History of the icon

The distant year 1146. More than 150 years have passed since the adoption of Christianity by Russia, there are already churches in the cities, Divine services are being performed. But much more difficult than accepting a creed is an internal change in life. It is difficult to become a Christian in more than just name. It’s a hundred times more difficult if you are a prince, which means you find yourself amidst the storms of political life, the struggle of ambitions that even lead to bloodshed. The Church calls rulers who have withstood the terrible test the faithful. And some of them are martyrs. Among them is young Igor Olgovich, a descendant of Prince Yaroslav the Wise.

The Vladimir Icon of the Mother of God is an icon of the Mother of God, the earliest and one of the most revered miraculous icons of the Russian Church.
Igor Olgovich (in baptism - George; in monasticism - Gabriel; in schema - Ignatius; ? - 9 (according to other sources, 19) September 1147) - son of Oleg Svyatoslavich, Prince of Chernigov. Holy Russian Orthodox Church; memory: June 5 (18) (transfer of relics) and September 19 (October 2). A representative of the Olgovich dynasty - a branch of the Rurikovich, descended from Oleg Svyatoslavich. Prince of Novgorod-Seversky (1139-1146), Grand Duke of Kiev (1146).

The margins of the icon board are the frame of the middle, usually deepened part of the icon (ark). It is separated from the ark by a husk, and along the outer edge it is often outlined with a line of contrasting color to the background—the fringe.

The fields of ancient icons are quite narrow; by the 11th-12th centuries. became wider, and the ark became smaller, from the 14th century. Icon boards appear without borders.

Selected saints can traditionally be depicted on the margins of the icon. Not being part of the main composition and not belonging to the sacred space, they play the role of intercessor and mediator in prayer before the icon.

From the 9th century in Byzantium a new form of icons appears - the so-called. “hagiographic icons”: in the middle part a saint is depicted, and in the margins in separate small-sized completed compositions (stamps) there are scenes from the life of this saint. From Byzantium, hagiographic icons came to Italy, the Balkans, Rus' and the Caucasus.

Icon fields are also a traditional place for placing text, sometimes filling the entire field. The understanding of the relationship between the image and the word changes over time, gradually, with the general decline of icon painting, the image is perceived not as an equivalent of the word, but becomes only an illustration of what is written.

Another trend in late (starting from the mid-16th century) icon painting is the gradual understanding of fields as a decorative frame. The fields are decorated with carved gesso, decorative stucco, picturesque ornaments and imitation precious stones, and covered with metal basma.

Prayer

To whom will I call, Lady, to whom will I resort in my sorrow? To whom shall I bring my tears and sighs, if not to You, Queen of Heaven and earth? Who will pluck me from the mire of sins and iniquities, if not You, O Mother of the Belly, Intercessor and Refuge of the human race? Hear my groaning, comfort me and have mercy in my sorrow, protect me in troubles and misfortunes, deliver me from anger and sorrow, illnesses and illnesses and from enemies visible and invisible; pacify the enmity of those who oppress me, so that I will be delivered from slander and human malice; So, free me from my flesh and vile customs. Cover me under the canopy of Your mercy, so that I may find peace and joy and cleansing from sins. I entrust to myself your maternal intercession: be my Mother and hope, protection, and help, and intercession, joy and consolation, and a quick Helper in everything. O wonderful Lady! Everyone, flowing to You, will not leave without Your all-powerful help. For this reason, I, unworthy, am running to You, so that I will be delivered from sudden and cruel death, gnashing of teeth and eternal torment, and I will be honored to receive the Kingdom of Heaven and You in my heart the river of the heart: Rejoice, Mother of God, our zealous Representative and Intercessor, in eyelids of centuries. Amen.

Mother of God Igorevskaya embroidered with beads

The Mother of God Igorevskaya is depicted on an icon of ancient Greek writing. This is a smaller shoulder-length version of another famous image - the Mother of God of Vladimir. In the process of creation, the icon painter followed the ancient tradition and created a smaller version of the image of the revered saint.

