in the village of Elita it was carried out for 5 years - from 2005 and 2010.
Church of Cyril and Methodius in Podolsk today
The Church of Cyril and Methodius in Podolsk is of great importance for the city. God's house creates a solid foundation for the piety of Russian people, their spirituality and love for God, and faith in the bright future of Russia. The patron saints of the temple are the Slovenian brothers Cyril and Methodius, especially revered in Rus' for the creation of Slavic writing: the solemn celebration of their memory was established by the Russian Orthodox Church more than 150 years ago in 1863.
Thanks to the Slovenian primary teachers, the Slavic peoples had the opportunity to study the Holy Scriptures and perform divine services in their native language. With a feeling of immeasurable unfading gratitude and love, Orthodox Christians celebrate the Day of Remembrance of Saints Cyril and Methodius on May 24.
At Moscow State University there is already a house church - the martyr Tatiana on Mokhovaya. Why another one?
“What didn’t please the temple on Mokhovaya?
He is already a kind of symbol. Yes, we can say that it is small, it can accommodate a few people, but now it will be for real - but this is a game of scale, an attempt to measure faith by the number of followers,” says Yulia, a first-year student at the Faculty of History of Moscow State University. According to her, she does not have a “sharply negative” attitude towards the construction of a new temple, but it causes bewilderment. A graduate of the Faculty of Journalism, Polina Chastova, also believes that one church at Moscow State University is enough: “We were told in classes that Gogol’s funeral service was held in this church, and they also said goodbye to many famous professors of the university. This is a place with an amazing history, a place of prayer, and I wouldn’t want the new temple to distract attention from the old one.” Polina notes that the historical temple is located well: “Getting to the Church of St. Tatiana is equally convenient from anywhere in Moscow, and from Vorobyovy Gory it’s a 15-minute metro ride. I think if you already have it, then nothing else is needed.”
Unlike previous respondents, fourth-year student of the Faculty of Mechanics and Mathematics Vladimir Nikishov is happy about the construction of a new temple: “The existing temple of the martyr Tatiana is located in the center of the city, where only four faculties are located. At the same time, about seven thousand people live in one Main building, and there are also students living in the Student House on Lomonosovsky Prospekt (DSL). Among all these people there are many Orthodox Christians. Next to the Moscow State University there is the Church of the Life-Giving Trinity on Sparrow Hills, and, as far as I know, this temple cooperates with informal student associations and with university teachers. However, despite its role, it is quite modest in size and is intended not so much for university people as for local residents.”
Vladimir is glad that students and employees of Moscow State University will have “their own” temple within walking distance from the university: “For me this is a personal question, and not just an abstract one, since I myself live in the State University. I am an Orthodox Christian and will gladly come to the new church if it is built.”
“The world’s largest educational centers have student churches on their campuses, which in no way violates their secular status and does not contradict the principles underlying the scientific activities of these educational institutions,” noted Archpriest, rector of the Church of Equal-to-the-Apostles Cyril and Methodius at Moscow State University, in an interview with TD John Lapidus four years ago. — There has almost always been a church at Moscow State University, with the exception of the Soviet period. If in 1953 most of the faculties moved to the Leninsky (now Vorobyovy - “TD”) Mountains, then for more than half a century there should have been a student temple there. Obviously, this was impossible under the conditions of state atheism and persecution of the Church. Now, thank God, the situation has changed.”
The tradition of building temples on different university campuses also exists in the West. “There are eleven Christian churches in Oxford, and eight in Cambridge,” recalls Archpriest Vladimir Vigilyansky, rector of the Church of the Martyr Tatiana at Moscow State University. “The American Harvard (since 1816) and Stanford (since 1897) also have functioning churches.”
Local residents also need a new church, says Anna Danilova, a senior lecturer at the Faculty of Philology of Moscow State University, a resident of the Vernadsky Prospekt district, and editor-in-chief of the Orthodoxy and Peace portal. All the surrounding churches are either far away or overcrowded, she writes.
