Name day of Constantine according to the Orthodox calendar
Baptism in the Orthodox Church involves, among other things, the rite of naming.
The name is selected from the proposed list, which is called “saints”, and is given to a person in honor of one or another saint, who from the moment of baptism will be considered his heavenly patron.
And the day of church memory of this saint will henceforth become a name day holiday for people. In this article we will talk about those days on which Constantine’s name day may fall according to the church calendar.
June 15. Martyr Constantine
This man came from a Muslim Turkish family. As a young man, he fell ill with smallpox and was already preparing for death. However, a certain Christian woman took the boy and took him to an Orthodox church, where she washed his body with holy water. The young man immediately recovered and returned home completely healthy.
When this happened, he decided to convert to Christianity, for which he went to Mount Athos, where he was baptized in one of the monasteries. When he announced this to his compatriots, they put him to death as an apostate. This happened in 1819.
On the day of the death of a young man, his church memory is celebrated, and accordingly, the day of the angel Constantine is celebrated.
June 18. Saint Constantine, Metropolitan of Kiev and All Rus'
Saint Constantine was originally from a Greek family. In 1155, the Patriarch of Constantinople ordained him to the rank of bishop in order for him to occupy the metropolitan see in Kyiv.
Two years after this, Prince Yuri Dolgoruky died, after which the confrontation began. During this struggle, Metropolitan Constantine was removed from his see, and he retired to Chernigov, where Bishop Anthony received him.
After living there for two years, Saint Constantine died. His memory and Constantine's name day are celebrated on June 18.
11th August. Saint Constantine, Patriarch of Constantinople
The future patriarch in his youth received an excellent education in Constantinople, where he then made a brilliant career for himself at the court of the emperor. However, in 1050 he fell out of favor and, by order of Emperor Constantine Monomakh, was deprived of all regalia and expelled from the capital.
As a result of this, he retires to a monastery and takes monastic vows, and a few years later returns to the capital as abbot of one of the monasteries. In 1959, he was elected to the vacated patriarchal throne, which he occupied until his death in 1063. In the Orthodox Church he is canonized.
According to the new style, his memory is celebrated on August 11. Constantine’s name day is also celebrated along with it.
June 3. Equal to the Apostles Emperor Constantine
This emperor of the Roman Empire put an end to the persecution of Christians in the empire and, moreover, proclaimed Christianity as the state religion. He was born in 280 in Naissa, which is located on the territory of modern Serbia. His father was a military leader. The future head of the empire spent his youth at the court of Emperor Diocletian in Nicomedia.
When the young man was 25 years old, the emperor abdicated his throne, as a result of which Constantine's father became the ruler of the western part of the empire. A year later he died and Constantine ascended the throne. By 312, he had won a decisive victory over his political rivals and established his power in the western part of the empire.
With his power, he legalized the hitherto prohibited and oppressed Christian teaching and encouraged its spread. In 324, Constantine defeated the eastern emperor Licinius and became sole ruler. In 337, he fell ill with pneumonia and left for Nicomedia, where he died on May 22 of the same year.
On this day, according to the church calendar, his memory is celebrated, as well as the day of the angel Constantine. The date of celebration according to the civil calendar falls on June 3.
January 8. Venerable Constantine of Sinad (Phrygian)
This saint came from a Jewish family living in the city of Sinad. He converted to Christianity in his youth, leaving his father’s house for a monastery, where he was baptized and then became a monk. The Church honors him as a saint, celebrating his memory annually on January 8th. On this day, the name day of Constantine is celebrated by men baptized in his honor.
