Temple of the Icon of the Mother of God “Burning Bush” in Bryansk
built in 2013 in the traditions of Novgorod architecture. Due to the fact that in Soviet times there were many military graves at this place, the monument church was erected high, reminiscent in shape of a soldier, and the dome is shaped like a helmet.
History[edit]
The Church of the Icon of the Mother of God “Burning Bush” in Bryansk was founded in 1996, but the history of the appearance of this temple is more ancient.
Once upon a time, in the local forests, the local bishop Mitrofan, who founded the monastery of the Savior Not Made by Hands, hid from persecution. In the 18th century, a city cemetery was opened nearby, and the temple became a cemetery. When the temple became old, a local merchant - a parishioner of the Tikhvin Church, in 1776-79 - built a new one instead. In 1779, a bell tower was also erected.
After the canonization of St. Mitrophan of Voronezh in 1832, the temple was renamed in honor of this saint. Almost a century later, in 1929, the Bolsheviks closed the Mitrofan Church, and in 1930 they destroyed it.
The foundation stone of the temple took place on September 17, 1996. On this day, believers honor the image of the “Burning Bush”, and the city celebrates liberation from the Nazi invaders, therefore the temple complex itself was conceived as a monument to the fallen military.
The first service in the new church was celebrated in 2013, and the first bishop's service in 2015.
Various opposition political movements opposed the construction, organizing rallies
Rallies against the construction were carried out by activists of the political left, the right, and those for whom the protest was just for the sake of protest. Vladimir Garnachuk, deputy of the municipal assembly of the Troparevo-Nikulino district, expressed his disagreement with the construction of the temple.
He led about thirty atheists to the worship cross, who began shouting threats against Archpriest Alexander and the parishioners.
Details of the incident are on the website hram-troicy.prihod.ru.
However, when supporters and parishioners began to gather, and there were many more of them, the militant atheists seemed to dissolve. And Mr. Deputy could only threaten the supporters with collecting signatures of dissenting residents from the surrounding houses.
Despite the protests, the church was included in the “200 churches” program.
Oh, fighting to preserve the environment, parks and forests.
But a temple is not an industrial facility, nor an entertainment establishment; moreover, it is not only spiritual, but also beautiful. Often, protest events were not even coordinated with the district administration, and local residents had to call the police when they shouted “down with them.”
Holy Face Day
It is believed that the thorn bush, which became a guide for the Lord God, should be venerated on September 17, according to the old style - on the 4th of the same month.
On the holiday, according to ancient custom, it was worth going around the house with an image in your hands. If there was no such icon in the house, then a white dove should have been released into the home. A bird of this color protected the house and the people living in it from fire. Later they advised to put a candle in front of the image, and if a fire started, then prayer in front of the image helped to stop it.
History of the icon of the Mother of God
Initially, the image of the Mother of God was painted in a burning thorn bush, before which Moses knelt. Afterwards other images appeared. It is believed that the Burning Bush is one of the most ancient icons; many stories are associated with it, but it is enough to tell one to be convinced of the miraculous power of the image. The 18th century turned out to be difficult for Russia; the number of fires and arson increased sharply, which was associated with the material from which buildings were built. Cities were burning, and the fire could not be stopped.
In 1822, one parishioner had a dream; she saw the Mother of God in it, who told her that in order to stop the elements, she needed to paint a miraculous image. The woman immediately went to church and told the archpriest about her dream. He gave the order. When the icon was painted, the fires stopped, and soon the culprits were exposed.
Now this image is in the Slavic Church of the Trinity, and on the ark, which was built by the parishioners, there is a memorable inscription: “In memory of 1822 for saving the city from fire.”
There is another story that tells about the torment of the human soul, but it is connected with a holy image. During the war with Napoleon, one of the soldiers decided to steal an icon brought from Palestine to our country. The attacker managed to carry out his plan, but after the theft the man fell into indescribable melancholy, which forced him to return the image and confess his sins.
Nikolskoye. Temple in honor of the icon of the Mother of God “Burning Bush”

Count Alexei Grigorievich Orlov-Chesmensky did not receive a good education and upbringing, he did not know foreign languages, and his bad manners shocked the ladies of the court. Despite this, he was interested in science, patronized Lomonosov and Fonvizin, and also corresponded with Rousseau. This is important when a person throughout his life tries to “get” what he did not get in childhood and adolescence. And he arranges the childhood of his heirs completely differently.
