Kirill's name day according to the church calendar. List of saints

They say that a person's name has a huge impact on how his fate will turn out. Of course, each of us meticulously forges our own happiness and believes only in our own strengths, but the wisdom of our ancestors should not be discounted.

History knows many cases when people changed the names given to them at birth to others, and their lives changed dramatically. What is not proof that a name is inextricably linked with fortune? That is why its choice should be treated not just as a set of sounds, but as a symbol of good luck, happiness and harmony.

In this article we will talk about when to celebrate Angel Day for people named Kirill.

Between two calendars

Many people celebrate Christmas time without knowing what kind of holiday it is. In fact, this is a day on which the memory of the saint for whom a person is named at baptism is honored.

Kirill's name day is celebrated more than once a year. People with this name have Angel Day in almost every 12 months, and moreover, several times. This is due to the fact that all Orthodox believers in the Lord and Savior use two calendars at once - the Julian (old) and the Gregorian (the one that is now used everywhere).

The Julian calendar was used in Rus' until 1918 and the day when the Bolsheviks, having overthrown the old government and rejected the church, introduced the new Gregorian calendar. Nowadays, the difference in dates according to these two calendars is 13 days. Thus, Cyril’s name day according to the Orthodox calendar, in accordance with the new time calculation system, is celebrated:

  • January 31;
  • February 8, 17 and 27;
  • March 22 and 31;
  • April 3 and 11;
  • May 11, 17 and 24;
  • 22nd of June;
  • July 22;
  • 20 November;
  • 21 December.

Before the introduction of the Gregorian (that is, modern) calendar, Cyril’s name day was celebrated according to the church calendar:

  • January 18 and 26;
  • February 4 and 14;
  • March 9, 18, 21 and 29;
  • April 28;
  • May 4 and 11;
  • the 9th of June;
  • July 9;
  • November 7;
  • December 8th.

If you compare all of the above dates, you can see that now Cyril’s name day according to the Orthodox calendar comes 13 days later than it was almost 100 years ago.

Winter Christmastide

Do you know in honor of which saint the name Cyril is now used? Name days are not just a reason for congratulations, but also a time to honor the memory of your guardian angel.

December 21 is the day of remembrance of St. Cyril of Chelmogorsk, who became famous for converting many pagans to Christianity. He also built a temple and monastery in honor of the Epiphany of the Lord.

On January 31, we honor St. Cyril of Alexandria, one of the most influential figures in church history, a gifted theologian, an extraordinary and energetic person. It was he who fought with all his might against the heresy of Nestorius, a Syrian, who taught that God is the spirit that inhabited Jesus Christ, and Mary gave birth not from the Lord, but from an ordinary person, and therefore should be called the Mother of Christ.

Kirill's name day, which falls on February 8, is the memory of the Hieromartyr Kirill, Metropolitan of Kazan and Sviyazhsk. He was a very charismatic person and attracted people to him like a magnet.

He was listened to and revered for his love and unwavering faith in the Lord, as well as for his straightforward statements and inner light.

Kirill of Kiev was one of the first to introduce popular singing at church services in order to more fully introduce people to the church.

On February 17, the memory of St. Kirill of Novoezersk is venerated, who built two churches: in the name of the Most Holy Theotokos and in the name of the Resurrection of Christ.

Cyril's name day, celebrated on February 27, is the day of remembrance of St. Equal-to-the-Apostles Cyril, the Slovenian teacher, who, together with his brother Methodius, invented our alphabet.

Spring holidays

March 22 is the day on which we pay tribute to one of the forty warrior-martyrs, Cyril of Sebaste, who accepted a brutal death in the name of Christ.

He, along with 39 soldiers, was stripped naked and driven into an ice-bound lake by the pagan Romans. A bathhouse was heated nearby, in which you can warm up only by renouncing Christ.

After a while, the Romans saw that the soldiers were not freezing, and in anger they broke their legs and burned them alive.

Important

March 31 is the name day of Cyril of Jerusalem, a saint and archbishop who dedicated his life to the fight against the Arian and Macedonian heresies.

April 3 is the day of remembrance of the disciple of the Apostle Peter, Saint Cyril of Catania, Bishop of Sicilian Catania.

How to pray in front of the icon of St. Cyril

Before touching on the issue of prayer in front of an icon, it should be said that those who have any icons in their apartments should not treat them as decoration, a book or a souvenir. For a believer, an icon is, first of all, a reminder of Christian virtues and help in troubles.

It is believed that in addition to choosing an icon for yourself in accordance with the name, it is also important to know the life of the saint from whom you are going to ask for help.

