It would seem that the 21st century has long moved away from the need to rely on luck or mystical influence. However, despite this, people are increasingly acquiring talismans, amulets, and so on. But not a single amulet can compare in power to a consecrated thing. The ritual of consecrating an object with the help of prayer is a very serious process that completely absorbs the person conducting the ritual itself, combining and directing the power bestowed by the Almighty into the object that the person is consecrating.
How to consecrate an item at home yourself
A lay person can consecrate ordinary, small purchases, food, toys, gifts, and jewelry on his own. Depending on the item and circumstances, the ritual can be performed quickly or with preparation and sprinkling with Holy water:
- If you want to bless products brought from the store, just cross them and say: “Lord, bless.” You don't have to sprinkle, saying the briefest blessings. There is not enough time or water for every sneeze. Fanaticism is not appropriate.
- You were given something, or you found some item, but you are afraid of damage. Read the so-called “Conception”, Prayer for the sanctification of every thing, Psalm 90 + “May God rise again...”. Sprinkling with Holy water three times is mandatory.
Note: Sprinkle (sprinkle) Holy water in a cross-shaped motion.
At this moment say: “In the Name of the Father and the Son and the Holy Spirit.” “Sanctify” three times, say these words the same number of times.
What are the rites of consecration?
There are special orders for the purification and illumination of water, temples and other buildings, both liturgical and secular.
It is especially worth noting the actions that are performed with water. After all, water is a symbol of all living things; it not only quenches thirst, but helps us in performing various rituals. Everyone knows about the Great Rite on Epiphany Eve, but there is also a so-called “small order”, which takes place on the 1st of every month.
It is possible to purify water for your needs with the help of a short prayer and the sign of the cross - every believer can do this.
In the age of high technology, we clearly understand that no matter how far scientific and technological progress has come, designed to illuminate certain problems, we are still vulnerable to dark forces. And it doesn’t matter whether a person believes in a Higher Power or not, this does not diminish their influence on him. It’s quite simple to protect yourself and your loved ones with the help of an ordinary prayer, said with soul and faith in God’s help. And a prayer created for the consecration of any purchased item will help protect your home from evil thoughts, envy and other people’s negative energy.
Despite the incredible importance of the spiritual world for a Christian, he still lives in the material world, which constantly influences the spiritual. How to do the right thing, who to marry, what to buy - all these questions haunt believers every day. People want to be blessed and surround themselves with such things, so prayer for the consecration of a new thing is popular among Orthodox Christians.
When is a priest needed?
If you need to consecrate an apartment, room, car, or something more significant and large, invite the priest. A certain order of prayers and actions is used here.
If “strange” things happen in the house, if demonic machinations overcome you, warn about it. They will add special incantatory prayers that only the priest can read.
Note: Find out in advance what attributes you will need. What the priest will bring, and what you need to buy yourself: Holy water, candles, cross stickers, oil, etc.
Rite of consecration of objects
You can consecrate an object, room, property on any day when it is convenient for you and the priest.
You should contact the minister in the church shop,
which will tell you when it is convenient to negotiate with the priest.
He will also clarify about a possible donation.
You can also call the Intercession Church phone number:
(911) 906-3030
So, whether you eat, drink, or whatever you do,
do everything for the glory of God
(1 Cor. 10:31)
sanctification the rites that are introduced by the Church into the temple and personal life of a person, so that through these rites the blessing of God descends on his life, on all his activities and on the entire environment of his life.
Why do we ask the Church to consecrate objects
or property (house, apartment, office, store...)
The basis of the various church prayers is the desire to spiritualize human activity, to perform it with God's help and with His blessing. We ask the Lord to direct our affairs in such a way that they are pleasing to Him and benefit our neighbors, the Church, the Fatherland and ourselves; bless our relationships with people so that peace and love prevail in them. And therefore we ask that our home, the things that belong to us, the vegetables grown in our garden, the water from the well, through the blessing of God that has descended on them, help us in this, protect us, and strengthen our strength.
The consecration of a house, apartment, car or any other thing is evidence, first of all, of our trust in God, our faith that nothing happens to us without His holy will.
The Church sanctifies everything necessary for human life with prayer and blessing. The Church sanctifies all nature and all the elements: water, air, fire and earth.
About Holy Water and Sanctification
Holy water carries Divine energy. Not only because it protects from evil. Although, when consecrating this or that thing or room, we try to protect ourselves from this object becoming an instrument of evil. We are trying to protect from evil, first of all, the person who uses or comes into contact with these objects of the material world. But through the sprinkling of holy water we perceive Divine grace. Our strength is doubled. And it is not the object, the room, that is, first of all, sanctified, but the people who will use it, live or work in it.
