Council of Ecumenical Teachers

The Council of Ecumenical Teachers falls on February 12. Basil the Great, Gregory the Theologian and John Chrysostom made such a contribution to the development of theology and the understanding of the holy scriptures that a great dispute arose as to which of them should be superior. The strife went so far that the believers began to divide into Gregorians, Basilians and Johannites. Is it possible to compare them, because each had their own special talents.

One day three saints appeared to Metropolitan Evkhaitsky, he saw them equal before God. At their request, Blessed John established their celebration on one day, and an icon of John Chrysostom with Gregory the Theologian and Basil the Great was also painted.

The prayer of St. John Chrysostom is also read before communion.

I believe, Lord, and I testify in the hearing of all that You are truly the Christ, the Son of the Living God, who came into the world to save sinners, of whom I am the first (greatest). I also believe that this is Your Most Pure Body, and this is Your Most Priceless Blood. So, I pray to You: have mercy on me and forgive me my sins, voluntary and involuntary, which I have committed in word and deed, consciously or unconsciously, and grant me, without condemnation, to be a partaker of Your Most Pure Mysteries for the remission of sins and for eternal life.

Accept me today, Son of God, as a participant in Your mystical supper, for I will not reveal the secret to Your enemies, and I will not give You such a kiss as Judas; but, like a thief, I call upon You: remember me, Lord, in Your Kingdom.

May the communion of Your Holy Mysteries be not for judgment or condemnation for me, Lord, but for the healing of soul and body.

The petition is read with special words from the prayer book. But the clergy say that it is allowed to address the saint in one’s own words.

Prayer for help and intercession:

“O great saint John Chrysostom! You received many and varied gifts from the Lord and, as a good and faithful servant, you multiplied all the talents given to you for good, for this reason you were truly a universal teacher, as every age and every rank learns from you.

You are the image of obedience to the youth, the luminary of chastity to the young, the mentor of hard work to the husband, the teacher of kindness to the old, the rule of abstinence to the monk, the leader of those who pray, inspired by God, the enlightener of wisdom to those who seek wisdom, the inexhaustible source of living words to those who speak kindly, to those who do good. - the star of mercy, the ruler - the image of the wise, the zealot of truth - the inspirer of boldness, the righteousness of the persecuted - the mentor of patience, you were everything to everyone, and you saved everyone.

Over all of these you have acquired love, which is the bond of perfection, and with that, as if by the power of the Divine, you have united all the gifts in your one person, and here you have shared the reconciling love, in the interpretation of the words of the apostles, you preached to all the faithful.

We, sinners, each one of us having our own talent, the unity of spirit in the union of the world are not imams, we are vain, irritating each other, envious of each other, for this sake of our gift we are divided not into peace and salvation, but into enmity and condemnation.

Moreover, we fall to you, the saint of God, overwhelmed by discord, and in contrition of heart we ask: with your prayers drive away from our hearts all pride and envy that divides us, so that in many places there will be one church body, so that, according to your prayerful words, we will love each other and with one mind we confess the Father and the Son and the Holy Spirit, the Trinity, Consubstantial and Indivisible, now and ever and unto ages of ages. Amen."

It is very important that the prayer request be pronounced in simple, not abstruse words. You need to express the main idea so that it comes from the depths of your soul, sincerely. It is not allowed to be distracted by extraneous sounds and activities. If the prayer request is said at home, then you need to ensure peace and quiet during this time so that you can be alone with your thoughts.

In order for the petition to be heard, it must be read every day at the same time for 40 days. It is forbidden to ask for material things; saints do not help in resolving such issues. If you have the opportunity to visit a temple, then you should give preference to reading the prayer of John Chrysostom for every hour within the walls of the church.

How does the icon of John Chrysostom help?

The saint received many God's gifts and will help people asking for this in prayers. In his sermons, he repeatedly said that talents are used not for development, but for pride, ambition, and envy. Talents should be combined to create. Therefore, in prayers they ask to get rid of pride and irritability, to give love and mutual understanding, to send peace to the family, to love your neighbor as yourself.

For sacred ministers of the church, turning to the saint is especially necessary. Those who serve the Lord encounter obstacles along the way in spiritual struggle. Singers, readers and sacred ministers turn to him with a request to deliver them from temptations and protect them. He is the benefactor of theologians, preachers, and scientists.

