Lives of holy martyrs named Daria, the meaning of icons and how they help

When remembering Daria of Rome, they always talk about her husband, Chrysanthus. Thanks to him, Daria, having retreated from the pagan faith, believed in one God and accepted the Sacrament of Baptism.

Despite the fact that the couple were young, it is known that they settled separately and agreed to maintain purity until the end of their days and devote themselves to the study of the Law of God. Daria and Chrysanthus told others about God, but this activity of theirs became known to the supreme ruler, after which both of them, locked in prison, suffered severe torture and died tortured by the infidels.

Holy Martyr Daria

In Orthodoxy, on April 4, the Holy Church remembers the martyr Daria, a Christian who lived at the beginning of the second century A.D. The Roman emperor Trajan cruelly persecuted Christians. According to his decree, it was forbidden to bury the bodies of executed Christians. Five Christian girls, one of whom was Daria, secretly performed burial rites to prevent the bodies from being desecrated. The Christian persecutors tracked down and captured the girls. By order of Trajan, they were burned in a copper smelter.

Holy Martyr Daria of Rome

The Great Martyr Darius of Rome is known from the Lives of the Saints, written at the behest of Pope Stephen II in the 8th century. At the end of the 3rd century, the persecution of Christians continued in the Roman Empire. The new religion supplanted paganism, which could, in the opinion of the Roman Emperor Marcus Aurelius, affect the foundations of the state.

Daria was a priestess in the temple of Athena. A young and beautiful girl believed in pagan deities, without doubting her faith, until she was married to Chrysanthos. The young patrician, the son of Senator Polemius, became an outcast in the family due to his rejection of paganism. He independently read the Holy Scriptures and became imbued with the teachings of Christ.

His parents believed that the pagan priestess would be able to return him to the true path: to the faith of his ancestors. But it turned out the other way around. Chrysanthus turned out to be so convincing that Daria also converted to Christianity. Chrysanthus found a presbyter and was baptized, after which he began to preach the new religion to his acquaintances. He convinced Daria to take a vow of celibacy in the name of serving Jesus Christ.

The young couple began to live like brother and sister. Over time, they settled in separate houses and formed communities (male and female), in which they preached the New Testament and called for abandoning marriage. Based on a denunciation from neighbors, the couple was arrested.

Chrysanthus was tortured. But the young ascetic was overshadowed by Divine power. Spikes, chains, and ox ropes did not harm him. The miracles made a deep impression on the judge. He, along with his wife, two sons, and servants, converted to Christianity. When Marcus Aurelius was informed of this, he ordered the tribune to be drowned in the sea, his sons and servants to have their heads cut off, and their bodies to be thrown into a cave. The mother began to visit their burial place and secretly pray.

The woman was tracked down and wanted to be captured. But Ilaria (a convert, the wife of a judge) asked her pursuers for a delay in time to finish the prayer. At the end of it, she gave up the ghost. The maid buried Ilaria in a cave next to her sons.

Chrysanthus was thrown into a pit of sewage, and Daria was placed in a brothel. The stench of sewage was replaced by a fragrance. A lion entered the brothel and blocked the way for the rapists. The mighty beast did not let anyone near Daria. He growled menacingly, knocked them down, but did not kill or maim anyone. The young woman preached the word of God to those who came with unclean thoughts and sent them away.

Soon the Romans learned about a miracle: a Christian woman guarded by a wild beast. To stop rumors, the brothel was set on fire. The lion was afraid of fire and smoke. Daria let him out of the house and was captured by the guards. The couple were tortured and then buried alive in the ground.

Near the burial site, secret Christians began to gather in a cave and pray. The emperor, when this was reported to him, ordered not to let anyone out of the cave and to fill the entrance with earth and stones, setting up a mass grave for dozens of people. Memorial Day for the spouses is April 1.