By the way, unlike Tatyaninsky, the new temple will not be called “house”, since a separate building will be built for it. And not even on the territory of Moscow State University (more on that below).

Architecture, exterior decoration
Cyril and Methodius Church organically combines construction technologies of the 21st century. and centuries-old experience of church architecture in Rus'. This small building impresses with its grandeur and unique beauty. Constructed from wooden beams, it stands on a high concrete foundation. The temple vaults are crowned with a gilded dome, and the church ensemble is completed by a tall belfry with 8 bells.
In the underground floor there is a baptismal room, a church and bookstore, and service rooms. The large side windows of the temple, almost the entire wall high, make its interior bright and cozy. Nearby there is a 2-story Sunday School building, also built of wooden beams, and a small utility building. The territory of the temple is fenced, landscaped, and has a beautiful entrance from the new Slavyansky Boulevard.
History of construction
The Cyril and Methodius Church in Podolsk was built at the request of numerous citizens and in record time - in just 1 year. Laid out on the last day of July 2011, it opened its doors to parishioners after the Great Consecration by Bishop Metropolitan Yuvenaly in October 2012.
The construction was carried out at the expense of residents and several enterprises, and was actively supported by the administration and the head of the city. It was implemented under a program that provides for the construction of Christian places of worship in densely populated residential areas.
Does the land plot on which the temple is being built belong to Moscow State University?
“According to Moscow government decree No. 652-PP dated October 7, 2015, the temple in honor of Saints Cyril and Methodius will be built on a site located next to the new territories of Moscow State University,” explains Archpriest John Lapidus. “In these territories, according to the master plan for the development of the city, new university buildings will be located - faculties, dormitories, research institutes.”
“After Easter 2015, 25 deans, five directors of the Moscow State University Research Institute, 11 academicians, professors, teachers, students (in total - representatives of 33 faculties) approached His Holiness Patriarch Kirill and Rector V. A. Sadovnichy with a request to build church near the main buildings, the search for a suitable site began,” continues Father John. — It is interesting that among those who signed the appeal there were Muslims, Jews and Catholics. After a long search and approvals, the city allocated a site in the area of Vernadsky Avenue.”
The site itself is the property of the city of Moscow, transferred for free use to the Church, Father John draws attention. The territory is a wasteland, so not a single tree will be cut down during construction, but on the contrary, the space around the temple will be landscaped.

Interior decoration
The Cyril and Methodius Church looks very bright and cozy inside. Light penetrates through the high windows on the side walls, and the comfort is created by wooden structures that radiate a special energy.
Small in size, it is quite spacious and roomy. The solemnity is emphasized by the iconostasis and traditional church equipment, church items.
Shrines and relics of the temple
The temple of the creators of Slavic writing Cyril and Methodius in Podolsk has a unique icon “Podolsk New Martyrs”, which depicts 10 ministers of the churches of the Podolsk district in a holy halo, who suffered martyrdom during the period of persecution of the Soviet authorities against the church in the 30-40s of the last century.
Here are their names:
- Minervin Alexander;
- Pospelov Nikolay;
- Crow Peter;
- Agafonnikov Nikolay;
- Agafonnikov Alexander;
- Felitsyn Sergiy;
- Ulyanov Timofey;
- Krymkin Vasily;
- Troitsky Mikhail;
- Lyubimov Ioann.
All of them were accused on far-fetched pretexts of anti-Soviet, rebel or counter-terrorism activities, were shot or died in forced labor camps. The Church sacredly preserves the memory of them and passes it on to younger generations.
On the Day of the New Martyrs of Podolsk, thematic lessons that have already become traditional are held for students of the church’s Sunday school. The relics of saints who have passed away retain their holiness. They are the key to the participation of saints in the prayers of believers.
In the Cyril and Methodius Church rest the incorruptible particles (relics) of 40 saints, among whom there are names widely known throughout the Orthodox world:
- Holy Prophet and Baptist of the Lord John the Baptist.
