04/20/1690 (3.05). - Memory of St. Gabriel from the Jews martyred
Holy Martyr Child Gabriel († 1690)
- the son of the peasant Govdel from the village of Zverki (near Zabludovo), the estate of a Polish landowner. Gabriel was distinguished by his meekness and prayerfulness. Six years old in 1690, shortly before Easter, he was kidnapped by Jews, and on April 20 he was crucified by them on the cross with the mockery characteristic of crimes of this kind: depicting the crucifixion of the Lord Jesus Christ. The body of the little martyr was all cut up, drained of blood and thrown into the field. When the body was found on the third day, it had village dogs with it, guarding it and driving away predators and birds. The body showed no signs of decomposition.
The investigation established that several people took part in the murder, including a rabbi. They were tried by a Polish court and executed. Gabriel was buried first in the cemetery in the village of Zverki, where in 1720 his relics were accidentally found incorrupt and transferred to the crypt of the local church, then his local veneration began, the troparion and kontakion for him were compiled already in 1752. In 1746. this church burned down, but the relics survived (only the baby’s hand was burned, which soon miraculously healed, again being covered with skin) and were transferred to the Zabludovsky Monastery of the Bialystok district, and on May 9, 1775 to the Slutsk Holy Trinity Monastery. Numerous cuts are clearly visible on the relics.
In 1820 he was canonized by the Russian Orthodox Church, in 1893 the authorities of the Lithuanian diocese ordered to place his icons in all churches, in 1894 in the baby’s homeland in the village of Zverki a chapel was consecrated in his name. In 1908, Archbishop Anthony (Khrapovitsky) of Volyn and Zhitomir compiled the Service to the Holy Martyr Gabriel (Pochaev, 1908). Celebration of St. Gabriel was set on April 20 (O.S.). In Slutsk there was a special book in which cases of miraculous healing associated with the relics of St. baby Gabriel, whose veneration became nationwide in the Russian Empire.
During the First World War, in 1915, refugees from Bialystok transported the ark with the relics to Moscow, to St. Basil's Cathedral, where Archpriest served at that time. John Vostorgov. For the festive service and sermon on April 20 (Old Style), 1918, performed on the day of memory of St. baby Gabriel “tortured by the Jews” as for “anti-Semitic propaganda” Fr. John was arrested by the Bolsheviks at the end of May and executed on September 5. On October 20, 1919, the expert of the VIII department of the People's Commissariat of Justice, Spitsberg, began a case of “anti-Semitic agitation” in St. Basil's Cathedral. The main evidence was the troparion and kontakion of the martyr. Gabriel, engraved on the cancer. The clergy and guards of the cathedral were arrested in this case. On November 26, 1919, the shrine with the relics was seized and sent to the Moscow Police Museum.
Under the rule of the Bolsheviks, the Holy Trinity Slutsk Monastery was closed, and the relics were transferred to the atheistic museum in Minsk. Rediscovered in 1943 (under German occupation) and transferred to the Church of the Intercession of the Mother of God in Grodno. On September 21-22, 1992, the solemn transfer of St. relics of the martyr. Gabriel in a religious procession from Grodno to Bialystok (Poland) with a huge crowd of people (about 100,000 people), where the relics now rest in the St. Nicholas Cathedral. The day of September 22 is celebrated annually by the local Church as the day of the transfer of the relics of St. martyr baby Gabriel of Bialystok.
Prayer
Guardian of infantile kindness and bearer of martyrdom, blessed Gabriel, precious adamante of our country and denouncer of Jewish wickedness! We, sinners, come running to you in prayer and, lamenting our sins and being ashamed of our cowardice, we call to you with love: do not disdain our filth, this treasure of purity, do not detest our cowardice, long-suffering to the teacher, but more than this, seeing our weaknesses from Heaven Grant us healing through your prayers and teach us to be imitators of your fidelity to Christ. If we are unable to patiently bear the cross of temptation and suffering, then ask for your merciful help. Also, hear the mothers who pray for their children, pray for health and salvation for the baby from the Lord. There is no such cruel heart that the holy infant will not be moved by hearing about your torments, and even if, apart from this tender sighing, we are able to bring no good deed, but even with such a tender thought our minds and hearts, blessedly, have been enlightened for the correction of our life by the grace of God instruct. Instill in us tireless zeal for the salvation of the soul and the glory of God, and help us keep vigilant memory of the hour of death. Most of all, in our mortal dormition, demonic torment and thoughts of despair are driven away from our souls by your intercession and this is filled with the hope of Divine forgiveness, so that both then and now we may glorify the mercy of the Father, and the Son, and the Holy Spirit and your strong intercession forever and ever. Amen.

Martyr Gabriel of Bialystok
Martyr Gabriel of Bialystok
In the Orthodox calendar, among the martyrs of all times there are many children. Since the time of the Maccabean martyrs and the 14 thousand infants exterminated by Herod in Bethlehem, Orthodox piety has treated with special love precisely those children who became victims of sudden violent death. In their case, sacrificial death was combined with the purity of their innocence. Thus, youths and infants who were not yet fully mature in the physical sense became the true “salt of the earth” and “light of the world” (Matt. 5:13-14).
