Temple of Blessed Xenia of Petersburg
- Orthodox church in Voronezh. Construction of the temple began in 2000.
History[edit]
In 1995, not far from the chapel (now a temple) in the name of the holy noble prince Alexander Nevsky, a temple was founded in the name of Blessed Xenia of St. Petersburg, Christ the Holy Fool. Since 2000, active construction of the temple began, which continues. Currently, the small church of the Blessed Prince Alexander Nevsky and the lower church of St. Nicholas the Wonderworker are in operation. Three chapels will be created in the upper church: the main chapel in the name of Blessed Xenia of St. Petersburg, the right chapel in honor of the Pochaev Icon of the Mother of God, the left chapel in honor of the Vladimir Icon of the Mother of God.
The traditional religious procession from Voronezh to Zadonsk to St. Tikhon of Zadonsk visits the Church of St. Blessed Xenia of St. Petersburg, where a prayer service is performed and a meal is offered to pilgrims.
The temple is being built in the style of the ancient Russian tradition of temple architecture according to the design of the architect A. B. Logvinov. The shape of the temple’s base is “ship”. The temple will have nine domes, without a bell tower. The height of the temple is about 30 m. The belfry will be built in two small domes. Land plot - 1 hectare.
Complex buildings: architecture and interior
All religious buildings erected on the territory of the complex over the course of 25 years are designed in the same architectural style. The temples, reminiscent of the feat of Soviet soldiers, are reminiscent of the ancient temples of the Vladimir-Suzdal principality.
Temple of Xenia of Petersburg
The main temple of the complex, like most Orthodox religious buildings, is built in the shape of a “ship”, in which all the component parts are located sequentially one after another in a straight line. The tall white-stone church-monument belongs to the type of cross-domed building with raised girth arches. Adjacent to the crosshairs are two rows of cylindrical vaults, between which semicircular ceilings (“sails”) are formed. This method of covering allows you to visually stretch the building upward, giving it the shape of a pillar or candle.
This vertical movement is emphasized by nine tall drums on which helmet-shaped domes are mounted. The central and middle drums are cut through by high and narrow window portals. Until December 2021, the two towers of the second row housed belfries.
Interior of the Church of Xenia of Petersburg
The facades of the building have a clear three-part division, each part of which ends in a semicircular pediment. A small semicircular apse adjoins the central wide part of the eastern wall. The middle porches of the remaining facades are adjoined by high vestibules. The walls of the temple, covered with white plaster, are decorated with laconic architectural decorations. These include:
- belt of semi-columns on the eastern facade;
- curly shoulder blades;
- belts of stone carvings at the base of the drums.
The Voronezh Church in the name of Blessed Xenia of St. Petersburg has a high basement in which the lower church of St. Nicholas the Wonderworker is located. On the top floor, to which a high porch leads, three chapels are consecrated:
- in the name of Xenia of Petersburg (main);
- in honor of the icon of the Mother of God of Vladimir;
- in honor of the Pochaev image of the Mother of God.
The iconostases of all chapels are made in white and decorated with carved details, some of which are covered with gilding. There are icons on the snow-white walls.
Interesting! The main shrine of the temple is a large icon of the blessed St. Petersburg saint.
Alexander Nevsky Church
The small temple, dedicated to the holy defender of Rus', is a square-shaped building of a cross-dome type. It is crowned by a wide light drum topped with a high helmet-shaped dome. The central parts of the facades end in keel-shaped zakomaras.
Church of Alexander Nevsky in Voronezh
During the daytime, light enters the temple through arched windows located in the drum and walls. A low semicircular apse adjoins the eastern façade.
Chapel of John of Kronstadt
A small temple identical in shape and design to the main building of the complex. It is crowned by one helmet-shaped dome mounted on a high light drum. Above the entrance to the chapel there is an icon of the saint in whose name it was consecrated. The facades of the building are decorated with bas-reliefs depicting an equal-armed cross.
In the temple, located to the right of the entrance to the cathedral complex, its main relic is located - part of the tombstone of St. Blessed Xenia.
Bell tower
The bell tower building was founded in 2013. It is a high, square structure at the base, consisting of two quadrangles and crowned by a round rotunda with a helmet-shaped dome, which ends with a high spire.
Interesting! The belfry has 11 bells, which can be driven either manually or using an electronic bell ringer system capable of reproducing 80 canonical bell melodies.
Currently, finishing work is underway in the building.

Temple life today
The Church of Xenia of St. Petersburg in Voronezh is always filled with parishioners. People come here not only for services, but also to pray in silence for their loved ones or light candles for the repose of loved ones. Wedding and baptism ceremonies are also held here.
Divine services are held daily, with the exception of Mondays. Like many churches in Voronezh, the temple has an official website, on the pages of which there is a lot of interesting information about the history of the religious building and its architecture. In particular, you can find a schedule of services on the resource.
Sunday parochial school at the temple
The church runs a Sunday school for children, “Rodnik,” where they study the basics of Orthodox culture. Many children participate in the church choir, where they learn to perform church music.
Every year many pilgrims gather in the temple, planning to participate in the traditional Mitrofan-Tikhon procession. Priests in festive vestments with banners and ordinary parishioners walk, offering prayers, to Zadonsk. The distance is 120 km and the journey takes 5 days. On the day the church procession begins, a prayer service is held and a meal is organized.
Grove of the Heart next to the Temple of Xenia of St. Petersburg
There is a park around the temple, the basis of which was the historically famous Grove of the Heart. There are benches in the shade of trees where you can relax. There is also a children's playground with attractions, which allows families with children to spend time here.

Interesting! The cathedral complex of St. Xenia is the starting point of the procession to Zadonsk to the relics of St. Tikhon of Zadonsk. Before the long 120 km road, a divine service is performed in front of the temple and a meal is held. Every year 1.5 thousand people participate in this event.
Social activities
The clergy of the church carry out active social activities, which include:
- spiritual and material assistance to low-income families;
- edging of orphanages, medical institutions;
- visiting and helping older people.
Educational activities
At the cathedral complex there is a library and a Sunday school, classes in which are aimed not only at forming and deepening knowledge about the foundations of the Christian faith and the history of Orthodoxy, but also at developing the creative abilities of the younger generation.
Conversations are held with adult parishioners weekly on Sundays, the topic of which is biblical stories. In addition, public conversations are held before the sacraments of baptism and wedding.
Chapel of John of Kronstadt
From 2011 to 2013, in the southern part of the temple complex, a chapel dedicated to Righteous John of Kronstadt was built by parishioners. It was here that part of the tombstone from the grave of Saint Xenia was placed, which was handed over to the clergy and parishioners.
On the feast of the Epiphany, believers can collect Epiphany water in the chapel.
Today the life of the parish is filled with work. They try to help everyone here. It is fair to say that the Voronezh Church of St. Xenia has become one of the symbols of the city, its decoration and spiritual center.
Location
The temple is located in the northern microdistrict of Voronezh, very close to the “Heart” grove, which began to be called that after the Great Patriotic War. On wartime topographic maps, its outline resembled a heart. In this grove on the outskirts of the city there was a defense line, fierce battles took place, and many Soviet soldiers died.
Today this grove is a green, well-kept park; the whole family comes here to relax. Near the park, near the arch on the western side of the temple complex, there is a dazzling white sculpture, a monument to the holy blessed Xenia of Petersburg, the holy fool for Christ's sake. The opening of the monument took place on June 6, 2012. The sculpture was illuminated by Metropolitan Sergius of Voronezh and Borisoglebsk. The author of the monument is a local native, sculptor A.V. Terekhin.
