Virgin Mary

You can pray to the holy face of the Mother of God, depicted on the Feodorovskaya icon, within the walls of an Orthodox church and at home. The main conditions for turning to the Queen of Heaven are true faith and trust in the providence of the Lord God, good intentions and sincerity of the words spoken. A prayer coming from the heart will certainly be heard in Heaven.

To pray fruitfully in church, it is recommended to attend a service, light candles in front of the faces of the saints, and venerate the icon. Confession and reception of Holy Communion will strengthen the petition. It would also be good to enlist the priest’s blessing to read prayers.

For home prayer, it is necessary to choose a suitable place where the person praying can retire, and a time when there is the least likelihood of being disturbed by members of the household. Prayers are read while standing in front of the image. Anyone who is unable to stand due to health reasons is allowed to pray while sitting or lying down. The person praying must wear a cross.

To find inner peace and tune in to the right mood, at home a church candle or lamp is lit in front of the icon. You need to pronounce the words of prayers slowly, clearly, thinking about the meaning of each phrase read. If you get confused while reading the text, you need to start praying again. All the thoughts of the person asking should be turned to prayer. During a prayer service, you cannot think about pressing concerns or be distracted physically and mentally.

Prayer to the Mother of God before the Feodorovskaya icon for pregnant women

“To whom will I call, O Lady, to whom will I resort in my sorrow; to whom will I bring my tears and sighs, if not to You, Queen of Heaven and earth: who will pluck me from the mire of sins and iniquities, if not You, O Mother of the Belly, Intercessor and Refuge of the human race.

Hear my groaning, comfort me and have mercy in my sorrow, protect me in troubles and misfortunes, deliver me from anger and sorrow, and all sorts of ailments and illnesses, from visible and invisible enemies, pacify the enmity of those who suffer me, so that I will be delivered from slander and human malice ; Likewise, free me from your flesh’s vile customs. Cover me under the canopy of Your mercy, so that I may find peace and joy and cleansing from sins.

I commend myself to your Motherly intercession; give me Mother and hope, protection, and help, and intercession, joy and consolation, and a quick Helper in everything. Oh, wonderful Lady! Everyone flows to You, without Your all-powerful help does not leave; For this reason, even though I am unworthy, I come running to You, so that I may be delivered from sudden and cruel death, gnashing of teeth and eternal torment.

I am worthy to receive the Kingdom of Heaven and to You in the tenderness of my heart the river: Rejoice, Mother of God, our zealous Representative and Intercessor, forever and ever. Amen."

Have mercy on us, Lady, have mercy on us, for there is no salvation for us from works. It is also true that we cry to Thee: have mercy on Thy servants and show our barren heart fruitful in good deeds. Look down on us, unworthy, for You are our hope and protection, life and light to our hearts. As you raised up the Everlasting Light from Your womb, illuminate our soul, O Pure One, and drive away all darkness in our hearts.

Grant us tenderness, repentance and contrition of heart. Grant us all the days of our lives to do the will of Thy Son and our God and to please Him alone in everything.

O God-loving Lady, adornment of the angels, glory to the martyrs and joy to all the saints, pray to the Lord with them, that he may grant us in repentance to end the course of our life. In the hour of death, Most Holy Virgin, deliver us from the power of demons and condemnation, and the answer, and the terrible test, and bitter ordeals, and eternal fire, so that, having been honored with the glorious Kingdom of God, we magnify Thee and glorify Christ, our God, incarnate from Thee, To him be glory with the Father and the Holy Spirit, now and ever, and unto ages of ages. To whom will I call, Lady, to whom will I resort in my sorrow; to whom will I bring my tears and sighs, if not to You, Queen of Heaven and earth: who will pluck me from the mire of sins and iniquities, if not You, O Mother of the Belly, Intercessor and Refuge of the human race. History of appearance and meaning of the icon

This icon was painted by the Apostle Luke and was created according to the same canons as the Vladimir Mother of God. It acquired its name from Theodore Stratilates and was received by Saint Yuri (George) Vsevolodovich (his elder brother).

