Church of the Intercession of the Blessed Virgin Mary on Lyshchikova Mountain

- Orthodox church of the Pokrovsky deanery of the Moscow city diocese. The temple is located in the Tagansky district, Central Administrative District of Moscow. The main shrine is a shrine with the relics of the priest Roman (Bear).

History[edit]

The Church of the Intercession of the Blessed Virgin Mary stands at the foot of the hill on which in ancient times stood the Intercession Lyshchikov Monastery with its settlement. “Lyshchikova Gora” - the site of one of the oldest pre-Moscow settlements on the high left bank of the Yauza - is believed to have been known since the 12th century. In the 15th-16th centuries the lands belonged to the Grand Dukes of Moscow. The first documentary mention of the Intercession Monastery was found in 1504 - John III bequeathed it to his son Vasily III, and in 1572 Ivan the Terrible also denied the monastery to his eldest son.

The monastery was abolished, apparently, during the construction of Skorodom (Earth City), when part of the hill on which it stood was razed. The main church of the monastery of the Intercession of the Most Holy Theotokos was mentioned already in 1625 as a parish wooden church, “which is reputed to be in Lyshchikov.”

New stone church with a chapel to St. John of Damascus was built in 1696 “at the request of clerk Ivan Rogozin.” In 1697, an antimension was issued (“priest Michael took it”) and the consecration of the temple took place. This stone temple became the basis of the current church.

In 1773, at the expense of Second Major Ilya Alekseevich Likharev, a chapel of the Kazan Icon of the Mother of God was built. In 1803-1805. The existing bell tower was erected, and the refectory was extended to the west. During the invasion of Napoleon and the Moscow fire of 1812, the Church of the Intercession was seriously damaged and was temporarily assigned to the Church of St. Nikolai, which is on Yamakh. Only two years later, in 1814, the main Intercession throne was consecrated again, and in 1815 and 1818 the side chapels were consecrated.

In 1830, the ancient part of the church, protruding into the alley with a quadrangle and an altar apse, was surrounded by extensions and acquired a semicircular shape. In the 1880s the current chapter appeared, composed of towers and kokoshniks.

The temple did not close after the October Revolution of 1917; it completely preserved the ancient interior decoration and the selection of ancient church bells.

In 1996, the temple celebrated its 300th anniversary and in the same year the clergy house was returned to the temple.

There is a Sunday school for children at the church. Catechetical talks are held on Saturday evenings.

From the history of the Intercession Church

The monastery was mentioned in connection with the monk Stefan, who became a monk within the walls of the shrine. It is also known that Ivan III spoke about the monastery in his will to his son; Ivan the Terrible also bequeathed the monastery to one of his heirs.

In 1479, the gardens of the Grand Dukes were built within the walls of the Intercession Monastery, which is why everyone calls the shrine “what’s in the Gardens.”

In 1612, foreigners lived on Lyshchikova Mountain, and the monastery remained without a clergyman.

Apparently, after the construction of Zemlyanoy Gorod, the shrine was abolished, because part of the hill where the monastery stood was razed.

In 1696, clerk I. Ragozin provided funds for the construction of a stone building. In all likelihood, the history of the Intercession Church in the name of the Blessed Virgin Mary begins with this event. At the shrine there is a chapel in honor of Ragozin’s namesake, John of Damascus.

In 1773, Ivan Likharev built another chapel in the temple - Our Lady of Kazan. Later, a bell tower appears near the church, and the refectory extends to the west.

The building of the Church of the Intercession is a quadrangle with a closed vault. Apses are placed in front of the building. Two-stage window sill niches on the façade are a feature of early classicism. The bell tower rises in the middle of the refectory façade. Its upper parts are made in a classic style.

In 1812, the Church of the Intercession on Lyshchikova Mountain was badly damaged. He was temporarily assigned to the St. Nicholas Church in Yamy. After 2 years, the altar was consecrated anew, the chapels a little later.

In 1838, extensions were made to the temple. They were equal in width to the refectory, so the building received a finished look. Pilaster porticos were made on the sides of the building, with entrances to the church. Stucco molding decorates the octagon of the building. Later, a dome of kokoshniks and towers will appear, which we can still see today.