Important! The Holy Fathers assure that the life of a holy man, a great martyr, must resonate with a person’s heart; the person praying must feel the closeness of his life and the life of his patron.

People most often turn to Saint Cyril with prayers who are in one way or another connected with obtaining knowledge and providing information - teachers, students, people holding high positions. The fact is that Saint Cyril also once taught and made speeches before the pagans, without experiencing fear.

More prayers for students:

  • Prayer to Sergius of Radonezh for studies
  • Prayer to Nicholas the Wonderworker before the exam
  • Prayer before the start of the school year

Praying in front of the icon of this saint, they ask for wisdom, eloquence and good luck. At the same time, you should not worry about exactly how and where help will come from; as a rule, prayer helps those who believe in it. In addition, any prayer should go to the heart and not bring harm to anyone.

Teachers and students most often turn to Saint Cyril with prayers

Interesting! It is believed that the most powerful prayers occur on the day of remembrance of the saint. Among the parishioners, a story is passed down from mouth to mouth about how several times during prayer the image of St. Cyril appeared before the icon.

Prayer to Saint Cyril

There is hardly a person in the modern world who has never seen icons or heard prayers. According to believers, God works through prayer, and sincere prayer from the heart works miracles. Turning to the icon of your patron saint provides the strongest spiritual support and help. Of course, there is a canonized text of the prayer, but if the person praying is not familiar with it, but prays “in his own words,” but from the heart, then there is no problem in this.

In addition, there are certain prayer rules:

  • if you pray to your patron in the morning, then for the whole day you can receive protection from an unkind environment, conflicts and tune in to good deeds;
  • Having prayed in the evening, a person receives protection in a dream from negative influences and witchcraft.

For memorization, you can offer a small troparion to the guardian angel:

Angel of God, my holy guardian, preserve my life in the fear of Christ God, strengthen my mind in the true path, and direct my soul to high love, so that I may receive great mercy from Christ God. Amen.

There is also a prayer to Cyril and his brother Methodius before the exam, but you should not think that after praying, you can throw away all your preparation, relying only on prayer.

Prayer provides great support during preparation, but not in place of it. Of course, the text of the prayer is a little complicated, but for those who truly believe it will not be difficult to memorize or read it.

Prayer to Cyril and Methodius

About Saints Equal-to-the-Apostles Methodius and Cyril! Now we earnestly resort to you and in the contrition of our hearts we pray: pray to the Lord to guide and turn us onto the path of salvation. Do not abandon us, your unworthy children (names), give us, through your prayers, zeal for Orthodoxy, so that we are kindled by it, we will preserve the traditions of our fathers, we will faithfully observe the charters and customs of the church, we will run away from all strange false teachings, and so in a life pleasing to God on earth prosperingly, we will be worthy of heavenly life in heaven, and there together with you we will glorify the Lord of all, in the Trinity of the One God, forever and ever.

Attention! When praying, it is very important to understand that an icon is an image of the holy face, so you need to pray not to the icon itself, but to turn to the one who is depicted on it.

What does the holy face help with?

They pray to Saint Cyril not only for good studies and a career as a speaker. Parents who have a boy with this name can ask for the child’s health, for protection from harm every day. The prayers of parents on a child’s birthday are considered especially effective.

Icon of St. Cyril

Turning to the image depicted on the icon helps overcome many situations:

  • fear conquers;
  • protects from troubles and enemies;
  • cleanses the soul;
  • reveals to the worshiper his destiny.

People often ask their saint to atone for their sins before God, because a spiritual patron is a kind of mediator between God and man. However, such prayer does not exclude the need for personal repentance.

The name Kirill in the Orthodox calendar (Saints)

The name Cyril is translated from Greek as “lord”.

