Akathist to Sergius of Radonezh: when they read the full text of the address to the saint

What do they ask the saint for?

Sergius of Radonezh is a great Russian saint. The fact that he would devote his life to serving the Lord was known long before his birth. The world called him Bartholomew. From early childhood he showed a desire to serve the Lord. After the death of his parents, he went to serve in a monastery where he was named Sergius.

In those days, few people were eager to study. It so happened that girls sought to quickly get married and have children, and boys did very difficult work to feed their families. But despite such foundations, parents still sent Bartholomew to study. Knowledge was very difficult for him, and he was an outcast in the class. The boy was very worried about this.

When a miracle happened, he met an angel and asked him for help. From then on, the monk became literate and could read and write well. The saint performed real miracles. He healed and resurrected people.

Today, pilgrims from all over the world come to his face. They ask for help in the following situations:

  • pacify pride
  • pray for help in various needs,
  • asking for healing from serious illnesses.

Many believers also pray to the saint for help in teaching their children. Students come to the face of the saint before exams and tests. He will definitely help everyone who needs it.

How to order a prayer service

Among all the petitions, the most popular is the prayer service to Sergius of Radonezh for the student. No wonder. After all, he is the patron saint of students and schoolchildren.

In order to pass the exam successfully and study easily, you need to visit the temple and leave a note for a petition. Be sure to approach the image of the saint. Place a lighted candle in front of his face and say a prayer.

As a rule, prayers are read daily for 40 days. After this period has expired, you can order it again if you wish.

You can also say a prayer request to the saint at home. But for this it is necessary that there is an icon with his image at home. The petition can be read either in your own words or in the text from the prayer book. The main thing is that thoughts are laid out clearly and specifically.

If you say prayers at home, you must do it in a secluded place so that no one disturbs you. You must place a lit lamp or church candle in front of the face. You should not expect that prayer will help knowledge come into your head.

We need to continue studying.

It will just be much easier to remember everything. After all, it is impossible to achieve anything without independent effort. The saints only help us bring the work we have started to a successful result.

Text of the prayer service to St. Sergius of Radonezh:

“O heavenly citizen of Jerusalem, Reverend Father Sergius! Look upon us graciously and lead those who are devoted to the earth to the heights of heaven. You are a mountain in Heaven; We are on earth, below, removed from you, not only by place, but by our sins and iniquities; but to you, as our kin, we resort and cry: teach us to walk in your way, enlighten us and guide us.

It is characteristic of you, Our Father, to have compassion and love for mankind: living on earth, you should not only care about your own salvation, but also about all those who come to you.

Your instructions were the reed of a scribe, a cursive writer, inscribing the verbs of life on everyone’s heart. You did not only heal bodily illnesses, but more than spiritual ones, an elegant physician appeared, and your whole holy life was a mirror of all virtues.

Even though you were so holy, more holy than God, on earth: how much more are you now in Heaven!

Today you stand before the Throne of the Unapproachable Light, and in it, like in a mirror, see all our needs and petitions; You are together with the Angels, rejoicing over the one sinner who repents. And God’s love for mankind is inexhaustible, and your boldness towards Him is great: do not stop crying to the Lord for us.

Through your intercession, ask our All-Merciful God for the peace of His Church, under the sign of the militant Cross, agreement in faith and unity of wisdom, destruction of vanity and schism, affirmation in good deeds, healing for the sick, consolation for the sad, intercession for the offended, help for the needy.

Do not disgrace us, who come to you with faith. Even though you are unworthy of such a father and intercessor, you, an imitator of God’s love for mankind, made us worthy by turning from evil deeds to good living.

All God-enlightened Russia, filled with your miracles and blessed by your mercies, confesses you to be their patron and intercessor.

Show your ancient mercies, and those whom you helped your father, do not reject us, their children, who are marching towards you in their footsteps.

We believe that you are present with us in spirit. Where the Lord is, as His word teaches us, there His servant will be. You are a faithful servant of the Lord, and I exist everywhere with God, you are in Him, and He is in you, and moreover, you are with us in body. Behold your incorruptible and life-giving relics, like a priceless treasure, may God grant us miracles.

Before them, as I live for you, we fall down and pray: accept our prayers and offer them on the altar of God’s mercy, so that we may receive grace from you and timely help in our needs.

Strengthen us, the faint-hearted, and confirm us in the faith, so that we undoubtedly hope to receive all the good things from the mercy of the Master through your prayers.