His instructions teach how to forget evil and love virtue, how to use biblical truths in life, how to stop caring about money-grubbing and focus on spiritual care, because all people will have to answer to the Lord.

History of the life of the God-bearer

John was born into a pious and wealthy Christian family. The saint's father, an Antioch officer, ended his life almost immediately after the birth of his son.

The young mother decided not to marry again and devote her life to raising a child.

Infancy

Little John showed a love of science from childhood, and he especially liked to study the Holy Scriptures. His teachers were famous philosophers and orators of that era.

Growing up, the young man increasingly felt the need to communicate with the Heavenly Father and spent a lot of time praying.

Having accepted Baptism, the young man began to study God-bearing sciences from famous holy fathers: Flavian, Meletius and others. He dreamed of becoming a monk, but his mother persuaded him to stay in the world and follow her dream: she really wanted her grown-up son to become a prototype of his father - a pious Christian and officer. John fulfilled her request.

But when it was his mother’s turn to finish her earthly journey, he took monastic vows.

Serving God

The saint spent a lot of time in prayer and doing theological works, and later retired to live in the desert. Having taken a vow of silence, he lived for several years in a distant cave.

But from numerous strict fasts, poor nutrition and high physical activity, John began to experience health problems, which forced him to return to his native Antioch.

Serving God

Upon his return, the God-bearer was ordained a deacon, then ordained to the priesthood. For his wise sermons among the people, he was named “Chrysostom.” For ten years, John carried the Word of God to the people, and was famous for his love for mankind and mercy.

A little later he was appointed Archbishop of Constantinople.

But, despite the highest rank, he lived modestly, and his life became a model of true priesthood.

Rules for praying before an icon

Prayer is a sincere and confidential communication between the prayer book and the saint who stands before Christ for him, and implies some kind of request.

John Chrysostom. Gallery of Shchigry icons

But how to construct a “conversation” correctly so that the Pleaser hears the request and helps the person?

There are basic rules of prayer that must be followed:

the prayer must be sincere, there should not be a drop of lies or pretense present in it; it is forbidden to be distracted by extraneous sounds and conversations, a person must be focused; one must think about the saint to whom one is praying, and about those people for whom the petition is being offered; prayer, uttered hastily in memorized words, without feeling, will not please the saint, will upset him and will not bring any benefit; you cannot ask for high material wealth and for something that could harm a brother in Christ; before starting the prayer, it is advisable to ask the priest for a blessing on reading prayers, confessing sins and receiving communion; the prayer request must be said repeatedly, and over a long period of time; it is possible that the saint will fulfill the request in a few days, or perhaps he will have to wait several years for the request to be fulfilled - therefore, one must not lose faith and the Lord, through the prayers of the saint, will definitely reward the prayer book for his work, patience and faith.

Church prayer is considered stronger than home prayer, because the temple is the House of God, it is here that the Lord is invisibly present. Here the request of the prayer book is combined with the fiery faith and requests of other parishioners, which makes them more spiritual and purer.

Advice! You can come to the temple and read a prayer to the saint at any time when the church is open, but it is better to do this during the service.

Church service

His friend, Basil the Great, who had previously entered monasticism, had a strong influence on him, urging him to withdraw from the world. Only the mother’s sadness stopped her from taking a decisive step. John was a reader in the temple, only after her death did he retire from the world for 4 years to a monastic settlement. He lived two of them in a cave in complete solitude and silence. He wrote a number of outstanding works there, including Six Words on the Priesthood, a monument of pastoral theology that has become a guide for priests to this day.

In 386 he was ordained a presbyter, which delighted most of the population and all his many admirers.

He knew the Gospel and the Scriptures perfectly, inspired by the Holy Spirit, he could explain them clearly, he was well versed in the sources, he knew them practically by heart. To this day, not a single interpretation is complete without the use of his works.

His love for Christ and his preaching made a deep impression on people, and soon the word Chrysostom was added to his name. People from other countries, ascetics from Egypt came to listen to him, pagans gathered in thousands and converted to Christianity.

Having become a bishop in Antioch, he was engaged in charity work, building hospitals, and every day up to three thousand beggars were fed at the walls of the church.

His talent as a preacher brought him such fame that it reached Constantinople, and John Chrysostom was appointed archbishop in February 398.
