Have you ever looked at a world map? Of course, everyone went to school. Did you know that every country, every state has its own map of the world, very different from ours? Look, for example, at a map prepared in Australia or Japan, and you will see that from the point of view of the Australians or the Japanese, you and I occupy a very peripheral place in the world. Everyone who creates a map of the world, who has received the right to do so, puts himself at the center of the world. There was a time when the city of Jerusalem was placed in the very center of the world map. And no one argued with this.
Nowadays in the State of Israel, no more than 2% of the population is Christian, of which a very small part is Orthodox. Three quarters of the residents are Jews, the rest are Muslims or non-religious people. Try to start a sermon about Christ, and you will see how difficult it is in Israel.
However, despite all the obstacles and barriers, even today Jews, as well as Muslims, turn to Christ. They often get baptized at night, secretly from their relatives, fearing to publicly demonstrate their new faith. Here's a story that happened quite recently.
In 2013, an elderly rabbi was looking for a nanny for his little grandson. The rabbi himself came from Baltic Jews and moved to Israel with his family as soon as favorable circumstances arose. It so happened that an offer to become a nanny came to the Orthodox Christian Natalya.
She happily agreed: this gave her the opportunity to go to Jerusalem, where Natalya had never been, to come into contact with holy places, and at the same time provide herself with the funds necessary for the pilgrimage. She traveled without setting any missionary goals for herself. And was it even possible to think about converting someone to Orthodoxy, especially in a country with fairly strict traditions and laws. Natalia wanted to become closer to the Lord in the Holy Land.
Before the trip, she asked for a blessing from her confessor, Archimandrite of the Pochaev Lavra. He blessed, only at the same time he told her to stock up on Epiphany water, take with her a lot of prosphora, holy oil, including from St. Nektarios of Aegina, a miraculous helper for cancer. Such unexpected advice caused bewilderment; it was necessary to fill a whole baggage with shrines. Usually the shrines are transported in the opposite direction - from Jerusalem to Russia. But Natalya, in the simplicity of her heart, did what was said, and thus went to the Holy Land in spiritual armor.
With shrines to Jerusalem? But Natalia listened to her confessor and took with her prosphora and oil from St. Nektarios of Aegina
A flight across two seas, about four hours of travel, and the Promised Land opens before your eyes. Biblical places, shrines dear to the heart of a Christian, and the first of the Christian churches - the Church of the Resurrection, the sacred place where the Lord died on the cross, was laid lifeless in the tomb, and on the third day was resurrected - all this is surprisingly dear and close, even if before you've never been here.
However, Natalia’s stay in Israel was not exactly a pilgrimage. She was going to work in the family of a rabbi. One can imagine how many people would condemn her for such a decision. The rabbi was incredibly lucky: the nanny turned out to be extremely caring, she liked to work with the child, sparing no effort. In her free hours, Natalya visited holy places.
Over time, the urgent need for a nanny disappeared. Natalya was thanked. We paid. But she herself became so attached in her soul to the Holy Land that she did not want to leave. She remained a laborer in one of the monasteries, performed obediences, attended divine services, and literally spent days and nights at holy places. Her soul simply soared. It seemed that now the main thing for which she had come had been found. But the Lord sometimes arranges the most unexpected turns in our path.
And then one day the same rabbi called Natalya and made a new request. It turned out that his wife Tabitha was diagnosed with cancer, and an extremely severe form. To put it bluntly, the disease was hopeless. In any family, such news is like a bolt from the blue. Tabitha experienced enormous suffering and needed help and care. After turning over his acquaintances in his mind, the rabbi quickly realized that he could not find anyone better than Natalya as an uncomplaining and patient nurse. And the humble Christian nurse, of course, agreed. We cannot imagine how many times the Christian faith has triumphed through simple patience, humility and a generous attitude towards others.
Tabitha's condition worsened every day. Natalya began her duties without delay, like a sentry called to guard. Now, instead of praying at the Holy Sepulcher and on the Mount of Olives, she spent days and nights in the room of the suffering Jewish woman Tabitha. But I must say, she prayed as fervently as if she had been at the Holy Sepulcher or on the Mount of Olives.
Meanwhile, the rabbi was looking for human remedies and took his wife, accompanied by her faithful nurse, to Tel Aviv. Naturally, to the best clinic that could be there.
