Troparion, tone 4
The Church of the firstborn triumphs,/ and the mother rejoicing over her children will rejoice,/ even as the wisdom of the same name/ with the triple theological virtue of equal generations./ You I and the wise virgins behold the ignorant Bridegroom God’s Word,/ with her we also rejoice spiritually in their memory, saying:/ Trinity champions,/Faith, Love and Hope,//affirm us in faith, love and hope.
Translation: The Church of the firstborn triumphs (Heb. 12:23), and rejoices, receiving a mother who rejoices over her children. With the same name as wisdom (Sophia from the Greek σοφία wisdom), she gave birth to three children, according to the three theological virtues (faith, hope and love - 1 Cor. 13:12). She sees them, together with the wise virgins (Matthew 25:1-13), betrothed to the Bridegroom God the Word, and with her we spiritually rejoice in their memory, saying: “Trinity protectors, Faith, Love and Hope, strengthen in faith, love and hope us".
Brief Lives of the Holy Martyrs
During the reign of the Great Pontiff Caesar Trajan Adrian Augustus, a pious widow named Sophia lived in the capital of the Roman Empire. Translated from Greek, this name means “Wisdom”.
And, indeed, living up to her name, the woman was like “wisdom coming from above, first, pure, then peaceful, modest, obedient, full of mercy and good fruits, impartial and unfeigned.” (James 3:17).
Married to her pagan husband, who dearly loved her, Sophia gave birth to three daughters, naming them after the most revered virtues among Christians: Faith, Hope and Love.
Useful materials
Soon after the birth of her youngest daughter, the woman became a widow. However, having suffered a heavy loss, she did not give up and did not succumb to despondency. On the contrary, with even greater zeal, she took up works of mercy and remained in tireless prayer.
Her prayers to the Lord for her dear daughters were especially fervent: in them, Sophia asked for His help in raising children as true Christians, worthy of their names.
Years passed. The daughters grew up. Together with them, the virtues inherent in them flourished: sincere faith in God, unshakable hope in His Providence and unfeigned, all-forgiving love for others. The young women were so wise and pious that rumors about them spread throughout the capital.
Rumors also reached the ruler of those places, Antiochus, an ardent pagan who worshiped idols. The ruler wished to personally see the wonderful maidens about whom such wonderful fame had spread.
However, after talking with them, he immediately realized that these virgins were Christians, and at the same time openly professing their faith. This meant that they had to be immediately reported to the emperor, because Christians at that time were considered a threat to the existing religion and were subject to severe persecution.
St. mchch. Faith, Hope, Love and their mother Sophia
By order of the emperor, the family was brought to the palace. Seeing the bright, noble faces of the young women, Adrian first tried with gentle speeches to convince them to renounce the Christian faith and make a sacrifice to the pagan gods.
But the virgins did not succumb to crafty speeches and firmly declared their devotion to the true God, and wise Sophia answered him so passionately and eloquently that she plunged the pontiff into confusion, and the dispute had to be interrupted.
The martyrs were given three days to think, placing them under supervision in the house of the noble Roman woman Palladia, who volunteered to persuade her mother not to risk the lives of her children. However, Palladia did not succeed: the prisoners, having spent the time allotted to them in reflection and prayer, only became stronger in their desire to suffer for Christ.
Such persistence angered the emperor. Christianity quickly spread throughout the Roman Empire and threatened to undermine the cult of worship of the old gods. Adrian decided to demonstratively punish the disobedient and subject them to cruel torture.
Twelve-year-old Vera was the first to be called. The young woman was beaten and then placed on a red-hot metal plate, on which the saint remained for 2 hours. Then it was decided to throw the unfortunate woman into a cauldron of boiling oil.
The girl meekly endured the torment, offering songs of praise to the Creator and asking her to strengthen her strength. To the surprise of those present, the saint’s body remained completely unharmed. Seeing such a miracle, many of them believed in Christ.