“Tenderness” was used as the iconographic style. At first glance, it is noticeable that the Mother of God rested her right cheek on the left cheek of the Child Christ. There is a complete lack of distance between them, which reflects their boundless love.

Through such an image, the sacrifice of Christ the Savior on the cross is transformed, showing what happened as an immeasurable and highest manifestation of God’s love for all people.

Beaded Igor Icon of the Mother of God

Materials used in the embroidery of the icon of the Mother of God of Igor: fabric - metallized satin, faces painted in oil on thin canvas, beads, rhinestones, truntal, gimp, pearls, garnet, coral, malachite, amber, citrine.

Until the beginning of the 20th century, the image of the Igor’s Mother of God remained in the Assumption Cathedral of the Kiev Pechersk Lavra. There he was in the altar located above the altar in the chapel of the first martyr Stephen. By the way, the two earliest copies from the shrine were made in the second half of the 16th century. Both are kept in the State Tretyakov Gallery.

They were made in Moscow and their appearance dates back to the time of Metropolitan Macarius, namely 1542-1563. It was the appearance at this time that ensured such an exact repetition of not only the sizes, but also the iconography used.

The Igorevskaya Icon of the Mother of God appeared due to the sad death of the martyr Igor Olegovich, also known as the Holy Blessed Prince Igor of Chernigov. During his life, two groups of princes fought for the throne of Kiev at once - the Olegovichs and the Mstislavovichs.

Igor's brother, Vsevolod, who literally wrested rule from the hands of his opponents, was unable to fully strengthen the power of Kyiv when he was killed. After this, the entire burden fell on the shoulders of the future saint. At the moment of ascending the throne, the ceremony of kissing the cross took place, which was supposed to emphasize the loyalty of the people of Kyiv to their ruler.

Despite the fact that the ascension to the throne took place according to all the rules, Igor’s supporters immediately sent a messenger to the Mstislavichs, calling enemy troops to the walls of the city. Just two weeks later, a decisive battle took place, which determined the future fate of the Holy Blessed Prince Igor of Chernigov.

Despite the fact that the superiority of forces was not on the side of the ruler of Kyiv, at the decisive moment of the battle the troops loyal to him went over to the enemy’s side. Such a betrayal completely turned the tide of the battle, providing the Mstislavichs with a guaranteed victory.

Captured Igor was put in the log. It was a kind of prison, which was a cold wooden frame with no windows or doors. During the period that the former prince spent inside his prison, he managed to become seriously ill.

The enemies, believing in the imminent death of their captive, cut him out of the woodwork. The Mstislavichs, despite their hostility towards the Olegovichs, allowed the martyr to take on the monastic rank before his death. The newly tonsured George, despite all the forecasts, recovered, after which he accepted the schema, taking the name Ignatius.

After this, the former prince of Kiev indulged in Ionic exploits. He spent time crying over his sins, praying for redemption. Meanwhile, his half-blood relatives joined the fight for the lost throne.

Most likely, it was these events that caused the imminent death of Ignatius. The troops of Svyatoslav Olegovich were already approaching the city when the people of Kiev, who harbored hatred for all Olegovichs, burst into the monastery. According to history, the monk prince was not only killed, but his cold body was dragged through the streets all day.

On that day, Ignatius, in the last hours of his life, prayed before the cell icon of the Mother of God of Igor. It is for this reason that she later received the name Mother of God of Igor and began to be revered as miraculous, helping people exposed to sorrows and persecution.

Disappearance of the Igor Icon of the Mother of God

The modern history of the image of the Igor's Mother of God is much more vague. Until the twentieth century, it was kept in the Assumption Cathedral of the Kiev-Pechersk Lavra. But during the Patriotic War, the entire cathedral was destroyed, and the image of the Mother of God Igorevskaya disappeared without a trace.

Although, many historians are inclined to believe that her disappearance occurred earlier, during the establishment of Soviet power and the fight against religion. In any case, only reproductions taken in the 1500s and stored in Russia have survived to this day.