Sanctification is a blessing
In relation to the rite of consecration, the word “blessing” is more appropriate: when performing it, we prayerfully call upon God’s blessing on the house and those living in it, on their Christian life and good deeds - or on a vehicle, on the peaceful and prosperous path of those who use them. Therefore, such sanctification is not some kind of automatic action: its effectiveness directly depends on the extent to which those asking for church blessings themselves correspond with their lives to the holiness of the grace of God given by the Church.
Consecration of a house or apartment
During the consecration of an apartment and house, the priest, with the help of prayers, calls on the Holy Spirit and expels evil spirits from this room. The apartment is sanctified, dedicated to God and is under the protection of an Angel. The angel keeps this dwelling under the condition that a normal, moral lifestyle is lived in it. And everyone who lives in this house finds a way to connect with God.
The consecration of the house is performed by a priest according to a special rite, containing prayers calling upon the house and those living in it the blessing of God. At the same time, an image of a cross is applied to the walls, they are anointed with blessed oil, and the entire home is sprinkled with holy water.
Preparing a house for consecration: to consecrate a house, it is necessary to bring the house into proper condition. You should prepare holy water, candles, vegetable oil, preferably special stickers with crosses, which the priest will paste on all four sides of your house to be blessed. It is necessary that there be a table, preferably covered with a clean tablecloth, where the priest can put holy objects. Be sure to check if the apartment contains occult literature, amulets (including a horseshoe over the door), astrological calendars, figurines of pagan deities, non-Christian symbols, etc. Do you have icons of the Savior, the Mother of God, or especially revered saints in your home?
A home needs to be blessed once. Subsequently, it is useful to prayerfully sprinkle the premises with holy water or fumigate them with incense.
It is very important, when inviting a priest for such a private service, not to treat the consecration of the room as some kind of magical ritual, but to be participants in the service, adding your prayerful voice to the prayer of the priest.
Consecration of an office, institution, enterprise
The place where a person works and spends most of his time can and should be sanctified. The consecration of an office, institution, or enterprise is an expression of our hope in God, our faith that everything happens according to His holy will. By sanctifying an institution, we protect our workspace from disasters and receive blessings for good and creative deeds.
When consecrating an institution, it is necessary to choose the time of consecration so that those working in the organization can take part in the rite of consecration performed by the priest. People working in the institution, through their common prayer, show that their environment and the place of their work is the territory of God and there should be no place for evil here.
Blessing of transport
We spend quite a lot of our daily life in the car. In addition, we understand that any vehicle is a subject of increased danger both for the driver and for the people around him. All this encourages Christians to turn to God so that the Lord will preserve us and our cars, help us along the way, protect us, so that the journey on it ends safely after each trip. The blessing of a car is a blessing of the car and its owners. A Christian, sanctifying a vehicle, dedicates himself, this car, his deeds and thoughts to God. The same applies not only to a car, but also to a boat, boat, motorcycle, scooter, aircraft, etc.
Before the consecration, cars are driven to the temple. It is necessary to open the hood, doors and trunk of the car so that the priest can sprinkle the entire car with holy water. The priest reads a series of prayers and then sprinkles holy water on the car. An icon is placed on the front panel of the car. In the church shop of our church, or any other, you can purchase an icon that can be easily attached to the surface of the panel using glue or a magnet.
Blessing a car imposes certain responsibilities. After the consecration, you cannot smoke in the car. The driver must try not to violate traffic rules. If a driver behaves incorrectly on the road towards other road users and risks the safety of people, he commits a sin. And the sin will be even worse if all these violations are committed in a consecrated car.
A person must remember that a car is just a means of transportation. By sanctifying the machine, he seeks to sanctify himself, to preserve his immortal soul. The consecration of a car is a joint prayer and God’s Blessing through the priest, therefore, during the rite of consecration of the car, the prayerful participation of the owner of the vehicle and his companions is necessary.
If you can’t consecrate your car yet, you can hang the icon and, while getting behind the wheel, pray in front of it for a safe journey.
Consecration of fruits
In the Old Testament, God's chosen people were commanded to bring the firstfruits of fruits, over which the priest performed the rite of offering.