Yes, a lot of praise is poured into Israeli medicine; suffering people are brought here from all over the world, hoping through human efforts to change the condition of the hopeless. I’ll let you in on a secret: Israeli doctors are not omnipotent either. And ultimately, the life and health of people are in God’s hands. In purely human terms, Tabitha’s illness turned out to be so advanced that she was politely refused surgery and therapy. They were sent home to basically die. Grieving for his wife and not knowing what to do, the rabbi placed her in one of the Jerusalem hospitals not far from the walls of the old city. The domes of Orthodox churches looked joyfully through the window of the chamber.
The great is often hidden under the cover of something simple and artless. Many significant events in life take place in an everyday environment, so that a person does not have time to track how decisive changes occur to him. Tabitha continued to suffer. And Natalya, trying to support and console the suffering woman, dared to take a very bold step - she decided to read the Gospel to the Jewish woman. This desire arose somehow by itself. Natalya did not know how the Jewish woman would react to this, but she also did not know what else to offer to alleviate her condition. Out of simplicity and sincere faith, she wanted to share what was most dear to her and turned to the Gospel as a source of personal spiritual consolation.
As it should be, I began with the Gospel of Matthew with its listing of the genealogy from Abraham to Christ, which, in fact, from ancient times served as confirmation for the Jews of the Messianic ministry of the Savior. The birth of Christ from the Virgin, the Baptism of John, the three temptations, the beatitudes... So simply the Gospel entered the life of an elderly Jewish woman. Tabitha listened more and more. She was silent for a long time. And then she unexpectedly said that she had heard this text a long time ago. It turned out that in distant childhood, someone read the Gospel to her, then a little girl. She herself did not remember who dared to read the texts forbidden to the Jews, but most importantly, she remembered these wonderful lines, although she was brought up in a completely different environment. And now, from reading the Gospel, peace came into her soul.
How often do we look for some outwardly majestic, powerful miracles, amazing signs. The power of God is that grace acts on the human soul quietly and peacefully. The soul comes into contact with the shrine - and something inside responds. And why, in this case, bright signs? Tabitha simply listened attentively, in the silence of her soul she perceived the silence of the Word of God. And Natalya just read. And nothing more. But Tabitha's soul became different.
Natalia simply read the Gospel. Tabitha simply listened to the word of God - but her soul became different
The Holy Scriptures contain the following words: The time is coming, and has already come, when the dead will hear the voice of the Son of God, and having heard, they will live (John 5:25). These words, of course, literally mean that someday in the future all those who have died in body will be resurrected as soon as they hear the voice of the coming Son of God. But there is a different meaning in these words: those who are spiritually dead, that is, sleeping in the sleep of sin in our earthly life, having heard the voice of the Son of God in the Gospel now preached, come to life spiritually. And this is actually happiness, completely possible and achievable - to rise spiritually in this life, responding to the voice of Christ.
Be that as it may, Tabitha’s soul was disposed towards the Savior. Through the Gospel she developed a deep respect and love for Christ. Natalya, again from a simple and sincere heart, suggested that when severe pain sets in, she should drink holy water and eat prosphora. This is how luggage filled with shrines came in handy. The confessor, who gave his blessing to take so many shrines with him, may not have imagined how it would all turn out. As the holy fathers say, obedience to a confessor works miracles. Natalya anointed Tabitha with oil from Saint Nektarios of Aegina, and the days of her life were extended.
Natalya anointed Tabitha with oil from Saint Nektarios of Aegina, and the days of the sick woman’s life were extended
In a sense, a quite obvious miracle was happening: just now Tabitha was feeling bad, extremely bad, she was experiencing severe pain, but as soon as she took the holy things, relief came in a matter of minutes. This was obvious even to the medical staff. I would like to say that it was not hidden from the Jewish nurses that Natalya was reading the Gospel. To her great surprise, some of them came up and with a reverent whisper, almost like conspirators, admitted: “Yes, yes, we know about Jesus Christ, but we are forbidden to talk about Him.” It’s a pity that we don’t look into the souls of these simple women, that we don’t see in what mysterious ways respect for Christ arose despite all the prevailing circumstances.
One day Tabitha’s condition worsened. Doctors thought she was dying. Natalya was also scared. What should I do? Abandon the suffering woman halfway, without giving her the most important thing? Natalya decided to have a sincere conversation. What was she talking about? Actually, Natalya simply expressed what was self-evident: Tabitha received consolation from meeting Christ on the pages of the Gospel, she felt relief thanks to the shrines. This is how the Lord showed where true grace is. And now she can join Christ by accepting the sacrament of Baptism, then the Savior Himself will be with her.