The life and death of Prince Igor

One might say, Igor was sucked into the whirlpool of political struggle. In any case, there is no information about his own power ambitions. He was simply the brother of Prince Vsevolod, who fought for decades for the grand-ducal Kiev table with his relatives - the grandchildren of Vladimir Monomakh. The politician achieved his goals, but more than once he had to fight wars and defend power. Amid these unrest, the prince died, and appointed his younger brother as his heir.

Judging by a few sources, Igor turned out to be a fair ruler: he promised the people of Kiev to punish those close to the late Vsevolod who offended the townspeople. But he also did not allow the townspeople themselves to rebel, loot, or plunder rich households. Perhaps this did not suit the willful residents. Less than a month had passed since they, secretly from the prince, called his rivals to the throne.

Then - a bloody slaughter, defeat, captivity of Igor, who was imprisoned in a “cut” - a wooden tower without doors or windows. It was possible to free a person from such a prison only by “knocking him out”, in other words, by breaking through the wall with an ax. Here the prince languished for several months - and all this time the brothers continued their civil strife, figuring out who should sit on the Kiev table.

Finally, Igor fell ill and felt death approaching. He managed to persuade the brothers to allow him to become a monk. Barely alive, he was taken out of the “cut,” confident that death would follow his tonsure.

But the new monk Gabriel recovered. It immediately turned out that he accepted monasticism not “out of fear for the sake of mortals,” but out of conviction in the vanity of the world, and unwillingness to participate in civil strife that kills soul and body. But they didn’t believe him.

Brother Izyaslav, who was already sitting on the Kiev table, assigned guards to Gabriel, and allowed him to live in the monastery of Theodore Stratilates, his ancestral monastery. Here Gabriel took the schema with the name Ignatius. From here he was taken to death by decision of the city council.

Some say that enraged murderers broke into the ascetic’s cell, others say that they went straight into the temple during the liturgy. But we know for sure: the schemamonk performed his last prayers in front of the image of the Mother of God. She was torn from her by the bursting killers.

The chronicle tells that his brother, Vladimir, tried to save the former prince: “Vladimir jumped off his horse, wanting to help him, and covered him with a basket (prince’s cloak) and said to the people of Kiev: “Don’t kill, brothers.” And Vladimir led Igor to his mother’s yard, and they began to beat Vladimir.”

Following this, Schemamonk Ignatius was also beaten to death.

When the townspeople came to their senses after the murder, this icon was found. She was named Igorevskaya - after the secular, not monastic name of the former prince.

Description of the Igor Icon

Icon painters believe that the prototype for painting the icon was another shrine - the so-called Mother of God “Tenderness”. The period of writing probably dates back to the turn of the 11th and 12th centuries. The most famous image in this style is Our Lady of Vladimir.

In the image, the baby is sitting in the arms of the Virgin Mary. He affectionately clung to her cheek and hugged her neck with one hand. The expression on the face of the Son of God is serious and adult. And the face of the Mother of God is filled with immeasurable sadness, because she knows about the Lord’s providence regarding Jesus.

Icon of the Most Holy Theotokos “Igorevskaya”

Despite the similarity with the Vladimir Mother of God, Igorevskaya has some peculiarities.

  • the eyes of the Mother of God do not look at those standing in front of her, her state is more reminiscent of contemplative-praying;
  • the second obvious distinctive feature is that the left hand of Jesus, with which he embraces the Mother under the cape on the prototype, is not depicted on the Igor icon.

The image was decorated with a gilded silver chasuble with ornaments. There is an engraved inscription on it with the history of the shrine’s ownership by Prince Igor.

Important! Even a person far from religion and faith will not remain indifferent after looking at this ancient icon

Igor's Icon of the Mother of God - the history of the shrine

Among Orthodox shrines there are many icons associated with specific people, personalities who left one or another mark on the history or spiritual life of people. These are Alexander Nevsky, Matrona of Moscow, Boris and Gleb and many, many others.

Why is the icon of the Mother of God Igorevskaya?

