Taisiya Egyptian

Memorial Day: 23.05.

A woman's life took place in the 5th century. She lived in Egypt with her relatives. When her rich parents gave up their souls to God, she began to engage in charity work. Anyone in need of treatment could turn to her and receive help. The house served as a shelter for wanderers. She was surrounded by love and reverence.

After a while, the inheritance began to melt away before our eyes, the girl herself was now in need. During this difficult stage of life, ungodly people begin to hover around. The woman falls under their influence. It happened that the monks whom she had once helped came into the house. Seeing Taisiya in such a state, they were upset and turned to John Kolov, their Abba. He responded, went into the sinner’s house, looked into her eyes and tears flowed from her eyes.

The hostess was surprised by this reaction and asked what was wrong with him. The elder said that a demon could be seen on her face, playing and having fun, and he was sad that the woman had departed from Christ. The girl trembled and began to ask for advice.

After a short time, Abba John and Taisiya set off silently into the desert. The wanderers spent the night there. Having baptized his companion, the monk laid her down at the head of the sand. He took a nap at a distance. The next morning, he began to wake him up to go further, but it turned out that the sinner was dead. The man was upset that she did not have time to take communion and become a nun in order to atone for her sins.

At that very moment, the voice of God consoled him that one hour of repentance for a harlot is more important than others that last many days, when they are not so sincere and selfless.

Taisia of Egypt Thebaid

Memorial Day: 21.10.

The life tells that the saint was born to a harlot, who introduced her to her work. Being very beautiful, the girl drove men crazy, ruined them, and caused all sorts of suffering.

Once, the Rev. visited the sinful house for a conversation. Paphnutius the Great. His words were not in vain; Taisiya made a grand bonfire of her treasures in one of the city squares. Afterwards she went to a monastery and settled in a cell for 3 years, where she ate sparingly only once a day.

After the expiration of time, St. Paphnutius asked Anthony the Great whether the recluse had received the Lord's forgiveness. All monasticism began to pray for God to give a sign. This happened in the dream of Pavel the Simple, where he dreamed of a bed guarded by beautiful beauties. A voice from heaven said that it was intended for the harlot Taisia. Paphnutius told the cell attendant about the good news. She fell ill two weeks later and died. Thus the saint was forgiven.

Great Forgiveness

When three years had passed, Saint Paphnutius came to Anthony the Great to ask whether the Lord had forgiven Taisia. Then Anthony ordered all his monastic disciples to pray that the Lord Himself would give them an answer. After a while, Paul the Simple had a vision of three virgins of extraordinary beauty guarding a heavenly bed. Paul was delighted, he thought that this bed was intended for Father Anthony, but a voice from heaven told him that it was for the harlot Taisia. Thus, Paphnutius, having learned the will of God, went to Taisia’s cell to take her out and say that the Lord had forgiven her her sins. Two weeks later, illness overtook her, and three days later Saint Taisia peacefully departed to the Lord. Her name day is now celebrated on October 21.

The Taisis, in deep repentance, received mercy and forgiveness from the Lord. Thus, Taisiya’s name day is celebrated three times a year, as mentioned above: April 4, May 23 and October 21.

Christian icon of Saint Taisia

The life story of Saint Taisia did not begin very simply and righteously. Having a beautiful appearance from birth, the girl led a shameful lifestyle. Because of carnal lust, many men brought her a lot of gold and gifts. Seducing her fans, Taisiya brought them to complete ruin; many began to kill each other right on her doorstep. It so happened that one of the elders was able to prove to her the vileness of her actions and convince Taisiya that she would hold herself accountable to the Almighty for what she had done.

