Saints

The holy martyr Matrona of Thessalonica (III or IV century) was the slave of the Jewish woman Pautila, the wife of one of the military leaders. Pautila forced her slave to apostatize and convert to Judaism, but Matrona believed in Christ even more firmly. Once, when asked by Pautila why she did not go to the synagogue, but to the Christian church, Matrona replied: “Because God is present in the Christian church, but he has retreated from the synagogue.” Pautila, in a rage, beat the slave, and then tied her up and locked her in a dark closet. In the morning she discovered that Matrona, by an unknown force, had been freed from her bonds. In anger, Pautila beat the martyr almost to death, then tied her even tighter and imprisoned her in the same closet. For four days the martyr remained without water and food, and when Pautila opened the door, she again saw Matrona freed from her bonds and standing in prayer. In a terrible rage, Pautila beat the martyr with thick sticks, after which the saint gave up her spirit to God. Her body was thrown from the city wall. Christians raised him and buried him. Soon after, at the place where Matrona’s body was thrown from the high wall, Pautila stumbled, fell and broke, receiving well-deserved retribution.

Matrona of Moscow

In 1885, in the village of Sebino near Tula, a girl was born into a poor peasant family. Already elderly Dmitry and Natalya, who lived in extreme poverty, even before the birth of the fourth child in the family, agreed to give him to the shelter of Prince Golitsyn. Moreover, the shelter was close, in a neighboring village. But they perceived the birth of a blind girl as a gift from God. And the “unfortunate child,” as the mother often called the girl, remained in the family. The girl was baptized with the name Matrona, in honor of the Greek ascetic Matrona of Constantinople, whose memory is celebrated on November 22 (November 9, old style). Even at the baptism, the priest uttered a phrase that was mysterious to the parents, that the baby would be holy and would take his place. The parents quickly appreciated the significance and meaning of the priest’s words. The girl was distinguished by her piety from an early age. She was in constant prayer. Near her house there was the Church of the Dormition of the Mother of God, where Matrona traveled independently and stood motionless for long services, singing along with the choir. She was barely six or seven years old when people began to notice that she had the gift of providence and healing. One day she suddenly told her parents that the priest who baptized her had just died. This was confirmed. And then she announced that she would soon “have a wedding,” and literally the next day people began to flock to the village, asking Matrona to pray for the healing of her relatives. She predicted future troubles that affected both private life and the whole country. Once she told her mother that there would soon be a terrible fire in the village, “but your house will not burn down.” And when the mother would throw up her hands sadly and exclaim: “Oh, you’re my unfortunate one,” Matrona answered her: “It’s not I who’s unhappy with you, but Misha and Vanya.” She seemed to know that soon both brothers would be involved in revolutionary activities, join the party and renounce Christ. Another time, Saint Matrona warned of the coming of a time when “churches will be destroyed, the land will be plundered, and the people will be driven out.”

Despite her parents' fears, Matrona was never a burden to the family; on the contrary, grateful people who were healed through her prayers brought gifts to the Nikonovs' house.

The village of Sebino belonged to the landowner Yankov, who had a daughter, Lydia. Having gone on a great pilgrimage to the holy places of Russia, the girl took fourteen-year-old Matrona with her. Trinity-Sergeev Lavra, Kiev-Pechersk Lavra, St. Petersburg shrines - this is an incomplete list of places where Matrona visited. They say that Matrona came to Kronstadt together with Lydia Yankova. The Liturgy at St. Andrew's Monastery came to an end when Father John, asking the crowd to part, extended his hands to Matrona with the words: “Matronushka, come here. Here comes my shift – the eighth pillar of Russia.”

At nineteen, Matrona’s legs completely gave out and for the next fifty years she just sat. However, wherever she was, wherever she moved, the mass of people poured towards her in a stream. She helped some to regain their health, to others she gave advice that resolved life’s conflicts and everyday needs, to others she helped with prayer, calmed and reassured some, warned others and called on everyone to hold on to the faith, humble themselves, endure, repent and seek salvation from God. . People did not stop coming to her, seeing her strong faith and Christian humility in the face of the hardships that she herself experienced. People were also responsive to her own requests, as if they considered them a kind of blessing. So one day she asked to bring a book from the Yankov manor house, indicating on which shelf and in which row it stood. And also start collecting money to paint the icon “Recovery of the Lost,” which was depicted in this book. “The Mother of God asks us to come to church,” said Saint Matrona. The money was quickly collected, the icon was painted, and soon the image of “Seeking the Lost,” in which many miracles occurred, became the main shrine of the village.

In 1925, Matrona moved to Moscow and until the end of her days she wandered around apartments, houses, corners, in which she often lived with kind people, but even more often with those who treated her with hostility and even hatred. The blessed one more than once saved the people who sheltered her from arrest. Ulyanovskaya street, Pyatnitskaya, plywood shack in Sokolniki, Tsaritsyno, Veshnyakovsky lane. She changed dozens of addresses, but day after day the picture of her modest life was repeated: meetings and conversations during the day, prayer and a short sleep at night. In 1939, Saint Matrona predicted war. In a conversation with one woman she said: “... There will be no vacations for a long time, there will be a war, victory will be ours...”. When the wave began, a new wave of visitors poured into Blessed Matrona. People came to her to find out whether to wait for her husband, son, brother to return home or to go to the funeral service. She prayed with people and strengthened them in sorrow and faith. “How sorry I am for you, you will live to see the last times. After all, life will be even worse. Heavy. The time will come when they will put a cross and bread in front of you, and they will say - choose!”

Three days before her death, Saint Matrona asked her loved ones to have her funeral service held in the Church of the Deposition of the Robe on Donskaya Street. Father Nikolai Golubtsov, dear to her heart, served in this church. And she asked to be buried at the Danilovsky cemetery “to listen to the service.” On May 2, 1952, Saint Matrona died. Shortly before her death, she predicted that she would be forgotten soon after her death, “but times will come when people will find out about me and will go in droves for help in their sorrows and with requests to pray to the Lord God, and I will help everyone.”

Exactly fifteen years ago, on May 2, 1999, Matrona Nikonova was canonized as a locally revered Moscow saint. Five years later, in 2004, by decision of the Council of Bishops, the church-wide canonization of Blessed Matrona of Moscow took place.
