Church of the Intercession of the Blessed Virgin Mary in Yasenevo

- an Orthodox church in the Moscow district of Yasenevo (South-Western Administrative District). The decision to build the temple was made in August 2001, construction began in the fall of 2008.

The projects carried out in the Church of the Intercession of the Blessed Virgin Mary are truly unique. Here in one place are collected exact copies of the five greatest Christian shrines - the Holy Sepulcher, the Stone of Anointing, the Tomb of the Mother of God, Golgotha and the Star of Bethlehem, as well as the Prison, the Water Carrier from Cana of Galilee and the Column of the Holy Fire.

History[edit]

The blessing for the creation of a new shrine in the capital city was given by His Holiness Patriarch of Moscow and All Rus' Alexy II. He signed a decree appointing Abbot (now Archimandrite) Melchizedek (Artyukhin), who is also the rector of the Church of the Holy Apostles Peter and Paul, the Moscow metochion of the Vvedensky stauropegial monastery of Optina Pustyn, as rector of the temple under construction.

Already in June 2009, His Holiness Patriarch Kirill, with special prayers, performed the solemn ceremony of founding the Intercession Church in Yasenevo.

The architectural ensemble of the Intercession Church combines Old Russian and Byzantine traditions of the 11th-12th centuries. The type of temple is cross-domed. In its plan, it represents a vast cruciform space, where light penetrates through tall narrow windows. The main dome, covered in gold, symbolizes heavenly glory. Small blue domes decorated with stars indicate that the temple is dedicated to the Virgin Mary. For the adjacent territory, the Moscow Institute of Ecology has developed a landscaping and landscaping project that will emphasize the grandeur of the temple complex and will allow it to be surrounded by appropriate beauty and splendor.

The total area of the temple with porches is 1425 square meters. m. Thus, it can accommodate up to 800 people at a time. The new temple will certainly become an architectural pearl not only of the Yasenevo district, but of the whole of Moscow. Already now it attracts the eye with its grandeur and pleases with the splendor of its interior decoration. At the moment, the lower chapel of the temple is completely finished and is already welcoming parishioners - in honor of the Archangel Michael. The exterior decoration of the temple is almost complete. Work is underway to construct a temple courtyard, in which a chapel is being erected in honor of the Prayer for the Chalice. The work on the interior decoration of the walls of the upper Church of the Intercession with Byzantine mosaics is also nearing completion.

The temple, the walls of which are completely lined with mosaics, is the dream of all church muralists. In the history of culture, few such monuments have been preserved. You can literally count them on your fingers. This is explained by the labor intensity and complexity of the mosaic laying process, and the high cost of mosaic work. The Church of the Intercession is waiting for its sponsors and patrons, whose name will go down in history, such as the name of the Byzantine court figure Theodore Metochites, without whose active charitable and organizational activities such a high level of mosaics and frescoes of the Chora Monastery in Constantinople would not exist.

Specialists of the highest level have been invited to carry out mosaic work in the upper church (and their front is truly huge). Suffice it to say that it is supposed to be decorated with a majestic image of Christ Pantocrator (Pantocrator) from the Cathedral of the Transfiguration of the Sicilian city of Cefalu (1148), created by invited Byzantine masters. This 12th-century image belongs to the best works of the Byzantine mosaic school and is one of the most beautiful images of the Lord Jesus in Christian monumental art. The fingers of the Savior’s right hand are folded for blessing; in his left hand He holds the Gospel, open on the verse: “I am the light of the world; Whoever follows Me will not walk in darkness, but will have the light of life” (John 8:12). It is quite obvious that the new pearl of church architecture will be able to shine in all its glory only thanks to the common efforts of caring people.

Currently, the interior space of the upper, Pokrovsky, church is still completely in scaffolding. But, despite this, ceremonial services are sometimes held there. A good tradition has become the congregational prayer of the parishioners and clergy of the new church before the start of all significant stages of construction work.