Its history began in 1239 during the hunt of Prince Vasily Yuryevich in the Kostroma forest. The prince accidentally saw the icon on a very high tree. He wanted to take her in his hands, but the face “didn’t work out.” She only rose even higher in the air and it became very difficult to reach her with her hands. Being amazed by the miracle he saw, Vasily Yuryevich called people and priests to the place where his unusual find was discovered.

People held a general prayer service near the icon. After this, the face was removed from the tree and carried in triumph to the main Kostroma Cathedral. On the eve of the miracle, local residents saw a warrior walking along the streets of Kostroma and holding an icon in his hands. The warrior outwardly resembled the Great Martyr Theodore Stratelates. Therefore, the miraculous find was nicknamed Feodorovskaya.

Many people came to the city to venerate the newfound face of the Mother of God, including residents of Gorodets, destroyed by the Tatars. It was in this city that the holy image was previously kept, but it disappeared after the fire caused by the Tatars. It used to be in the city chapel.

With the acquired image of the Theodore Mother of God, the Kostroma clergy came out to meet the Moscow embassy, which included the young Mikhail Romanov. He wanted to ask for accession to the throne. The religious procession went to the monastery with the icon. The young ruler lived there with his mother. Previously, she denied her son accession to the throne. But after the archbishop’s sublime speech, the woman agreed and gave her son her blessing to reign. On her knees, the mother handed over the image of the Virgin Mary to her son. From that moment on, the face of Feodorov was revered in the imperial house. All foreign princesses who became wives of Russian princes and emperors, after accepting the Orthodox faith, acquired the patronymic Feodorovna in honor of the family icon.

The Feodorovskaya icon of the Mother of God is over 8 centuries old. It is of great importance for the country, as it has saved it from various troubles more than once. For example, thanks to her, it is believed that Prince Vasily’s victory over the Tatars was won.

The prayer said before the Theodore Mother of God helps a childless family to conceive a long-awaited child, and unmarried girls to find a betrothed. She also helps women giving birth safely.

For prayer to have an effect, you must do the following:

  • visit church to confess and receive communion;
  • buy candles and collect holy water;
  • wear a cross on your body day and night;
  • before prayer you need to discard all bad thoughts;
  • Next, a candle is lit and the text of the prayer, learned by heart, is said on one’s knees. It can be pronounced in your own words or read from a prayer book.

Reading is done daily. You also need to visit holy places and offer praise to Heaven every day.

After reading, a wish is not always fulfilled immediately. Sometimes you have to wait months, even years.

The main thing is to believe and carry out all the descriptions above the action. In this case, the Most Holy Mother and the Lord will definitely hear the prayer request and fulfill it.

Feodorovsky image of the Blessed Virgin Mary. Iconography

According to legend, the Theodore Icon of the Mother of God was painted by the Evangelist Luke . The image belongs to the iconographic type of Eleus (Tenderness). Its iconography is very close to the Vladimir Icon of the Blessed Virgin Mary. For this reason, many researchers consider Feodorovskaya to be a list of Vladimirskaya. The difference between the Feodorovskaya icon and the Vladimirskaya icon is the left leg of the Savior, naked to the knee. According to the description of the icon made when it was transferred to Kostroma, it had the following appearance:

...painted with oil paints “on dry wood.” The board is 1 arshin 2 vershoks long, 12 vershoks wide. The Mother of God is depicted with her head slightly bowed on her right shoulder. The right hand supports the Infant God hugging the Mother of God. The right leg of the Infant God is covered with a robe, while the left leg is uncovered up to the knee. On the reverse side is written the Holy Great Martyr Paraskeva, called Friday... The lower part of the icon ends with a handle 1 1/2 arshins in length.

To this day, the icon has been poorly preserved; it has been renewed more than once, and the original painting of the faces of the Virgin Mary and Jesus Christ is noticeably worn out. On the reverse side of the icon is a half-length image of the Great Martyr Paraskeva Pyatnitsa. The saint is depicted in red clothes, decorated with golden floral patterns. Her hands are raised in prayer at chest level.