The count's daughter, Anna Alekseevna, was a deeply religious and pious woman. With her funds, 14 churches were built in the Samara province. The temple in honor of the Burning Bush icon of the Mother of God in Nikolskoye - a little more than 80 kilometers from Samara - was opened in 1831. The old-timers of the village tell about it this way: “the church was golden-domed, snow-white, the bell was ringing. Beautiful, wide staircase. The temple fence generally amazed with its magnificence: openwork interlacing, and above each span of the fence there were crystal balls that shimmered in the sun. The entire temple was buried in beautiful flowers and fruit trees. From the inside the temple looked no worse. All the walls are painted with frescoes, a beautiful iconostasis, richly decorated royal doors. And our singers were the best in the area.”
On Mount Sinai there is a custom of singing the service before the icon of the Mother of God “The Burning Bush” during a strong thunderstorm, “when lightning is terrible.” According to popular belief, this icon saves the houses of those who venerate it from fire and lightning.
The temple had three altars in one altar. The main altar in honor of the icon of the Most Holy Theotokos “The Burning Bush” and the side altar in honor of St. Nicholas the Wonderworker were consecrated in 1832 by Archbishop Anatoly of Simbirsk. And a year later, Samara Archpriest John Tsvetkov consecrated the second side (northern) throne in honor of the Great Martyr George the Victorious.
For a hundred years people prayed in the temple consecrated in honor of the Burning Bush icon of the Mother of God.
In 1931, the temple was closed and was used as a grain warehouse, workshops and even a gas station. In recent years, its premises have fallen into complete disrepair and partially collapsed. All that remains of the temple are the dilapidated walls. In 2006, Archbishop Sergius of Samara and Syzran decided to restore it. In the meantime, the situation is such that services are held in a temporary church.
But, as you know, despondency is a sin. The parish is alive. The temple is even included in the list of protected architectural monuments and there is well-founded hope for its reconstruction and restoration.
If tomorrow, during morning prayers, you remember this story, pray for the speedy revival of the temple in honor of the Burning Bush Icon of the Mother of God in Nikolskoye.
Examples of miracles
Some of the miracles that the Mother of God is capable of have already been mentioned earlier, but there are others that are worth telling the general public about. Dimitri Koloshin, who was the Tsar's groom, was once convicted on false charges. He pleaded for justice, asking for protection. The Mother of God heard the prayers of the innocent, she appeared in a dream to the head of state and told about the groom’s non-involvement in the atrocities.
The king decided to check all the arguments and delve into the study of documents. The investigation revealed that the groom was not involved and the charges against him were fabricated. The man was acquitted, after which he built a church in memory of the Burning Bush, which saved his life
In the Middle Ages, when wooden buildings in Moscow burned almost every day, believers prayed and believed that the image would save them from the elements. They placed the icon in a prominent place, and before moving into the house, they walked around it with the miraculous image in their hands. The icon from Palestine was brought to Moscow in 1390, and ever since then one can find references to the fact that the image works miracles for which there is no scientific explanation.
How to properly place it in the house
It is worth positioning the icon correctly, so that the Mother of God sees everyone who enters the house and all family members. So, where to hang the icon, or the location of the shrine in the home:
- There are no strict restrictions on the location of the icon; it can be placed anywhere, at the discretion of the believer.
- But there is a belief that if you place the face above the front door, it will be better. The icon will be able to protect the family and maintain well-being in the home.
The face is placed high above the doorway, maybe a little lower, but so that the Mother of God can see all family members, as well as guests who enter the house.
Iconography
If you study an icon, its distinctive feature is considered to be the presence of several symbols that add up to the overall picture and form the face.
In the center they depict the Virgin Mary with a child, the rest of the image is made up of rhombuses, the edges of which form that same eight-pointed star. It is noteworthy that even the color of the diamonds is symbolic. So, red symbolizes fire, and blue or green symbolizes the foot of the mountain where Moses saw a vision and where he talked with the Lord.
The icon, in general, symbolizes the conversation between the prophet and God, which took place on various topics. It is believed that with the help of a thorn bush that did not burn, Christ told Moses its purpose. He told how to free the people, and what sacrifices would have to be made for the sake of freedom. The end of the conversation was a request to depict a miraculous image on canvas, in which a woman would hold a baby in her arms. The icon is unique in that it contains several images of the Virgin Mary, in different variations, and not just one, as usual.

Church of the Burning Bush Icon of the Mother of God - Dyatkovo
Burning Bush Temple
Iconostasis of the Temple in honor of the Burning Bush Icon of the Mother of God.