The Church of the Intercession is conceived as a multifunctional spiritual and educational center. Therefore, in its basement there are premises for a Sunday school, a conference room, and a bookstore. However, here the main part is also a temple, which needs to be described separately.

The lower baptismal church of the Intercession temple complex in Yasenevo was consecrated in honor of the holy Archangel of God Michael and other ethereal Heavenly Powers. In accordance with the purpose of this small temple, a marble font in the Byzantine style was built in its center.

The rest of the space of the Archangel Michael Church is given over to the implementation of a unique architectural project, called “Icon of the Holy Land”. According to the plan, which received the approval and full support of His Holiness Patriarch Kirill, here in one place are collected exact copies of the eight greatest Christian shrines - the Star of Bethlehem, the Water Carrier from Cana of Galilee, the Prison of the Lord, Golgotha, the Holy Sepulcher, the Stone of Anointing, the Tomb of the Mother of God, the Column of the Descent of the Blessed. Fire. This project has enormous spiritual, cultural and educational potential; it allows everyone who wants to touch the shrines of the Holy Land in Moscow - in the very heart of Russia!

Story

The Church of the Annunciation of the Blessed Virgin Mary in Petrovsky Park owes its appearance to Anna Dmitrievna, close to the imperial court, the wife of the actual chamberlain Pavel Petrovich Naryshkin. After the imperial permission to allocate land from Tverskaya Zastava to the park area for the construction of dachas in 1836, life in this area began to boil.

The grandiose buildings, erected in the Gothic and Moorish styles, amazed at their splendor. Titled persons, among them the Naryshkins, quickly developed lands leased from the palace department. The calm idyll of the family of chamberlain Pavel Petrovich was overshadowed by tragedy: one after another, daughter Maria and granddaughter Anna passed away. The girl drowned in the country pond.

Anna Dmitrievna made a vow in memory of her granddaughter to build a temple on the fatal site. In 1842, she appealed to the Moscow diocesan administration with a petition to build a church.

In her petition, she promised to move her country house to the required distance from the future prayer building, donate 200 thousand rubles for its construction, buy church utensils, provide housing for parish priests and allocate money for their maintenance. The clergy refused the request. Anna Dmitrievna submitted a petition to Nicholas I.

The emperor gave permission for the construction of the church, and ordered to pray in it for the creator of the holy building and her relatives. The monarch approved the architectural design of Fyodor Richter, and in April 1844, on the occasion of the Annunciation, the foundation stone for the church was laid. At the end of the year, the bulk of the construction work was completed.

The Church of the Annunciation of the Blessed Virgin Mary was ready for consecration in 1847. The 2-story prayer building of Petrovsky Park was equipped with a throne in honor of the Annunciation on the top floor and two chapels on the bottom floor.

The upper church was consecrated, clergy were appointed, but the arrival of a new church was not determined. Anna Dmitrievna's request, signed by other eminent summer residents, to establish a permanent parish was granted by the higher clergy.

Nine years after its consecration, the church building was renovated. At the end of the 19th century, the houses of the clergy were equipped, the church was surrounded by a fence, major repairs were made and the temple was re-consecrated. In 1901, the church acquired an ensemble of magnificent bells, decorated with images of biblical scenes. The building was reconstructed, expanding the area due to the construction of 2 side aisles.

In 1917, after the interior decoration of the lower floor was decorated, the temple acquired its completed appearance.

True, not for long. In the early 40s, the church was closed and the prayer building was converted into warehouses. The building underwent barbaric reconstruction; no one cared about preserving the interior decoration. The holy building existed in a deplorable state for almost half a century. Only at the end of the 20th century was the Orthodox church returned to the church community.

Description[edit]

The projects carried out in the Church of the Intercession of the Blessed Virgin Mary are truly unique. The Byzantine mosaic will be recreated in the upper church. The peculiarity of the lower temple is that its entire space is given over to the implementation of a unique architectural project, called “Icon of the Holy Land”. Architectural features

The Church of the Annunciation of the Blessed Virgin Mary in Petrovsky Park is structurally a pillar-shaped octagonal structure raised on a rectangular base tier. The main volume is framed in the upper part by figured kokoshniks and ends with a light drum. The structure is complemented by a vestibule with a bell tower installed above it.

