Temple in honor of the Feast of the Entry of the Blessed Virgin Mary in Veshnyaki
- a modular type temple, built within the framework of the program of His Holiness, His Holiness Patriarch Kirill of Moscow and All Rus' for the construction of the required number of Orthodox churches for Moscow (commonly known as “Program-200”). The Temple of the Entry in Veshnyaki is the first temple in the Eastern Administrative District built under this program.
History[edit]
After the necessary approvals (carried out by the Financial and Economic Administration of the Moscow Patriarchate), the Russian Orthodox Church was allocated a plot of land. A project for a temple for 500 people was developed and approved (the author of the project is the MosProekt-3 organization), and the necessary public hearings were held on this construction in the building of the Veshnyaki district government.
Construction began after a prayer service on August 27, 2011 (see photo gallery) and, with God’s help, continues successfully. A rector of the church has been appointed, and the formation of a parish community is underway. On the territory allocated for the temple complex, weekly prayer services are held - every Sunday at 13.00.
History of the temple
The holy walls of the Church of the Assumption of the Mother of God have seen many kings, and its doors were forcibly closed to Christians only once. The founder of the church in Veshnyaki was the boyar Fyodor Ivanovich Sheremetyev, who, for the sake of saving his soul, sacrificed a lot for the construction of churches. Having built the Assumption Church, he went to a monastery, where he remained until his death.
Built in the 17th century, the Cathedral of the Assumption was the only one in Veshnyaki, but its building was not enough to accommodate all the parishioners on holidays even during three liturgies. It was decided to build another church with a capacity of 500 people. Its construction became part of Program 200 for the construction of the number of Orthodox churches required for Moscow.
Temple architecture
The Church of the Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary amazes with its grandeur. The architects envisioned two chapels and a bell tower with a spire on the third tier. The frescoes for the church were painted in the 19th century and are still preserved.
The Temple in honor of the Entry of the Blessed Virgin Mary is a typical church, the improvement of which is still underway. A central chandelier with 120 candles has already been hung inside and the frame of the first tier of the iconostasis has been installed. In total it is planned to make five tiers covered with basma.
[edit] Shrines of the temple
- The Icon of the Entry of the Most Holy Theotokos into the Temple
is located in the local (first) tier of the iconostasis on the right side of the Royal Doors, immediately behind the icon of the Savior. According to the existing pious tradition of bringing icons for temples from especially revered pilgrimage places, the temple icon was painted on the holy Mount Athos and presented as a gift to the temple. The solemn consecration was performed on June 6, 2015 by Metropolitan Mark of Ryazan and Mikhailovsky, co-served by the clergy of the Eastern Vicariate. - Reliquary
with particles of the relics of the saints: John the Baptist, the chief apostles Peter and Paul, St. John Climacus, the First Martyr Archdeacon Stephen, St. Macarius the Great, St. Ambrose of Milan, Saints Peter and Fevronia of Murom, Patriarch Tikhon and other saints. - The icon of St. Nicholas, Archbishop of Myra of Lycia with a particle of the relics
is an icon of one of the most revered and beloved saints by Orthodox people - St. Nicholas the Wonderworker, with a particle of the relics of the holy saint of God. The particle was brought from the Italian city of Bari, where the relics of the saint rest, and was presented as a gift to the temple.
Patronal holidays
In addition to the main daily services, additional services are held in the Assumption Cathedral on patronal feast days:
- August 28 - Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary;
- Resurrection of Christ (Easter);
- August 2 is the day of the prophet Elijah;
- May 22 and December 19 are the feast of St. Nicholas the Wonderworker;
- January 25 is the day of veneration of Saint Tatiana, the patroness of students.
On a note! It is believed that on these days, prayers to saints are more powerful and miraculous.
Temple during the Soviet years
During Soviet times, the Church of the Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary in Veshnyaki was closed, but its building was not destroyed. In 1940, it was simply closed to the public and remained empty until the start of the war. The German attack created the need to use the walls of the church for other purposes: engines of military vehicles were repaired here, then there was a military warehouse, and in the end everything was converted into a canteen.
Although local residents and families from neighboring villages took relics of the cathedral for safekeeping, most of the icons were forced to remain in the bell tower, where weather conditions ruined them. Already in 1947, residents were able to return the icons to their rightful place - the cathedral opened, and on January 25 the first liturgy took place.

At the end of the service, the rector of the church, Archpriest Maxim Kravchenko, greeted His Holiness and presented His Holiness with a Eucharistic set - a chalice, a paten and a star.
The Primate of the Russian Church addressed the believers with the Primate’s word:
“In the name of the Father and the Son and the Holy Spirit!
If you think about today’s Gospel text (Matthew 22:1-14), then the main words that it contains raise many questions for any insufficiently prepared person. And the words are: “Many are called, but few are chosen.”
Let us also ask some questions together with people seeking to understand the meaning of this text. If many are called into the Kingdom of Heaven, but few are chosen, what does this mean? Predestination? That God determined in advance who would be chosen? It is not said that a person chooses himself. Many are called, but few are chosen - by whom? Are there few chosen by God? It is on the basis of such a misunderstanding of the text that an error arose in the history of theological thought, namely the doctrine of predestination, according to which everything is decided in advance in heaven. A person is born, and one is predestined to the Kingdom of Heaven, and the other to destruction.
