Znamensky Cathedral

- Orthodox cathedral of the Kemerovo diocese.

History[edit]

The current Znamensky parish was created in Kemerovo in 1989 and registered by the Commissioner for Religious Affairs. During the Soviet years, in the central part of Kemerovo there was a Church of the Sign, which was destroyed in 1960.

The first Liturgy of the parish was celebrated on Easter 1989 in a part of a residential building equipped as a church.

In 1990, a brick baptismal church was built. Vladyka Anthony, Bishop of Krasnoyarsk and Yenisei, in front of a huge crowd of people, consecrated the baptismal temple in honor of St. Vmch. George the Victorious and performed the first divine service there on December 10, 1990, on the patronal feast of the Icon of the Mother of God “The Sign”.

The construction of the Znamensky Cathedral also began in 1990. On October 14, 1995, the Intercession of the Most Holy Theotokos, the consecration of the lower church in honor of the holy Equal-to-the-Apostles Prince Vladimir was performed by His Eminence Sophrony, Bishop of Kemerovo and Novokuznetsk.

On May 26, 1996, His Holiness Patriarch Alexy II of Moscow and All Rus' solemnly consecrated the cathedral in honor of the Icon of the Mother of God “The Sign”, co-served by 9 bishops and more than 60 clergy.

Since 1996, the Kemerovo Diocesan Administration has been located on the territory of the cathedral.

Architecture and interior painting

The painting of the temple walls is under the constant care of the cathedral's rector. Since 1993, under the leadership of the artist A. Rabotnov, a group of specialists painted the refectory with scenes from the lives of saints.

In 2007, the artistic works were transferred to Tomsk artists; they use the latest technologies in applying paints, allowing them to wash off the soot that appears during the burning of candles.

Since 1999, the Znamensky Cathedral in Kemerovo has been classified as an architectural monument; excursions are constantly held there, accompanied by clergy of the temple.

Shrines[edit]

The cathedral's shrines are: the banners of the former Znamenskaya Church; dedicatory icons - the Mother of God of the Don, the Cathedral of the Archangel Michael and the Intercession of the Blessed Virgin Mary, donated by Governor A.G. Tuleev.

At the request of Bishop Sophrony, a copy of the Goalkeeper - the Iveron Icon of the Mother of God - was brought from the holy Mount Athos (Greece).

The temple also contains icons with particles of the relics of the twelve Apostles, brought from the village of Danilovka, Tyazhinsky district; St. John of Tobolsk, St. Philaret of Moscow, St. Joseph of Belgorod, confessor of Luke, Archbishop. Simferopol and Crimean, rights. Theodore of Sanaksar (Ushakov).

On April 26, 2008, Bishop Aristarkh of Kemerovo and Novokuznetsk made a solemn transfer to the Znamensky Cathedral ark with particles of the relics of 83 saints resting in the near and far caves of the Kiev Pechersk Lavra. The relics were received with the blessing of His Beatitude Vladimir, Metropolitan of Kyiv and All Ukraine.

On December 19, 2008, the solemn transfer of a particle of the relics of St. took place in the cathedral. Nicholas the Wonderworker, bishop. Myra - a gift to Bishop Aristarchus of Kemerovo and Novokuznetsk from Monsignor Andonius Nicholas, rector of the parish of St. Lucia in Rome, through Archbishop Antonio Mennini, representative of the Holy See in the Russian Federation. This piece of relics is constantly in the cathedral, in the reliquary of the icon of St. Nicholas the Wonderworker.

Current activities of the cathedral

Regular services are conducted by the appointed rector Vladimir Kurlyuta and priests Demchenko and Khit. Priest Vladimir understood well that it was not easy to acquire parishioners without a Christian education. The main church has not yet been built, and a Sunday school has begun operating in a formerly renovated store that once sold timber.

In parallel with the construction of the Orthodox shrine, Archpriest Vladimir is engaged in catechetical care of the city’s medical institutions, opening prayer and library rooms there. Services in them are conducted by the priests of the cathedral, church-going sisters and mothers, and on this basis the Sisterhood of Myrrh-Bearing Women is born.

The great reward for the cathedral under construction was the election of its cathedral to the newly created Kemerovo diocese. The department, headed by Bishop Sophrony, is installed in St. George's Church.