In the holy icon, Taisiya already looks completely different - in formal clothes and in repentant prayer. Seeing the elder as a messenger of God, Taisiya burned all her treasures in the square, calling on everyone to repent of their sins, and went to the monastery. Having lived only 15 days after purification, Taisiya died, and the Lord forgave her sins and honored her with the Kingdom of Heaven. For Christian believers, the icon of Taisiya of Egypt has a special meaning. There is no condition in life that one is allowed to despise. Even criminals can achieve forgiveness and the greatest reward through sincere repentance. The Lord is ready to hear and accept every sinner, the main thing is to come to Him.

note

But the life and work of Taisia of Egypt itself is known in more detail. It existed in the fifth century on the territory of Ancient Egypt. At the hour when her wealthy father and mother were dying, she began to practice God-fearing life and devoted herself to good intentions and support for the sick and powerless.

Monks who came from the desert to the city quite often visited her monastery in order to sell their own baskets. Taisiya was revered and respected, she enjoyed great respect among the people.

However, after her own diligent life, her financial situation noticeably decreased over time. And the woman was also driven by need.

During this period, a large number of people of bad behavior appear in Taisiya’s society, and she is influenced to lead a chaotic life.

After this information reached the monks from the desert monastery, who had previously visited the home of Blessed Taisia, they were very upset by this situation.

They went to appeal to Abba John Kolov and called on their own sister in Christ Taisia to come to the aid, who had done a huge amount of good for them. Father John responded approvingly to this petition and moved towards the Blessed woman.

When he saw her, he sat down close and looked attentively at her for a long period of time, and then bowed his head and began to sob.

In the future, the Most Holy One asked why he was crying, to which he replied that the reason for that state was a hellish game, which was reflected in her appearance. He asked her about why the girl did not recognize the Almighty, was his activity also unpleasant for her?

Important

Then, as if a veil had fallen from Taisiya’s eyes, she began to ask the old man questions about repentance, if she had any at all, then she would do everything possible. As a result of this, Immaculate Taisia left after John. When morning came, he noticed that Saint Taisia was lifeless.

He began to grieve that Taisiya’s spirit was killed, since she did not have time to repent in her earthly existence, join and become a nun.

And as soon as he thought about this, the elder heard a chant that proclaimed that Taisiya had been forgiven a few hours before her own death.

From now on, every Orthodox believer also honors her name day. Taisiya, according to the church calendar, celebrates her day in the spring on May 23. However, that's not all. In fact, there was another Holy One who bore this name, and in some ways their existence was similar.

Another saint named Taisia was called Taisia of Egypt. She existed in the third century and was the daughter of a harlot. Her mother taught her her own craft. Thus, she began to lead a riotous lifestyle and played with the stronger sex, ruining their wallets.

  • Having found out about this, Saint Paphnutius the Great appeared to her on his own. The conversation with him forced Taisiya to reconsider her views on the whole of existence. After the conversation, she went to the municipal square and burned all the wealth that she had obtained in such a dirty way.
  • And subsequently she followed Paphnutius to a nunnery, where she became a recluse and tried once a day for three years.
  • A few years later, Elder Paphnutius moved to Anthony the Great in order to find out whether the Almighty had forgiven Taisia’s sins. He ordered that a prayer be offered to all the brethren, after which one of the monks named Pavel Besprostoy was shown a vision during which it became obvious that the Immaculate Taisia had been forgiven.

Advice

After this, the Most Holy One returned to the temple and rushed to Taisiya with a speech that the Lord had forgiven her her grave sins. He intended to take her out of the cell, but the girl resisted, but still the Reverend managed to take her outside. After 15 days, Most Holy Taisia fell ill and died.

Important

However, such a predisposition does not yet indicate Taisiya’s cunning; most often it simply concerns her diplomacy, and Tasya herself may perceive this quality of hers as long-suffering.

Sometimes it begins to seem to her that she forgives people a lot, moreover, even adapts to them, but when her cup of patience is full, all the accumulated emotions and grievances suddenly break free! So it turns out that this is not long-suffering at all, but just ordinary secrecy, because instead of silently enduring, one could try to resolve the misunderstanding in a calm atmosphere.

The very bright and beautiful ancient Greek name Taisia means “wise”, “fertile”, “late”, “belonging to the goddess Isis”. Orthodox Christians celebrate Taisia’s name day several times a year, since more than one saint bore this name.