The Igorevskaya Icon of the Mother of God goes back to another holy image - “Our Lady of Tenderness”, the date of creation of which dates back to approximately the end of the 14th - beginning of the 15th century. It is a version of Vladimirskaya, her “shoulder-shaped” image. During its existence, many copies were copied from the image. This suggests that the Igor Icon of the Mother of God is still highly respected and is a true symbol of the Faith. Currently, the location of one of the main copies is the Kiev Lavra of the Assumption Cathedral in Moscow. And it was named Igor’s because in the most difficult moments of his life, the victim of the bloody internecine war that tore the ancient Russian land apart, young Igor, the prince of Kiev and Chernigov, the great-grandson of the great Yaroslav the Wise, prayed before her.

He suffered a tragic, bitter, but also glorious fate, like many Christian great martyrs. The chronicles say about the prince, in whose honor the Igor Icon of the Mother of God was named, that he was a brave warrior and a good hunter. The main thing is that he excelled in faith and learning, was a great lover of books, read a lot of the spiritual literature that existed at that time, and from his youth spent most of his time in prayer, thinking about God, and talking with monks and holy elders. When, according to his will, he had to assume the throne in Kyiv after the death of his brother, Igor was already close to leaving worldly life.

When, during his arrest and being “locked up” in a cold hut, the prince became mortally ill, and then, while in the monastery and becoming a monk, he recovered, he decided that this was a sign and that the rest of his life should be connected with the Lord. But Providence decreed otherwise. The Igor Icon of the Mother of God is the very image in front of which the prince raised his prayers to Heaven.

Monasticism did not save the prince from a terrible, tragic death - he was beaten to death by an angry crowd. Moreover, even his corpse, innocently killed, was subjected to desecration and ridicule. He became a victim of that very riot of the crowd, senseless and merciless, about which Pushkin later warned. In memory of this suffering death, the Igor Icon was named. It is written in the Greek style, covered with silver plating. And the inscription on the image directly indicates who it once belonged to. The Prince's Memorial Day is celebrated annually on June 5 (18) with solemn prayers and services.

Most of all, the Igor Icon of the Mother of God is revered by deeply unhappy people. Prayer, or rather prayers to it, are especially powerful if a person is in a difficult situation, in danger or sorrow. Serious health problems are successfully resolved, healing comes to people. Family members separated for a long time by violent quarrels or everyday circumstances are reconciled.

What does this story teach? That we should always maintain faith in goodness, truth and justice, and according to our faith we will be rewarded!

The Queen of All conquers illness and witchcraft

People's love for the image of the All-Tsarina is growing, and the number of temples in Her honor is increasing. Cancer and tumor diseases, frightening in their suddenness and mercilessness, recede before the prayer of the Mother of God, which She offers for the whole world. People who were previously unbelievers flock to Her miraculous images and receive relief. With the cessation of the development of the disease, faith and strength to perform spiritual deeds appear.

Healthy. People also turn to the Mother of God of All Queens for protection from witchcraft. Possessing insufficient faith, some people are afraid of the actions of sorcerers, witches, etc., thinking that they are capable of causing harm.

The Mother of God more than once destroyed the machinations of sorcerers, showing how weak they were before the power of God. By praying to the “Tsarina of All,” any Christian becomes terrible for demons and no evil forces can approach him.

In the Kazan Church in Rostov-on-Don, the icon around the Mother of God depicts the Hieromartyr Cyprian and the Martyr Justinia - saints defeating demonic intrigues.

The first miracle from the icon that arrived in Russia was the healing of an unbelieving young man from drug addiction. The unfortunate man lost his mind and behaved aggressively. His mother prayed for him before the All-Tsaritsa, ordered a prayer service and brought home holy water. Surprisingly, instead of the usual screaming and cursing, the guy asked for holy water and drank it all. After that, his mood changed, he began to be treated by a narcologist and got a job. Now the former drug addict thanks the Mother of God and helps others get rid of addiction.

Igorevskaya Icon of the Mother of God. Holy image of Greek letter

The ancient icon of the Mother of God “Igorevskaya” has an interesting and tragic history. After the sad historical events in 1147, this icon began to be called Igorevskaya. This name was given in honor of the holy Prince Igor, who was innocently killed due to an internecine war.