Having failed to achieve renunciation, the tormentors became weak. And then, disgraced, tormented by shame and pride, the emperor condemned the young woman to execution. The saint accepted her firmly and resignedly, serving as an example for the younger sisters.
Ten-year-old Nadezhda, like her sister, fearlessly endured the same torment. But when they wanted to throw it into the cauldron, a miracle happened: the metal melted like wax, and the boiling liquid in it burst out, scalding the crowd of observers.
People were seized with panic; they realized that this was God’s obvious intercession for his saint. However, not believing in Providence, the emperor, overcome by madness, sentenced his second sister to death. The holy martyr was beheaded with a sword.
The younger sister, Lyubov, was only 9 years old. Even Caesar, sparing her youth, hesitated. He again tried with flattery and persuasion to persuade the girl to renounce the true faith.
However, the youngest daughter of the wise Sophia justified the name given to her at baptism. Above all earthly things, above her own life, she loved the Lord Jesus Christ and wanted to suffer for Him, sharing the fate of her sisters.
The torturers could only be amazed at such an incomprehensible faith. The saint was thrown into a blazing furnace, but the fire did not harm her: the flame flared up and, escaping from the red-hot muzzle, spread to her tormentors, turning them into burning torches and instantly burning them to ashes.
Adrian also suffered: he was severely burned and suffered from unbearable pain. In a rage, he ordered the executioners to immediately execute the holy youth, and Lyubov was immediately beheaded.
Seeing the torment of her children and not being able to somehow alleviate their suffering, the unfortunate mother did not stop praying to God, asking for spiritual strength for them.
After the execution, she put the bodies in expensive sarcophagi and buried them on a high hill. Shedding tears, the woman still thanked God for helping her young daughters to endure the trials sent to them to the end and to accept the crowns of martyrdom with dignity.
Three days later, the saint rested on their grave and was buried there by pious Christians. The mother shared the martyrdom of her children, although not in body, but in heart, having suffered for the true God, bringing Him as a gift the most precious treasure she had - her three virtuous daughters.
Kontakion, voice 1*
Honest Sophia of the most sacred branches, / Faith and Hope and Love, appearing, / wisdom enshrouded by Hellenic grace, / both the sufferer and the victorious, appearing, / Vlada, an incorruptible crown from all The kin of Christ got stuck.
Translation: Venerated Sophia (from the Greek σοφία wisdom), you became the most sacred descendants, Faith, Hope and Love, you bridled Hellenic wisdom with grace and, having suffered, became bearers of victory, crowned with an incorruptible crown from the Lord of all Christ.
Signs for September 30
In order not to cry and grieve later, on this day you need to grieve and lament more. Moreover, this should be done even by those who have nothing to blame for their fate. You just need to grieve for your neighbors, acquaintances, or simply feel sorry for those who are unhappy. The main thing is to do all this sincerely and with all your heart, truly empathizing with all those suffering. In this way you can protect your family from grief, misfortune and illness.
Also on this day, married women should go to the temple and buy three candles. Two of them are placed there near the face of Christ, and the third must be brought home. Exactly at midnight, it will need to be placed in the center of a loaf or even ordinary bread, lit and a request whispered over it 40 times so that all evil will go away and there will be peace and comfort in the house. The next morning, this bread had to be eaten to the last crumb with all household members, without sharing it with any strangers.
Prayer 1*
Oh, holy and praiseworthy martyrs Vero, Nadezhda and Lyuba and valiant daughters of the wise mother Sophia! We come to you now with fervent prayer. What else can intercede for us before the Lord, if not faith, hope and love, these three abiding virtues, in whose image they are called, the very things of which are revealed? Pray to the Lord, that in sorrows and misfortunes He may cover us with His indescribable grace, and preserve His glory, like the unsetting sun, that He may be worthy to see. Help us in our humble prayers, may the Lord God forgive our sins and iniquities, and may He have mercy on us sinners, and may Christ God grant us His bounty, to Him we give glory, from the Beginning His Father, and His Most Holy and Good and Life-Giving Spirit, now and forever, and to the ages of ages. Amen.