Tabitha agreed.
Natalya performed Baptism herself, in a lay manner. She poured water on the sufferer’s head three times with the words: “God’s servant Tabitha is baptized in the name of the Father, amen, and the Son, amen, and the Holy Spirit, amen.” Tabitha smiled joyfully and fell into a peaceful, calm sleep. When she woke up, an amazing joy was reflected on her face, as if something had been revealed to her soul, as if she had come into contact with something unearthly, indescribable. She had difficulty speaking, but her soul was peaceful and joyful. Thus spiritual death was defeated. But bodily death timidly stepped aside - Tabitha did not die. And now, when time had already been won, Natalya called the priest.
Tabitha had difficulty speaking, but her soul was peaceful and joyful: she was with Christ
What it means to invite a priest to perform sacred rites in an Israeli hospital, you need to know this. In order not to describe all the vicissitudes, let's say briefly: the priest came, began to perform the rites (the goal was not only Confirmation, but also Unction), but quite quickly the Jews burst into the room, who literally pushed him out and escorted him out of the hospital. The priest, who had seen everything, calmly told Natalya that the angels would complete what he had left unfinished.
Tabitha lived another month. Natalya was already flying to Russia when she was suddenly informed that the sufferer had died. Relatives buried her in a Jewish cemetery according to Jewish rites. Could Natalya have prevented this? But far, far away, in the quiet walls of the Pochaev Lavra, three archimandrites performed the funeral service for the newly deceased according to the Orthodox rite. Even if it was in absentia, the prayer ascended to Heaven itself. And all those involved in this story prayed for the repose of the soul of the deceased, for whom Christ and His Kingdom became dearer than relatives, closer than the closest ones.
The story should end here. But I can’t keep silent. After forty days, Natalya was given consolation. In some subtle dream, the soul of Tabitha appeared to her in the face of those singing: “Holy, holy, holy is the Lord of hosts. Fill Heaven and earth with Your glory." She felt very, very good.
Let them forgive me for the fact that this story is similar to some ancient life. But there are many similar cases in the Holy Land these days. Tabitha was not honored on earth to become a participant in the Divine Liturgy and to hear the angelic song that was once revealed to the prophet Isaiah and repeated in the Eucharistic canon at every Orthodox service. But her soul, as we dare to believe, as we hope, pray, was accepted into the heavenly chambers, where she became involved in the Heavenly Liturgy, at which she, together with the angels, sings the Holy Trinity.
Let us not hide the fact that the rabbi, naturally, was informed about certain manipulations by the nurse with his wife. The rabbi was unhappy. He reprimanded. I lectured him. Natalya made excuses as best she could and did not tell the whole truth. But after the fortieth day, she, joyful, told about her vision. Angelic singing is also found in the Old Testament, which may have significance for the Jews. “The soul of your wife is now with the angels,” Natalya summed up. “Well, it’s thanks to you,” said the pleased rabbi. “No, not to me, but thanks to the Lord,” Natalya answered.
Now let's summarize.
First, gospel seeds sown in childhood can germinate in old age. Tabitha, being of advanced years, remembered the holy lines read to her, for in childhood she had already heard them from someone. She remembered, which means it made an impression on her, it was deposited in her soul, because we don’t remember everything from childhood that was read to us.
Only one thing is required - to be with Christ yourself, to remain a sincere Christian where the Lord has led you
It’s amazing: the Gospel was read to her at the dawn of her life, and then at the end of her days. And in the end she is with Christ. This means that the gospel – the word about Christ – will never simply disappear. Often we are in a hurry, as if we are trying to hurry God with His Providence for the salvation of our neighbors. We want to see the fruit right away, whereas it may appear at the very borders of the earthly life of the one to whom we preached. In any case, your work will not be in vain. The Gospel certainly leaves a mark on the soul, and after many years, even decades, this seed will germinate and bear fruit.
And secondly, preaching Christ does not require any complex methods, programs, psychological or oratorical techniques, only one thing is required - to be with Christ yourself, to remain a sincere Christian where the Lord has led you. A sincere life dedicated to God will not leave those around you indifferent.
If you are assigned to work for people of other faiths, then this, by the amazing Providence of God, can turn into the most beautiful, wonderful service to God - the salvation of a soul that has seen the truth in the Gospel of Christ. The main thing is to be a genuine Christian yourself and responsibly carry out your assignments. These are the simple truths.