- Great Martyr George the Victorious.
- Blessed Matrona of Moscow.
- Saint Luke of Crimea.
- Venerable Cyril and Mary of Radonezh.
- Martyrs Vera, Nadezhda, Love and Sophia.
Worshiping the remains of saints, parishioners of the temple ask them in their prayers for help.
Clergy, mentors
The following currently serve in the Cyril and Methodius Church:
- The rector, Hieromonk Sergius Alexandrov (Yuri Yuryevich) was born in 1987, has secular and spiritual education, graduated from the theological seminary and the OCAiD named after Saints Cyril and Methodius. He has been carrying out his mission in this church since 2021. Name day is October 8.
- Cleric and clergyman Andrei Sokolov was born in 1985, has secular and spiritual education, and graduated from Kolomna Theological Seminary. Name day - October 15th.
- Cleric and clergyman Alexy Bashkatov, born in 1985. Has higher secular (MGSU - MISS) and religious education (Master's Degree at MDA). Name day - March 30th.
- Cleric Deacon Sergiy Knyazkin, born in 1992, has a higher secular education, and also graduated from the Kolomna Theological Seminary. Name day - October 8th.
Parishioners remember with gratitude their spiritual fathers and mentors who served in the church previously. Among them are abbots Kirill Ganaba and Dionisy Koskin, clergy Savvoteev, Usynin, Slozhenikin.
When will the temple be built?
“Relatively recently, in the fall of 2021, regular services began in a temporary temple. The young community of the new parish is now being formed; we are at the very beginning of the journey,” says Father John Lapidus. — Students and teachers of Moscow State University, residents of nearby houses from the Ramenki, Lomonosovsky and Vernadsky Prospekt districts come to us. We must not forget that the speed of construction of any temple depends on both intense prayer and material capabilities. As for plans, in 2025 the 270th anniversary of the founding of Moscow State University will be celebrated. It would be symbolic to consecrate a new temple this year. However, when making forecasts for the future, it is necessary to remember the words of the Apostle James: “If the Lord wills and we live, we will do this or that” (James 4:15).”
So far, construction has not begun, and there is no water or light on the territory of the future temple. The congregation uses an electric generator for services in the temporary church.
“You turn from Vernadsky Avenue onto some number Projected Proezd and you find yourself in... Labytnangi. Frankly, it was only there that I saw this kind of six-wheeled vehicle,” Deacon Sergius Baranov from the Church of the Martyr Tatiana at Moscow State University shares his impressions. — I thought to myself: how can the temple of the first university in the capital and country be without electricity and heating? It turns out that it still can. But, despite the lack of normal heating, the temple is cozy and warm.”
Parish and choir of the temple
The parish of the Cyril and Methodius Church arose immediately after residents of the Silikatnaya microdistrict learned that their request to build a church was heard and supported by the city administration. Active parishioners appeared who wanted to help prepare the territory and collect donations for the construction and improvement of the temple. They organized cleanup days to help builders improve the territory and plant its landscaping. Common work for a good cause united people.
The opening of the temple a year after the consecration of the foundation stone inspired the parishioners even more. Thanks to their active work among the residents of the surrounding houses, the Sunday School was filled with young students, and adults became interested in theological courses.
The parish choir is attended by parishioners, some of whom do not even have a musical education. Children in Sunday school also learn choral singing during Church hymn lessons and take part in the parish choir during holiday services.
History[edit]
During the construction of the Imperial Nikolaev Saratov University, a chapel was built in the IV building in the name of St. Nicholas the Wonderworker, the Heavenly Patron of Emperor Nicholas II, by whose decree the Saratov University was created, which bore his name.
Currently, the rector's office of the Saratov State Medical University is located in the premises of the former chapel, abolished in 1918 after the Bolshevik government decree on the separation of church from state and school from church.
