December

In December, the memory of confessor Georgy Sedov is honored. He was not a clergyman, but as a layman he served as the elder of various churches. In the 30s and 40s he was repeatedly subjected to repression by the Soviet authorities. One day, part of the stairs collapsed on him, as a result of which Georgy received serious injuries. He died from them a year later, having never been able to recover from the illness.

Another December Saint George is the stylite of the same name, whose feast day falls on December 31st. There is no more information about him.

Egor's name day. Possible dates for Yegor's name day

Name day is a holiday also known as Angel Day. It is dedicated to the day of remembrance of the saint whose name the person bears. This saint, according to church tradition, is the heavenly patron for him and for everyone who is named in his honor.

Thus, it turns out that this is a purely Christian or even only Orthodox (partly Catholic) tradition, since Protestant churches do not recognize the veneration of saints. Therefore, for everyone who is not an Orthodox Christian (or Catholic), such a holiday does not exist.

In this article we will provide a list of saints who are patrons of people named Yegor.

About name days

Name days are associated exclusively with the name that the baby was given in the sacrament of baptism. Accordingly, an unbaptized person cannot celebrate this day, no matter what name he bears.

Moreover, naming in the font does not happen just like that, but in honor of some holy saint who becomes a special intercessor before God, as Orthodox Christians believe. In the future, it is impossible to change the church name and, therefore, the patron saint.

The only exception is monastic tonsure, in which a person takes a new name.

The date of the name day after baptism will be considered the day on which the memory of the saint is honored according to the church calendar. Of course, many of them were called the same during their lifetime. Therefore, by choosing a specific name, you can choose the saint who bore it.

If a person was baptized in childhood, and there is no information left about which saint he was named after, proceed as follows: find in the calendar the day of remembrance of the saint of the same name, closest to the person’s birthday. It will be considered the name day.

But if you want to choose a specific person for whom you feel special sympathy, then you can do so, neglecting formal procedures.

Egor's name day

It must be said right away that there is no such name in the calendar. Yegor celebrates his name day in the church way on the days of remembrance of Saint George - this is exactly how Yegorov is baptized. And most often their patron is, of course, the Great Martyr George, whom we know from the coat of arms of Russia and ten-kopeck coins.

But actually, this is not the only option, since in the church calendar there are a lot of saints with the name George (Egor). Orthodox name days can be associated with any of them. Previously, this name, by the way, was used as an epithet for the god Zeus.

Below we provide a basic list of all St. Georges by month.

June

The 19th of this month is the day of remembrance of St. Reverend George. Unfortunately, apart from his name and rank of glorification as a saint, nothing more is known about him. Moreover, there are very, very many such unknown saints in the church calendar.

July

On July 4, the memory of a Russian saint named George is celebrated. During his lifetime he was a monk, a priest with the rank of archimandrite. He died in Nizhny Novgorod in 1932, at the hands of the Soviet authorities.

July 16 is another day of an unknown saint with the same name.

August

The 3rd and 13th of the month are Yegor’s name days, celebrated in honor of the two Saints George. Both of them are martyrs. And about both, other than this, nothing is known.

September

September 21 is the day when the confessor of the church, Archimandrite George (Mkheidze) is remembered.

October

At the beginning of October, on the 2nd, the blessed Prince Georgy Olegovich is commemorated. He was the ruler of the city of Chernigov, as well as the Grand Duke of Kyiv, until he was betrayed by the conspirators and overthrown from the princely throne.

Then he bore the name Igor, and he was named George when he was tonsured a monk, which he was forced to accept by force in order to avoid murder. However, they killed him anyway, leading him out of the church for execution right in the middle of the service.

The body of the murdered prince-monk was thrown in the city square.

November

In November, Yegor's name day is celebrated, whose patron is the martyr Georgy Yurenev. At the beginning of the 20th century, he lived in Vitebsk, where he worked as a judge. But in the 20s he was exiled.

And in the 30s they also charged him with counter-revolutionary activities.

Initially, he was sentenced to forced labor in correctional camps, but then the sentence was changed to the maximum penalty for participation in the activities of the Catacomb Church. The execution took place in 1937.

January

January 30 is a day dedicated to the memory of the martyr killed in 1838 in the Turkish city of Paramitya. The reason for accusing this saint was that, being a born Muslim, he professed Christianity. He was seized in the market square and demanded to renounce Christ, and having received a refusal, the young man was hanged on the city gates.