The parish of the Church of the Intercession of the Most Holy Theotokos on Lyshchikova Hill in Moscow was formed on the site of the Intercession Monastery destroyed during the Time of Troubles in 1611. The first documentary mention of the monastery was found in 1486. The monastery was a monastery, it was maintained at the personal expense of the Grand Dukes, and then the Tsars of Moscow. Since 1625, the parish wooden Church of the Intercession of the Blessed Virgin Mary has been mentioned at this place. In 1696, through the efforts of parishioners and at the request of clerk Ivan Rogozin, a stone Church of the Intercession with a chapel of St. John of Damascus was built. In 1773, at the expense of Second Major I.A. Likharev, a chapel was built in honor of the Kazan Icon of the Mother of God. In 1838, the ancient part of the temple with a quadrangle and the apse of the main altar acquired a semicircular shape thanks to symmetrical side extensions. In 1878, the head merchant A.F. Bernikov carried out a major restoration of the temple, and new iconostases were built in the chapels. The main altar of the temple is consecrated in honor of the Intercession of the Most Holy Theotokos, the side chapels are dedicated to the Kazan Icon of the Mother of God and St. John of Damascus. The side altar was consecrated as part of St. Simeon the Stylite. The temple did not close after the October Revolution in 1917. In 1922, the atheistic authorities confiscated all the precious icon frames, silver lamps, altar crosses and liturgical vessels; however, the temple retained its ancient interior decoration and a selection of ancient bells. In 1996, the temple celebrated its 300th anniversary and in the same year the clergy house and part of the territory that previously belonged to the church were returned to the parish. The church operates a Sunday school and an Orthodox youth club. The Pokrovsky parish is participating in the restoration of the Church of St. Nicholas of Myra, destroyed during the years of hard times, in the village of Fedorovskoye, Stupinsky district, Moscow region - the Patriarchal Compound. With the blessing of Patriarch ALEXIY II, the relics of the presbyter and confessor Roman Medved (1874-1937) have rested in the church since 1999. The Church of the Intercession of the Most Holy Theotokos on Lyshchikova Mountain is the only place in our Mother See of Capital where services have been held without interruption for more than 500 years.

Story

The Church of the Intercession of the Blessed Virgin Mary on Lyshchikova Mountain was built in 1696 on the site of the abolished Lyshchikov Intercession Monastery, mentions of which date back to the 16th century. The temple is an octagon on a quadrangle with an octagonal dome topped with a dome on a light drum.

In 1625, archival documents mention the Intercession parish wooden church. By the end of the 17th century the church had fallen into disrepair. During a fire in 1688, the roofs were burned. The question arose about repairing or building a new temple. The parishioners and priest Mikhail Kalinnik decided to build a stone church. The petition was written by clerk Ivan Ragozin.

The foundation of the church dates back to 1695. The temple was erected in 1696 and consecrated in 1697. It is known that “Priest Mikhail Kalinnik took the antimension on October 12, 1697,” at which time the chapel of St. John of Damascus was consecrated.

At the same time, a square, two-tier bell tower with an entrance in the western wall was approved. Under the bell tower there is a porch.

In 1773, Second Major Ilya Alekseevich Likharev built a chapel dedicated to the Kazan Icon of the Mother of God in the refectory.

The church survived two big fires: in 1737 and 1748. On the church, “the crosses were crooked and the roofs were burned on the altars and meals.” In 1795, renovations began, and on May 16, 1797, the temple was re-consecrated.

Before the war of 1812, under the rector Grigory Petrov and the elder Kuzma Ushakov, with the financial help of the Sergeev merchants, the refectory was expanded to the north, forming a new chapel. Due to the invasion of Napoleon's army, the work was not completed. The Church of the Intercession was plundered and desecrated by enemy soldiers. In addition, the rector of the temple was transferred to another place. In such conditions it was impossible to perform divine services, so the parishioners of the Church of the Intercession on June 13, 1813 were assigned to the Church of St. Nicholas the Wonderworker in Yamy. The Intercession Church was restored in 1814, and on May 31 it was consecrated. On September 26, 1815, the chapel was consecrated in the name of the Kazan Icon of the Mother of God. The chapel of St. John of Damascus was consecrated on July 15, 1818.

The decision to build an extension of an unusual shape, which “encompassed” the perimeter of the ancient church building in 1838, was caused not only by the need for new interior spaces, but also by the “architectural fashion” of the time. The rounded eastern part of the extension, as it were, generalizes the fractional part of the apse, protruding beyond the line of the lane. This corresponds to the monumental tendencies of the late Empire style, which was especially concerned about the integrity of the appearance of the building from the street side. The extension of the same width as the refectory made it possible to create uniform planes of the side facades of the building, with arched niches around the windows.

The volume protruding into the alley is decorated with a large rectangular rustication. However, pilaster porticoes with pediments are placed not in the center of the facades, but on the sides of the quadrangle, and the entrances to the church are located in them.

The ancient octagon is also decorated in the same style: like the southern façade, it is decorated with stucco details, with the corner blades turned into a kind of pilasters. All work was carried out under the care of the headman - merchant Nikolai Dmitrievich Stuzhin.

Headman Alexander Fedorovich Bernikov contributed to the internal decoration of the temple, as well as the correction of the dome on the Intercession Church. The parish house was built with his money.

In the 1880s, the current chapter appeared, composed of towers and kokoshniks.

During the Soviet period, the temple was not closed, divine services did not stop there, and the ancient interior decoration and selection of church bells were preserved.