This rite marked the consecration of the fruits, as well as gratitude to the Lord, from whom comes “every good gift and every perfect gift” (James 1:17). The custom of dedicating the firstfruits to God, as established by the Divine Commandment, along with other significant customs of the Old Testament, became part of the sacred rites of the New Testament worship. The church charter commanded Christians to bring grape fruits to the temple for blessing on the Feast of the Transfiguration of the Lord. In our country, in most of whose territory grapes do not grow, mostly apples and pears, already fully ripe for this day, are brought to the temple for the Transfiguration. Hence the popular name of this holiday - “Apple Savior”. The Trebnik, chapter 10, also speaks of vegetables that should be brought “in due time to the temple for blessing.”
For the consecration of grapes and apples, as well as for the consecration of vegetables, there are two prayers in the Trebnik, read by the clergyman. In these prayers, the Holy Church, on behalf of her children, asks God to consecrate the firstfruits of vegetables and fruits, so that they may be “for joy” and “for the cleansing of sins” to those who eat them. After reading the offering prayers and singing the festive troparion, the fruits are sprinkled with holy water.
Consecration of the icon and pectoral cross
The consecration of the icon and the pectoral cross takes place in the church during the water blessing service or upon a separate request, with which you can make to the priest.
In the Russian Orthodox Church, it is customary to consecrate icons. To do this, the priest performs a special rite - the rite of consecration and blessing of the icon, sprinkling it with holy water. After consecration, the icon is used for prayer and communion with God.
If you buy an icon and a pectoral cross in a church or monastery, then in most cases they have already been consecrated, and you do not need to perform this rite again. Be sure to check with the seller whether the images you want to buy are consecrated. Also, images, icons and pectoral crosses must comply with Orthodox canons.
The icon and pectoral cross are consecrated in the following cases:
- If the icon is newly painted or has undergone restoration;
- If the icon has undergone desecration or been desecrated (for example, thrown into the trash);
- Pectoral crosses can be submitted for consecration either with or without a chain;
- Crosses made according to the Catholic model are not subject to consecration (outwardly this is expressed in the fact that the Savior’s legs on the Crucifixion are folded crosswise and nailed with one nail, and not two, as in the Orthodox tradition);
- You should treat the pectoral cross with reverence and try to never remove it. In the case when a small child grabs his cross, brings it to his face and can harm himself, the cross should be placed next to the child, for example, above his crib. You should not wear a pectoral cross over your clothes, displaying it.
When consecration is not carried out
Despite the fact that there is a prayer with the help of which any thing is sanctified, there are some exceptions for both laymen and priests. For example, a priest will refuse the requirement:
- If the item has already been consecrated: be it an apartment, a car or a cross.
- When a petitioner openly declares unbelief, he has a biased attitude towards the church.
- In case a person does not understand the meaning of consecration, considering it a magical (pagan) rite that charges the object with “good energy”. It's even worse when both are mixed.
They will refuse to consecrate casinos, abortion clinics, money, and items that are a means of deception, cause grief to families, and promote lies and debauchery. For example, institutions of a special type, publishing houses with an anti-Christian orientation, etc.
If you need to bless your car?
As already mentioned, to consecrate a large purchase such as a car or it is necessary to invite a priest from the nearest temple
, agree with him on the time of this ceremony.
In many families, cars are not so much a luxury item as a necessity. A significant part of human life passes in them, some are associated with professional activities. And therefore, naturally, you want to feel safe.
As for the definition of “consecration,” in relation to a vehicle it has a slightly different meaning than, say, in relation to water, crosses or icons. The term “blessing” would be more appropriate here, because it is the clergyman who, when performing the ritual, invokes it on the car, as well as on the well-being of the roads ahead for the driver and his performance of good deeds.
Blessing a car has a deep spiritual meaning
. A person who wants to perform this ritual on his vehicle must clearly understand that this is not at all magical, guaranteeing safe driving.
By doing this, the owner of the car voluntarily and consciously turns and devotes his thoughts and deeds related to the further use of the car to the Lord God
, after all, he expects blessings and protection from Him.
The effectiveness of this ritual primarily depends on how worthy the person who ordered it is of this grace, how much he believes and sincerely prays and whether he is ready not to use his transport for evil or harm to anyone, not to commit immoral or sinful actions with its help .
What does Orthodox consecration of a thing mean?
A person who decides to consecrate a thing, either by inviting a priest or by himself, must understand why he should do it.