He was at the court of the Rostov prince Konstantin II, and then Konstantin III. Saint Cyril accompanied them to the Horde more than once. From the life of St. Sergius, we know that during the Divine Liturgy, before the birth of their son, righteous Mary and everyone who prayed nearby heard the baby’s voice three times before reading the Gospel, during the Cherubic Song, and also at the moment when the priest said "Holy of Holies." After some time, their son Bartholomew was born. The parents made a promise to the Lord that they would dedicate the boy to Him. From his very first days, the child amazed everyone that on Wednesdays and Fridays he did not accept his mother’s milk, and if on other days Saint Mary ate meat, the baby did the same. When the Monk Mary noticed this, she herself stopped eating meat. Saints Cyril and Mary were known for their pious lives. They helped the poor, and also always received wandering prayer workers. And the holy couple taught their children to always welcome wandering monks and monks into their home. Unfortunately, not much information has been preserved about the life of Saints Cyril and Mary. It is known that in 1328 they moved to Radonezh from Rostov. Near this city there was the Khotkovsky Intercession Monastery. In those days it was inhabited by both female nuns and men. Saints Cyril and Mary accepted monasticism and became inhabitants of this monastery. A few years later they peacefully departed to the Lord. Icon of the Holy Venerable Cyril of Radonezh
He was born in 315 in Jerusalem into a strict pious family. When he turned 18, he became a monk. In 350, Saint Cyril became successor to the See of Jerusalem. Having become Patriarch, he began to fiercely fight heresy. For which the heretics took cruel revenge on him. He had to endure a lot of sorrows. Saint Cyril left 23 of his teachings to his descendants. Of these, 18 are for those who are just preparing to accept Christianity, and 5 are for the newly baptized. In 386, he peacefully departed to the Lord. Icon of St. Cyril of Jerusalem

"Slovenian Teachers". Equal to the Apostles Methodius and Cyril. Church calendar for May 24

The main church holidays, days of remembrance of saints and Orthodox shrines of today.

May 24 (May 11 according to the “old style” - the church Julian calendar). Monday of the 4th week of Easter (fourth week after the Holy Resurrection of Christ ). There is no post. Today the Russian Orthodox Church commemorates 10 Christian saints, known by name. Next we will briefly talk about them.

* * *

Equal to the Apostles Cyril and Methodius, Slovenian teachers . “In Christ there is neither Greek nor Jew” - this apostolic truth is interpreted in different ways today. But it is important for Orthodox Christians to know: the Church of Christ has never denied the rights of peoples to identity, traditions and the opportunity to pray in their native language. So, for us this was expressed back in the 9th century from the Nativity of Christ, when the holy brothers Methodius and Cyril brought the Light of the Gospel to the Slavic lands.

From the Lives of these great ascetics the following is known:

Brothers Cyril and Methodius came from the Greek city of Thessaloniki. Their path to educational service was different, but in the middle of the 9th century from the Nativity of Christ, both accepted monasticism and holy orders, and in 863, at the request of the Moravian prince Rostislav, they were sent from Constantinople on a spiritual mission to the Slavic lands. Where they translated the books of the Holy Scriptures and trained local clergy to perform divine services in Slavic. And Equal-to-the-Apostles Cyril also created the first Slavic alphabet - the Glagolitic alphabet...

The memory of the Thessaloniki brothers has always been sacredly preserved in the Slavic lands. However, in the Russian Church not many shrines were dedicated to them. Therefore, the fact that, as part of the program for the construction of new churches in Moscow, the majestic Church of Equal-to-the-Apostles Methodius and Cyril on Dubrovka was one of the first to be consecrated, was a return of debt to our enlighteners. And today, the day of Equal-to-the-Apostles Methodius and Cyril in Russia is not only a state holiday - the Day of Slavic Literature and Culture , but also a very important church celebration - the name day of His Holiness Patriarch Kirill . Whose primatial ministry is a continuation of the work of the holy teachers of Slovenia.

Also on the same day as these great saints, the memory of the Equal-to-the-Apostles Prince Rostislav the Great Moravian, .

Hieromartyr Mokiy of Amphipolis . An early Christian sufferer who accepted torture and the crown of martyrdom for preaching the Word of God and calls not to worship idols during the period of pagan anti-church persecution of the emperor Diocletian (Diocletian), who reigned in the Roman Empire in 284-305 from the Nativity of Christ. Saint Mokiy was executed around 295 .

Venerable Sophrony, recluse of Pechersk . Russian saint of the 13th century , who performed monastic spiritual deeds in the Far (Feodosiev) caves of the very first Russian monastery - the Holy Dormition Kiev-Pechersk Lavra. It is known that Elder Sophrony wore a hair shirt and a heavy iron belt, and also read the Psalter in full every day.

Saint Nicodemus, Archbishop of Serbia . Saint of the Serbian Orthodox Church, abbot of the Athonite Hilendar (Khilandar) monastery, who took the rank of bishop in 1316 from the Nativity of Christ. He became famous for the fact that in 1319 he translated the liturgical Jerusalem Rule (Typikon) into Slavic and introduced it into use in Serbia. He passed away to the Lord in 1325 .

Hieromartyr Joseph, Metropolitan of Astrakhan . Archpastor of the Russian Church, who suffered martyrdom from the rebels of Stepan Razin in 1672 from the Nativity of Christ.

