Marina of Antioch (Jordan)
In the city of Antioch, in the 3rd century, the pagan clergyman Edesima gave birth to a daughter, named at that time a rare name - Marina. Her mother died almost immediately after giving birth, and her father hired a nurse for his daughter. This woman turned out to be an Orthodox Christian, and from infancy she initiated Marina into the sacraments of the Christian faith.
Marina’s father learned about his daughter’s aversion from the pagan faith of her ancestors and acceptance of faith in Christ. Angered by betrayal and steadfastness, in response to all admonitions to come to his senses, Edesim renounces his daughter.
When Marina was 15 years old, she sincerely sought to devote her life and soul to the Christian god, fearlessly proclaiming her faith and ridiculing the worship of pagan gods. At that time, persecution of Christians was taking place in Antioch, especially aggravated for the approaching pagan holiday. Then many people were arrested, among whom was Marina.
The ruler of Asia, Olimvrius, who saw the young beauty Marina among the captives, was enchanted, and for the sake of her salvation, he asked to renounce Christ and become his wife. But all his admonitions and flattering speeches could not shake her faith and bring fear into her soul because of the coming trials. Angered by the refusal, Olimvriy ordered the girl to be tortured and tormented. Marina was brutally beaten, nailed and her body was torn with tridents. Even the ruler himself could not stand the sight of the torture taking place.
At night, when Marina was thrown into prison, an Angel appeared to her and healed her wounds. The next day brought torture again. They burned her with fire, and Marina prayed to the Lord to help her get through this and send her to receive holy Baptism through water.
Olimvriy, hearing her words, ordered Marina to be tied up and drowned in a deep vat, but this execution was not destined to happen. Above the submerged saint, light poured from the sky and a snow-white dove with a golden crown in its beak appeared. All the fetters binding her body fell away, and she emerged unharmed from the water, glorifying the Lord, His son and the holy spirit.
The people present at the execution were amazed by the miracle that occurred, and many, having believed, began to glorify the True Heavenly God. What was happening enraged Olimvrius, and he ordered to kill everyone who would glorify the name of Christ. Then a terrible thing happened: about 15 thousand true Christians were destroyed and Saint Marina herself was beheaded.
Located at the site of the execution and beatings of Christians, Theotimus secretly entered the body of the murdered woman and buried her, as expected, according to Christian custom.

Help from the Holy Martyr Marina
You can receive multifaceted help from the holy martyr Marina. It helps in protecting children and during childbirth, heals from illness and consoles in suffering.
But its main help lies in protection from malicious slander, slander and slander, from attacks of the enemy and evil spirit. It also helps in preserving crops from various pests and natural disasters.
The meaning of the image of a martyr in Orthodoxy
The Great Martyr Marina is a symbol of unshakable faith for Orthodox Christians. A 15-year-old girl defeated the dragon-devil with prayer and the sign of the cross. She paid her Christian debt - she suffered for Jesus, as Jesus suffered for people. The spiritual purity of the saint influenced Satan. According to one legend, in a dungeon Marina fought a dragon with a hammer and won. The defeated Tempter told the girl how he takes possession of souls. Confessing Christ during torture is a feat of a martyr, inspiring and strengthening in faith.
In Rus', the name Marina has been considered traditional since the 4th century. The saint protects from anger, slander, and unfair trial. They prayed to the Great Martyr next to the bed of the dying man, so that she would not allow the demon to take possession of his soul. In an old guide to Athonite sights of the 18th century, it is written that next to the relics of the saint, people were healed of mental illnesses and got rid of demons.
Marina Beriyskaya
There is evidence of the life of Saint Marina of Beria that has survived to modern times. This data was preserved thanks to Theodoret, Bishop of Cyrrhus, who had communication with the saint, and before whose eyes almost her entire life passed.
In the 4th century, in the Syrian city of Beria, two girls, friends, Kira and Marina, lived in wealthy respected families. But the life happening around, with its dubious joys, surrounded by vices, feasts and debauchery, did not suit the girls. They tried to distance themselves from the horror and hardships of this rich beauty, and in solitude they discussed their future living.