What does this oblige you to? For the blessing to “work” without failure, certain conditions are required. Sometimes people mistakenly think that after this the car will not get into an accident, the equipment in the apartment will not break down, the thing will last a long time, will not get lost, etc. When they see that none of this is there, they wonder why? For example, a woman invited a priest to bless an apartment. He hasn't gone far when she comes with a complaint. Father, why did my harvester break down if you blessed everything?
How to explain that God is not a good offices office. Neither the pike from the fairy tale who fulfills Emelya’s wishes, nor the fairy who turns a pumpkin into a carriage. He is not a goldfish, and a person should not behave like that old woman with the trough. By sanctifying a thing, receiving God’s blessing, a person promises to use it for good purposes:
- While sitting behind the wheel of a car, you cannot use foul language, act recklessly, set other drivers up, call names and get irritated. If you see someone in need of help, stop and give it. A blessing comes from the one who cheats on his spouse, and even using transport, etc.
- In the apartment you cannot conduct esoteric sessions, express yourself, condemn friends, or lead an immoral lifestyle. The angel given by God by blessing moves away from the one who blasphemes.
- Sanctified things cannot be used for boasting, vanity and pride. In this case, God's blessing does not work.
Advice: We are not saints. What to do if you want (need) to sanctify, but there are breakdowns. We must repent immediately. Ask God for forgiveness, and try not to repeat vile acts in the face of the Heavenly Forces, whom the Lord sent to protect from troubles.
When and why to read a prayer
Orthodoxy refers to the faith that attaches great importance to the material component of life and the sanctification of this sphere. There are prayers for the consecration of jewelry, clothing, and household appliances. This list ends with large investment items - business, cars and real estate. But usually such large purchases are blessed by a visiting priest.
Reading a prayer for the consecration of things
A prayer for the consecration of a new thing is a prayer request directed to the Lord for His blessing of the acquired item. This is required if a person wants the thing to last a long time and bring only benefits.
Additional articles:
It’s worth stepping back a little and explaining that the modern belief in positive and negative energy, the energy imprints of movers and sellers - all this, from the point of view of the Orthodox faith, is nonsense. Christ never taught his disciples about any energy fields or auras. His teaching is simple:
- love the Lord;
- love your neighbor;
- seek the Kingdom of God first;
- repent of your sins;
- strive to be perfect, like your Heavenly Father.
Important!
There is no word anywhere about auras or negative energy. The Church, following the Son of God, does not pay attention to such esoteric teachings and in every possible way nips them in the bud. Orthodox believers should also abstain from this. Since ancient times, laying the foundation for a house or temple was consecrated; all utensils were consecrated in the temple; jewelry (neck crosses, etc.), as well as food and water, were brought to be consecrated. It is normal to want only good things around you that have been blessed by the priest.
But an Orthodox believer should understand that it is not necessary to illuminate the purchase; this will not make it unclean.
Moreover, all mystical teachings about energy should be avoided.
But if a person wants to consecrate a purchase, he has the right to do so. There are various traditions for consecrating objects (bringing them to the temple, inviting a priest, etc.), but the ritual itself in any case involves prayer over the object and consecrating it with holy water.
The Orthodox walk in safety
The prayer given for the consecration of every thing, read by a layman, benefits only those who are within the church fence.
Regularly participates in the Liturgy, confesses and receives Communion. The rite of consecration includes Psalm 90 “Alive in Help...”. Translated into modern Russian, the first line sounds like this: God helps those who are under His “roof”, that is, those who are churched. If you carefully read the text, it explains what a person receives with the blessing of God. How the Angels care about him, carry him in their arms so that he does not stumble anywhere. The formula for protection from all evil is also given there - this is the Name of the Lord. In any situation, you just have to call on Him, everything will be resolved, the problems will go away, there will be no need. Believers walk in safety when they trust in Jesus Christ.
By the way: To paraphrase a well-known aphorism, we can voice the formula for well-being: A stupid person always gets into trouble. Smart - he will always find a way out of a difficult situation. The wise man, who has the Blessing of God, does not fall into them.
The Need for Sanctification
The Orthodox tradition insists that matter in any form is subject to the influence of subtle energies or forces, which in nature can be either demonic, that is, evil, or beneficial, emanating from God. Based on this theory, the Orthodox Church in its practice strives to bring blessed energy everywhere, driving out the unclean. Therefore, adherents of this branch of Christianity consecrate their homes, cars, clothes, furniture and even pets. In special cases, for example, to consecrate an apartment, a priest is invited to perform a complex ceremony. As for household items, everything is simpler - the layman is offered to read independently a prayer for the consecration of every thing. After it is pronounced, the thing to be blessed should be sprinkled. As a result of these actions, the object is considered cleansed and blessed from above.