The Church rejected this teaching. In fact, if everything is predetermined, then why suffer, why strain yourself? Everything is predetermined - so let everything roll on rails! But this is not at all true! And in the nuances, in the details of today’s Gospel reading, we can see the true meaning of the Savior’s words “many are called, but few are chosen.”
What are these details? Cloth. Remember, as was just said in the parable, clothing that is not suitable for participating in a wedding celebration. In fact, if a loader, having barely finished his work, comes to the wedding feast in dirty, oily clothes, he will be asked: “Wash, change your clothes, and then come.” What does clothing mean in the parable? It symbolically represents a person’s participation in the matter of his salvation. The Lord calls every person to salvation, but the person himself needs to decide what clothes he will wear, that is, how he will live.
Clothes are our business. The Lord calls everyone, without making distinctions; He does not predetermine a person’s life and his afterlife, contrary to the well-known theological misconception. Predestination is not an irresistible force, there is no predetermined program, but there is a need to dress correctly when going to a wedding feast, that is, to live correctly, do the right things, and only then God’s predestination will lead a person to immortality in the Divine Kingdom.
Indeed, everything depends on the Lord. He is the Creator of the world. He can change the destiny of every person, He can invade our daily life. Isn’t the prayer we turn to God a request for Him to invade our lives? If we are sick, we ask: heal, that is, come into our lives with Your power, help us, make up for our limitations, our weakness, our imperfection. We pray before exams, even after preparing: Lord, help! Where I can humanly break down, forget something - support me! We pray before important events in our lives, asking the Lord for help - not so that He will do something for us, but so that at that moment in life when our weakness and imperfection can lead to a fatal mistake, the Lord will be with us.
Divine predestination interacts closely with human freedom. This is not unconditional predestination, this is not a arrow on a railroad track. If you move the arrow, the train will go only in the direction where it points it. But life is not like that. The Lord does not control the arrows; at a crossroads, we ourselves choose to move forward, to the right or to the left. We determine our lives, but the Lord always remains with us. With His gracious help, in response to prayer, He can keep us from doing wrong. He can help us choose the right path in life. He can help us enter the wedding feast if we wear the right clothes, that is, if we do the right things.
This is how human freedom and Divine providence are combined, and in the combination of these two factors, a person, his personality, his will play a huge role, for he, created in the image and likeness of God, has the sacred gift of freedom. Therefore, today's Gospel reading should help us understand: it depends on the Lord whether to let us into the feast or not to let us in, to invite or not to invite; but what clothes we should wear depends on us. Let's choose clean and bright clothes, which will open the way to the Kingdom of Heaven for us! Amen".
His Holiness Patriarch Kirill thanked the rector of the church, Archpriest Maxim Kravchenko, for his efforts.
“I would like to sincerely thank you, Father Superior, for today’s service, for the many things that have been done in this church. I am glad to see this temple in the form in which it now appears before me,” said His Holiness. “But I rejoice more that the people of God are gathering here.” God grant that there be more youth and children among this people, because the future of the Church will largely depend on how mothers and fathers bring their children to the temple of God. And not only the future of the Church, but the future of the country. Therefore, the vocation of children and youth to church life is our common and enormous responsibility. I really hope that in this well-maintained church, in this wonderful parish, work will continue to continue, aimed at ensuring that as many young people and the younger generation as possible attend divine services in the church.”
His Holiness Patriarch Kirill donated a copy of the Don Icon of the Mother of God to the newly consecrated church.
In consideration of assistance in the construction of the Church of the Entry into the Church of the Blessed Virgin Mary in Veshnyaki in Moscow, His Holiness Patriarch Kirill awarded the medal of the Order of the Holy Blessed Prince Daniel of Moscow to the prefect of the Eastern Administrative District of Moscow N.V. Aleshin, Deputy Chairman of the Moscow State Construction Supervision Committee S.N. Ignatiev and the head of the administration of the Veshnyaki district of Moscow E.D. Shcherbachev.
A number of benefactors and participants in the construction of the temple were awarded Patriarchal diplomas.
***
The Church of the Presentation of the Blessed Virgin Mary (Patriarchal Compound) was built at the numerous requests of residents of the Veshnyaki district as part of the Program for the construction of new Orthodox churches in Moscow.
The five-domed church for 500 parishioners was designed in 2010 (project - MosProekt-3 JSC, author - V.N. Sokolov). The architectural style is a classic five-domed cathedral. The area of the temple was increased due to the balconies-choirs along the walls of the temple, as well as due to the creation of a basement floor the size of the temple (in the future it will house a baptismal temple). The baptismal temple is planned to be consecrated in honor of St. Spyridon of Trimythous, revered at the parish.
Construction began in the fall of 2011. To commemorate this event, a foundation stone was installed, which was consecrated by His Holiness Patriarch Kirill on October 4, 2011. The patriarchal courtyard at the temple under construction was established in December 2011.
The temple complex was put into operation in January 2021. In December 2021, the iconostasis was installed.