The two-tier building is crowned with a gilded dome, similar to a hero’s helmet. The bell tower ends with a tetrahedral tent with a small golden dome at the top. The decorative porch with an arch and white figured columns is associated with the entrance to the princely chambers and confirms that the building belongs to the Russian architectural style.

Lattice, narrow, extended upward to the entire height of the second floor, arched windows add lightness to the building. The harmony of the color scheme is created by the rich coral color of the walls in combination with snow-white decorative elements: porch columns, platbands, kokoshniks, wall mosaic frames, and entrance portal.

At the corners of the building there are mosaic paintings with images of Patriarch Tikhon and St. Philaret of Moscow. The icon of the Annunciation above the entrance of the southern facade emits a radiant glow, conveying the joy of the good news to all believers. The northern facade is decorated with a mosaic icon of the Trinity.

The original style of the churchyard buildings is reminiscent of the constructivism of the thirties. Contrasting with the Russian-style prayer building, they emphasize its beauty in a special way.

The perimeter of the churchyard is surrounded by wrought iron spans connected by white stone pillars. An elegant church, neat parklands, openwork gazebos, and a church pond create a picturesque spatial composition.

Temple shrines

Scroll:

  • A special temple shrine is the revered icon of the Lord Almighty. The holy image appeared in the temple by God's providence: darkened boards were brought to the church, on which the face of Christ could barely be seen. During the restoration, under the upper drawing of the 19th century, an icon of northern painting from the mid-17th century was discovered, depicting the Savior with the Gospel in the image of the Lord of the world and judge. It is believed that the revered icon has no analogues. The icon makes an amazing impression and amazes with its depth. There is no embellishment or artificiality in the image. The appearance of the Almighty contains monastic severity and detachment. The huge beautiful eyes of Christ are not perceived on an aesthetic, superficial level, they penetrate into the depths of the subconscious, causing awe and humility.

  • In the altar of the Bogolyubsky chapel there is an icon of St. Mitrophan of Voronezh, the wonderworker, with a piece of his relics. The first Voronezh bishop was canonized for selfless service to God, good deeds, mercy and compassion. The relics of the miracle worker more than once demonstrated miracles of healing and deliverance from torment.
  • Icon of the Iveron Mother of God, dating from the 19th century, it was donated to the church by the descendants of the Russian theologian Polozov.

  • The temple relic is a grave cross from the burial place of Father Valentin, rector of the Moscow Archangel Cathedral, revered by Muscovites as a miracle worker. During his lifetime, the spiritual father consoled everyone who came to him with their troubles. Archpriest Valentin was buried at the Vagankovskoye cemetery. Pilgrims came to the grave, read prayers, and asked for help. In the 1930s, authorities destroyed the burial site. The cross was removed from the ruined grave and preserved. Now the relic is kept in the northern aisle.

Interior decoration

The original decoration of the temple, lost during the Soviet years, was famous for its luxury. The generous gifts of Anna Dmitrievna and noble neighbors allowed the interior to shine with bright, pure colors of enamel items, gold frames, and silver of church utensils. After the temple was returned to the Orthodox community, work was carried out to reconstruct the interior, completed in 2001.

This is what the Church of the Annunciation of the Blessed Virgin Mary looks like from the inside.

The updated premises, decorated without excessive pomp, are filled with light and comfort. The floors and altar are lined with granite slabs, new wooden iconostases with carved inserts are installed in the chapels, and the light walls are decorated with icons under glass in simple wooden frames.

The walls of the lower floor are decorated with paintings, the vaults with discreet ornamental designs. The dome of the upper tier contains a mosaic cross. The chandelier with candles and openwork forged patterns attracts attention, the refracted glow of which fills the temple with solemnity during festive services.