They passionately wanted to get away from worldly vanities and earthly pleasures, and save their souls. They saw their only salvation in accepting the teachings of Christ, the only way they could preserve the God-given purity of body and soul.
Only after waiting until they came of age and leaving parental care, they accepted Baptism and left their father’s houses and the city.
Kira and Marina, moving away from the city walls, found a secluded place on which they erected a closed wall, with only one small hole so that people could serve them water and bread. The girls did not take anything else and ate only this food.
So the hermits lived behind their walls, under the open sky, and steadfastly endured all adversity, glorifying the Lord. They spent fifty days in silence, and only interrupted it for one day, talking with people who came to them. A long ascetic lifestyle and passionate prayers turned people to the Christian faith. So they were joined by two girls, servants from a past pagan life, whom Kira and Marina helped in gaining perseverance and God's grace.
As Theodoret said, the girls did not limit themselves to renunciation of the worldly, their feats of silence and fasting. They burdened their existence by wearing heavy iron chains under which their bodies bent. No matter how the bishop asked them, during confession and communion, not to bother themselves with such a difficult test, wearing chains, but the girls continued to accomplish their feat early.
In their solitude and fasting, Kira and Marina lived for 40 years. Only twice did they go beyond their walls, making a journey on foot, without eating any food, to the Holy Sepulcher, in Jerusalem, and to the burial place of Thekla, the first Equal-to-the-Apostles Martyr, in Isauria.
Kira and Marina of Beria rested in the middle of the 5th century.

In your youth, you already loved Christ, choosing the path of holiness, sanity and righteousness, serving as an example for everyone with your life. Healed from her wounds and experiencing torment, she converted many atheists to the true faith. You illuminate my life and that of every servant of God who comes to you with faith in prayer. Intercede for all Orthodox Christians, strengthen our faith, piety and love for our neighbors. Cleanse from flaws, curses and dashing thoughts. Free from enmity, injustice and lies. Have mercy, pious Marina, and help us glorify the name of the Lord. In the name of the Father, and the Son, and the Holy Spirit, from now on and forever and ever. Amen.
Second
O holy virgin and great martyr Marino, true Bridegroom of your Christ, who suffered in the city of Antioch for the faith of Christ, passed through fire and water and found her home in the Kingdom of Heaven! From your youth, you have loved Christ, our God, with all your soul and with all your heart, the only one who desires to serve. You shone with the power of your piety, chastity and righteousness, having lived holy and precariously among the infidels. You, wonderfully healed from wounds by the grace of God, amazed your tormentors and brought many unbelievers to the knowledge of the True God. By the power of God you trampled upon the devil who appeared before your eyes, and you received grace to defeat the enemy of the human race in the battle. You are a bright lamp for the entire Church of Christ, a warm prayer book for God, and a speedy intercessor for all who come running to you with faith. O Saint Marino, guide us to the Heavenly Fatherland, give us zeal for salvation, direct our steps to doing the commandments of Christ, to the path of spiritual achievement and correction of life. Remember us with your prayer, help us all to live chastely, righteously and piously. Hear us, Passion-Bearer of Christ, and beg God, the Lover of Mankind, that through your intercession He may give peace and good order to our Fatherland, may all Orthodox Christians be affirmed in faith, piety and purity, may He strengthen brotherly love in us, may He cleanse us sinners from filth and vices May He save us from the actions of the enemy, and have mercy on us with His grace, and make us heirs of the Kingdom of Heaven, where together with you we will glorify the wondrous God, the Father and the Son and the Holy Spirit, in His saints, always, now and ever, and unto the ages of ages. Amen.
Origin of the name
The name Marina is Greek in origin. Translated into Russian it means “sea”. Although in Greek it has a slightly deeper meaning, the nuances of which are lost in translation. The fact is that initially Marina was the name given to the goddess of love Aphrodite, because she was born from the foam of the sea. That is, here there is an indication of the element of the sea, which gives life in its excitement and chaos. Therefore, this name is not just a reference to the sea. It is a reflection of the cosmic principle of world order.
