The meaning of the name Timofey
Timothy came into the Russian tradition from the ancient Greek language thanks to the active influence of Byzantium on Rus' in the period after the adoption of Christianity. The Greeks knew this name even in the pre-Christian era. The word contains two important roots:
- “timo” – respect, honor, fear;
- "theus" - God.
Thus, the name can literally be translated from Greek as “one who respects God,” “God-fearing.” In the Orthodox Saints one can find many Timothys, who by their veneration of the Lord have earned a place in the host of saints.
What is the fate and character of the bearer of this name?
Character strengths: love of life, activity, positive outlook on life. This is a calm person who does not remember any grudges.
Weaknesses: he can be henpecked, both in childhood (he listens to his mother) and in adulthood (Timoshi’s girlfriend or wife replaces his mother). Sometimes he gets used to the role of a quiet person so much that he cannot adequately react to an insult. He is courteous with women, but does not respect them (which is why his own wife often turns out to be unhappy, even dissatisfied in sex).
Fate:
- Childhood. This is a cheerful child who never sits still - a real fidget, forcing those around him to burst into laughter at his antics. Very curious. Often he is friends not with peers, but with older guys.
- Youth. At school, the guy cannot be called diligent, but he catches knowledge on the fly, thanks to which he studies well. He has a hundred friends, in whose company Tema loves to have fun. However, almost everyone in his party is girls who adore the guy’s pretty appearance and gentle disposition.
- Mature years. This man dreams of “making his way” in life and for the sake of this he is ready to work for a long time in a position he doesn’t like. It will be great if he takes a girl from his own circle, since a different upbringing of the chosen one could ruin Timofey’s marriage. It is also important that he and his beloved have a lot in common (friends, hobbies, and, if possible, work).
It is believed that the ideal couple for the bearer of the name would be Elena, Natalya, Marianna or Svetlana. And with women like Olga, Evdokia or Marina, marriage will look like continuous trials.
Character of the birthday boy
Children like little Timoshka are called “angels” for their obedient disposition. He doesn't cause problems for his parents and rarely indulges. Conflict situations with other children are excluded due to his gentle disposition. Sometimes it may seem that Timofey is too soft, but this is not so, he simply knows how to put the comfort of his loved ones at the forefront, relegating personal desires to the background.
Closedness and caution in expressing his emotions can reveal Timofey as a closed person. If he encounters negativity in his direction, he will never respond in kind. But there is a bad trait - rancor. Tim tends to remember all the grievances for a long time, which often leads to the dissolution of relationships between him and other people. Usually Timofey is an introvert who feels comfortable only with the closest people. He knows how to keep his word, keep his promises, and you can rely on him. But behind the secrecy often lies cunning and strict adherence to one’s specific plans. This is where all the ambiguity of Timothy lies.
The most famous saints bearing this name
- Martyrs Timothy and Mavra. The young people got married just 20 days before the martyrdom. During the persecution of Christians at the end of the 3rd century, they were forced to sacrifice to the pagan gods, but they refused. In addition, Timothy, being a church reader, did not give away his sacred books. He did not flinch even during the torment. The Romans persuaded his wife Mavra to dress up and beg her husband to renounce the faith. Timothy shamed the woman by reminding her that she did not need to fear his death, since the Lord had prepared eternal life for them. Then Mavra renounced her wealth and loudly recognized herself as a Christian. The martyrs were crucified on crosses.
- Martyr Timothy of Sicily (suffered for the faith along with Agapius and their teacher Babyla). In Sicily they converted many pagans to the true faith. They were tortured for a long time and then executed. Their bodies were thrown into the fire, but the flames did not touch them. Sicilian Christians found their bodies and buried them.
- Prince Timofey (Dovmont), Pskov prince (1266-1299). He defended his city from the Germans and Lithuanians, made it independent from Novgorod. The Russian Orthodox Church considers him a saint after the Batory invasion.
And about Saint Timothy, the saint, bishop of Ephesus, apostle of the 70 and hieromartyr, disciple of the apostle Paul (it was to him that the holy apostle addressed in his “Epistle to Timothy”), you can hear in this short video:

Pray to Christ God for the salvation of our souls.
Troparion to St. Timothy of Olympia and St. Eustathius of Antioch
God of our fathers, who always deals with us according to Your meekness, do not remove Your mercy from us, but through their prayers, peacefully govern our lives.
Life of the Apostle Timothy
Timothy of Ephesus was descended from a Greek and a Jewish woman. It was the mother, a convinced believer, who taught her son to believe in and worship the one God from childhood. The father never opposed his son's Jewish upbringing. At a conscious age, he was baptized after meeting the Apostle Paul, who preached the Gospel throughout the Lycaonian cities. Their meeting took place more than once.
While still a child, Timothy saw his mother receiving the Apostle Paul at her home, giving him food and shelter and asking him to teach her son the word of God. Unable to stay in one place for a long time, Paul was forced to move on with his sermons. Leaving trusted people to teach Timothy the religious canons, he went to other cities.
A few years later, the Apostle Paul decided to visit all the brethren in the cities where he had once read the Gospel. Seeing Timothy, he realized that he had achieved perfection in religious knowledge and made him his constant companion, with the aim of further preaching the Gospel. He traveled with Paul through many lands: Macedonia, Phrygia, Mysia. In 65, Timothy became bishop of the Ephesian Church. His death befell him in the same city.
During the celebration in honor of the Roman god, the streets of the city were flooded with idolaters who shouted blasphemous words and held orgies. Trying to reason with the pagans, the Apostle Timothy went out into the square, where he was stoned to death by an angry crowd.
The relics of the saint are kept in Constantinople, with the relics of Andrew the First-Called and the Apostle Luke.
How does the Holy Apostle help?
The prayer to Saint Timothy, sent by believers, gives a person the strength to maintain the firmness of faith in moments when it is weakest. Timothy's connection with Paul was so strong that it can be said that Timothy was also close to God himself, because Paul was a faithful disciple of Jesus Christ.
A prayer read before the icon to Saint Timothy will lead to the fact that the unbeliever (for whom they are praying) will see the Lord and convert to the Christian faith. Also, prayer to Timothy helps to get rid of temptations and temptations, and to guide the lost on the true path. In numerous churches in Russia, parishioners pray for the strengthening of the Russian Orthodox Church and the prosperity of Orthodoxy throughout the world.