Do not cease to rule your spiritual flock, gathered by you, with the rod of spiritual wisdom: help those who struggle, raise up the weakened, hasten to bear the yoke of Christ in complacency and patience, and guide us all in peace and repentance, end our lives and settle with hope in the blessed bosom of Abraham, where you now rest joyfully after your labors and struggles, glorifying with all the saints God, glorified in the Trinity, the Father, and the Son, and the Holy Spirit. Amen."

Your instructions were with the reed of a scribe, a cursive writer, who inscribes the verbs of life on everyone’s heart. You did not only heal bodily illnesses, but more than spiritual ones, you appeared as an graceful physician; and your whole holy life will be a mirror of every virtue. Even if you were so much holy than God on earth, how much more are you now in Heaven! Today you stand before the Throne of the Unapproachable Light and in it, like in a mirror, see all our needs and petitions; You are together with the Angels, rejoicing over the one sinner who repents. And God’s love for mankind is inexhaustible, and your boldness towards Him is great; do not stop crying to the Lord for us. By your intercession, ask from our All-Merciful God the peace of His Church, under the sign of the militant cross, agreement in faith and unity of wisdom, destruction of vanity and schism, confirmation in good deeds, healing for the sick, consolation for the sad, intercession for the offended, help for the needy. Do not disgrace us, who come to you with faith. Even though we are unworthy of such a father and intercessor, you, being an imitator of God’s love for mankind, make us worthy by turning from evil deeds to good living. All God-enlightened Russia, filled with your miracles and blessed by your mercies, confesses that you are their patron and intercessor. Show your ancient mercies and those whom your father helped, do not reject us, their children, who are marching towards you in their footsteps. Before them, as you live on dry land, we fall down and pray: accept our prayers and offer them on the altar of God’s mercy, so that we may receive grace from you and timely help in our needs. Strengthen our cowardice and confirm us in faith, so that we undoubtedly hope to receive all the good things from the mercy of the Master through your prayers. Do not cease to rule your spiritual flock, gathered by you, with the rod of spiritual wisdom: help those who struggle, raise up the weakened, hasten to bear the yoke of Christ in complacency and patience, and guide us all in peace and repentance, end our life and settle with hope in the blessed bosom of Abraham, where You now rest joyfully after your labors and struggles, glorifying God with all the saints, glorified in the Trinity, the Father and the Son and the Holy Spirit. Amen.

Troparion, tone 4

Even an ascetic of virtues, as a true warrior of Christ God, you labored in great passion in the temporal life, in singing, vigils and fasting, and the image became your disciple: in the same way, the Most Holy Spirit dwelled in you, by whose action you are brightly adorned. But as you have boldness towards the Holy Trinity, remember the flock that you gathered, wise, and do not forget, as you promised, visiting your children, Reverend Sergius, our Father.

Kontakion, tone 8

Having been wounded by Christ’s love, reverend, and following that irrevocable desire, you hated all carnal pleasure, and like the sun, you shone for your Fatherland: with this Christ also enriched you with the gift of miracles. Remember us, who honor your blessed memory, and we call to you: Rejoice, Sergius the God-Wise.

Troparion to the Saint, tone 8

Thus, having given residence to the Trinity, you enlightened with your miracles all those who come to you by faith, and abundantly provided healing to everyone. Our Father Sergius, pray to Christ God to save our souls.

After the appearance of hymns dedicated to other Heavenly Higher Powers, the word “akathist” began to denote a specific genre. Works in this style have a special compositional structure. During the Byzantine period, akathists were compiled according to the original model.

In the 14th century, a type of liturgical chant found its greatest development and application in the Russian Orthodox Church. In the 14th and early 15th centuries, Greek (Byzantine) translations began to be used in prayer services. Starting from the 17th century, own akathists dedicated to St. Sergius of Radonezh.

The first Russian akathist was compiled by Prince S. I. Shakhovsky (without publication). The second (in 1689) - S. Medvedev. Information about the author of the third, introduced into liturgical practice, differs. According to one version, it was written in 1690 by an unknown hymnographer, according to another, by the Athonite monk Pachomius Logothetes, who arrived in the Russian capital in the mid-15th century.

The second and third hymns were published in 1788 by Metropolitan Platon of Moscow and Kolomna. Metropolitan Platon Levshin (lived 1737-1812) was an enlightened man with poetic and pedagogical talent. Thanks to him, the third akathist to Sergius of Radonezh became known and introduced into church practice.