3rd prayer to the sufferers Vera, Nadezhda, Love and their mother Sophia
“Oh, holy sufferers Vero, Nadezhda and Lyuba, and the wisest mother Sophia! We now come to you with fervent prayer. Pray to the Lord, that in sorrows and misfortunes He may cover us with His indescribable grace, the servant of His Own (names), and preserve Him, and may He be worthy to see His glory, like the unsetting sun. Help us in our humble prayers, may the Lord God forgive our sins and iniquities, and may He have mercy on us, the wicked, and may Christ God vouchsafe us His own bounties, to Him we send up glory, with His Beginning Father, and His Most Holy and Good and Life-giving Spirit, now and ever and unto ages of ages.”

The saints naturally had an undoubted mind, when they were quickly brought into the royal chambers, Tsar Adrian appeared with a bright face, joyful hair and a courageous heart. Ruler, in vain your conscientious face is undaunted and having taken away the wisdom of Sophia, postpone your own tribunal for another time and send you to a certain noble wife, who has been with you for three days, your mother, who is wise and inspired by God, teaches you day and night. In the same way, to please you, we cry out to you:
Rejoice, three blameless lambs of Christ, who have gathered within themselves the crown of virtues; Rejoice, three virtuous sisters, who have shown firm faith, undoubted hope and unfeigned love for the Lord God.

Hearing the wisest mother of her daughter before the king, fearlessly confessing Christ and saying that they only want to suffer and endure bitter sweet torments for the sake of Jesus Christ, rejoicing at the great and praying to God, may he strengthen me in the torments that lie ahead. This will be praised; let us sing to the first daughter of the wise mother:
Rejoice, Vero, unmerciful one who received the sweetest beat of the Sweetest for Jesus’ sake; Rejoice, your cut-off breast, like two crowns of purity, sacrificed to the Lord.
Rejoice, for from your ulcer your blood flowed instead of milk; Rejoice, for you were laid on a red-hot iron.
Rejoice, for you were thrown into a boiling pot; you were not scorched enough, you were harmed below; Rejoice, you who calm the heat of our passions with heavenly coolness.
Rejoice, you who extinguish the fire of our torment in illness; Rejoice, you who mark us with a sign of faith in the midst of adversity.

Having seen the good-victorious sister, Holy Faith, it was joyful to suffer for Christ, and they themselves wanted to lay down their souls for Him: the ruler began to test the Holy Hope, and seeing that he and his sister were of the same mind, he was given to torment, but had no success. We, the holy Nadezhda, will sing and glorify her about her wisdom in a pleasing way:
Rejoice, Nadezhdo, who was mercilessly beaten, but who did not lose her bright hope in the Lord; Rejoice, you who endured your torment without complaint in silence.

Rejoice, Lyuba, for your love for Christ led to many worldly beauties without extinguishing; Rejoice, for having rejected all the caresses and gifts of the king, you laid down your soul for the Lord.
Rejoice, for your love did not drown the river of troubles and suffering; Rejoice, for the Lord Jesus you were stretched out on wheels, beaten with a rod, pierced with drills and thrown into a fiery furnace.
Rejoice, for in your fierce torment you were strengthened by the power of God; Rejoice, through your blood, love for the sake of your Immortal Bridegroom, Christ, poured out, inspiring love in our cold hearts.
Rejoice, having clearly shown us that all sweet torments are endured for the sake of love; Rejoice, who showed us how Divine love leads to an endless tummy.
Rejoice, you who assured us with prophetic things that any Divine revelation is immortality; Rejoice, for no torment could separate Love from the love of Christ.