Of these, only three are known: Taisia the Martyr, Taisia the Egyptian (5th century) and the Venerable Taisia the Egyptian of Thebaid (6th century). When studying when Taisiya celebrates name days, one should carefully consider the history of these saints.

After all, it was faith in the Lord Jesus Christ and sincere repentance for their sins that saved them from the flames of hell.

Very little is known about Taisiya the Martyr, only that she accepted martyrdom for her bold and firm confession of the faith of Christ. The name day of Taisia the Martyr is celebrated on April 4 according to the modern calendar.

But the life of Saint Taisia of Egypt is known in every detail. She lived in the 5th century in Ancient Egypt. When her wealthy parents died, she began to lead a pious life and devoted herself entirely to charity and helping the sick and infirm.

Monks who came from deserts to cities to sell their baskets often stayed in her house. Taisiya was loved and revered, she enjoyed great respect among people.

Advice

But after all her diligent charity work, her financial fortune gradually depleted. And she, too, was overtaken by need.

At this time, people of bad behavior appear around Taisiya, and she begins to lead a disorderly life.

One day, monks who had previously stayed with Taisiya came from a desert monastery. Seeing her unhappy and sinful, they were greatly saddened, because she always showed them her love. Calling their Abba, whose name was John Kolov, they asked him to help Taisia.

He immediately went to her and, sitting next to her, looked intently into her eyes and began to cry. She became worried and asked why he was crying.

He answered that he saw Satan playing on her face, and began to cry tearfully about why she didn’t like Jesus, why she took the path contrary to the Lord. The girl was imbued with such accusatory words and trembled about whether she could repent.

The elder replied that there was, and forced her to follow him. Abba John was very surprised that Taisiya immediately went after him, all in tears. She did not say goodbye to anyone and did not even give any orders about her property.

Peaceful demise

When they reached the desert, they had no choice but to spend the night in the sand.

Having made a head of sand for her, first baptizing her, he put her to sleep, and he also lay down at some distance from her, having prayed before that. In the morning, when he got up, he found Taisiya dead.

note

He was very frightened by the fact that she died without repenting, without receiving communion and without becoming a nun, as he wanted.

And then suddenly he heard the voice of God, who said that the hour of her repentance was more important than the long-term repentance of others who do not do it so selflessly. In this amazing way, the Lord gave John an answer to his question about forgiveness of sins for Taisia, who received it for her sincerity and determination in repentance.

Now the Orthodox also honor her name day. According to the church calendar, Taisiya celebrates her day on May 23. However, that's not all. In fact, there was another saint who bore this name, and in some aspects their fates were very similar.

  • When approaching the question of when is Taisia’s name day, it is worth remembering another saint - Taisia of Egypt. It is written in the life that she was the daughter of a harlot, who taught her her craft.
  • Taisiya was distinguished by rare beauty, so clients were willing to pay a lot of money for her, which is why they suffered real ruin. One day the Monk Paphnutius the Great came to her, wanting to talk with her. After their conversation, Taisiya collected all her earned treasures and burned them in the square of her city.
  • And then she went to the convent for Saint Paphnutius. There, secluded in a cell, constantly mourning her sins, she spent three years in seclusion, eating only once a day.

Martyr Taisiya

The holy martyr Drosida was the daughter of Emperor Trajan (98–117), a cruel persecutor of Christians. In 99, he renewed the previous law that prohibited secret societies and indirectly affected Christians, and in 104 he issued a special law against Christians.

Starting from this year, persecution continued until the end of his reign. At that time, the bodies of murdered Christians were often left unburied to intimidate others. Five Christian virgins: Aglaida, Apollinaria, Daria, Mamphusa and Taisiya took upon themselves the feat of burying Christians.

They secretly carried away the bodies of the martyrs, anointed them with incense, wrapped them in shrouds and buried them. Having learned about this, Princess Drosida, a secret Christian who had not yet received Baptism, asked the holy virgins to take her with them when they went to perform the burial of Christians.

