Temple in honor of the Intercession of the Blessed Virgin Mary
- Orthodox church in the city of Borovsk, courtyard of the St. Pafnutev Borovsky Monastery. This is a unique, the only wooden temple of the 17th century in the Kaluga region, erected by Russian woodworkers from pine logs without a single nail, earlier than the famous Kizhi. Such temples in our climate do not survive for more than two hundred years without restoration. By the grace of God, the prayers of St. Paphnutius, and behind the grave, who honors his parents, the Most Holy Theotokos has preserved her temple for almost four centuries. According to local legend, Napoleon, retreating from Moscow, tried to set fire to the temple, but the fire “did not start.” In 1941, the temple was hit by a shell, which miraculously did not explode.
History[edit]
The Church of the Intercession of the Blessed Virgin Mary is located near the St. Pafnutev Borovsky Monastery on the outskirts of the city of Borovsk. The history of the temple is inextricably linked with the founder of the St. Paphnuty Borovsky Monastery, the Venerable Paphnuty Borovsky of All Russia, the wonderworker.
On this site was the Vysoko-Pokrovsky Borovsky Monastery, founded in the middle of the 14th century. In 1414, the Monk Paphnutius came to this monastery and was placed under the leadership of the Monk Nikita of Serpukhov, a disciple of the Monk Sergius of Radonezh.
For twenty years the Monk Paphnutius was a monk of the Pokrovsky Vysokovsky Monastery, and in 1434 he became its abbot. On April 23, 1444, the monk left this monastery and settled on the Isterma River, where he founded a new monastery in honor of the Nativity of the Most Holy Theotokos.
At the beginning of the 17th century. In the Intercession Monastery there were two churches: one white stone in the name of the Intercession of the Most Holy Theotokos, the second wooden in the name of the Entry of the Lord into Jerusalem and wooden cells. In 1610, the monastery buildings were burned and destroyed by Lithuanian people and Poles. In 1615 and 1618 By letters of grant from Tsar Mikhail Fedorovich, the Pafnutiev Monastery was ordered to revive the Vysokovsky monastery. According to the Watch Book, by 1621 a new wooden Church of the Intercession of the Most Pure Virgin Mary and cells were erected.
During the construction of the temple, icons and utensils from the Pafnutiev Monastery were transferred to it. Several ancient icons from the Church of the Intercession have been preserved: the icon of the Mother of God of Petrovskaya, painted in 1690, and a number of icons from the iconostasis of the temple. These icons are now in the Kaluga Regional Art Museum.
After the ruin, the Intercession Monastery was assigned to the Pafnutiev Monastery. Monks were sent here from the Pafnutiev Monastery to live. The wooden Church of the Intercession of the Most Pure Mother of God continued to stand in the monastery. The temple porch was surrounded on three sides by a gallery with three porches. There was a bell tower on it. There were two cells in the monastery “about the two upper dwellings.” All the monastic buildings in the shape of a quadrangle were surrounded by a fence with large beautiful gates.
In connection with the secularization of church lands in 1764, the Vysoko-Pokrovsky Monastery received the status of ascribed one and was attached to the St. Paphnutie Monastery, and subsequently to the city Church of the Exaltation of the Cross; its territory was turned into a city cemetery.
In 1868, near the altar, where, according to local legend, the parents of St. Paphnutia, a chapel was built.
During the years of Soviet power, the temple was closed and gradually began to deteriorate.
In 1994, the temple was transferred to the Kaluga diocese of the Russian Orthodox Church. In 1999, the temple was given the status of the Metochion of the St. Paphnutiev Borovsky Monastery.
In 2008-2009 The restoration of the temple took place, as a result of which the logs that had fallen into disrepair were replaced, the lost galleries and the basement of the temple were restored.
Borovskie Kizhi
Having driven along a dusty country road to the outskirts of Borovsk, we found ourselves in Skazka. In the middle of the city cemetery, surrounded by flowers and trees, stood a carved wooden church.
There was a path through green trees and bushes with very beautiful lanterns hanging around it.
A little winding, the road led us to the temple.
It can rightfully be called Borovskie Kizhi, since was erected by master woodworkers from pine logs absolutely without nails .
The walls are made of thick logs. The air combines the wonderful aroma of flowering trees and fresh logs.
And what huge doors there are with forged hinges and heavy handles!
The shape of the Intercession Church seems to resemble a huge ship sailing above the bustle of life.
We decided to go up to its deck. From here you can enjoy a stunning view of the surrounding area of Borovsk.
In the distance you can see the St. Paphnutiev Borovsky Monastery, with which the history of this Intercession Church is closely connected.
When you are standing in front of the temple, if you go to the left, you can see an observation deck a few meters away. Only then do you understand why this place is called Vysokoye. The view from here is simply fantastic!
Miracles and return to life
Borovskaya Church of the Intercession on Vysokoye is a unique temple with a history of four centuries.
It is worth noting that in the local climate the temple can last no more than two hundred years. And this one managed to survive a much longer period. The grace of God, there is no other way to say it. And this is not the only evidence of heavenly protection.
There is a legend that Napoleon, during his retreat from Moscow, wanted to set fire to the temple. But nothing came of it: the fire simply did not flare up. And in 1941, an enemy shell hit the temple, but for unknown reasons it did not explode.
During the Soviet years, the temple was still closed. Most of the logs are destroyed. The masterpiece of ancient Russian wooden architecture undoubtedly needs urgent help.
2008–2009 – the famous Borovsk church on Vysokoye begins its new life. A large-scale restoration took place. It was possible to restore the temple to its original appearance. The old log house, which had fallen into disrepair, was replaced with new structures. The lost walkway galleries and basement were restored.
On October 18, 2010, a significant event took place - the consecration of the Church of the Intercession of the Most Holy Theotokos in Borovsk. The ceremony was performed by Metropolitan Clement of Kaluga and Borovsk.

This trip of ours to Borovskie Kizhi took place on June 14, 2015. Read about other temples and monasteries I visited here. All the places in the Kaluga region that I visited are on this map.
Write below in the comments whether you liked the virtual walk around Borovskie Kizhi and whether you would like to come to this amazing place yourself.
Holy spring
The Church of the Intercession is located on a hill, and if you go down a little lower to the Protva River, an amazing place is now being developed here.
It was a hot summer day. We drove down the road from the temple about 300 meters and left the car in a spacious parking lot.
Here is the famous (not only in Borovsk) source of the Intercession of the Mother of God.
A spacious font has been built for believers: separate for men and women.
On a small hill there is an observation deck on which the Worship Cross is installed.
The view from here of Borovsk and the Russian expanses is simply amazing. You can probably contemplate this beauty endlessly.
Forests, fields, river. Between them are village houses and the domes of numerous churches.
A new wooden building is being erected to the left of the bathhouse and the Worship Cross. They say that there will be a refectory here for visiting pilgrims. The spacious wooden hut looks great. There is a real Russian stove inside. Above the carved veranda is a wooden dove.
Construction was in full swing in June 2015.
A large staircase consisting of marble squares leads to the new building. It looks unusual and very elegant.
The area of the source left an indelible impression. Probably because everything here is made with great love.
Our days
Now the Church of the Intercession and the entire surrounding area are the courtyard of the Holy Paphnutva Borovsky Monastery.
The inside of the temple turned out to be very cozy.
The small room looked simple, even somehow homely.
But at the same time, there was something very important here, which is why I didn’t want to leave here at all.
The surrounding nature is also incredibly picturesque. Everything around is well maintained.
It feels like they perform their duties here from the heart and with great love.