Story

In the city of Kemerovo, the first small wooden Church of the Sign, registered on November 12, 1947 by the Russian Orthodox Church community, stood in the central part of the city (on the site of a park near the modern building of the Central District Administration). With the beginning of the next stage of the fight against religion, on December 24, 1960, the community was deregistered, and the building was demolished in 1961 due to the proposed development of the temple territory. Since then, people have been forced to go to services at the only St. Nicholas Church in the city on the right bank of the Tom. The change in attitude towards the church since 1985 has made it possible to vocalize the requests and demands of believers. The oldest cleric of the diocese, Archpriest Alexy Kurlyuta, asks for the blessing of the ruling Metropolitan Gideon. The first letters to the authorities were sent from parishioners.

On March 24, 1989, a parish meeting was held with the participation of Dean Archpriest Alexy Kurlyut, at which 20 of those present familiarized themselves with the Charter of the Russian Orthodox Church, elected a parish council: chairman - Fr. Vladimir Kurlyuta, assistant to the chairman - Novikova Zinaida Danilovna, treasurer Svyatogorova Nina Dmitrievna; and also elected an audit commission. Soon, Marina Yakovlevna Morozova became the permanent treasurer until the end of construction. On March 26, 1989, priest Vladimir Kurlyuta, a graduate of the Moscow Theological Seminary and an MDA student, was appointed rector of the Novosibirsk and Barnaul Gideon.

On March 28, 1989, the executive committee of the city Council of People's Deputies decided to design a land plot with an area of 1.5 hectares between the street. Timiryazev, Lugovoy, Kavaleriyskaya and Gagarin - the empty territory of the former clothing market in the central part of the city. However, until late autumn, the obstacles caused by ill-wishers continued, and only on November 18, 1989, the next town planning council, after a terrible struggle and bickering, gave permission for specific actions.

In the spring of 1989, half of a private house adjacent to the construction site was purchased for a temporary church, in which the first liturgy was celebrated on the bright day of Easter. Since the Nativity of Christ, January 7, 1990, services began to be held in the acquired building of a former liquor store. On December 10, 1989, on the patronal feast day in honor of the Novgorod Icon of the Mother of God “The Sign,” the first, solemn religious procession and consecration of the foundation stone at the foundation of the temple took place. Through the economic administration of the Moscow Patriarchate, the architect M. S. Sokolov completed a sketch-idea. Based on the sketch-idea, Kemerovo architect Gennady Maksimovich Nekrashevich developed a design for the cathedral, in collaboration with designers F. F. Bobkov and I. S. Shapor.

Construction work on the baptismal church was carried out in the shortest possible time - from May 4 to December 1990, and on the patronal feast of the Cathedral of the Sign on December 10, Bishop Anthony of Krasnoyarsk and Yenisei consecrated the built baptismal church in honor of the Great Martyr. St. George the Victorious. Regular services are performed there by three priests: in addition to the rector, Fr. Alexander Demchenko and Fr. John Hit, who had previously been sextons there.

On Easter, April 26, 1992, bells were ringing over the city for the first time - bells made at the Ural plant were placed on a power line support adapted for a belfry.

On October 4, 1992, the parish Sunday school began operating in the renovated building of a former lumber store, the first teacher of which was Anatoly Gavrilovich Apenkin, who later served as a deacon in the monastery of St. Nicholas the Wonderworker in the village of Mogochino, Tomsk diocese. With the blessing of the rector, Fr. He took Vladimir under his wing and the nursing home on Yuzhny.

In 1993, the Kemerovo diocese was created and a bishop was appointed - Sophrony, Bishop of Kemerovo and Novokuznetsk, and on July 6, a department was installed in the center of the St. George Church of the Znamensky parish - a sign of the bishop's ministry. Divine services are held daily; the fourth priest, Fr. Boris Oparin, deacons Alexander Gorshkov and Vladimir Agibalov.

On September 15, 1993, His Holiness Patriarch of Moscow and All Rus' Alexy II, during his first visit to Kemerovo, visited the Cathedral of the Sign under construction and awarded a high patriarchal award to the rector, Fr. Vladimir Kurlyuta - Order of St. blgv. book Daniel of Moscow, 1st degree and the rank of archpriest.