Rejoice, who in torment apostolically prophesied, for neither sorrow, nor oppression, nor persecution, nor famine, nor nakedness, nor failure, nor a blade will separate you from the love of God; Rejoice, you who were truncated at the head by the sword of love for the sake of Christ.

How do prayers to Barbara the Great Martyr help?
The relics of Saint Barbara, by the Providence of God, have been preserved to this day. They rest in Kyiv, in the Vladimir Cathedral. Our saints are intercessors before God. Turning to Barbara the Great Martyr, Christians offer prayers for health, healing, and women’s happiness.
Since ancient times, Saint Barbara has been asked to pray to God for help from sudden death. It is not for nothing that the Great Martyr is considered the patroness of all people whose professions involve risk to life.

Prayer to your saint named hope
Religious reading: prayer to your saint named hope to help our readers.
The icon depicts holy martyrs. In 137, the sisters Vera, 12 years old, Nadezhda, 10 years old, and Lyubov, 9 years old, one after another, after suffering for the faith of Christ, were beheaded before the eyes of their mother. On the third day after this, Saint Sophia also died of grief at their grave. Memory of the holy martyrs on September 17, old style.
In the 2nd century, during the reign of Emperor Hadrian (117-138), the pious widow Sophia lived in Rome (
The name Sophia means wisdom
).
She had three daughters who bore the names of the main Christian virtues: Faith, Hope and Love. Being a deeply religious Christian, Sophia raised her daughters in the love of God, teaching them not to become attached to earthly goods. The rumor that this family belonged to Christianity reached the emperor, and he wished to personally see the three sisters and the mother who raised them. All four appeared before the emperor and fearlessly confessed their faith in Christ, risen from the dead and giving eternal life to all who believe in Him.
Surprised by the courage of the young Christian women, the emperor sent them to a pagan woman, whom he ordered to convince them to renounce their faith. However, all the arguments and eloquence of the pagan mentor were in vain, and the Christian sisters, flaming with faith, did not change their convictions.
Then they were again brought to Emperor Hadrian, and he began to insistently demand that they make a sacrifice to the pagan gods. But the girls indignantly rejected his order.
“We have a Heavenly God,” they answered, “we want to remain his children, but we spit on your gods and are not afraid of your threats. We are ready to suffer and even die for the sake of our dear Lord Jesus Christ.”
Then the angry Adrian ordered the children to be subjected to various tortures. The executioners started with Vera. In front of her mother and sisters, they began to beat her mercilessly, tearing parts from her body. Then they placed her on a hot iron grate.
By the power of God, the fire did not cause any harm to the body of the holy martyr. Maddened by cruelty, Adrian did not understand the miracle of God and ordered the girl to be thrown into a cauldron of boiling tar. But by the will of the Lord, the cauldron cooled down and did not cause any harm to the confessor.
Then she was sentenced to beheading with a sword.
“I will joyfully go to my beloved Lord the Savior,” said Saint Vera. She courageously bowed her head under the sword and thus surrendered her spirit to God. The younger sisters Nadezhda and Lyubov, inspired by the courage of their older sister, endured similar torments.
The fire did not harm them, then their heads were cut off with a sword. Saint Sophia was not subjected to physical torture, but she was doomed to even more severe mental torment from separation from the tortured children. The sufferer buried the honest remains of her daughters and did not leave their grave for two days.
On the third day, the Lord sent her a quiet death and accepted her long-suffering soul into the heavenly abodes. Saint Sophia, having endured great mental anguish for Christ, together with her daughters was canonized by the Church. They suffered in 137.
The eldest, Vera, was then 12 years old, the second, Nadezhda, was 10, and the youngest, Lyubov, was only 9 years old. Thus, three girls and their mother showed that for people strengthened by the grace of the Holy Spirit, lack of bodily strength does not in the least serve as an obstacle to the manifestation of spiritual strength and courage.
