In connection with the reconstruction of this place, the head of the Leninsky municipal district V.Yu. Golubev, it was decided to build a chapel in honor of the holy noble prince Alexander Nevsky and place in it a memorial plaque with the names of heroic soldiers who laid down their lives for their Motherland.

On May 6, 2008, the chapel was consecrated by Metropolitan of Krutitsky and Kolomna Juvenaly (Poyarkov). Over time, the city grew in size and the need arose to build a temple chapel on the site. The community of St. George's Church, to which the chapel was assigned, completed all the necessary approvals, held public hearings, and city residents spoke in favor of the construction of the temple.

On March 9, 2014, the dean of the churches of the Vidnovsky district, Archpriest Mikhail Egorov, in concelebration with the clergy of the deanery, performed the rite of founding a new church in honor of the holy noble prince Alexander Nevsky. On May 18, 2014, the domed crosses and bells were consecrated, and on September 12 of the same year, the first Divine Liturgy took place in the church.

Several workshops simultaneously worked on the design of the interior decoration of the temple: the paintings were made by Vidnovtsy craftsmen from the art workshop “LIK”, the iconostasis was made by the creative architectural workshop “Dabor”, and the icons belonged to the brushes of icon painters’ workshops.

On April 15, 2015, Metropolitan Yuvenaly (Poyarkov) of Krutitsky and Kolomna performed the rite of great consecration of the temple in honor of the Holy Blessed Prince Alexander Nevsky, the Divine Liturgy in the newly consecrated temple.

In 2011, construction began on a new cathedral in honor of the great commander and prince Alexander Nevsky and construction was completed in 2015. The cathedral is currently open to visitors and the schedule of services in the church at MGIMO is indicated at the entrance.

History of the building

The Russian Prince of Novgorod Alexander saw his purpose in preserving Russian culture and spreading the Orthodox faith in Rus'. The prince became famous for protecting the Russian people from German knights on Lake Peipus and for the battle with the Swedes on the Neva, for which he received the name Nevsky.

During the burial of the prince, a miracle happened when they wanted to give him a letter, they tried to unclench his hands, but he himself unclenched his fist and took the scroll. Alexander Nevsky was canonized and elevated to the number of saints in the mid-16th century. Saint's Day December 6th.

The purpose of constructing the new Alexander Nevsky Cathedral at MGIMO had historical roots:

  • Alexander Nevsky is the most famous hero of Russian history and the patron of warriors and diplomats. His unconventionality in building relations with Europe and Asia is still of interest today.
  • At the construction site there used to be a wooden church of St. Nicholas, and a stone church appeared at the beginning of the 20th century. However, the events of the 1917 revolution led the temple to destruction and oblivion. Later, during the Olympics-80, the remains of the church were finally demolished and a park was laid out. The construction of the cathedral was a triumph of historical justice.

Story

Prince Alexander of Novgorod was known among the people as a defender of the cultural heritage of the Russian land and Orthodoxy. They began to call it Nevsky after the battle on the Neva with Swedish troops. The monarch was a talented and wise man. Historians still study with great interest the diplomatic relations of Rus' with Europe and Asia during his reign.

Interesting! When Alexander Nevsky was being prepared for burial, a miracle happened. They were going to put a letter into the prince's hand and tried to unclench his fingers to do this. Imagine the surprise of those standing nearby when the prince himself extended his palm and took the scroll. The prince was canonized in the mid-sixteenth century.

They decided to build a temple in honor of Alexander Nevsky at MGIMO for two reasons:

  • the prince went down in the history of the Russian people as a prominent political figure. The saint is the patron of the military and diplomats;
  • The place where it was planned to build the temple was previously occupied by the parish of St. Nicholas. Under Soviet rule, it was destroyed and a park was laid out on this site.

People first started talking about a temple at an educational institution in 1999. Patriarch Alexy gave his blessing for the construction in 2005. But the paperwork with documents dragged on for several years. Therefore, construction of the temple began in 2011. The “200 churches in Moscow” program, launched in 2010, contributed to this issue. All construction work was completed after four years.

Cathedral style

In Russia, more than 40 buildings are dedicated to the name of the great commander Alexander Nevsky. For example, the church in Arkhangelsk is entirely made of logs. Cathedrals are also located in Tallinn and Sofia, Bulgaria. The majestic temple in Sofia is decorated with gilded domes.

The “200 Temples” project in the capital of Russia made it possible to create a building in the style of a new direction, and was erected for the 70th anniversary of the educational institution according to the design of A.A. Anisimov in the style of Pskov architecture. Archpriest Igor Fomin supported the idea of building a cathedral at the educational institution.

The cathedral is surrounded on three sides by a gallery, to the north-west there is a belfry, and to the south-east there is a clergy house. The architectural composition consists of the Nevsky Cathedral, the baptismal church, the house of parables and utility rooms.

The architectural style is created by multi-tiered coverings, white walls and a helmet-shaped dome with a golden cross. A distinctive feature of the structure is the main dome, decorated with nine thousand ceramic ploughshares reminiscent of a prince’s helmet. The facade and windows are decorated with carvings and mosaics. Entrance doors are wooden, the floor in the room is made of natural stone. The walls inside are covered with lime plaster with paintings and mosaics.

There is a plunge pool in the basement. The parable house has a refectory, a kitchen, offices, administrative and utility rooms, and a priest’s room.
