In the middle of the 18th century, a miracle of healing occurred in the Church of St. Nicholas. Bedridden, the noble woman, having lost hope of recovery, awaited her death. But one day the Mother of God appeared to her in a dream and said: “Go to Moscow. In the temple on Pupyshev, find my image, on which will be the inscription “Quench my sorrows.” Pray before this icon and you will be healed.”
The rector of the temple where the relatives brought the sick woman provided them with all the icons that were kept in the temple. But among those that were on the walls, the patient did not recognize the image that appeared to her in a dream. While sorting through the old and dusty icons that were kept in one of the premises of the temple, she suddenly saw the image of the face of the Mother of God and shouted “It’s her!” Not being able to even raise her hand before, the woman suddenly crossed herself!
From that day on, the fame of this story spread among the people and pilgrimages began to be made to this icon.

Historical information
Initially, that miraculous icon was in the town of Shklov, Mogilev province, in the Church of the Resurrection of Christ. Today nothing is known about the fate of this image. The most ancient copy of this icon was brought by the Cossacks to Moscow in the 17th century and installed in the Church of St. Nicholas in Zamoskvorechye. This happened during the reign of the first king of the Romanov dynasty, Mikhail Fedorovich. Until the second half of the 18th century, the icon remained in oblivion, being located among others in one of the rooms of the bell tower.
But after a miraculous healing, she began to be revered as a miracle worker, and a separate chapel of the temple was built in her honor. The icon of the Mother of God “Quiet My Sorrows” also became famous during the terrible plague epidemic of 1771, about which numerous documentary evidence was compiled. But after one of the fires in Moscow, all documents about healings were destroyed by fire.
The celebration in honor of the miraculous icon takes place every year on January 25 in memory of the first miracle of healing. At the celebration, a prayer service is performed with the reading of the canon to the Most Holy Theotokos and the akathist.
Nowadays the most revered and ancient copy of this icon resides in the Church of St. Nicholas. In the middle of the 20th century, the holy image was restored by a parishioner of this temple, a restorer of the highest category, Vatagina.
Background to the veneration of the icon
The famous icon of Soothing My Sorrows rested in Belarus; later it was taken to Moscow by the Cossacks. But the miraculous Zamoskvoretsky list, which rested in the church in the name of Nicholas of Myra, in Sadovniki on Pupyshi, became famous throughout Russia.

"Quiet my sorrows"
At one time, no one remembered the face; apparently this happened due to a fire and temple reconstruction. The icon was removed to the far corner of the bell tower and was kept in a careless state for a long time. But the mercies shown through her by the Mother of God forced us to remember the shrine and give it a worthy place within the temple walls, and soon a boundary was built for the holy face in its honor.
The church kept books that captured on their pages many miracles favored by the prayer Quench my sorrows. A huge number of miracles occurred during the plague epidemic of 1771.
The icon of Soothing My Sorrows became revered as miraculous thanks to the following incident.
A lady, a resident of a distant suburb, suffered from a serious illness for a long time and did not get up from her painful bed. Neither the doctors nor her family believed in her recovery. Once in a dream she saw the Queen of Heaven, who ordered the relatives to take the sufferer to Moscow to the Church of St. Nicholas, find there the image of Soothe my sorrows and leave the sick woman alone with him to pray - in this case the lady would be granted the long-awaited health.
The woman woke up in fear and told her relatives about what she saw and heard in her dream. With the deepest faith and great hope, the family set out on a difficult journey. They found the temple, but did not find in it the desired image shown to the sick lady. In confusion, they asked the clergyman for help. He ordered the workers to bring all the stored Mother of God icons. Among them, dilapidated and dirty, an image with the caption “Quench my sorrows” was discovered. Seeing him, the patient was incredibly happy and, to the surprise of her relatives, made the sign of the cross on herself (before this her hands had not moved at all). The clergy of the church performed a prayer service, after which the woman, who had previously been preparing to die from a terrible illness, rose to her feet on her own.
This event occurred on January 25, 1760. Since then, this date has been established by the Church as the day of veneration of the image “Quench my sorrows.” In 1892, the text of a song of praise to the icon was compiled.
Iconographic type
The iconographic type of the icon of the Mother of God “Quiet my sorrows” is Hodegetria. This image is the most common and, according to legend, was written by the Apostle Evangelist Luke. "Hodegetria" translated from Greek means "Guide". The Blessed Virgin in this icon holds the Child with a scroll in her hands. A characteristic detail is the position of the left hand of the Blessed Virgin - she holds it, raising it to her face. The Mother of God seems to listen to the prayers offered to her. This purely human detail makes the image of the Mother of God closer to us, people. After all, the Most Pure Virgin was mortal, but chosen to become the Mother of the Savior. Documentary evidence has not reached our days when and by whom the icon of the Mother of God “Quench My Sorrows” was painted. The first mention of this image dates back to the 17th century. An icon of such a letter was kept in the Resurrection Church in the city of Shklov (Mogilev region, Belarus). In 1640, its list (copy) was brought to Moscow by the Cossacks. The image of the Mother of God was placed in the Church of St. Nicholas the Wonderworker on Pupyshi in Zamoskvorechye (modern Kosmodamianskaya embankment). However, fires occurred repeatedly in the temple, and it was rebuilt several times. As a result, the icon ended up on the bell tower and was forgotten.
