Interpretation of dreams in Christianity for a woman or man - interpretation of dreams from dream books
At the beginning of the 4th century, when Emperor Constantine converted to Christianity, the Romans stopped persecuting Christians. They say that a dream forced him to change his faith. It is not surprising that early Christianity followed the Hellenistic concept that dreams are a dialogue with the gods. Tertullian (early 3rd century), one of the first Christians to write about dreams, states that “mankind came to know God through dreams.”
How did ancient Christians interpret dreams?
Ordinary sleep is mentioned sparingly in early Christian sources. They mainly describe visions. Since antiquity, asceticism has been a way to achieve visions similar to those that arise through the process of incubation. Incubation continued to be practiced, but no longer in the sanctuary, but at the grave of the martyr. Christians retained the fasting and prayer adopted by the pagans, but an official ban was imposed on the interpretation of dreams, contrary to what the Bible says: “I speak to him in a dream” (Numbers 12:6) and “Your young men will see visions, and your elders you will be enlightened by dreams” (Acts 2:17).
Tertullian believes that Christians should interpret dreams differently. The new approach, described in books but limited by accepted ideology, inspired Christians to seek visions but discouraged them from having ordinary dreams. This approach helped replace the pantheon of pagan gods with a monotheistic God, and consequently the host of demons became embodied in the only force capable of opposing God, Satan. Most dreams were attributed to Satan, and therefore they sought to get rid of them.
Features of dream interpretation in Christianity
Christian authors, wanting to move away from the Hellenistic classification of dreams, turned to other methods based on a new perception of man's relationship with the divine. And yet Tertullian talks about the same sources of dreams as the Greeks (Stoics) - god, soul, demons. Only now they are presented in the spirit of Christianity. In Christian interpretation methodology (as Tertullian explained) it was necessary to first establish the source of dreams. Do they come from God (if all ideological requirements are met), the Devil (the most common source) or from man himself. The last source was also called the soul, which is influenced by the mind, body and daily worries. “It is considered a bad sign when dreams arise from excessive eating or drinking or from the needs of the flesh” (standard explanation of wet sleep).
St. Augustine (354–430) believed that dreams help to understand how the human mind works, but in a dream one cannot comprehend divine truth. When, following the views of Christians, we turn to the vision of St. Peter about his ascension to the third heaven (2 Cor. 12: 1-4), we have doubts. Are we talking about physical vision coupled with sensations or about spiritual experience? Was the apostle asleep or awake when this happened? Does the text describe a dream or an ecstatic vision? To resolve this contradiction, St. Augustine established differences between different types of visions.
Types of dreams in Christianity
One of them is ekstasis - vision in the waking state. Therefore, many centuries later, Hildegard of Bingen (1098–1178), a Christian mystic, could not describe his visions as dreams (to avoid suspicion of diabolical instigation), nor as the result of sensory experience, but only as waking visions. Vision is ego “seeing” in an altered state of consciousness. It is a pity that it is contained in a body whose abilities are limited - be it a dream or reality. It is difficult for the body to free itself from the shackles of reality, so it is difficult to draw the line between vision and hallucination, as Hildegard himself admits in Liber Scivias - And if visions are indistinguishable from dreams, then their images are also deceptive. A person experiences a vision while somewhere between sleep and reality, and the state of the body plays a significant role in achieving the vision. In other words, the quality of the vision - divine or diabolical, inspired or gloomy - depends only on the state of the body.
The cycle has ended. Dreams gradually lost their magical nature. They were no longer miraculous messages. Dreams did not remain the privilege of rulers and priests for long; they came to all people without exception.
How did Christians' interpretations of dreams change in the Middle Ages?
Aristotle and Hippocrates expanded the boundaries of the understanding of dreams when they added bodily sensations to it. Artemidorus and Macrobius had no doubt that dreams generated by subjective emotional sensations are unworthy of attention - enupnion. Gradually, the belief in the divine origin of dreams underwent changes so much that Artemidorus, in a dispute about whether dreams come from the gods, says: “I do not ask, like Aristotle, whether the cause of our dreams lies outside of us and comes from the gods, or whether something causes them within us, which in a special way inclines the soul to what is natural for it. And yet I agree that we are in the habit of calling everything unexpected a gift from God.”
Christians have returned to the early belief that dreams are revelations sent by God to a chosen few. Such communication was not available to ordinary people. Their dreams were the devil's instigation. In Europe, the Church held political and spiritual power for centuries. She dictated to the proletariat a way of thinking and norms of behavior. The belief that God communicates directly with man threatened the authority and interests of the Church. The Word of God could only be proclaimed by the Church at the behest of the Pope. People no longer needed to communicate directly with God through dreams. Any form of communication with God outside the Church was undesirable. Anything that contradicted this doctrine was considered heresy. Gradually, people abandoned the belief in the divine origin of dreams, and over time, the art of dream interpretation simplified to the level of prejudice, becoming the craft of gypsies and fortune tellers.
The discrediting of dreams in the era of Christianity led to the fact that they had no value in the European world. And even the semantic significance inherent in dreams by nature, which nevertheless remained, was lost with the advent of Cartesian mechanistic dualism in the 17th century. Dreams were finally thrown into the world of fantasy, hallucinations and irrational experience.
From the Pacific coast of China to the Atlantic shores of Europe, from the equatorial zones of the Indian subcontinent to the Arctic reaches of Scandinavia, theories abounded, often interpreting dreams in the same way. New ideas were required for their development. Previous knowledge was no longer enough, and the subject of study itself acquired a dubious reputation, as people increasingly believed in science. It is possible that you and I have partly inherited the prejudices of the past. The long wait ended when the 20th century arrived and Sigmund Freud (1856–1939) gave us the next key to the secret of dreams.