In the early 2000s, a number of SSU employees created an initiative group whose goal was to restore the house church at the oldest university in Saratov. In 2004, the initiative received the support of the rector of SSU, Professor L. Yu. Kossovich, and the Bishop of Saratov and Volsky Longin blessed the creation of the community. The temple, for which one of the premises of the VI building of SSU, previously occupied by a weapons store, was allocated, it was decided to dedicate to the builders and benefactors of the university - the Holy Passion-Bearer Tsar Nicholas and his family.
On July 17, 2004, on the day of the patronal feast, a prayer service was held in the premises of the future church for the beginning of a good deed, and on August 31, 2004, the secretary of the Saratov diocesan administration, Archpriest Vasily Antipov, co-served by priest Kirill Krasnoshchekov, performed the rite of placing the antimins.
On September 1, 2004, on the first day of the new academic year, Bishop Longin of Saratov and Volsk celebrated the first Divine Liturgy in the home church at SSU. A few years later, it became clear that the adapted premises in the VI building of SSU could not accommodate everyone, and a decision was made to build a full-fledged temple with a spiritual and educational center.
On December 19, 2009, Bishop Longin of Saratov and Volsk performed the ceremony of founding the temple.
On December 22, 2011, Bishop Tarasy of Balashov and Rtishchev consecrated the crosses on the domes of the temple under construction.
On May 31, 2013, priest Kirill Krasnoshchekov, with the blessing of Metropolitan Longin of Saratov and Volsk, performed the rite of placing an antimension in the church under construction, temporarily occupying the premises of the spiritual and educational center for worship.
In 2014, finishing work was completed outside and inside the temple, an iconostasis was installed and icons were painted for it, and work was carried out to improve the area adjacent to the temple.
On October 25, 2014, His Holiness Patriarch Kirill of Moscow and All Rus', during an official visit to the Saratov Metropolis, performed a minor consecration of the temple.
On April 16, 2015, Metropolitan Longin of Saratov and Volsk performed the rite of consecration of the bells.
Social work, everyday life
The Cyril and Methodius Church in Podolsk, together with parishioners, is engaged in social work. A volunteer movement arose in the parish. Volunteers provide assistance to disabled and elderly residents of the neighborhood, organize the collection of funds and things to transfer them to maternity hospitals for abandoned children, as well as to bedridden patients in the burn department of the city hospital.
The “Gift to a Younger Friend” charity event, held before the New Year holidays, found a response in the hearts of many parishioners. Volunteer work does not go unnoticed. The most active participants in charity events receive letters of gratitude from Metropolitan Juvenaly.
Sunday School
The Sunday school began its work in September 2013 in a new 2-story building, built at the same time as the temple. Its goal is to involve children, youth, adult parishioners and city residents in active church life. The school's classrooms are equipped with modern technical equipment, there is an extensive electronic library (open on Saturdays from 12-00 to 15-00).
Children from 8 to 12 years old are accepted to study in school classes. Students take an active part in parish life: boys serve as novices in the altar, girls assist church employees. On Sundays, a festive tea party is held for children.

You need to be close and speak the same language with people
This Saturday, the first prayer service was held at the construction site of the Church of Equal-to-the-Apostles Cyril and Methodius at Moscow State University. What will the new church on Vernadsky Avenue be like? How should its interaction with the university be organized? The rector of the church, Archpriest John Lapidus, answers TD’s questions.
Archpriest John Lapidus was born in 1973 in Riga. He graduated from the Moscow Theological Seminary in 1995, the Moscow Theological Academy in 1999, and graduate school at the Department for External Church Relations of the Moscow Patriarchate in 2001. Candidate of Theology. In 1999 he was ordained to the rank of deacon, in 2000 to the rank of priest. He served in the Church of the Martyr Tatiana at Moscow State University named after M.V. Lomonosov (2000-2004), the Church of St. Sergius of Radonezh in Johannesburg (South Africa, 2004-2009), the Church of the Resurrection of Christ in Zurich (Switzerland, 2009-2012). Since 2012 - again a cleric of the Church of the Martyr Tatiana, in 2021 appointed rector of the Church of Equal-to-the-Apostles Cyril and Methodius at Moscow State University. Teacher at the Moscow Theological Academy, postgraduate candidate at the Faculty of History of Moscow State University. Married, father of five children.
