Vasiliev's day
St. Basil the Great, Archbishop. Caesarea of Cappadocia (c. 330–379) was born in Caesarea, the administrative center of Cappadocia, and came from a noble Christian family. The bishops were his uncle and two brothers - Gregory of Nyssa and Peter of Sebaste. The saint's sister was the Monk Macrina (future abbess). Basil received an excellent education in Caesarea, Constantinople and Athens.
Under the influence of the pious sister Macrina, Vasily left the bustle of the city and founded a semblance of a monastic community. The following years were darkened by the spread of the false teaching of Arius (which was also shared by the Caesarea bishop Dianius), which Basil opposed. Shortly before the death of Diania, Vasily was ordained as a presbyter, but preferred a remote monastic life.
In 363, when the wicked emperor Julian the Apostate began the return of paganism and the destruction of churches, “St. Basil the Great prayed before the icon of the Most Holy Theotokos, which had an image of the holy Great Martyr Mercury with a spear as a warrior, so that the wicked king Julian the Apostate, the great persecutor and the destroyer of faithful Christians, who did not return from the Persian War to exterminate the Christian faith, he saw that there, near the icon of the Most Holy Theotokos, the image of Saint Mercury became invisible for some time, then appeared with a bloody spear. And at that very time, Julian the Apostate was pierced in the Persian War by the spear of an unknown warrior, who immediately after that became invisible” (St. Demetrius of Rostov. Lives of the Saints, November 24).
In 365, Basil returned to Caesarea and took control of the diocese into his own hands. He wrote three books against the Arians, preaching the slogan “three hypostases in one essence,” which was acceptable both to followers of the Nicene Creed and to those who had recently sympathized with the Arians. Despite the opposition of a number of bishops, in 370 Basil took the place of Metropolitan of Cappadocia and zealously began to eradicate Arianism in Asia Minor.
The then emperor Valens supported the Arians and opposed the saint. Nevertheless, Vasily managed to promote his comrades Gregory of Nyssa and Gregory the Theologian to the place of bishops of key cities. The death of Valens in the Battle of Adrianople changed the balance of power in the state and the Church, but the health of St. Vasily was undermined, he died on the first day of the new year 379 and was soon canonized. His memory is celebrated on January 1 (14) and January 30 (February 12) - the Council of the Three Hierarchs.
St. Basil the Great, along with Nicholas the Wonderworker, is especially revered in Rus'. For his special services to the Church, he is called the “Great” and “Ecumenical Teacher”; he wrote many soul-saving books, church prayers and divine liturgy. His friend St. Gregory the Theologian said about him in his funeral homily: “He was the support of faith, the rule of truth, the model of the Church, the abode of the Spirit, a man who surpassed the measure of virtues.” A particle of his relics still remains in the Pochaev Lavra.

Vasiliev's Day is what our people call the day of remembrance of St. Basil the Great. On the occasion that on this day in the old days the civil year began, after mass in the churches of God a prayer service was always sung for the New Year. After him, returning home, our ancestors met the sowers
- children who, however, began their rounds even before the morning service.
This sowing
known by different names:
avsenya, ovsenya, usenya, govsenya, badtsenya, bausenya and tausenya
. All these names come from a corruption of the word "oats", which is of primary importance in the celebration of this ancient rite.
Its essence lies in the fact that children go to the houses of their fellow villagers on New Year’s Day and “sow” oats, buckwheat, rye and other grains from a sleeve or bag, while singing sowing songs
:
I sow, I winnow, I sow, Happy New Year, To the cattle, to the belly, To the little children!
This rite is a remnant of some forgotten agricultural holiday, and the holy prophet Elijah is remembered here as an assistant in agricultural work. Little “sowers”, who are seen as harbingers of the future harvest and new happiness, are given everything they can.
Following the children, adults also go to congratulate each other, “one neighbor goes to another to talk.” Arriving at the hut, the guest prays at the icons, and then, turning to the owner, mistress and other household members, says:
- Great, Ivan Grigorievich! Happy new year to you, with new happiness!
The owner responds:
- You too, Innokenty Ivanovich, please come and be welcome.
In some places it is also the custom on St. Basil’s Day to go from house to house and collect pies, pork feet and generally edible Christmas things. The villagers making this round say under the windows of the houses: “Give out a pig and a boletus for Vasilyev’s evening,” or: “Guts and legs in the upper window.” Pork meat is the main treat during Vasilyev's evening and Christmastide. Wealthy people have a pig's head on the table for a whole week from the Nativity of Christ until the New Year. That's why St. Basil the Great, whose memory our church celebrates on January 1, is considered the patron saint of pigs among our people. Our shepherds deeply honor St. Vasily and are afraid of angering him. In the Oryol province they prepare roasted pig for the New Year and call it Kasaretsky, apparently from the name of St. Basil the Great - Caesarea. ( Priest Evgeny Purtov