Prophetic dreams. Predictions. Interpretation of dreams in the Bible
Hello David!
I'm afraid my answer will not suit you. But you wrote to a believing Christian, and not to a psychic - an esotericist.
The main thing: there is good and evil in the world!
God, Jesus Christ, their Angels are good. Satan and his minions - the fallen angels - are the side of evil. The task of good is to change a person’s character and save him for a happy life here, and then in Eternity! The devil wants in every way to lead a believer away from God, to interest him in any mystery, so that a person does not recognize the God of Love, His Son - Jesus Christ, who gave his life for the sins of mankind, and also so that believers do not study the Bible, do not analyze themselves for sins (in why the Bible is a good helper) and did not try to get rid of them...
For these purposes, the forces of evil use many methods, a large role of which belongs to mysticism, false miracles and false predictions.
The Bible teaches that only God knows the future:
“Thus says the Lord, ... besides Me there is no God, for who is like Me ? ... let them announce the coming and the future ... did I not tell you and predict it ?” (Isa. 44:6,7,8)
“Who among them predicted this? I, I am the Lord, and there is no Savior besides Me. I have foretold and saved and declared” (Isaiah 43:9,11,12)
“ I have declared from the beginning what will happen in the end , and from ancient times what has not yet been done” (Isaiah 46:10)
“If any prophet predicted peace, then only he was recognized as the prophet whom the Lord truly sent, when the word of that prophet was fulfilled” (Jer. 28:9).
“If a prophet speaks in the name of the Lord, but the word does not come to pass and is not fulfilled, then it was not the Lord who spoke this word, but the prophet who spoke this out of his boldness, do not be afraid of him” (Deut. 18:22)
Here we clearly see that the Creator claims that only He is God and no one knows the future except Him! It is thanks to the fulfilled predictions that one can believe that the messengers are broadcasting from the Creator!
“For the Lord God does nothing without revealing His secret to His servants the prophets” (Amos 3:7)
The Bible makes many predictions that have come true. Read about Bible predictions in my book “Meet God.” Chapter "Bible Prophecies Fulfilled." But it is better to read the book in its entirety, it contains many facts about the reliability of the Bible. You can also partially read about the fulfillment of prophecies in the material “Earthquakes by Location”
Today it is widely believed that there are many predictors of the future - Nostrodamus, Vanga, etc. However, if you carefully examine the primary sources, and not the journalistic and literary work, you can see that they did not give specific predictions... Only general words, confusing, vague, vague wording! Such “cunning” predictions can be adjusted to many historical facts. In the Bible, the prophets never spoke like that when they proclaimed prophecies. They clearly predicted what was going to happen!
Satan can calculate the future by knowing the present! And he can tell it to a person by disguising himself as an Angel of God, a saint or a relative from the other world...! But he can't see far ahead!!! For example, Satan knew that Hitler was preparing a war, since he was present at all his councils. Satan knows that a person is sick, for example, with cancer, and can supposedly predict this... And so on...
If you believe that in addition to God, the forces of evil can also predict the unpredictable future, then we must admit that Satan is stronger than God. But the Bible teaches otherwise! If you believe that the devil’s minions crawl into God’s “plans, into his thoughts” for information about the future, then they are stealing - they are getting into the pocket of the Creator of the Universe, and God turns a blind eye to this or does not notice!? But this is not possible, since it contradicts the Bible and the character of God, who warned that only He knows the future and through fulfilled predictions one can recognize His prophets!
I specifically made an introduction about predictions, despite the fact that the question was about the interpretation of dreams. The fact is that the interpretation of dreams, that is, perceiving them as prophetic, and predictions - these topics are connected.
Now, I hope you understand that only the Creator knows the future and only God predicts it through the prophets.
In Holy Scripture, the Creator stated that he appears to the prophets in a dream or vision :
“Hear My words: if there is a prophet of the Lord among you, then I reveal myself to him in a vision, I speak to him in a dream ” (Num. 12:6).
Knowing this, think about your dreams and premonitions!
There are two options:
1) You are a prophet, and God reveals the future to you in dreams.
2) Your dreams and premonitions are only the fruit of the work of the nervous system and brain, which means there is no point in trying to interpret dreams.
God in the Bible said that dreams are prophetic, given by Him (dreams of Pharaoh, the Babylonian king, Joseph...). But there are also simple dreams, of which there are more !
“For the teraphim speak empty things, and the prophets see false things, and tell lying dreams ; they console with emptiness; therefore they wander like sheep, and are in misery, because there is no shepherd” (Zech. 10:2)
“For thus says the Lord of hosts, the God of Israel: Do not let your prophets who are among you and your fortunetellers deceive you; and do not listen to the dreams that you dream ...” (Jer. 29:8)
“For in a multitude of dreams , as in a multitude of words, there is much vanity ” (Eccl. 5:6)
You need to know that the dreams given by God are special. In the Bible, which describes the life of God's people over a period of several thousand years, they were very rare. At the same time, no one could interpret prophetic dreams, but only God’s prophets. Attention(!): God's prophets are not ordinary people, but righteous people who always clearly honor the Law of God - His commandments, broadcasting reproofs, admonitions to the people, dreams and visions from the Creator and teaching people to believe only in the One Living God!
Are you one of these prophets? Compare your life with God's commandments as set out in the Bible! If you do not live according to God’s law, then your dreams and premonitions are vain, which means you don’t need to try to interpret them and pay attention to them. That is, these are your thoughts, experiences, deja vu (read about this material from Wikipedia “Deja vu”). Of course, some dreams may come true in whole or in part, but these options were played out in a dream or in reality by your brain, and this does not mean that you have become a prophet of God, no matter how much you would like to think so.