February

February 10 is the day of the unknown Saint George.

February 17 is the day of remembrance of yet another holy Prince George, but this time of Vladimir.

March

March 23 is the day of the unknown saint.

March 18 is also the day of an unknown saint, but already a martyr.

April

April 17 – celebration of the saint from the Peloponnese island.

May

May 6 is Yegor’s name day, which falls on the day of remembrance of St. George the Victorious. Glorified as a great martyr, his head was cut off for his faith in Christ by order of Emperor Diocletian.

Conclusion

This is not a complete list of Saint Georges - the patrons of those who were given the name Yegor at baptism. His name day can be chosen from thousands of options. It should be remembered that there is no single register of all Orthodox saints. Different churches in different regions have their own saints, unknown in other parishes, and therefore the official calendar cannot accommodate them all.

When Egor celebrates Angel Day

In Orthodoxy, as well as throughout Christianity, a guardian angel is considered to be the holy spirit sent by the Lord to help and save a person at birth in difficult times. Accordingly, no one can know the name of this holy spirit, which means that name day and angel day are different days and different names.

At the same time, a person is usually born not when his birth was recorded in the maternity hospital, but when this person came to God, that is, to undergo the sacrament of baptism. It is on the day of baptism that God gives a person a mentor, who is the holy spirit.

Life of St. George the Victorious

According to information about the life of St. George, set forth by Simeon Metaphrastus, George was born in Lebanon, into a family of pious parents with high social status and material wealth.

While studying military craft, he proved himself to be a talented student and a brave warrior.

Having achieved professional success, George received the patronage of Emperor Diocletian, who was the most cruel persecutor of Christians.

During the court hearing, which was attended by George, a severe sentence was announced to one Christian believer. This was the reason why George renounced his emperor and converted to Christianity.

In one of the meetings of the future saint with the emperor, the first began to denounce the inhumanity and meaninglessness of the pagan religion, for which the emperor ordered George to be tortured, knocking out of him a renunciation of Christ. In prison, he steadfastly endured torture, then the pagans wheeled him on the wheel and ultimately beheaded him.

The Great Martyr passed away in 303 AD. e., enduring suffering, in the name of the Christian Lord. So he won victory over demons and human cruelty, without giving up, but maintaining the steadfastness of his faith and unshakable spirit. For this he was called the Victorious.

Icon of St. George the Victorious

The image of the saint became popular in ancient times. On icons, George was traditionally depicted with a sword in his hands on horseback, striking a serpent with his blow. This is the second version, according to which he has the second name Victorious.

Legend has it that in Beirut (his hometown) there lived a snake on the shore of a lake, which annually destroyed the village, eating everything in its path. Residents, in order to appease this monster, sacrificed one of their fellow tribesmen on a certain day of the year, drawing lots each time.

One day, when a young girl was supposed to be the victim, she was saved by a young man who appeared out of nowhere on a white horse and thrust his spear into this snake, freeing the inhabitants from the scourge forever.

It is curious that this miracle occurred after the death of George. Thus, his spirit, according to legend, is holy and protects the weak.

After that miracle, the village believed in the Christian God and renounced paganism.

Therefore, you can often see the image of George on icons, as a horseman with a spear. However, there are other options for its image. His image is painted in a peaceful state, without armor and weapons of war, indicating that while in heaven, he does not fight with anyone, but praises the Lord and peacefully watches people. This icon carries the energy of calm and humility.

She depicts a saint up to his chest and in one hand he holds a spear, leaning it against his chest. The spear does not look intimidating and symbolizes the defense of faith, which is in the heart of every Christian.

Prayer to Saint George

When turning to the saint with prayer, believers most often ask for help before the upcoming harvest, since people call this man Yegory the Brave.

Serbs and Bulgarians, stretching out their hands to the sky and calling on St. George for help, ask him for rain. In Georgia, people turn to him with prayer if they want good luck on a hunt or for the health of the offspring of livestock.

Europe turns to the saint with a request to save him from poisonous snakes and dangerous diseases.

The cult of St. George spread throughout the entire earth. Believers in all countries perpetuate it not only with icons in temples and churches, but also by applying it to religious paraphernalia. His image is on many coats of arms and coins. Famous personalities are named after him, and churches annually celebrate the saint's feast day with a service that attracts hundreds of parishioners.