On the Feast of the Intercession of the Most Holy Theotokos, October 14, 1995, in the concelebration of 28 priests and 6 deacons of the diocese, with the blessing of His Holiness the Patriarch, His Eminence Bishop Sophrony solemnly consecrated the lower church of the Znamensky Cathedral in honor of St. Equal to the Apostles Vel. book Vladimir. The consecration of the lower church of the cathedral was a truly pan-diocesan celebration, which was attended by more than 150 official guests - leaders of the region, cities and towns, enterprises, banking structures, as well as parishioners of many parishes of the diocese.

Since the fall of 1995, Prot. Vladimir Kurlyuta began to supervise the catechetical care of the city hospitals - church rooms and library branches were opened: in the regional hospital (Martynova G. A.), city hospital 10 (Days E.), children's multidisciplinary (Chernegova L. E.), infectious diseases 8 (nurse of this Taisiya Ivanovna Hospital), as well as in schools No. 63 (Mother Tatiana Oparina), No. 26 (Mother Elena Agibalova), boarding school No. 6 (attached to the library), and in pre-trial detention center No. 1 (Fr. Boris Oparin). On this basis, the Orthodox Sisterhood of Sts. was subsequently formed. Myrrh-Bearing Women.

On May 26, 1996, His Holiness Patriarch Alexy II consecrated the Znamensky Cathedral in the concelebration of Bishops Anthony, Altai and Barnaul, Dimitry of Tobolsk, Anthony of Krasnoyarsk, Arseny of Istrinsky, Sergius of Novosibirsk, Evgeny Tambovsky, Alexy of Orekhovo-Zuevsky, Archbishop Evlogiy of Vladimir and Suzdal . The celebration was attended by the leadership of the city and region, Leonida Georgievna Romanova. His Holiness the Patriarch brought with him many icons as a gift, the church was presented with a set for the Holy Eucharist with decorations, Archpriest Vladimir Kurlyuta was awarded a cross with decorations, the governor of the Kislyuk region M.B. was awarded the Order of St. Prince Daniel II degree, benefactors - 21 medals of St. good Prince Daniel of Moscow, 9 workers - with a patriarchal charter. Bishop Sophrony of Kemerovo and Novokuznetsk presented Alexy II with a panagia and a cross.

On September 1, 1996, a new Sunday School building was opened, equipped with audio and video equipment. The Diocesan Administration is located on the second floor of the building.

Since 1997, the Znamensky parish, being the center of the First Kemerovo Deanery, has been helping churches under construction in the village. Beregovoy (Archangel Michael), in the village of Komissarovo (St. Sergius of Radonezh), in the village. Andreevka (ap. Andrew the First-Called), in the village. Yagunovo (Apostle John the Theologian), in the village. Shishino (St. Seraphim of Sarov), later in the village of Panfilovo (Mc. Faith, Nadezhda, Lyubov and Sofia), Sheveli village (martyr Procopius), Metalplatforma village (martyr Tryphon).

From the first days of the existence of the Znamensky parish, a charitable refectory was opened. In December 1999, an agreement was concluded with the administration of the city of Kemerovo and the Center for Social Services and Protection of the Population of the Zavodsky District of Kemerovo on the organization of hot meals for needy citizens of the city in the refectory of the cathedral. This joint work continues to this day, and the Family and Children Assistance Center is now participating in it. Every day, children from disadvantaged or low-income families, as well as disabled people, pensioners and people in difficult life situations come to the refectory for lunch (up to 100 people a day in total).

The interior decoration of the Znamensky Cathedral is a constant concern for the rector and the parish. Fresco painting of the walls is carried out in parts of the cathedral. In 1993-1994. in the St. George Church, walls were painted by a group of artists led by a graduate of the Stroganov Art School, Rabotnov A.S., he continued to lead the painting of the cathedral until 2004, scenes from the life of St. Seraphim of Sarov was also painted in the refectory of the cathedral. Since 2007, Tomsk artists from the TROO “Union of Monumentalists, Sculptors, Designers” under the leadership of A. M. Kryuk have been painting the cathedral using technology that allows them to wash off the deposited soot.

In 1999, the Znamensky Cathedral was recognized as a monument of regional significance. All this makes it possible for a variety of groups to visit the cathedral: tourist; students of schools, colleges, university students under the guidance of teachers; groups from the Sunday Schools of the diocese. Cathedral clergy are used as tour guides. The director of the Regional Children's Excursion and Tourist Center presented the rector of the cathedral with an official letter of gratitude.