- Father John, it is known that the appearance of the decree of His Holiness the Patriarch on the establishment of another Patriarchal metochion at Moscow State University was preceded by a long history. Please remind me of the main points.
- The story is really long. Back in 2000, a group of university employees turned to the leadership of Moscow State University with a request to create a university temple on Sparrow Hills. It is interesting that from the very beginning there was talk of a temple in honor of Saints Equal-to-the-Apostles Cyril and Methodius. The next approach was made in 2010, when several hundred MSU employees asked the university management to consider the possibility of building a temple at the main buildings of MSU. The letter was signed by the deans of eleven faculties, directors of Moscow State University research institutes, academicians, professors, and students. In March 2011, His Holiness the Patriarch supported the initiative of students and teachers, turning to the rector of the university, Viktor Antonovich Sadovnichy, and expressing the hope that a temple of the holy enlighteners of the Slavs would appear on the territory of the university complex. During the meeting between His Holiness the Patriarch and the rector of Moscow State University on Tatiana’s Day, January 25, 2013, a fundamental decision was made that there should be a new church at the university. A complex process of various approvals began in many instances, among which one of the most important was the question of the location of the future temple. After much research and negotiations, we decided to settle on a site on Vernadsky Avenue, which was allocated by the city and which is adjacent to the new territories of Moscow State University.
“When the idea of building a church at Moscow State University was discussed several years ago, opinions were voiced that its appearance would violate the secular status of the university, and Orthodoxy would be imposed on students in one form or another. How would you respond to such concerns?
- Firstly, the initiative to build the temple comes from the teaching corporation and the student body. This is a decision that comes from the university, and is not imposed from outside or from above. Last year, an appeal to Viktor Antonovich and His Holiness the Patriarch on the construction of a temple in honor of Cyril and Methodius was signed by 25 deans, 5 directors of the Moscow State University Research Institute, 11 academicians, professors, teachers, students - representatives of 33 faculties. It is interesting that among those who signed the appeal there are Muslims, Jews and Catholics. These data speak for themselves.
Secondly, for people for whom “secularism” is an absolute value, it makes sense to be consistent and pay attention to the situation in foreign universities, since foreign experience for them, as a rule, also belongs to value categories. The world's largest educational centers - Harvard, Princeton, Yale, Oxford, Cambridge and many others - have student churches on their campuses, which does not violate their secular status and does not contradict the principles underlying the scientific activities of these educational institutions.
Thirdly, you need to keep in mind that Moscow State University almost always, with the exception of the Soviet period, had a church. Already two years after its founding, in 1757, Ivan Melissino (director of the university in 1757-1763 - “TD”) appealed to the Synod with a request to transfer the nearby Paraskeva Pyatnitsa Church and the Church of the Resurrection to the university. In 1791, the Church of the Holy Martyr Tatiana was consecrated, which is now located in the historical building of the university on Mokhovaya. From the 259 years that have passed since then, we subtract 77 years during which the temple was closed (from 1918 to 1995). We get 182 years of peaceful cooperation and calm coexistence, of which the last 20 years of recent history especially convincingly prove that the fears mentioned in the question are unfounded.
If in 1953 most of the faculties moved to the Lenin Hills, then for more than half a century there should have been a student temple there. Obviously, this was impossible under the conditions of state atheism and persecution of the Church. Now, thank God, the situation has changed, and we are returning to the traditional - both in domestic history and in foreign practice - the paradigm of the presence of a temple at the University within walking distance for students and teachers.
- When is it planned to begin and complete the construction of the temple? Will a temporary church be opened at the construction site?