Hence the numbering of many infants and youths who were tortured for their faith by pagans in the first centuries of Christianity, as well as those who subsequently suffered from other faiths, heterodox and atheists, among the saints. Hence the popular veneration and subsequent canonization of the martyr baby Gabriel, named Bialystok, Zabludov and Slutsk.
Gabriel was born on March 22 (April 2), 1684 in the village of Zverki, near the town of Zabludov, Bialystok district, Grodno province, into a family of Orthodox peasants Peter and Anastasia Gavdel. Baby Gabriel was distinguished from other children by qualities of his soul that were unusual for his age. He grew up as a meek and gentle child. There was a noticeable tendency in him towards prayer and solitude rather than towards children's amusements and games.
His parents, despite the oppression to which the Orthodox of the Polish-Lithuanian Commonwealth were then subjected, who did not want to accept the Union of Brest, sacredly preserved the Orthodox faith. The proximity of the monastery had a great influence on the holy baby Gabriel, where during divine services he matured spiritually, learned to pray and came to know God.
Holy Martyr Child Gabriel of Bialystok
In 1690, the Govdel family suffered great grief. An innocent boy became a victim of savagery. On April 11, when the mother of six-year-old Gabriel brought lunch to her husband in the field, a village tenant, Shutko, entered the house. He caressed the child and secretly took him to Bialystok, where the baby was tortured. First they put him in the basement, where they pierced his side with sharp instruments to let out blood. After this, the martyr was crucified on a cross installed in a trough and stabbed with sharp instruments to release the remaining blood. On the ninth day the child died.
The executioners secretly took the lifeless body into the field and threw it at the edge of the forest near the village of Zverki. The holiday of Holy Easter was approaching. Hungry dogs ran to the body, birds of prey circled over it, but the dogs not only did not tear it to pieces, but even protected the body from the birds. The villagers heard the barking and discovered the victim of the brutality. The fanatics were found and punished, and a corresponding entry was left in the memoirs of the Zabludov city government.
At a gathering of people deeply moved by such atrocity, the body of the tortured baby Gabriel was interred near the cemetery church in Zverki, where it remained for about 30 years.
In 1720, during an epidemic, local residents tried to bury dead babies near the martyr’s grave, feeling the grace of this place.
One day they accidentally touched Gabriel’s coffin and discovered his incorruptible relics. They were transferred to the crypt of the Zverkovsky church. In 1746, the temple burned down, but the relics of Gabriel remained unharmed and were transferred to the Zabludovsky Monastery.
In 1755, due to the deterioration of the financial situation of the monastery, because of “its dilapidation and because of fears of attacks from infidels,” with the permission of the Patriarch of Constantinople and with the blessing of the Kiev Metropolitan, Archimandrite Michael (Kozachinsky) transferred the relics of Gabriel to the Slutsk St. Trinity Monastery.
Relics of the Holy Infant Martyr Gabriel
Gabriel of Bialystok was canonized by the Russian Orthodox Church in 1820 and is revered as the patron saint of children; his memory is celebrated on April 20 (May 3) and May 9 (22). The Church reports numerous cases of healing from holy relics. Gradually, the veneration of the martyr baby Gabriel was established throughout the Russian Empire.
Together with the earthly martyrdom of the baby Gabriel and his simultaneous birth for a new, better life, we received a special intercessor for us sinners before the throne of the Most High.
In the 1930s, the Slutsk Trinity Monastery, where the relics were kept, was closed, and the holy relics of Gabriel were transferred to the Museum of Atheism in Minsk. In 1944, the holy relics were transferred from Minsk to the Church of the Intercession of the Mother of God in Grodno, where they remained until September 21, 1992. In 1992, with the blessing of Archbishop Sava (who became the primate of the Polish Orthodox Church in 1998), the relics were solemnly transferred to St. Nicholas Cathedral in Bialystok, where they remain to this day, being an object of pilgrimage.
In the village of Zverki today there is a convent of the Nativity of the Blessed Virgin Mary, where a temple was built in honor of St. Gabriel of Bialystok. This place is also a place of Orthodox pilgrimage for both the Russian and Polish Orthodox Churches.

That year marks the 300th anniversary of the discovery of the relics of St. martyr baby Gabriel and the end of the epidemic...
“In 1720, a pestilence swept through the entire territory of the Bialystok district. There was barely time to bury people. In the village of Zverki, they tried to place dead children closer to the grave of the baby Gabriel, feeling the unusual grace of this place. One day, during a burial, they accidentally touched the martyr’s coffin and, to the great surprise of everyone, they discovered the incorrupt remains of a baby. The news of this spread with lightning speed among the Orthodox believing people. Popular legend connects with this event numerous healings that took place at the grave of the holy infant martyr Gabriel and the end of the epidemic, which served as a reason for his veneration. The found relics were reverently transferred to the crypt of the local church in the village of Zverki...” (Alexander Katrich. Holy Martyr Child Gabriel of Bialystok (Zabludovsky). - Kharkov, 2003. - p. 7.)
Holy Martyr Infant Gabriel, pray to God to deliver us from the epidemic of lies and deceit...