The phrase “holy, holy, holy” appears twice in the Bible—once in the Old Testament (Isaiah 6:3) and once in the New (Revelation 4:8). Both times the phrases are spoken by heavenly beings, and both times it happens in a vision of a man who was brought to the throne of God: first the prophet Isaiah, and then the apostle John. Before addressing the issue of the threefold repetition of God's holiness, it is important to understand what exactly is meant by His holiness.
The holiness of God is His most difficult attribute to explain, in part because it is one of His essential attributes that is not characteristic of man. We are created in the image of God, and we share many of His qualities - to a much lesser extent, of course - love, mercy, faith, etc. But some of God's characteristics will never be imparted to created beings—omnipresence, omniscience, omnipotence, and holiness. The holiness of God distinguishes Him from all other beings. It is more than just His perfection or sinless purity, it contains the essence of His “otherness,” His transcendence. God's holiness embodies the mystery of His awesomeness and causes us to gaze upon Him in wonder as we begin to understand just a little of His greatness.
Isaiah was a direct witness to the holiness of God in his vision described in chapter 6. Although Isaiah was a prophet of God and a righteous man, his reaction to the vision of God's holiness was an awareness of his sinfulness and a sense of despair (6:5). Even the angels in the presence of God, who cried “holy, holy, holy is the Lord of hosts,” covered their faces and feet with four of their six wings. This fact undoubtedly demonstrates the awe and fear caused by the immediate presence of God (Exodus 3:4–5). The seraphim covered themselves, as if trying to cover themselves, as a sign of recognition of their unworthiness in the presence of the Saint. And if the pure and holy seraphim showed such reverence in the presence of Jehovah, then with what deep reverence should we, fallen and sinful creatures, approach Him?! The reverence shown to God by the angels should cause us to question our own self-confidence when we behave thoughtlessly and irreverently in His presence, without understanding His holiness.
John's vision in the book of Revelation, chapter 4, was similar to the vision of the prophet Isaiah. He also saw the living creatures around the throne shouting, “Holy, holy, holy is the Lord God Almighty” (4:8) in reverence and fear of the Holy One. John goes on to describe these beings who continually gave glory and honor to God around His throne. Interestingly, John's reaction to seeing God on His throne is different from Isaiah's. There is no mention of John falling in horror as he realized his sinful condition—perhaps because he had already encountered the risen Christ at the beginning of his vision (Revelation 1:17). Christ laid His hand on John and told him not to be afraid. In the same way, we can come to the throne of grace if the hand of Christ is upon us in the form of His righteousness exchanged for our sins on the cross (2 Corinthians 5:21).
But why the triple repetition of “holy, holy, holy” (the so-called “trisagion”)? Repeating a name or expression three times was quite common among Jews. In Jeremiah 7:4, the Jews say "temple of the Lord" three times, expressing their conviction in their worship, although it was hypocritical and deceitful. The verses in Jeremiah 22:29, Ezekiel 21:27, and 1 Samuel 18:23 contain similar triple expressions of intensity. Therefore, when the angels around the throne cried, “Holy, holy, holy,” they were expressing with power and passion the truth of the supreme holiness of God, that essential characteristic which demonstrates His wonderful and majestic character.
In addition, the “trisagion” expresses the triune nature of God, the three Persons of the Godhead, each of which is equal in holiness and majesty. Jesus Christ is the Holy One who will not see corruption but will be resurrected to be exalted to the right hand of God (Acts 2:26; 13:33–35). Jesus is the “Holy and Righteous One” (Acts 3:14), whose death on the cross allows us to stand before the throne of our holy God without shame. The Third Person of the Trinity is the Holy Spirit—His very name indicates the importance of holiness in the essence of the Godhead.
Finally, the two visions of angels around the throne crying, “Holy, holy, holy,” clearly demonstrate that God is the same in both Testaments. We often think of the God of the Old Testament as a God of wrath, and the God of the New Testament as a God of love. But Isaiah and John presented a unified picture of our holy, majestic, amazing God, who does not change (Malachi 3:6), who is the same yesterday, today, and forever (Hebrews 13:8), and “who has no changes, no eclipses" (James 1:17). God's holiness is eternal, just like Himself.