There are several prayers for this case. One of them can definitely be found in almost any prayer book. Below is the most popular and simplest one.
It is necessary to sanctify!
Space, elements, objects surrounding us must be sanctified. Nature requires this. Man himself needs holiness. Everything is defiled by sins, corrupted by us and demons. Without grace, we are at risk, attracting:
- a disease that can be avoided;
- suffering; sorrow;
- material loss, etc.
Securing the situation is everyone's need. This is what church consecration is for. First of all, the person himself, for he is a temple for the Holy Spirit. Then - the surrounding space, objects, things, sources of water, land (fruits, harvests). This is the only way to get emergency help, health improvement, and fulfillment of prayer requests.
The result we came to:
- A Christian must sanctify the space in which he is located: housing, transport, premises, living creatures, fields, objects, things. Of course within reasonable limits. This will protect you from troubles.
- You need to start with yourself. Using the Sacraments of the Church, we become a “battery”, an accumulator of the Grace given in Communion. The name of Christ will become a “talisman” if you correctly understand the essence of faith.
- Sanctification is a call to the “emergency” Heavenly Forces, obliging one to behave accordingly. This means: to meet God halfway, not to make “friendships” with the enemies of the human race and the Lord.
- In order not to turn away the Blessing of God, you cannot combine sanctification and paganism. Practice fortune telling, horoscopes, esotericism, spiritualism, go to psychics, shamans and sorcerers. Even occult objects should not be nearby.
Conclusion: God's blessing (sanctification, acquisition of grace) will open the world from a completely different side. It's hard to explain in words, but this is when things get resolved and obstacles disappear. Transport breaks down only when you need to be delayed in order to miss a plane that is destined to crash.
Comments on prayer
Creator and Creator of the human race!
In Orthodox prayers, this is a traditional appeal to God.
Giver of spiritual grace, giver of eternal salvation!
The theme of salvation is touched upon here, because it is in the light of sotereology (the doctrine of salvation) that Orthodoxy looks at the world. God sanctifies matter, not simply expelling evil from it, but spiritualizing it, thereby deifying and transforming it. In the orthodox tradition, it is the material world and the material body that are subject to salvation. Therefore, the process of consecrating even a new handkerchief or shirt is an anticipation and at the same time part of this great redemption of matter from corruption and death. Prayer for the sanctification of every thing emphasizes this connection.
You, Lord, yourself sent down your Holy Spirit with a blessing from above on this thing.
It is the Holy Spirit - the third hypostasis of the Trinity - that performs the function of the sanctifier of the world, as a special dynamic form of the presence of the deity.
Let it be armed with the power of Heaven's intercession for those who wish to use it.
Here, the prayer for the consecration of every thing affirms a subtle, grace-filled connection between the object and Heaven, that is, the spiritual kingdom of God.
May she be strong for the salvation of the body and for intercession and help through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.
The words “through Christ” reflect the Orthodox belief that the salvation of the world is possible only through the atoning sacrifice of Jesus Christ on the cross.

Theophan the Recluse on grace
Quote:
“All the grace that comes from God through the holy cross, holy icons, holy water, relics, consecrated bread (artos, antidor, prosphora) and others, including the Most Holy Communion of the Body and Blood of Christ, has power only for those
who are worthy of this grace through prayers of repentance, repentance, humility, service to people, works of mercy and the manifestation of other Christian virtues.
But if they are not there, then this grace will not save, it does not act automatically, like a talisman, and is useless for the wicked and imaginary Christians (without virtues).”
How to Make Prayer Effective
Reading a text taken from a prayer book instills peace and confidence in the soul. But in itself it has no power - it is not a magic spell. One must put one’s soul into words, which is sanctified not by verbal formulations, but by faith.
About the author About the book
The ability to believe in God is a gift from above, because man by nature is a fallen being and incapable of good. Everything good he does is put into his heart by the Lord or His angels.
But there is good news: if faith is still weak, then it can be made stronger! This depends entirely on the person himself. You need to go to church as often as possible, read the Holy Scriptures, and pray. It is not without reason that when people are under the arches of a church, they feel their souls become lighter.
Such places are called places of prayer - they store the good thoughts and wishes of thousands of people who have been here, under the same arches. It is quite possible to read a prayer for a new thing in the temple, asking the Lord in your own words that it will serve well for your prosperity and well-being. When you come home, sprinkle it with holy water - and the job is done.