- On December 17, the first service took place on the site of the future church - a prayer service to Saints Equal-to-the-Apostles Cyril and Methodius with the consecration of the worship cross. Praying at the service were the manager of the Western Vicariate of Moscow, Bishop Tikhon of Yegoryevsk, Archpriest Georgy Studenov, Archpriest Vladimir Vigilyansky, the clergy of nearby churches - Archpriest Igor Fomin, Archpriest Andrei Novikov, students and teachers of Moscow State University. Rector Viktor Antonovich Sadovnichy, addressing the audience, drew a parallel between the opening of the Church of the Holy Martyr Tatiana and the current undertaking. Everyone understood that, on the one hand, we were participating in a historical event, on the other hand, we were starting to do one common, very important and very popular thing.

The practice of recent years shows that the presence of a temporary church and regular services contributes to the rapid formation of a community, the involvement of a significant number of people in the process of creating a parish, and, as a result, speeds up construction. In the near future we will try to build a temporary temple, begin to pray in it, and then begin construction of a permanent temple. However, we must not forget that the speed of construction of any temple depends both on intense prayer and on material capabilities.
- Is there a design for the future building? Will it fit into the ensemble of Moscow University (lately all buildings have been built in approximately the same style)?
- The project is at the development stage and will be approved by the hierarchy. Obviously, the status of the temple at the first and main educational institution of the country dictates certain conditions. For now I can say that it will be roomy, tall and very beautiful.
- How, in your opinion, should the mission at the university be organized so that young people do not develop hostility towards the Church or rejection from it? What is missing in this sense now? What are you going to do in connection with the construction of the new temple?
- The basic principles of mission, regardless of the context, were set out by the Apostle Paul, and his sermon in the Athens Areopagus (Acts 17, 22-31) is an excellent example of a missionary approach that is relevant at all times and in all situations. To begin with, you just need to be around and speak the same language with people. You should also add the time factor, that is, be patient, as one wise character from the famous work of Exupery said.
In addition, you need to understand that the mission is, first of all, people. One priest, even the most beautiful one, is clearly not enough here. Therefore, the role of Orthodox believers, professors, teachers and students, who must become “centers of crystallization” in a saturated solution, testifying to Christ by all available and legal methods, is extremely important.
When does hostility and rejection occur? Probably, when on the one hand there is violence, coercion, violation of personal space, and on the other hand there is misunderstanding, lack of adequate information, cliches and templates. I am sure that if there is internal culture, tact and delicacy on both sides, the likelihood of conflicts can be represented in the form of a curve tending to an asymptote.

I believe that first we need to build a temple so that students and teachers know that there is a place nearby where they can pray and feel at home. And in any case, we are committed to calm, thoughtful, high-quality and balanced work.
- Initially it was planned that the new temple would be attached to Tatyaninsky, but now it has received independent status. How will interaction be built between two different university parishes that have similar tasks?
- I hope that the Church of the Holy Equal-to-the-Apostles Cyril and Methodius will continue the traditions of the Church of the Holy Martyr Tatiana. One of the absolute advantages of the church on Mokhovaya is the “passionarity” of the parish in a good sense, if expressed in the terms of Lev Nikolaevich Gumilyov. The parish constantly creates and implements a huge variety of activities and events, and this often happens on the initiative of our parishioners. I would like to adopt the best features of the Tatyana parish and move them closer to the main buildings of Moscow State University. In addition, it is obvious that at first we will not be able to cope without the help of the clergy and parishioners of the Tatyana Church.
— Other churches in the area are also developing work with Moscow State University: Trinity on Sparrow Hills, St. Andrei Rublev in Ramenki. What should cooperation with them be like?
- MSU is about forty thousand students, over ten thousand members of the teaching corporation, forty faculties, research institutes and centers - the whole city! It would be extremely arrogant to believe that one parish, even a very strong one, could carry out missionary work and spiritual care for such a huge and complex organism. It is clear that effective work will require coordination and consolidation of everyone who is ready to devote themselves to service at the university. Each parish has its own strengths, its own identity, its own people with experience and connections - so naturally we will cooperate and collaborate.