With their holy prayers, may the Lord strengthen us in the Christian faith and in a virtuous life. PRAYER TO THE HOLY MARTYRS FAITH, HOPE AND LOVE, AND THEIR MOTHER SOPHIA
Beaded icon of Holy Hope
For modern craftswomen who want to show their talents, bead embroidery is an interesting direction. The Hope icon identifies one of the three Christian virtues. The life story of Saint Nadezhda is closely connected with the history of her family.
Nadezhda's mother was Sofia, and her two sisters' names were Vera and Lyubov. The family was deeply religious and did not hide it. Sophia taught her daughters to bring to people the virtue that corresponded to the name of each daughter. The three sisters read many apostolic books and prophecies, and over the years their virtue only increased.
When you know the meaning and origin of any icon, bead embroidery of the icon is doubly fascinating. Sofia's daughters, including Nadezhda, obeyed their mother in everything, were diligent in housework and prayed a lot. At the same time, not one of them hid their faith in the Lord God, openly bringing it to the people.
The events took place in Rome in the second century AD. This time was associated with persecution of Christians. The ruling emperor, having learned that the mother and her three daughters were openly preaching their faith, ordered them to be brought to him. Both mother and sisters understood that death awaited them. And it will be long and painful.
They constantly prayed to God, asking for courage and strength to endure bodily torment and suffering.

Left without a husband, she continued her pious life. She constantly prayed and fasted. She raised her daughters the same way.
The children were raised in such a way that all their lives they tried to bring into the world those Christian virtues the names they bore. As the children grew older, their virtue increased. The three sisters knew the apostolic books and prophecies well.

Nadezhda Roman Youth
In the 2nd century, a pious family lived in Rome. Widowed early, the pious mother Sophia raised three daughters named after virtues: Faith, Nadezhda
and love. In the family of the pious widow Sophia, peace and love for God’s word reigned; the woman raised her children in love for the Lord, the ability to see and appreciate eternal concepts, giving them preference over worldly and perishable ones.
Envious people and foul-mouthed people who tried to tarnish the good name of mother Sophia and her daughters reported to Emperor Andrian /117-138/ about the Christian family. And then the emperor wished to see the entire pious family: mother Sophia and her daughters Vera, Nadezhda and Lyubov.
Presented before the emperor, the girls and their mother confessed their faith in Christ. The courage of the children and their deep faith amazed the emperor, and he ordered the children to be taken away from their mother and given to a pagan to be raised. But the Lord’s faith was so strong that eloquence and persuasion had no effect on the children.
Faith, Hope and Love were unshakable in their faith. When the emperor began to demand that the children make sacrifices to the pagan gods, the girls replied: “We have a Heavenly God,” the girls answered, “we want to remain his children, but we spit on your gods and are not afraid of your threats.
We are ready to suffer and even die for the sake of our dear Lord Jesus Christ.”
The emperor, distraught by these words, ordered the children to be tortured in front of their mother. The executioners started with twelve-year-old Vera.
“I will gladly go to my beloved Lord the Savior,” said Saint Vera. She courageously bowed her head under the sword and thus surrendered her spirit to God.
In front of her younger sisters and mother, Vera was brutally beaten, tearing off pieces of her body, and then they placed her body on a hot fire. But the Fire did not harm the body of the Holy Martyr. Then they threw her into boiling tar, but this torture did not bring pain to the body of the martyr. Then the head of the Holy Martyr Vera was cut off.
The younger sisters, ten-year-old Nadezhda and nine-year-old Lyubov, seeing the courage of their older sister, bravely endured all the torture. And they were also beheaded. The sisters were faithful to the Christian faith, strong in their love for the Lord!
Saint Sophia was not tortured physically, like girls, but all tortures were. to which the children were exposed occurred in front of the mother’s eyes. Distraught with grief, Saint Sophia took the bodies of her children and buried them. The woman did not leave the grave day or night, but two days later the Lord sent a quiet death and accepted the long-suffering soul of the mother in Heaven.