Icon of the Mother of God “Feodorovskaya”. Story

Each icon of the Mother of God has its own story, its own name. It’s amazing how much intersects in the history of the “Feodorovskaya” icon - here are the names of Theodore Stratelates, and Paraskeva, and Prince Alexander Nevsky, and the beginning of a new dynasty of Russian tsars - the Romanovs - is associated with this icon.

Tradition says that this icon was painted by the Evangelist Luke; it is unknown how it got to the small town of Gorodets, where the first mentions of the icon go back. However, in 1239 Gorodets was burned by the Mongol-Tatars, and the image disappeared, but was soon miraculously found by the younger brother of Alexander Nevsky, Prince Vasily of Kostroma. While chasing an animal while hunting, the prince accidentally saw an icon on a pine tree. He tried to take it off, but it rose into the air. At the same time, in Kostroma, many residents saw how some warrior walked through the city, carrying an icon in his hands. This warrior looked like the image of the holy great martyr Theodore Stratelates, in whose honor the cathedral was built in Kostroma.

Returning to the city, the prince, in excitement, told the clergy about what had happened. Arriving at the place indicated by the prince, the priests and people saw the image of the Mother of God, fell to their knees and prayed for a long time. Having removed the icon from the tree, it was placed in the cathedral church of the city of Kostroma, and the icon was called Feodorovskaya, remembering the appearance of Theodore Stratilates with the icon, who later appeared to Russian soldiers on the battlefield more than once. At the site where the icon was found, the first monastic monastery on Kostroma land was founded - the Spaso-Zaprudnikovsky Monastery.

It is known that in the same 1239, Grand Duke Yaroslav Vsevolodovich blessed his son, the blessed Grand Duke Alexander Nevsky, to marry Alexandra, the daughter of the Polotsk Tsar, Prince Bryachislav. And here another feature of the Feodorovskaya icon is revealed: on the reverse side there is an image of the holy martyr Paraskeva (Friday), who was considered in Rus' the patroness of weddings and brides.

During the stay of the Theodore Icon in Kostroma, many miraculous events took place: the Kostroma Cathedral burned twice, and twice the icon remained unharmed in the fire. In 1260, the Tatars approached Kostroma, and the city was threatened with complete ruin. The prince's militia consisted of only a small squad, which he managed to quickly assemble. Not relying on his own strength, the prince ordered the image of the Defender of Christians to be carried before him. During the battle, a miracle happened: dazzling rays of light began to emanate from the face of the Most Holy Theotokos. The Tatars, struck by the burning rays, fled, and the battle ended in victory for the Kostroma people. In memory of this miracle, the prince erected a cross, exactly on the spot where the icon stood during the battle; later a stone chapel was built there, and the nearby lake was named Holy.

The power of the icon of the Feodorovskaya Mother of God

Theodore's image of the Most Holy Theotokos with the baby Jesus in her arms was painted by the icon painter Luke. The shrine was found by Saint Prince Yuri Vsevolodovich in an old chapel located near the town of Gorodets. After the death of the prince, the icon was taken by his younger brother Yaroslav Vsevolodovich, who was named Theodore at baptism. The holy image of the Mother of God was named in his honor.

A monastery was erected at the site where the shrine was found, and the icon was installed in the Vladimir Assumption Cathedral. Later, in the Feodorovsky image, Prince Yaroslav blessed his son, the future Saint Alexander Nevsky, who inherited the relic. Saint Alexander venerated the shrine and read prayer speeches in front of it. After Alexander's death, his brother Vasily took the icon. This is how the image ended up in Kostroma.

The miraculous effect of the Feodorovsky holy face of the Mother of God was revealed in 1272, when Vasily moved to battle with the Tatar army. The rays emanating from the miraculous face illuminated and protected the prince. The enemy was defeated.

Mikhail Romanov was blessed in Feodorov's image for his reign, and the shrine was considered a talisman of the royal family. Prayers in front of the shrine brought healing from illnesses, consolation and assistance in worldly affairs.