Having started the construction of a crystal iconostasis, the residents of Dyatkovo decided to bring all the accompanying decoration of the temple as close as possible to Maltsov’s times. For example, they installed his crystal chandelier here under the dome, simply a chandelier. The administration of the crystal factory met halfway and donated a chandelier from the enterprise's House of Culture to the temple. Huge in size, more than four meters in diameter, it did not fit into the dimensions of the church. The problem was solved by designer Leonid Chizhov.
Not far away, where Lenin Street makes a turn, is the Church of the Burning Bush.
The only church in the world with an iconostasis made entirely of crystal was built in 1810 by local industrialist I.A. Maltsov. In March 1929 it was destroyed and the iconostasis was destroyed. Over the next few years, the church was completely destroyed. Miraculously, only a human-sized crystal candlestick and a small crystal plate from the altar were preserved. Construction of a new church began in 2000 and was completed in 2003. The restorers tried to exactly repeat the work of the old masters. When developing sketches of the iconostasis, surviving drawings from 200 years ago were used. It took the glassblowers and foundry workers of the Dyatkovo plant more than a year to produce several thousand parts. More than 8 tons of crystal were spent on restoring the iconostasis. The church was consecrated in March 2003.
Temple-monument Burning Bush. The temple is located in the town of Dyatkovo, Bryansk region and has the only unique crystal iconostasis in the world, made by the masters of the Dyatkovo Crystal Factory.
This is an unusual temple, because it has the only crystal iconostasis in Russia (and maybe in the world?)! A church with a crystal iconostasis existed in the village of Dyatkovo back in the 19th century, but it has not survived to this day. And this temple was built in 2003. And, of course, the iconostasis is the work of local Dyatkovo crystal makers.
A landmark of Dyatkovo in the 19th century. there was the Transfiguration Church, built in 1848 by the founders of the plant, the Maltsovs. Because of its interior decoration, made by the masters of the crystal factory, the white stone “pearl” was sometimes called the eighth wonder of the world. In the 20s of the last century, the church was completely destroyed.
But in March 2003, the newly built Church of the Burning Bush was consecrated (project authors E.I. Volnova and L.A. Chizhov). The crystal decoration of the temple consists of several thousand parts. It is decorated with the only crystal iconostasis in Russia (perhaps in the world), made by the hands of local artists. Several tons of crystal were used to make it. Today the iconostasis is the pride of not only the Bryansk region, but also the whole of Russia. After all, the Burning Bush icon is the protector of firefighters and all soldiers of the Fatherland.
The temple-monument in honor of the icon of the Mother of God “The Burning Bush” was built with the blessing of the Archbishop of Bryansk and Sevsk Melchizedek. In December 1999, the ceremony of consecration and laying of the stone was performed. Construction was carried out with the support of the Governor of the Bryansk region Yu.E. Lodkin, administration of the city of Dyatkovo and Dyatkovo district. In March 2003, Bishop Theophylact of Bryansk and Sevsk consecrated the temple.
Last Sunday in the city of DYATKOVO it was very solemn - the consecration and opening of the WORSHIP CRYSTAL CROSS took place near the Temple-monument in honor of the icon of the Mother of God “BURNING BURCH”.
The world-famous landmark of Dyatkovo in the 19th century was the Church of the Transfiguration, built in 1810 by the founders of the plant, the Maltsovs. For the interior decoration made by the masters of the Dyatkovo crystal factory - the crystal iconostasis, crystal chandeliers and chandeliers, unique laminated glass candlesticks, very often the white stone “pearl” was called the “eighth wonder of the world.”
Church
Where is the holy image located?
In the Church of St. Catherine, which was built near a popular resort location (Egypt, Sharm el-Sheikh), there is the same bush that burned, but did not burn down. An altar was built around the plant, so that the plant was visible to parishioners. The chapel still functions today, and before air traffic with Egypt was closed, tourists could get to the holy place by bus.
Attempts to cultivate the holy plant were unsuccessful. The roots never sprouted. In any church in Russia you can find an image of the Burning Bush, but in the Annunciation Cathedral of the Moscow Kremlin you can see a wonderful icon, which was brought from Palestine to Moscow. In the church called the Burning Bush, which is located in Sosnovy Bor, Leningrad region, there is also an icon of the same name. There is also a face in the Cathedral of St. Peter and Paul in the Urals.
The temple will be built for charity
The construction is financed by the Forty Sorokov Charitable Foundation.