We advise you to study the Icon “The Crucifixion of Jesus Christ”

History of the icon of the holy prince

Prince Igor, a descendant of the Olegovich family, after the death of his brother Vsevolod, began to rule Kiev. But the prince reigned there for only a couple of weeks. Since the boyars from Kyiv turned to Igor’s enemies to overthrow him from the Kyiv throne.

The Mstislavichs responded to the call of the boyars and marched with an army against Prince Igor. Igor lost the battle; he was betrayed by his own soldiers. And Igor was forced to flee. He hid in the swamps. And Izyaslav Mstislavich ordered to find the fleeing prince.

And when the search was crowned with success, Igor was put in a cold cellar under guard.

In his icy prison, Prince Igor fell ill. Anticipating his imminent death, the invaders relented and decided to send the prince to the Feodorovsky Monastery to tonsure Igor into the schema. But by God’s will, Igor recovered. And he remained to serve as a monk in this famous and notorious monastery.

Prince Igor prayed tirelessly at the monastery and cried a lot. Almost a year later, the Kiev mob rebelled and decided to deal with the representative of the princely family.

The entire clergy of the monastery tried to restrain the anger of the crowd, and even Igor’s main enemy Izyaslav stood up for him, but the people went crazy. The mob broke into the church right during the liturgy in the middle of the service.

The brutal people attacked the prince, who was praying in front of the icon of the Mother of God, and dragged him out of the temple to be punished. This is how Saint Prince Igor died as a martyr.

And the icon of the Mother of God, before which the prince knelt in his moments before his death, was designated as Igorevskaya. After this incident, the icon became miraculous.

And it was placed in the Assumption Cathedral at the Kiev Pechersk Lavra. It could be seen in the border of the Holy Apostle John the Theologian. During the total occupation of Kyiv in 1941, the holy image was stolen.

And nothing is still known about his fate.

Igor's icon. Iconography and other information

The “Igorevskaya” icon of the Mother of God, lost and reproduced again, belongs to the “Tenderness” iconographic type. Lists (reconstructions) of the icon were made at the request of the church more than once. Publications about the Kiev Pechersk Lavra were used as a source. The earliest recreated icons date back to the 16th century. And both of them are in the Tretyakov Gallery.

The icon is celebrated on June 18. This holiday coincides with the transfer of the relics of St. Igor from Kyiv to the cathedral in Chernigov. The relics of Prince Igor from the Olegovich family were transported in 1150.

What do they pray for in front of a consecrated reproduction of an icon?

Before this icon, Christians ask for the following:

  • intercession during persecution;
  • deliverance from sorrow and despondency;
  • help in a desperate situation;
  • healing and restoration of strength.

The icon depicts the Mother of God with a baby clinging to her. This is interpreted as a direct connection between the divine and the earthly. The Orthodox Church especially reveres this face. This icon also arouses considerable interest among historians and researchers.

This holy image, by the will of the Savior, can help a person in various difficult situations. Especially where the believer is insulted, humiliated, harassed and denigrated. People in trouble seek their salvation in prayer in front of such an icon. It is believed that the power of the holy image can help even where the situation seems hopeless and dead-end.

The rare Igorevskaya Icon of the Mother of God is a church relic and a work of art. There is an opinion that the Igor Icon is a shoulder-length version of the similar Vladimir Icon. Researchers see differences in the look of the Mother of God, as well as in the absence of the baby’s left hand in the field of view in the Igorevsky version.

In general, these two icons are quite similar. They also have similar interpretations. Only the Igor’s holy image is considered less widespread than the Vladimir’s image. It is worth remembering that prayer in front of an icon helps those who sincerely believe.

It depends on the strength of a person’s faith whether he will receive the help he asks for or whether he will have to solve problems on his own.

According to some sources, on this day the icon, along with the relics of Schemamonk Ignatius, was transferred from Kyiv to Chernigov. She stayed here for some time and met the invasion of the Mongols.

The further history of the shrine is unclear, but by the beginning of the 20th century. her place of residence was the Assumption Church of the Kiev Pechersk Lavra.

In the early 1900s. a copy was made from the image. This was done by the artist A. Shinkarenko. It is from this copy that we can judge the icon now: after the revolution, the prototype was lost.