Eucharist - sacrifice of thanksgiving
In the previous chapter, the words of the Apostle Peter were quoted, which indicate the sacrificial nature of the Liturgy: “And you yourselves, like living stones, are being built up into a spiritual house, a holy priesthood, to offer up spiritual sacrifices acceptable to God through Jesus Christ” (1 Peter 2:5) .
This is accomplished in the Eucharist, the central part of the Liturgy of the Faithful. In it, during the anaphora or prayers of exaltation proclaimed by the priest, the community, precisely as a spiritual priesthood, makes a bloodless spiritual sacrifice, thanking God for all that He has done for humanity. First, thanks are offered to God: You “brought us from non-existence into being”; and then: “You raised up those who had fallen away, and you did not let go of everything, until you brought us up to heaven, and you gave us your future kingdom.” Thanksgiving is offered to the Holy Trinity: “for all those we know and those we do not know, the manifest and unmanifested blessings that have been upon us,” and especially “for this service, which you have deigned to receive from our hands, even if thousands of angels stand before you... singing a song of victory, crying, crying and saying: Holy, holy, holy..."
The whole community unites in prayer as it sings:
Holy, holy, holy is the Lord of hosts, heaven and earth are filled with Your glory, hosanna in the highest, blessed is he who comes in the name of the Lord, hosanna in the highest...
By thus joining in the singing of the heavenly choirs, the community confesses the holiness and glory of God, who:
“Whosoever didst love thy world, as thou didst give unto thy only begotten Son, that whosoever believeth in him should not perish, but have everlasting life. In the darkness, in the south, having given yourself up, and even more so, giving yourself up for your worldly belly, take the bread... having given thanks and blessed, sanctified, broken, and given to the saints by your disciples, he said: Take, eat, this is my Body, which was broken for you in abandonment sins. The likeness and cup at supper, saying: Drink of it, all of you; this is my Blood of the new testament, which is shed for you and for many for the remission of sins.”
Remembering in this way the “saving commandment”, as well as the mystery of all redemption connected with it, i.e. everything that happened: “the cross, the tomb, the three-day resurrection, the ascension to heaven, the settlement at the right hand, the second and glorious coming again,” the priest offers the Holy Gifts placed on the holy altar - bread and a cup of wine - proclaiming: Yours from yours is offered to you for all and for everything.
Thus, “offering this verbal and bloodless service,” the community further prays to God: “send down your Holy Spirit on us and on these gifts set before us,” and with Him transform “the bread into the Body of Christ,” and what is in the cup “into honest Blood of Thy Christ." At the same time, the performer of the service blesses the bread and the cup of wine, separately and then together. Having done this, the clergy and the entire community proclaim with one voice: “Amen, amen, amen.”
So, the people of God, offering, i.e. sacrificing bread and wine, which are chosen from the food that supports earthly life, he accepts heavenly food to support his spiritual life: the holy Body and Blood of Christ. The Orthodox Church does not try to explain the invisible, but true transformation of bread and wine into the Body and Blood of Christ, because this is a mystery intended to be perceived by faith.
Saint Ambrose, Bishop of Milan, who lived in the 4th century, wrote a prayer to be read by those preparing to celebrate the Divine Liturgy. We present this prayer in passages that show how the ancient Church understood the holy Eucharist and its connection with the sacrifice of atonement:
“True High Priest, Jesus Christ! You offered Yourself on the altar of the cross as a pure and immaculate sacrifice for us and Your Blood and established by the power of the Holy Spirit the sacrament being performed, saying: “... Do this, whenever you drink, in remembrance of me” (1 Cor. 11:25). I pray to You in the name of Your honest Blood, which was brought as the price of our salvation. I pray to You for the sake of Your wonderful and indescribable love, with which You loved us sinners so much that You washed and cleansed us from our sins with Your Blood, teach me, Your unworthy servant... by the power of Your Holy Spirit to perform this great sacrament with such reverence and zeal, reverence and the fear that belongs to this sacrament... May Your Holy Spirit come into my heart and in silent words tell me the whole truth about this great sacrament, which is hidden very deeply and covered with the Divine veil... I also pray for Your goodness, Lord, may it come on this bread the fullness of Your Divinity: may He descend, O Lord, both the invisible form and the immense glory of Your Holy Spirit, the glory that in ancient times was sent down on the sacrifices of our fathers: may He create the gifts we bring with Your Body and Blood and guide me, Your unworthy servant in the performance of this great sacrament."