Important

On the advice of the groom of Saint Drosida, a court dignitary of Hadrian, guards were posted near the dead to seize those who were burying them. On the very first night, Saint Drosida and five virgins were captured. Recognizing his daughter among the prisoners, Trajan ordered her to be kept separately in the hope that she would come to her senses.

The remaining holy virgins were sentenced to be burned in a copper smelter. They bravely accepted execution and were awarded martyr's crowns. Tripods for Trajan's new bath were forged from copper mixed with the ashes of martyrs burned in the furnace.

However, while these tripods stood in the bathhouse, not a single person could enter there: everyone who crossed the threshold fell dead. When the priests realized why this was happening, they advised them to take away the tripods.

Then Hadrian suggested that the emperor melt down the tripods and make from them five statues of naked virgins, similar to executed martyrs, and place these statues in front of the entrance to the imperial bath for reproach and desecration. Trajan agreed.

When the statues were erected, the emperor saw in a dream five pure lambs grazing in paradise, and a shepherd who said to him: “O most lawless and wicked king! Those whose images you planned to expose for reproach, the Good and Merciful Shepherd took from you and settled here, where in time the pure lamb Drosida, your daughter, will arrive.” Waking up, the lawless Trajan flew into a frenzy and ordered two huge furnaces to be flooded and to be heated daily. The royal command was posted on the stoves: “Men of Galilee, worshiping the Crucified One, save yourselves from a great many torments, and us from our labors - make sacrifices to the gods. If you do not want to do this, then let each of you voluntarily, in whatever way he wants, plunge himself into this oven.” Many Christians voluntarily submitted to torture.

Having learned about this, Saint Drosida also decided to accept martyrdom for Christ. In her imprisonment, she offered prayers that the Lord would help her get out of prison unnoticed. And God heard her prayer: the guards fell asleep.

Once free, Saint Drosida went to the stove, but began to think to herself: “How can I go to God without wearing a wedding garment (that is, without having received Baptism), because I am unclean. But, King of kings, Lord Jesus Christ, for Your sake I left my royal position, so that You would deign me to be at least a gatekeeper in Your Kingdom.

Baptize me with Your Holy Spirit." Having prayed, Saint Drosida anointed herself with the holy myrrh, which she had taken with her, and, plunging into the water three times, said: “The servant of God Drosida is baptized in the Name of the Father, and the Son, and the Holy Spirit.” The saint hid for seven days, indulging in fasting and prayer.

Advice

At this time, Christians found her and from her stories they learned about everything that had happened. On the eighth day, the holy martyr Drosida went to the red-hot furnace and threw herself into the fire.

Characteristics of the birthday girl Taisiya:

From the ancient Egyptian language - presumably the name means “dedicated to Isis.” It is possible that it comes from the Greek name Thais - a hetaera known in ancient Greece - the girlfriend of Alexander the Great.

As a rule, a woman with this name has a very independent, but rather secretive character. She is undoubtedly proud, but her innate caution inclines her not to advertise her spiritual qualities, so for all her pride, Taisiya prefers to be quite modest and balanced. Until one day she unleashes her inherent impulsiveness.

Like a cat that can endure for hours, waiting for the right moment, and only the movements of its tail reveal its excitement, so Taisiya knows how to control herself, but she doesn’t have a tail, and therefore it can be quite difficult to guess her true thoughts.

Taisia of Egypt Thebaid

When approaching the question of when is Taisia’s name day, it is worth remembering another saint - Taisia of Egypt. It is written in the life that she was the daughter of a harlot, who taught her her craft. Taisiya was distinguished by rare beauty, so clients were willing to pay a lot of money for her, which is why they suffered real ruin. One day the Monk Paphnutius the Great came to her, wanting to talk with her. After their conversation, Taisiya collected all her earned treasures and burned them in the square of her city. And then she went to the convent for Saint Paphnutius. There, secluded in a cell, constantly mourning her sins, she spent three years in seclusion, eating only once a day.