Hieromartyrs Mikhail Belorossov, presbyter (1920) and Alexander (Petrovsky), archbishop of Kharkov (1940) . New martyrs and confessors of the Russian Church who suffered during the years of Soviet atheistic persecution.

Congratulations to Orthodox Christians on the memory of all today's saints! Through their prayers, Lord, save and have mercy on us all! We are happy to congratulate those who received names in their honor through the Sacrament of Holy Baptism or monastic tonsure! As they used to say in Rus' in the old days: “For the Guardian Angels - a golden crown, and for you - good health!”

Christ is Risen!

Thanks to this feature, he studies well at school, and, in addition, attends numerous developmental classes and clubs. The boy has slightly high self-esteem and strives to be a leader always and everywhere.

When is Kirill's name day?

Kirill is one of the most popular names for boys these days. This name comes from the ancient Greek language and is translated as “little lord”, “lord”. However, if you trust other information, the name comes from a Persian word and in this case is translated as “sun”.

The mystery of the name

Kirill is a boy, a guy and a man who throughout his life remains a mystery to everyone around him. A person always remains unpredictable, so it is almost impossible to understand him completely. Most likely, ambiguous moments will almost always exist.

For example, Kirill can be open and welcoming, friendly, but at the same time a very strict distance is maintained with unfamiliar people, so they have no right to count on knowing their true character. Contradictions exist even in the working mood. On the one hand, one can note purposefulness and desire for work, but at the same time laziness sometimes manifests itself spontaneously.

Advice

Unfortunately, laziness sometimes cancels out a significant amount of work done. Kirill is ready to be more demanding of other people. If he has any creative gift or other talent, he is ready for active development, but at the same time other people face significant criticism. Those with this name know how to present themselves.

Internal confidence helps with this. Kirill's weakness is beautiful and stylish women.

What to give for Kirill's name day?

Good gifts for Kirill would be:

  • Spiritual book. In a specialized store (preferably at a temple or church) you can purchase a Bible or prayer book in an elegant binding. This publication will decorate your home library or corner with icons.
  • Miniature safe. The desktop version can be made in the form of a globe or a book.
  • Photo gift. A cell phone case, decorative pillow, T-shirt or regular mug with a “portrait” of the birthday person is an excellent present.
  • Talisman stone: cat's eye, carnelian, moonstone, pearl.

Kirill's name day

The name Cyril comes from the ancient Greek word “Cyrus”, translated meaning lord, lord, barchuk, little gentleman. There is also a version of the origin of this name from the ancient Persian word for “sun”.

The patron saint of this quiet and calm name is the martyr Cyril of Gortyn , who lived during the reign of the emperors Diocletian and Maximian.

Being a righteous Christian, he endured many tortures and interrogations, after which he was thrown into prison. Having been miraculously freed, Saint Cyril went to Rome, where he began to preach in the Christian church.

During times of persecution, he supported Christians in every possible way and was later elected bishop in the city of Gortyn. In his old age, Saint Cyril was again brought to trial for repeatedly converting pagans to the Christian faith.

After much torment, the old man was thrown into the fire, but the Lord preserved him by extinguishing the flame. Saint Cyril was released. However, at the age of 90, he was nevertheless sentenced to execution, after which he was killed with a sword.

Also known to the church is Archbishop Saint Cyril of Alexandria, who zealously defended the Orthodox faith from heretics and suffered many persecutions from them in the fourth century.

Modern Kirill is tireless and inquisitive in mastering something new. The main trait of his character is ambition. This is a person with seriously inflated self-esteem.

He has no idea what an inferiority complex is. At least, that’s what those around him think, confident that everything is always fine with him.

Important

Kirill loves attention from the outside and constantly craves praise for his fine taste, intelligence, clothes, manners, and so on.

Women and children trampled snow on the beds - people believed that this would help increase the harvest.

On this day, the so-called “Woman's kicks” were celebrated. Women visited their midwives and treated them to gingerbread and pies. The main gift was considered to be beer prepared according to one’s own recipe. Water for it was collected from seven springs. Our ancestors believed that such a ritual extended the life of the family for many generations. A woman who neglects tradition and does not visit her midwife will incur female diseases.

It is customary to invite guests to St. Cyril's Day. Those, in turn, should come with gifts for all family members and especially children. The first to be placed on the table was a jug of honey drink prepared with special spices and without alcohol. It was believed that whoever drinks this drink will be healthy and happy for the next year. The family who prepared such a drink will live in prosperity and health.
